Back in the 70's my Mom joined a houseplant club. They send her a file box that looks like a green house and every month she was sent 10 or so cards. Each one was for a different plant. They contained so much info. My Mom passed this down to me (there were 2 boxes). I was having problems with my African Violet, pulled out the card and what do you know!! The card said that these plants do not like cold water! So now I water them with warm water and have beautiful plants! I now have 3 plants because the original plant grew so big!! I don't know if this is new info to a lot of people but it sure was for me!
I had a partial set of these when I was a kid in the 70s but it is long gone. Last year I found a complete set in an estate sale and I won the bid! I love it!
I enjoyed seeing the old kitchen in that part of the house. How interesting that was the kitchen in 1919. Also loved the magnetic grow lights. What a great idea. :-)
I didn't realize how much I have missed these tutorial style videos until today! Don't get me wrong... I learn something or am inspired, or just downright enjoy every single video you put out but this was great. Thank you for feeding us!!🌷
Wow! Not only do I want to say how much we all glean from your gardening expertise Laura, but I want to add that the camera angles and editing are just superb! The UA-cam instructor channels all teach to improve your channel by at least one element in each video. You guys are going above and beyond that! Being a gardening UA-cam creator myself-I am no where near this quality of video but I’m certainly inspired by you and Aaron! Both in gardening and video abilities! Thanks for all you do for your subscribers 💚
As much as love this video with all of its useful information for future projects, let me just say I'm drooling over the old kitchen! Are the built in cabinets original as well, because they are a gem! And that cubby!! Be still my heart. To see an original kitchen like that in near original condition is a dream come true. Maybe not to everyone, but it sure is to me ❤
I was mesmerized by that old kitchen area too, and the cubby that Laura flew by in the video. I watched that segment a few times! I think the cubby would be a favorite quiet place for me. I wonder where a stove or icebox would have been. And then it opened up to the piano room...wow, what a secret ; )
FINALLY african violets shown. Mine are in full bloom all winter which bring bright color during the winter. Especially beautiful with the colorful blooms and snow background. Good class.
Your house is so interesting. I would love love love to see you play the piano at the end of each show. It would be a beautiful way to end your videos. Thanks, Laura, for all of your hard work to entertain us.
Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b USA 🇺🇸 We have dropped to 35°F this morning ❄🥶❄ Cozy inside and I love watching what you're doing in the 🥶 cold
Good morning, Laura☕️ Everything is looking so great! Your planting videos feed my soul during this cold 🥶 Winter. I love the vase you chose for the the Begonia 😍 and how the terra-cotta pot looks aged🙌🏻. Have a Blessed Day 😊🐈
What’s beautiful home you have. You brought back many memories for me today. My mother used to raise violets to make a living. She you sell them to the florists in our area while we were growing up. They were beautiful. She had a green thumb me not so much.
I have had terrible luck with my succulents but after watching you share and seeing all your new plants, I’m back at it. I am grooming, rooting and buying more. Thanks, Laura. You always inspire.
Enjoyable video, Laura. Hope you & Aaron keep your old farmhouse. It is full of character. The new ones & even custom built are inferior to houses of the past.
I love this old kitchen, it has a lot of charm! So nice to have a room like this as a secondary workspace and a temporary dumping space for all kinds of stuff!
That little cubby in the old kitchen is so cute, i see 2 little kids being creative on that table in the near future. We really need a whole house tour soon, but what a treat to see that.
Years ago I lived in an apt that had the perfect conditions for growing violets. I propagated leaves without a dome and they grew beautifully. I had so MANY! I would plant the little newbies in tea cups and give them away to friends and family. My "Mom" plants were HUGE. If I remember right, they were about 10' across.

👏that was very informative - my mom loved and was very successful with African violets - maybe now I can again try one in her honor! Thanks Laura you are like a little plant doctor especially when you were watering with the syringe! 👏❤️I'll go forth with a little knowledge and a 🙏prayer.....TY
Hello Laura, because spring is coming, in some areas we do already have it, can you dedicate one video for fertilizers, NPK numbers, explanation of the ratio, how can we test the NPK in the soil and how to add it properly into the soil? I believe you will explain it like a pro. I have asked 5 garden centres and 2 had no idea and 3 said it's not important to add anything just liquid fertilizer. I like slow release fertilizer instead. Thank you for your consideration. 🤘
I know they did some soil tests last year but I don’t think they got a definite answer with the results (they did a couple of different send away tests). I know that they did switch from slow release (espoma flower tone) to a weekly fertilizer for their annual flowers.
I inherited a African Violet and a philodendron from a ex boss a client told me to delute coffee with water and it would make my philodendron leaves a dark green. She was right it was beautiful. So at the same time I shared the coffee water on my African Violet it also loved the coffee water. My clients all ask what I did to the African Violet, it was so big and so beautiful. They couldn't believe that coffee water could do that to a plant.
WOW just WOW!!! I absolutely love your home. That old kitchen is gorgeous. I see why y’all bought that house. It has so much room. That little nook is so cute. I wish I had a room to be able to work on things in the house. My husband planted a little garden last year and he canned a lot of stuff. He’s already getting it ready to plant it this year. He plants food and I plant flowers. We love to be out there together. I have learned so much by watching you and Aaron. My tulips are coming up and I watched your video on how to take care of them when it freezes. So many videos to go back a rewatch to learn. Thank you for what you do and yes I drink my morning coffee watching y’all. Oh the begonia with the urn is beautiful.
Great tutorial video with a lot of informative content on propagating violets. I agree with other commenters, please bring back some more in depth tutorials to Garden Answer.
Perfect timing on this one Laura ! My daughter in law just brought over a crazy wild happy bean peperomia plant and said HELP !! We have cut it up into 18 little plants and are waiting for them to callous over before putting into new pots . This just reassured me that we are doing it the right way ! Thank you so much for all your videos ! ❤️🤞🌸
God Morning! Thank you for the African Violet tutorial, it was super informative. My grandmother grew violets and I have carried on the tradition on a small scale. I use clear, clean Soda bottles to root my plants in water. It works very well and no need for Saran. I place them in windows and enjoy watching the roots develop and then the babies.
I must admit when I saw the subject of today’s video I thought, oh I think she’s already hit on those subjects before so I doubt if I’ll learn anything new. Boy was I wrong! I learned a lot and was really thankful to see you talking about the African violet with the extra growth on some of them. I have an African violet that belonged to my aunts, who is deceased, and I noticed the growth of a new plant the other day. I had no idea what to do. I really want to make sure that I can keep this plant of hers healthy and happy as it reminds me of her every time I water it or it blooms. I swear I learn something new with each new video. Thank you Laura.
I know you worry a bit about projects going into a different day like this one did, but I didn’t find it disruptive at all. It’s terrific that you had the flexibility to just pause and catch back up later!
Thank you for always inspiring me (and I think anyone who watched your videos) to garden and work on fun projects, you have inspired me to do so many fun things, thanks!
Your house is SO beautiful! I love old homes with originally wood trim and floors. With your taste in decorating it's just perfect! And the Steinway is absolutely perfect! 💚 Well done!
My Mom was the queen of African violets. I used to give her one for Mother’s Day each year. When she passed I took them over. So glad to see this video as I am not the queen of violets and I think mine are struggling. I may need to take mine apart of inspect them to see what needs to be done like you did. Thank you for the all the tips. I may need to do a succulent review as well and get mine repotted and new soil etc.
About a year ago I watched one of your African violet videos and did this very thing. I had also read that if you blow into the plastic bag, the carbon dioxide from your breath is good for the plants. So I took leaves from the same plant, put them in identical pots, next to each other by a window and under identical plastic bags but one I blew into almost every day and one I did not. The difference was astounding in how fast the one I blew into grew new leaves and how much bigger it got. This was a fun easy rewarding project. Now the one that was doing so well has about 30 flowers on it. It still looks better than the one I didn't give the carbon dioxide boost to.
Thank you for sharing Laura, love your plant room!! I have to repot and prune 20 African Violets tomorrow so happy I found this!! And love propagating AV leaves, you get at least 2-4 babies each leaf, remove the babies and get more babies from that same leaf!!💕🥰🙏🏼
Love the succulents in the tray. That looks good even if you don’t do anything else with them. My daughter has had some success with African violets. She started out with two plants. Over the last few years, she has propagated the leaves she’s groomed off and has created dozens and dozens of new plants. We now have around 30 plants that seem to be in constant bloom. Plus she’s given away at least that many more plants to friends. (She has only used the outside leaves in her propagation efforts and always directly into soil. And she never covers them with plastic)
My bank had an African violet that was huge, it had to be a foot across with tons of flowers. The teller said they just watered it nothing else. I never had luck with flowers just leaves
Hi Laura! I especially enjoyed the tutorial on African Violets. I really enjoy them, but haven't had very good luck with them. I usually threw them away when the stem got so long and the lower leaves died off. Now that I know what to do, I will try them again. I love seeing the older part of your house! If not asking too much, would you mind showing us the original part of the house? I think it would be fun to see it. The little nook looks like it may have been a breakfast nook. It looks like it would be a good spot for activities for Benjamin and Samantha Grace. Thank you so much for sharing!
Laura, you barely showed the Christmas gift from Aaron. Girl, you love your coffee☕️. It was my treat to myself during the first lockdown. It’s my morning indulgence and I love 💕it!
Really nice! Love african violets, when I was little my dad had them and didn't let anyone touch them. He had a collection and mom propagated them in water. He doesn't take care of plants anymore.....😔 I will have to groom my succulents when it warms up a bit closer to spring because they are all outside! Hugs🤗💜🤗
Hey Laura...just wanted to say, after seeing your unboxing from mountaincrest...I used your discount code you gave us...I fell in love with the Ric Rac cactus, pepperomia ruby glow and the pepperomia rosso you shared....I I immediately ordered all 3. They arrived today and are gorgeous. I normally NEVER order succulents/cactus during winter because of times in transit during winter. But after seeing your unboxing, I gave it a shot...I'm so glad I did❤ they sent me a bonus plant...it looks like a wee babe echeveria black prince. Lil cold, so I'm allowing them to acclimate to inside temps atm...but pots/soil were ready for their arrival. Thanks so much for doing that video...gave me the confidence I lost on ordering this time of year and introduced me to a new plant vendor❤
So in love with that little cubby! Wish I could’ve seen it a little better! Really appreciated this video. I have a bunch of African violets and did not know the proper way to handle this part of their care. Thanks!
Hey Laura! Great segment on African violets….a much loved houseplant that I’ll always associate with my mom. She used to grow gorgeous African violets and had care tips that I always assumed were “old wives tales”. For instance, she swore by adding an aspirin to the watering can before she watered….she was extremely careful not to get the leaves wet, (so she watered them by putting the water in a saucer under the pot), and she always grew the violets in a North facing window. I must admit she had terrific success so she must have done something right. Thank you for all the great tips and for me, the nostalgic look back at caring for this lovely little plant. 🪴
African Violets have always been one of my favorite houseplants. About 5 years ago I found some miniature ones at a local store. I had been on the hunt for years. They are so fun to grow and propagate. The mature plants measure about 3 inches across and are prolific bloomers.
Laura, you can make life easier by getting one of those little bottles from the dollar store that has a little pump on it. You just flip open the bottles and press the little saucer looking top with your cotton ball to wet it. Works great for anything you sometimes have to to one handed. Acetone, alcohol, peroxide, basically any liquid. Can't wait for spring!!!
I feel like we need a few tours! We need to see your camera setup up in the studio with the tv screen and a house tour! Maybe see more of Samantha’s room?
I’ve had African violets as house plants, but they always died. I had no idea how to take care of them until now. This video was so full of information that I am willing to buy some African violets again. Also, on a different subject, your house is so beautiful, and interesting because of the age when it was built. This is my dream house 🥰😍
I came back to this video because I had 9 AV plants that I grew from propagated leaves!! Checked on them today and they alI grew long necks so I decapitated all of them😢, and potted them up in fresh soil!! I also propagated 32 more leaves in soil, left an inch of stem on each because the longer the stem, the longer it takes to grow babies!! Hopefully they'll sprout babies and I can give some away to family and friends!!❤
G' morning! 🌞 Planning on giving my daughter succulents when she closes on her first home. These segments are so helpful as I have no experience, but I feel they will be great for her. Thank you!
I was literally just thinking I needed to review your last violet video, and here you are, with an even better one. The rooting hormone, leaf propigating, root trimming and discussion about water rooting answered all my questions and more! Thank you!
I have never been one interested in house plants, but now, after the last few videos, you have me wondering which ones I can start with. Thank you for your inspiration 😋!
Good info about the African Violets. I didn’t know I could take them apart like that. I have several that are 20 years old and looking “tired”. Hope this will rejuvenate them!
African violet refresh and propagation is highly successful. I’ve tried all with very little fail. You are going to have a lot of beautiful babies. That is the most fun watching those babies emerge. Only thing I do different is wick water all my violets with amazing success. No worries about should I top water or bottom water. Love watching all your videos. 👍🇨🇦
Laura, have you tried ground cinnamon as a growth hormone? Seems odd if you’ve never heard of it but, it does work well for lavender. The fun thing about propagation is the “trash” the big box “garden centers” sweep up becomes a treasure hunt. Instead of the broken bit going to the trash bin, it get a new lease on life. 😂 ♥️
Didn't know there was suck a thing as magnetic grow light. Please, Please, Please link the magnetized lights in your highlights channel. I need those. Also, I love you and your family. It makes my day to see all the wonderful plants you grow, projects you do, and Benjamin(how funny he is). Let's not forget the cats!! Thank you, Laura.
I do remember that urn, I guess you have three of those, not sure though😅 You've use that in so many beautiful projects: on the hobbit house, fountain, flower arrangements etc. again not 100% sure😅 The instrumental was nostalgic, remember the sound as well on your first couple of videos before. Wow it's been years since I've got hook on to your channel. Thanks for sharing what you've love ( joy of gardening) that we love too.
Thanks for the reminder this gave me. In our first house I had the perfect light from the window to grow African Violets. I had so many but with the next house and a second baby, it wasn't as easy to grow them. I currently have a grow light inside that I could try growing them again.
I still can’t believe people can have plants and cats in the same home. My cat treats my houseplants like an all-you-can-eat buffet! All my plants are outdoors. 🐈
That was really useful to see how to refresh african violets. I've always pinched off older outer leaves, but didn't know you could unpot it and refresh the plant by repotting it.
I really love older homes. They are usually have such interesting architecture with interesting rooms and interesting closets and such. We bought on and really love it. We did have to insulate it and make a few other changes but we love it. My grandmother had African Violets. I remember her telling me how we had to water them differently than the other plants and very carefully. They always had flowers. So recently I decided that I wanted to try growing some myself. I could not find any Violets near where we live except this sad looking thing that was left at Lowes. It was really bad off. Probably not the best way to start out with African Violets. I bought it though and now a few weeks later it looks fine but so far no flowers. It is under lights but I think I may have put it in a planter that is a tiny bit too large for it. It was the smallest pot that I had. I hate to have to repot it.
So many questions answered about African Violets my sister and I were gifted my aunts collection when she passed and I had so many questions some I found answers for but this video answered many more….but one what can you do if you are not getting any blooms ? Very Healthy plants but no signs of blooms? Thank you for all you information you provide in such a accessible way.
blooms always come to plants that are nice and healthy and in the right conditions. African violets love bright indirect sunlight all day (morning sun if you can provide it is good too!) They can be fertilised once a month with specialist fertiliser which can promote blooms. Having them in a smaller pot is good too! 1/3 the size of the crown of the plant is a good size for the pot as they bloom easier when potbound. Hope this helps!
I put African Violet fertilizer in a casserole dish with water and bottom water it every month or so. They do not like overhead water at all. Doing this, they stay in bloom for me.
Hi Maureen, there are several things that violets need to bloom but the basics are, the right temperatures, enough light, enough moisture and fertilizer when required. I have a few videos on this if you want to have a look :)
This is such a timely video for me! I have an African Violet in desperate need of attention and I will definitely try the leaf propagation too! Thanks Laura!🥰
Awesome! I love learning about plant propagation! You've given me courage to try with African violets. I've always been afraid of them because my mom had one and she was convinced that if you touched the leaves they would die. It died in a move once when I was pretty young and she never got another.
what a production line and variety of plants.. from succulents to begonias to african violets.. ❤ that begonia is so sweet and pretty, sort of old-fashioned looking... i want one, lol... currently going thru my head trying to figure out where i can put grow lights inside without a cat attacking plants.. and i may have just come up with an idea.. Gardener's Supply Company has that bamboo shelf that can hang on a wall, mmmm... now to find a spot.. lol.. see what you did? lol... i so love your house, too... now i'm on the hunt for a shelf, some begonias, african violets, and more succulents!! thanks for the inspiration!! and 🙂 ❤ thanks for the video!! 🙂 ❤
Here in india as anywhere else succulents are really expensive...so propagating them the way you've shown is so helpful I luv your channel for the way you make it seem that we're living in a completely different world simple calm peaceful and exciting God bless you
I have always been intimidated by African violets, maybe I will give them a try! Thanks for sharing and making the process look easy? Lol we will see! ♥️
I’ve propagated many violets for many years. You are right - you can use the outer leaves and they propagate just fine. You don’t need to use inner leaves. I only leave about an inch stem on the leaf.
Awesome info, thanks Laura! I'm sharing to my 17 year old granddaughter, Mallory, who loves succulents. Hoping to stoke her fire for plants! I, too, love African Violets and am hoping she takes an interest in them, as well.
Back in the 70's my Mom joined a houseplant club. They send her a file box that looks like a green house and every month she was sent 10 or so cards. Each one was for a different plant. Hey, I didn’t know about the warm water either. Good to know this info.
Good info! Thanks!
I remember those. My dad used to get those cards.
My mom had one of those. I need to see if she still has it
I enjoyed seeing the old kitchen in that part of the house. How interesting that was the kitchen in 1919. Also loved the magnetic grow lights. What a great idea. :-)
Yes and it sort of reminded me of a butler's pantry.
The magnetic lights are genius- so easy to set up. None of us would have known this, thank you.

My sentiments exactly‼️🥰

I was waiting for Laura's violet update too :) Alas, I only have one in bloom now but it's just enough to keep me going until spring

Perfect timing. My African violet needs this done desperately. Now I know how!! Thanks again Laura! 🌸
Great video very informative. Love the pace of our videos. You can deliver valued information at a pace that holds our interest. Thanks.

Never had much luck with African violets, but watching this video has given me hope to try again! Thank you Laura 🌷

This is exactly the information I needed! Thank you!! Now I can go work on my African violets and succulents. Thank you for sharing.
These plants are so satisfying to propagate successfully. Great video.
I don’t care for succulents, but I really enjoyed the African violet segment. That was all new to me. Thank you.
Laura, you barely showed the Christmas gift from Aaron. Girl, you love your coffee☕️. It was my treat to myself during the first lockdown. It’s my morning indulgence and I love 💕it!
Good morning y’all! Another fun week of watching Garden Answer! Lots of tips today. 🥰🌱
Really nice! Love african violets, when I was little my dad had them and didn't let anyone touch them. He had a collection and mom propagated them in water. He doesn't take care of plants anymore.....😔
I will have to groom my succulents when it warms up a bit closer to spring because they are all outside!
It's amazing how easy it is to root these succulents!
The BEST part of getting ready for my Monday work day is starting my day with a video with Laura ❤❤❤❤
After watching your video this morning I decided to groom my African violets. Thank you for the nudge!
Love that room! Especially the bar it is well stocked! 😉
That was my thoughts, how wonderful to make a cocktail and then go listen to the piano!
You saved my African Violet today and I got to see your piano again! Great video! Thank you!
That old part of your house is fantastic!
Interesting to see part of the "old house." Old houses are so fascinating. Beautiful.
Really enjoyed this video. I didn’t know you could start new violets by taking a leaf cutting. Learned a lot. Thanks Laura 😊
That tray of violets was very satisfying!!
G' morning! 🌞 Planning on giving my daughter succulents when she closes on her first home. These segments are so helpful as I have no experience, but I feel they will be great for her. Thank you!
Cute name for your channel!
As long as she has a bright window to set them in. Succulents need lots of light.
@@cynthiafisher9907 thank you!
@@n.w.414 great info Thank you!
Fun and helpful video. I used to do Africa violets and propagated them the same way. Makes me want to grow them again.
So your old kitchen in a Butler's Panty...so cool!
Oh, I've saved succulents from the trash in Home Depot too lol
Thanks for the African violet tutorial! I have one in need of triage!!
Love the way you inspire with every video! I want to try a bunch of new indoor plants now. Thanks for all the great videos!
I'm loving the ASMR vibes in this video!
That was really useful to see how to refresh african violets. I've always pinched off older outer leaves, but didn't know you could unpot it and refresh the plant by repotting it.
Good morning! 🌻🐝
Empty glass spice jars work great for rooting cuttings in water. They fit nicely on a window sill.
Thank you for all the suggestions
This is such a timely video for me! I have an African Violet in desperate need of attention and I will definitely try the leaf propagation too! Thanks Laura!🥰
good moring
I like how you explain everything. Thank you so much!💚💚💚
What a great way to start a Monday 🌱
They all look great potted up and domed.
