    I love that you are growing African violets. I have been growing them for almost 40 years now. They are my first love. I moved last year so my AV collection is small but I had just ordered more today before I saw your video. Ty again for the AV content. I can watch AV and orchid videos all day.

    Great video! I worked in a violet house many years ago and just love them. I didn’t know you can buy leaves to propagate. I love your shelves. I get a little tired of my orchids too sometimes since they don’t bloom very often, the violets just bloom and bloom😊.

    I have a whole 2 meters long window shelf full of African violets. I have no idea what "brand" they are because I got the leaves from my grandmother and she had grown them for decades but I know the first one of those came from Sweden. I've had them for 30 years and I have grown them from leaves and by repotting pieces of root/stems and I have made a hybrid by accident. All the flowers were first very dark purple and then one plant started to bloom with white flowers that had dark purple middle. I have never rooted new plants in water, I have just pinched few leaves off and stick them into the soil/dirt. After about 4-5 months the new leaves comes out of the soil. I grow them in plastic pots with a good layer of clay gravel on the bottom and on the watering plate and I always water on the plate never over the plant. And no spraying. They grow by the southern window with a light curtain protecting them from the most intense sunlight in the middle of the summer. We have all four seasons here and the violets love the south window and the light. But in the winter months when it is dark I water them very little, once in a couple of weeks and only little pit of water on the plate. Usually in these days (end of February) I repot them but not every year, and start to give some fertilizer, more diluted than what the manufactures suggest. And start watering them more and about once a week. And every year they start to bloom in April and they bloom all summer until the end of September/early October. I love them very much and they are easy to care and beautiful flowers.

    If you have a wide opening vase, you can cover the top with aluminum foil then poke a hole for the stem but protect the leaf on top. Works well for me

    Oh my goodness. I love the colours you have chosen Danni. The varigation on the leaves also appeal, doing double duty when the flowers aren't in bloom. I especially liked the dark red one. Thanks for showing your newest plants. 😄

    Thanks for the video, i might give african violets a try. My mom loves them and they’ll remind me of her. I also agree about the noisy neighbors!! My house shares walls with two other houses and being irritated by neighbor noises is a constant. But i’ve learned that I’m actually noise sensitive. From what you’ve said you might be as well. Being aware of it has helped me, as well as internet advice on how to deal with it.

    I love the miniature av! And I don't want to spoil the fun but I have got a lot of african violets which I propagated from leaf in a Milsbo cabinet and unfortunately trips got inside there as well (and aphids). I keep them with all the little pots in a tray so it's quite easy to take the whole thing out and spray them but trips are really a awful pest and once you have them you never seem to get rid of them completely.

    Hi Danny. I have been raising miniature AV's from leaf cuttings for the last two years. I cut the stem end at a slant, dip them in rooting powder and plant directly into African violet potting soil. In two months (the time that it takes for yours to root), baby plantlets begin to push up through the soil surface. Also, I have an indoor plastic-covered greenhouse, with plant lights and a small fan to circulate moist air. There is a small "pond" of water in a container that sits on a seedling heat mat on the floor of the greenhouse. Thanks for sharing your method with us.

      @sharonholmes4444 2 роки тому +2

      @Roz Laizure I start my leaves the same way in soil, but no rooting powder and I don't have a greenhouse. They take awhile but do survive.

    Loved seeing you start growing African violets again. My rescued violet didn't make it. I even repotted her in A. V. soil from Repot Me and got a new pot for her from them. I will try again after the first of the year.

    We are so alike! I also love glass, I can’t explain it, but I just like glass jars and vases, any interesting colors or shapes. I also love propagating my African violets, it’s addicting to watch them grow. And yes, I’m irritated by noisy neighbors too! One of many neighbors loves his power tools and gas powered pressure washer… so much that he uses them every day! Lol
    Oh, and thanks for the info on potting these leaves! It really helps. Love the AV content! Can’t wait to see them grow!

    The first time I rooted an African violet when it had a good root system but no sprouts I transitioned it to soil. It didn't do well and slowly died, so now I keep it in water until the new leaf growths are starting to develop and then I plant it

    Hurray for AVs! I’m glad you leapt. You didn’t do anything wrong the last time. It was all the thrips’ fault! I have a few AVs too. I have to say that the leaves I’ve been propagating have taken quite long to show babies. Some over 6 months still have no baby. Maybe they never will. :( the other babies are still so tiny that I’m afraid of handling them. Also I’m with you on the loud neighbors. MY GOODNESS! It’s the bane of my existence! Right now it’s is 10 AM and they’re already started with they partying for thanksgiving. And I know it’s thanksgiving. But do you really need to be so loud at this hour? SMH. Anyway! Happy you brought back violets! Have a great day!

    You can cover your shot glass or other small glass jar with plastic wrap, cut a small slit in the plastic, and insert your leaf through the slit into the water. It holds the leaf up out of the water and prevents losing too much water via evaporation. Periodically, you will need to replace the old water with fresh if it is looking cloudy.
