Hey guys, so considering the number of comments that mention this, I clearly failed to make the context very clear in the video. These are recently purchased baby plants, many had very little roots, if at all, just separated from the mother plants, many suffered on transport, lost leaves and suffered discoloration as a result of stress, dehydration and deficiencies. They don't need less light or extra fertilizer, they just need time. They are also not over potted, I don't grow to sell, so I don't need the extra space. I don't rely on repotting them in a few months. The pots are self watering and have a reservoir, they are half the size you see in the vid, inside the decorative pot. In my environment they need this setup, small pots that retain very little water are a sure way to stress them for me. When I am writing this comment they are 3 time the size and 3 times greener, so do check out the new vids on my channel for regular updates, tips on growing av's depending on climate and expectations and all the good stuff ;) I don't grow after other people's rules, I hope to develop logical grow guidelines specific to each environment, so I hope to see you you in the comments of my future AV vids 😄

I picked up my first African violet at the hardware store on clearance for $1. it looked fine but it didn't have flowers. I reported it and fertilized it. It has been two months and I just noticed flowers coming in! I dont know what they will look like but I'm excited to see.

My mother always had african violets. I ,of course, then began growing them when I got my first place. At one point she and I together had 250 plants, plantlets, and leaves. We always loved the varigated leaves as well. My favorite was "Sunset Rose". I think you would really have loved it. It was med green curly leaves with cream AND pink varigation with soft pink semi double blooms with wavy petals. Unfortunately, I lost it in a move and never found it again! I have been growing orchids, but am looking to grow violets again in addition to my orchids. Plants are one of my biggest addictions! Lol

Thank you for sharing your collection. I recently stumbled upon an African violet from Russia called “Curly Ocean” and I was smitten with it. Never been a big fan of African Violets, but these hybrids are really peaking my interest. My “Curly Ocean” has thrived and grown since I brought it home, and it is blooming it’s head off. Such a joy to look at every day. I intend to re-watch your video with a note pad and pen so I can start a wish list for myself. So happy that you made this video!

Would you pls do a video on growing your carnivorous plants. Pls include growing medium, fertilizing, light required ect. I presently have 2 ( I did have 3 but one died) IHELP! Especially since I have determined that my paphs do better in spagnum moss plus others which means more of those pesky gnats in & around my house.

    • @SwanGeese
      @SwanGeese 5 років тому

Flypaper will work better than carnivorous plants. I grow carnivorous plants along with my african violets & orchids. The carnivorous plants can only catch so many insects and I have a sizable collection of violets. Flypaper takes care of the problem quickly, easily, and efficiently. I also use marathon 1% granules in my violet soil and that keeps the gnat population to a minimum since I don't use pesticides on my orchids and other plants. I only have five orchids so..
The proper medium for a carnivorous plant really depends on the plant. Typically they like a soiless medium (some type of peat & perlite mix usually) and nutrient and mineral free water. Distilled, reverse osmosis, and rain water are the usual water sources.
Lighting requirements depend on the plant.
As a general rule, you should never fertilize a carnivorous plant. Bugs are the plant's fertilizer.
My suggestion would be to look up the individual plants you have for specific requirements.
Carnivorous plants are fun to grow and I love them, but I wouldn't use them as a pest control strategy.

The sister of my grandfather’s bookkeeper back in the 1950’s raised the most astoundingly African violets. They were huge, 10-12 inches across, and the colors were beautiful. Her secret was a sheep manure tea that she made. No commercial fertilizers. You could also use a goat manure tea. They were raised near windows, no artificial lights in those days.

I had African violets for years before orchids and today I have watched several videos on violets which consistently said violets like to be in small pots because their roots like to be crowded. News to me! Now I know why they didn’t bloom for a long time after I repotted them to larger containers.

I am a big fan of yours for orchids and watch all of your videos. I am also into African violets. I live in New Jersey. This video was so great and enjoyable. Where can I get some of these? The violets at the grocery store are boring and the same over and over.
    Possible subjects-
I would love to hear about suckers - what exactly are they and why do you remove them
    2. When to repot an African violet- how do you know when it should be repotted
    3. How often to you water the ones not in self watering pots

But because I saw that you had started an african violet collection it renewed my interest in them and so now I have 4 of them, two rescued from a big box store and two from the supper market plant section. They will be housed in between and among the orchids. Thank-you so much for inspiring a new collection.

I have 2 very old African violets that has pink flowers, and they’ve constantly stayed in bloom, like every time the previous set of flowers die, another set of flowers is already blooming. I’m not sure how big they can get, since I’ve just kept them in a medium sized grey pot for at least 5 years. However, I can say they’ve competed crowded the place and are now swollen popping into the air (if that makes sense) (probably because of all the stems and roots in the pot).
I don’t know much about these plants, but I can say for sure they are an extremely tough type of plant, as neither of my plants suffered any infections or infestations.

Loved this! Ive grown african violets since you posted your older video on them, love the flowers from them when I cant get my orchids to bloom :)
Make sure you put the younger leaves above the older leaves or they will distort as they grow. You always want the small centre leaves on top. Be careful with the water metre and tags as well because as they grow the plant will push against them and again distort the nice flat growth that you want :)
Id really love to get some update on these after youve had them for a while, Ive been hoping youd get into them again

They're so cute... I definitely need to focus on getting both really big lush plants for empty corners, but also smaller plants for smaller spaces, and African Violets are really growing on me after this video. I do have one already that I got from a friend; it's tiny and has pale pink flowers- very classic, but not the most exciting, nor attractive foliage. I'd love to find some of the varieties shown in this video! Thanks!

I grown about 400 African Violets. AVSA has a program called First Class that has all the registered violets. Unfortunately, a lot of hybridizers do not register their hybrids. I am hoping that you put a layer of perlite in the bottom of those pots. Like Orchids, AVs do not like to sit in water . Variegation is frequently temperature sensitive. More white when cool. I grow a lot of the Ukrainian and Russian violets, including some you just showed. I have a lot of descriptions. Holler if you want some.

Danny, I'm just putting this out there, but I think it would be so cute if you design your next round of "limited edition" merch around your (very cute, and quite apropos, but she needs red hair) new avi! I’d totally buy that, too. I ordered the 16" x 20" piece of the Burrageara 'Nelly Isler' art, with the lavender background, and I was very happy when I got it, because it surpassed my expectations in every way possible! I’d love to get another one with your avi, and since we both have red hair (my pic is old, I have darker red/purple hair now) and are constantly carrying our orchids around - and yes, I have a 'Nelly Isler' too, she's desperately clinging to her last few blooms now - I’d probably even get a T-shirt, or a reusable grocery bag, if they have one.
Also, I wanted to ask you about your Seramis, I have over half of my (way over 100, but never enough or too many!!) orchids potted in it, and they (and I do too, I mix the pebbles with either LECA, Orchiata bark, or sphagnum moss, depending on the needs of the individual plant) really like it. I’d happily buy it, or else, we could do a swap, trade with you for Orchiata bark (I have all sizes of it), some Besgrow sphagnum moss, either the AAAAA super long-fibered sphagnum moss - the kind for Neofinitas - or a bale of the regular stuff, a (or a few) Phalaenopsis species seedlings, and/or something that we have in the USA that's hard to find where you are. I bought my Seramis from Orchitop, because it's the only place that I'm aware of that sells just the pebbles from the orchid mix, but without the bark that's included. I'm in the United States, so shipping it here wasn't cheap; I spent 103€ to ship 94.54€ worth of the pebbles, but I got two 10 liter bags and two 2 liter bags of it, but I'm already starting to run low. Knowing how expensive it is, I would either pay for the shipping or send more of whatever item(s) you want to get from here that aren't available there to cover the shipping costs. Plus, I hate to see Seramis just sitting on the sidelines, not being used; I'm sure that I have lots of things in my orchid rooms that YOU can use, but I'm not.
Thank you for reading my long, off-topic post. Your videos are the best! :P

I have an hanging African Violet that I recognized from one my mom had when I was a child. My mom had it covering the coffee table and it grew like crazey with kids around. It has red lipstick flowers and a verigated leaf. I have done everything wrong with it, I put it in a big pot with a commercial soil for African violets but it had very little peralit. I have trans planted them into small pots and have 4 plants. Question when can I put them together into one pot to hand. And anything else anyone can suggest. I watch your orcad presentation. No idea why I didn't look for help with this plant.

Hi there! Love your videos! How xsn I identify my violets? I have two that are over 10 yrs old and several newer but I got them from big box store with generic tag of "African Violet"

I swear almost anything mini I need to have o.o💖💕. I have one african violet but it's not my pride and joy as the flowers appeared to mold o.o? I'll have to look into it and see how the blooms fair next time around. Sucks that it's not mini, it was an impulse buy at a grocery store x.x. I like the minis bc they take up less space and doesn't look like a huge pot of leaves when not in bloom xD💖.

The smaller leaves underneath larger ones, why do you say they need to be removed? Thanks for a great video, you’ve just added many more to my AV Wishlist. Here’s hoping I can find them in Australia.

Hi, I didn't find anyone giving a reason as to why really, other then they are unnecesary.. not explaining what makes them useless lol and that you just have to do it :)) but I think I figured out why: AV leaves are larger towards the outer row and smaller towards the inner row. In this way all leaves receive adequate light and photosynthesize, hence delivering sugars which will cover the 'expense' of maintaining them on the plant. These small rogue leaves will get covered by a bigger row, thus not getting enough light (or leaf surface) and not delivering enough sugar to justify the energy the plant invests in them. Sounds logical? 😁
