I've been to Tristan da Cuhna three times on RFA Blackrover. We often transited between Falklands and Simons town, South Africa and stopped off to show the flag. I bought a few cans of beer in the bar, ate the best crayfish I've ever had and bought a souvenir woollen hat with a penguin embroidered on it. I didn't see any penguins there just donkey's cows and sheep. Our ships football team went ashore to play the locals on a very lop sided pitch. Lovely place and people, happy memories. PS, why have you got a bus stop ??? Never thought to ask before.😂
I do wish UA-cam channels would stop adding music that either doesn’t fit the subject matter or is too loud. This excellent documentary, is ruined by overly loud music. It’s ridiculous.
Yes, I agree...I'd just rather hear live people talking while actually there and the actual sounds of what's going on there. This wasn't too bad though...I knew what I was getting into ... a narrated short mini documentary....
You say this but would be bored out of your brains after a month. Majority of people that are born outside this place wouldnt actually permanently live here and would drive them insane.
This is part of the British overseas. I think British (Great Britain) inland people need to learn from Tristanian resilience and optimism. We have all possible comforts in life, still the constant moaning and seeing the bad side of the country is tiring and UNGRATEFUL. So inspiring seeing these communities.
We are right to be miserable Tristan da Cunha represents true freedom. We are slaves to the elites. Western Society is not the luxury it’s portrayed to be, it’s a rapidly developing into a third world hellhole. I hope these people realise how blessed & privileged they are but God help them if there’s ever another eruption, Southampton is the pits now 🤦🏻♀️
In a world which gets more and more mad for me it would be like a small place in heaven if I would have an house there and one or two dogs and take part with this family like community. Best greetings from Germany
Doors unlocked ? Brings me back to my childhood in the 1960's, I'd never seen house keys because we didn't lock doors, house, cars, I don't think I ever heard the phase, " Is it locked ". That place looks great.
I've always been fascinated by remote islands, but somehow Tristan da Cunha has never really drawn me. The Shetland Islands would be more my thing. I'd love to go there.
Shetland and Tristan de Cunha certainty have a similar way of life. Also will be similar to the Falklands. I've lived in the Falklands for 20 years and Tristan de Cunha looks very much like the Falklands: the houses, the people, the way of life. I suppose if you want to get the feeling of that way of life, then Shetlands will be just the place!
Amazing interesting island .I would like to visit some day .Extremely remote island .Greetings from Punta Arenas, Chile 🇨🇱 where there are strong winds blowing from the Antarctica
In Canada you have many islands or remote places much more remote and isolated than this island. You can explore it and live there. Some are only accessible by boats
This place is on my bucket list. I'm fascinated by remote inhabited islands; I'm getting to visit one this summer (Spitsbergen) and this is another one, much harder to get to. Maybe someday.
I visited Svalbard last year, I was expecting a small, isolated settlement like this one, but to my surprise there is quite an international and vibrant community. Longyearbyen, the capital, hosts over 2,000 residents (permanent and temporary) and has direct flights to Norway every day. It's basically a small city with shops, restaurants, hotels and even public transport. I think that having an airport really makes a difference there. However, there are some smaller towns with Russian miners and Norwegian scientists which are harder to reach. If you want to really experience remoteness, try to visit those: Barentsburg, Sveagruva, Ny Ålesund and especially Pyramiden, an old Soviet mining town that can only be accessed by boat in summer and snowmobile/dogsled in winter. Also be prepared for the 24h sunlight up there!
Imagine a world with No gangs, No drive bys, No honor killings, No carjackings, No assaults, No robberies, No street racers, No vulgar rap, No smash & grabs.... and NO UA-cam! Ahhhhh... just like the 60s! 😃
When the population was moved to Britain in 1961, I was 11years old, and I remember seeing 4 Da Cunhian men building a wooden boat, at an event in the Kelvin Hall, in Glasgow. They didn't look like anyone in the video. I thought that they appeared to be very skilled workmen, but also, they looked quite 'primitive'.
It is an ideal place for a short holiday and to relax. It is a beautiful island. But in order to live, especially if you live in a big city, depression is inevitable. People living there are used to calmness, such a pristine life is normal for them. The enthusiasm of those who are dying to live is temporary.:)
Seems like paradise to me!!!!!!!! Take me away, please, from NYC, with my two cats, and let me share love, peace, and joy I no social media (lol...) with your Family. ❤ no I could not envisage myself living on this island but I could definitely envisage myself having a holiday there and enjoying the Tranquillity and maybe even joining in farming activities if that was available being someone who came from a farming background. I definitely hope to visit their one day❤💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
Great report! Truly a beautiful and unique place where life is simpler. 1:45 Small correction: Edinburgh of the Seven Seas is the name of the town, not the island. It was named after the Duke of Edinburgh who visited the place in 1867.
You obviously have no idea about the history of this place. I wont mention the word on UA-cam but do a quick search on its recent terrible history of abuse on young females.
What a super wee video. I’d love to live there and enjoy the simple life and be part of a caring community. You’re all so lucky though I’d imagine for some it may be too isolating. Happy new year to you all ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My first name is Tristan. When i was a little kid i had a map and i found this island and circled it. As i got older i always came back and tried looking it up. Eventually pictures were up and now on google maps etc. Hopefully one day i can travel there
This tiny island has been the subject of poetry! If I remember correctly it was mentioned in a stanza of an ode by the English poet probably Alfred Tennyson! The ode was in the name of Queen! I read it in the year 1959 in my school! But sadly I don’t remember its lines ! Good old days!
I heard about this island while listening to the BBC on shortwave radio in the 1980's. I've been fascinated by the island since then. I'd love to see how they do their electricity. Looks like wind and solar would be a great part of their power generation.
Thanks for this wonderful and descriptive video. I had sent an aerogram to the Post Office there few years back. They had pinned it on P.O. wall. Unfortunately it was washed away in heavy rains.
I would like to visit Tristan da Cuhna for a few weeks, maybe even a few months or a year. I would like to go for walks over the hills, and along the cliff tops, and do some fishing, also relax and do some writing, and get to know the locals.
It invokes tremendous memories of my childhood where I used to dream of living in an isolated place in poverty But the governmental administration systems have to change social security provided to all education healthcare job systems have to change
Should consult with SpaceX for a StarLink Satellite internet installation .. to achieve normal megabit internet speed as in modern cities .. Should be a God Send to this remote paradise ..

Hi, at the Latitude of 37.4 South its not that far south of the equator, thats about the same as Hamilton City in the North Island of New Zealand! West of that Latitude you will only see the Southern tip of Argentina and Chile. Our Southern most inhabited Stewart Island (population of 450) sits closer to Antartica, now thats isolation! Cheers mate. Harera
Due west of Tristan da Cunha are Argentina's southern Buenos Aires province, southern Middle Chile, and in between. All of these being well north of Patagonia, let alone the very southern tip of Argentina/Chile. Heck, places like Melbourne, Tasmania, and much of New Zealand (including the southern half of North Island) are - latitudinally speaking - further south than Tristan da Cunha. But yeah, much of what makes Tristan da Cunha quite isolated is the vast expanse of ocean (including a considerable distance from the nearest land point, Cape Town) coupled with the tall waves and other physiographical features limiting shipping.
I have a Tristan da Cuhna tie! I wore it at a meeting in London some years ago and was delighted that one person in the audience recognised it.
As a Portuguese i am very happy for this island still have people on it, and good people.

I would move there immediately if approved. Looks wonderful.

Not the only place - the Falklands as well. I have lived in the Falklands for 20 years - they can survive anything
That's nonsense.
@shawnoneil2046 how could you possibly work there?
How fascinating and informative!
Glad you enjoyed it

You say this but would be bored out of your brains after a month. Majority of people that are born outside this place wouldnt actually permanently live here and would drive them insane.
I could have a vacation there❤❤letting my children run and enjoy the nature. What a beautiful place.
Simple life but idyllic. I love how all the residents muck in and support each other. Stay choosy about who you let in to stay permanently.
Just imagine a clean sheet and start again with normal folk.
Away from the Woke the identity politics the bickering etc.

What a destiny it is for people to be born and live life here!

Tristan Da Cunha was the only place in the world not infected with the 1918 Spanish flu.
