Very odd but only yesterday I was scrolling through some of Barry's vids and saw his 1960's potato igloo thing and wondered if he was going to do another odd retro food of the past........and here we are to satisfy my thoughts. Good for you Baz.
My church used to make lots of those jello dishes with molds. Sometimes you can set the mold (with jello in it) in a bowl of warm water for a little bit to help it release.
This also reminds me of the "I-hate-to-cook" book by Peg Bracken (my mum used to have a couple). Very keen on gelatin and aspic and those advertorial tie-ins sorts of things like mayonaise
I cook whole cranberries in orange juice and sugar, it's so cool watching them pop and that's the only way my family will eat cranberries during the holidays
The contents of flavored jello packs are sugar, flavoring and gelatin. It's not pure gelatin powder. This could seriously affect the amount needed and the final product. Love the show just sayin
I’m not well :( I’m on my 3rd lot of antibiotics in 4 weeks as I’ve got my 4th infection in 4 weeks! Autoimmune disease sucks but I have your videos to cheer me up!
Mayonnaise is easy to make, you should try making some if you haven't already, it's just an egg yolk, a little mustard if you like, oil, and white wine vinegar.
Barry, the gelatin they are referring to is Jello, which is a mix of sugar and gelatin, the small package of jello is good enough for 2 cups of liquid, so you were fine with just one packet of pure gelatin. Anymore than that, it will be stiff as a board!
It is a good idea to put hot water in the sink and put the glass in it for a little while to soften it around the outside to help unmold it. Same thing to do with unmolding chocolate too. Just don't let any water get into it. lol.
I'm sure its common in UK too, considering it's common in many European countries. I feel he just didn't realize jell-o was an option. Like, we have it here in Finland in "american section" of bigger stores. I have never bought any or know anyone who has but it is there.
The jelly that we use in the UK usually comes in cubes of concentrated gelatin, sugar and flavouring. You can buy flavoured jelly powder too but it's far less of a common find in supermarkets.
Think of how hard making mayo is. Before mass production, mayo was not something everyone had access to. Ditto for jello. Suddenly both are very available and cheap. So it makes sense folks experimented with them.
I'm sure this is an American recipe, that being said it needed lime (green). Cherry/Strawberry(red), Lemon (yello)Jell-0 in a 3 oz package which has not just gelatin but also sugar in the mixture. Also in America our whole cranberry sauce comes in a can (tin) and from the looks of the photo they repurposed the can as the mold for the "candle" I'm sure it still tastes horrific but if you wanted to give it a proper try may consider making those changes. A very fun video just the same!
Throughout I was thinking....Isn't there plenty of gelatine in the cranberry sauce anyway?! So using 8 sachets would be a brick you could build a house with lol
