  • By now you’ve heard that Alex Murdaugh has been found guilty of the murder of his wife and son and that he’s been sentenced to life in prison. The trial of the disgraced South Carolina lawyer has riveted the nation because of the family’s legacy of power in the region, Murdaugh’s financial crimes and drug use, and a series of related murders.
    Since the case includes so many important players and significant overlapping events, Katie Couric turned to two people who’ve been covering the Murdaugh saga since the very beginning: Matney and Liz Farrell, journalists and hosts of the @LunaSharkMedia podcast and Cup of Justice podcast.

      challenging the system?? the state IS the system... and the system had PAPER THIN, CIRCUMSTANTIAL evidence at best.. and what EXACTLY was the motive??? That he had been stealing money for like 20 years and Pauls boat case so he killed his own family (which even the states witnesses said they we a loving family, never seen fighting) BUT not kill buster for some reason?? Why not kill the lady asking where the money was from the firm? Why not just kill Paul? he was with him alone all day... for every reason there was motive for Alex to kill his own family there had to be at least 20 other people that wanted to hurt Paul or at least get back at Alex for stealing right?!? BUT SURE, FIGHT THE SYSTEM!! you probably got the right guy he was a POS anyway and probably deserved to be in prison for stealing anyway, probably! ...probably.... Certainly wasn't politically motivated tho, just because Alex and Maggie were powerful long time donors for the Democrats and South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson (Republican) (this was the guy who came in on the last day of rebuttal and questioned witnesses) and definitely isn't up for reelection this year, oh and DEFINITELY doesn't have any say on how SLED conducts their interviews would NEVER force a flimsy prosecution by lying to a grand jury about blood spattered clothes and shot shells. @@SS11660 SLED made many, many blunders, very basic stuff was not done ! I initially thought they intentionally tried to help. But it was more a combination of utter incompetence, being disorganized, too proud to call the FBI immediately (no shame in that for a small department that is lucky enough not having to deal with a lot of murders) - and of course deferential treatment of "Mister Alec" that meant they did not even entertain the notion that HE could be their main suspect.
      If a spouse of a murdered spouse has been nearby the murders scene (opportunity) by default he or she will be a "person of interest". Even if they were not near they will be asked for an alibi and that will be scutinized. No need to offend a person that was just traumatized but if a spouse "finds" killed family members and / or the other spouse ... unfortunately often it turns out that it wasnt't evil strangers that did the killing.
      This is different from crimes of passion, where one family member kills the other in a rage, and the situation is clear, and police often will get an immediate confession. No FBI expertise needed for that.
      SLED should have realized that they were out of their league. FBI would have picked up the red flags immediately. No way they would have handed over the house to him next day. No way they would have allowed many many visitors trampling all over the crime scene during night.
      Lawyers their spouses, familie all felt obliged to race to Alex' side. So they wandered around, and later in the night they were even SENT into the house. They ended up in the kitchen and dining area. Cleaned away food from the stove into the kitchen. of course their DNA everywhere.
      it was a wet day. IF there had been footprints or tyre marks from the alleged outside killers - they would have destroyed that evidence.
      Never mind that no one could know if the evil killers were still lurking nearby or had been forced to hide somewhere.
      Interestingly the lawyers (friends and collegues of Alex Murdaugh) did have some apprehensions of how the police handled it, they deal with civil lawsuits or maybe tax affairs, but even a lay person that had watched a little TV could see how police failed to secure the scene. But the social pressure to be seen there as support - even though they could do nothing - was stronger than commons sense. Not that the lawyers could have forced police to do the most basic things.

      @franziskani Рік тому

      @@SS11660 It was the filming of Paul (unforeseeable in the murderous plans of AM) that helped most to get his murderous father convicted. w/o that and w/o the phone and car data, the prosecution would have lost the case. The kennel footage was super important + the phone conversation with a friend that waited for Paul to finish shooting a better video to send it to him, so that a vet could look at the problem the dog had with the sore spot on his tail.
      Paul never got around to finishing that dog video, let alone sending it, but he had created footage (only on his phone that made clear that Alex was at the scene mere 4 minutes before the shootings started. (it was also lucky that his father was too stupid to dispose of the phone).
      His friend waited for the video to come within minutes, meanwhile Paul and then Maggie were shot.
      That is why investigators could be so sure when they had been murdered.
      Paul stood before the kennel, I think Alex only saw his back, saw or herd him on the phone engaged in a conversation with a friend, then ending the call, but did not fully realize that he already recorded (and recorded the voice of his father as well).
      It was also lucky that the idiot denied so long that he was there - he denied it because that messed up his narrative and the timeline that would give him an alibi. It was pure luck that he was not smart enough to take the phone immediately from Paul (after son and mother were dead), take out battery and sim card and hide it in a provisory spot.
      He relied on it that incompetent and submissive police would give him plenty of time to hide and remove evidence - and he was right. Had he taken the phone, AM likely would have gotten away with murder.
      His personal phone that AM had on him while in the kennel, during the clean up and then during the drive to his mother, the stay and back, and car GPS data were also contradicting his story, but the kennel video and the testimony of the friend waiting for a good video was more tangible and touching. If AM had left his phone in the house and had driven over in a vintage car and if he would have been smart enough to dispose correctly of both phones (like he did a good job with the weapons) - he would have gotten away with murder.
      The SLED investigation and their securing of the scene (or lack thereof) was extremely poorly done. They could not mess up phone data, the providers have the data, and the specialists analysed it. And Paul had the most important evidence on his phone. That and the stupidity of his father made the conviction possible. If the case had depended on SLED .... oh dar.
      Also the video from the early evening that showed that AM must have changed clothes when he met police the first time (after the murder). The housekeeper that was adament that she knew he had worn the blue-greenish shirt (she had fixed his collar the morning before). She was sure she had not washed it and had never seen it again. AM did try to nudge / coerce her into changing her testimony after some months. This conversation - out of the blue for her - rattled her so much, that she called her brother who works for the police.
      To a degree the testimony of the worker contributed to the many things that did not add up with AM's narrative. That worker was OCD about how to store away the hose in the kennel area and how to be careful about the foundation of the building and to avoid puddles at certain places when HE did the daily routine of rinsing the kennel area. He knew immediately that someone had used the hose after him - in the time between 4.30 pm and the next morning, when he was called over.
      Police was too incompetent to thoroughly search for tiny rests of tissue and blood in the drains, they must have been there.
      But he was such a good witness, and believeable in his strict adherence to the routines that it was clear - "someone" had done a rinsedown in that area. The hypothetical murders ? (there is no reason why Paul, Alex, or Maggie would have done it, and as we know from their phone data they all arrived later. 6 pm, 7 pm ... so when would they have used the hose and why ? The hired a worker for keeping the area clean for the dogs (and to feed them and the chickens).
      But if the killers did not want to enter their vehicles with bloody shoes - why did they take time out of their day to hang up the hose again ? (but in a sloppy manner so the worker noticed immediately that this was not at all how he hangs up the hose, no water drained out, nozzle not in the right position, etc. And after his routine cleaning the puddles would have dried up before night, even in winter. And they were in the wrong places anywhere.
      This only made sense if Alex had rinsed off cover, shoes, but did not want to draw attention to that. Because police would find it doubtful that outside killers would even bother to clean themselves. And certainly they would not delay their flight to hang up the hose, not even in a sloppy manner.
      They would likely run to their car (with clean or bloody shoes) that they had parked in some distance (hidden in the forest - parking at the house would also mess with AM's narrative for several reasons ). They would jump out of garments and shoes, throw all into a bag, change and only then get into the vehicle. Skillful killers would have worn gloves during the shootings, protective clothes, head covers, and maybe they would even operate with a stolen vehicle so it would not matter if they left traces of DNA, blood and tissue of their victims in the car.
      Alex on the other hand had to race back into the house to shower before he enacted his alibi narrative (visit at mothers house). He could not leave even small traces of tissue or blood in the house (and the shooting was messy, lots of body tissue splattering around) so a precleaning was very important.
      I even think that AM might have given the dog the sore spot, so he could lure dog lovers Maggie and Paul to the kennel area. Where he could kill them and then preclean himself. he knew what wounds and mess those high-powered weapons create (they were also used for hog hunting).

It seems to be a going trend for people of today is to bring down those who have worked hard in building a legacy that others can only wish for but don't want to put the effort into it, much easier to just tear them apart piece by piece. Just let those who really murdered Paul and Maggie sail away into the sunset. The ones who know the truth I hope it keeps them awake at night unable to get rid of the ghosts that will haunt them until they confess or die letting the devil win more souls.

Later on, Paul and Maggie realized Alex hit her in the head and would expose him. That was the real reason he killed Maggie and Paul.
      Supposedly, Maggie didn't let the dogs in the house. They were outside dogs. Why would they be on the porch if not allowed in the house? Moselle is a big place. You always know someone's guilty by pretending to cry in front of the camera or witnesses, but there are never tears. I think it was Maggie that had said Alex was there when the housekeeper "fell", but a male employee (groundskeeper?) said he was not there. I questioned that. I felt it was Alex that killed her from the get-go, especially regarding the lawsuit. It was very odd that after the boat accident the family immediately hauled the boat off. The crime scene was contaminated. No investigation, attempts were made to throw another boy under the bus, immediately tried to manipulate the injured while in the hospital as a self-proclaimed attorney representing them. No care whatsoever about the missing girl. Paul was never handcuffed, arrested or spent time in jail despite what all the kids were telling the officers. The police didn't even bother to notify the missing girl's family. Also Alex's brother saying he cleaned up the crime scene of Paul and Maggie because he felt he owed that to Paul. Wth? And not Maggie, just Paul. No family personally does that. Once again crime scene contaminated and evidence "cleaned up". I feel there's suspicious involvement with Alex's brothers as well that need to be looked into. I commend you two ladies, but I also worry for you. I know what these good ol boys are like and bringing light to their involvement, their turning their heads, their protecting the Murdaugh's and contaminating crime scenes can be dangerous. I feel this could go on for a long time to draw this all out and save this town, but it would take outside law enforcement to come in to do so and prosecute those involved in illegal behavior.

      As for cleaning up the crime scene, I’d recommend listening to Emily D Baker’s analysis. She points out that was definitely a failing of law enforcement for not insisting on securing the scene and instead actively saying they were done with it. It’s possible he was doing it because he was involved somehow, but Emily points out his response actually was pretty normal and consistent with how people respond in that scenario. She points out once the crime scene techs leave there is zero support for the families in cleaning up the crime scene or knowing what to do next. Pretend for a minute that your best friend has a child die and you are there helping out and the police release the crime scene and it is time for your best friend to now go to sleep for the night. As traumatic as the situation is for you and your friend, assuming you believe it is a tragedia accident and your best friend is innocent might there be a part of you that feels maybe you can help your friend out by cleaning up the scene so they don’t have to go to bed after a very difficult, exhausting day knowing the room is covered in the blood, etc. from their precious child? I’m not saying he’s automatically innocent. He definitely could have been involved and covering things up. But the point is for him the cleaning up behavior isn’t strange at all and doesn’t necessarily automatically indicate guilt, either. If someone close to me died and I believe there is no criminal evidence remaining to collect, I also don’t think I would be able to sleep knowing parts of that person are still all over the room. It somehow feels disrespectful to the person who died. Cleaning feels like I’m tying up that lose end and am at least giving their spirit or memory a bit of peace and closure. Plus, it means when I walk in the room the next day I don’t have to immediately be confronted with a powerful reminder of the horror that happened in that room.

      @@hollybigelow5337 I agree with you. I personally couldn't have cleaned up the remains. I would have contacted one of those businesses that do that, but that's just me. I did get a little suspicious that there were no tears on the brother's face, though, but maybe he wiped them before they came out of his eyes. One thing I found suspicious about Alex & his brother's tears is that they both wipe their nose and then wipe their eyes on the same spot on the tissue. I have never wiped my nose and then wiped my eyes on the same spot where presumably there is snot. That's just gross and makes me wonder.

    • @hollybigelow5337
      @hollybigelow5337 Рік тому

      @@robertarnsworth2464 I definitely agree about the suspiciousness ofthere a lot of things. Watching Alex, I never saw anything that even remotely looked like tears. The brother was a little harder for me to read. I'm honestly in a middle spot with him. I don't for sure trust him, but I don't for sure distrust him, either. I would call most of the signals from him mixed. If he is genuinely sad, there is something about him that is different than the average person. However, if he is genuinely guilty there's also something different about him from the typical sociopath. Alex comes off as the typical sociopath to me. I agree that I personally would really struggle to do the cleaning and would prefer to hire someone, but I'll also throw in that that pre-supposes I actually could get someone there in a timely manner to do the job. In this particular case I wouldn't expect there to be any worry about money, but you still might run into the problem that no one is in the office to take the call, or someone takes the call but can't fit you in for 3 days. And I could also see some people wanting to do it themselves rather than outsourcing that task as a final act of honor or love. That isn't me. I absolutely would have to hire someone else to take care of it. But if I had more strength and ability to face a cleaning task like that I absolutely could see it being me. That goes double if I am particularly rich because when I have the money to hire anyone to do anything for me it becomes even more meaningful when I am willing to take care of something myself. The gift of, "I'm not going to outsource this," might genuinely be the absolute biggest gift I could think of giving both to the surviving family members and to the deceased family members. For a fictional example, I could point to Harry Potter when Harry decides he needs to bury Dobby without using any magic. It certainly wouldn't be how I would personally approach that situation, either, but the emotional response still rings true to me, and the sacrifice comes off as being meaningful.

    These two smart women are super warriors!!! There are still so many facts that need to be explored and exposed. I can’t imagine how much pressure these two and their team were under even before Maggie and Paul were murdered. The “good ol boys” gang is tight , secretive and so powerful and they don’t like their secrets coming to light. I hope they are all very careful with their safety as I feel like there is so much more to this story and the more they uncover, the more they are seen as a threat to those involved in unscrupulous and illegal actions. I would really love to know how and why Alec was paying $50,000 a week to his cousin Eddie because there is no way Alec was consuming that many oxy’s and still be breathing. There is so much more to this all. I feel like this is just scratching the surface .

    • @katiehettinger7857
      @katiehettinger7857 Рік тому

      My pet theory is Alex used cousin Eddie as a bagman to distribute drugs and multiple the money he had stolen from his clients. In the wake of the boat accident Alex took the drug profits and stashed them overseas in a country without extradition. The missing funds discovered at his law firm threw a wrench in his plan and prompted the murders. The deaths were to buy time, so he could once again straighten out his account, because he couldn't retrieve the oversea funds immediately. Also he knew the sympathy generated by the deaths of his wife and son would get him removed from the lawsuit. He counted on friends in the legal community and law enforcement to make the witness tampering investigation either go away or stall. Giving him time to sell his US properties, before he disappeared. His plan might have worked if not for the video on Paul's phone.

    It’s called “The Galveston Effect”. An industrial psychologist was studying productivity in a plant, in Galveston, Tx. He found that no matter what variable he changed productivity went up. He would change the lighting, change the assembly line set-up, change work hours and no matter what productivity went up. Eventually he figured out that productivity was increasing because the workers knew they were being observed, not because of any of the other variables.
    That simple experiment became famous in part because it validates the role of “the press” in America. When journalism
    is done well, it requires that a light be shined on the way powerful decision-makers in our society behave…One of my favorite lines (from an obscure Tragically Hip song) asks “Who cops the cops?” The answer is a free press.
