You are so lucky I've always wanted to live there I am an automotive mechanic and to stop corrosion also FYI I used to be a technician on boats in saltwater in Tacoma Washington if you use a little dielectric grease on all of your external electric connections it is designed to keep them from corroding and it will also aid to the waterproofing in place and it will not harm anything love your videos keep it up
Great Video Dustin [as usual]. I have been an avid RCer [planes] since 1970 and currently have a pretty decent collection of drones.
Actually this isn't a bad idea. A water proof platform takes tremendous worry from any one who regularly flies over water and engages in water sports. It can offer a viable concept for fishing particularly when your going for fish in hard to reach estuaries or along salt water marshes and other hard to cast places.
We fish for Red and Black drum of the coast of north east Florida and I can tell you one thing - casting from shore can be a bitch due to the total weight of the lead, hooks [2 aught] and bait [huge chunks of crab].
Its a mute issue if you use a boat,of course, but that's an additional hassle [even if you own one]. With this set up precision casting can be a breeze - not to mention enjoying two past times at once.
As far as the price - I think it could be a little lower [who wouldn't] but considering it is a truly waterproof drone it may well be worth the price.

Mike Michels keep in mind there's two sides to every coin and that there are aerial quadcopters in racing quadcopters for multi rotors if you want to use layman terms lol. Deciding what you want to do and what kind of experience you want will allow you to pick the right quad for you to fly FYI. Dustin does great reviews through a mixed selection with quads.

I've not read all the comments below so maybe this has already been brought up, but it seems like spinning the propellers on one side would "flip" the drone back upright when it is floating in the water. This could be programmed into the drone by the manufacturer as an option that you could execute at need. If they added that functionality it would make this drone even more attractive imo.

I feel like the flip over would be easy to fix for SwellPro. All they need to do is program it to put full power to either the front 2 props or rear 2 props to essentially pull the side under and flip it back over. Sounds plausible in theory.
They improved it on the latest 3+ version 🍻

Exactly what I am thinking! The antennas were strategically put on the bottom, just for this type of situation. I cant fault the Drone company, not until I see it fail to upright itself, with the antennas in the factory positions, on bottom.

Hi Jason the flipping issue is not a drawback actually. we set this by purpose so that the drone won't take off and crash if the body is not a flat platform. anyway, we will find a way to improve this.

I believe the antenna or signal receiver is at the top of the drone for better reception with satellites and under the water there’s no signal that’s way under water drones need to be connected to with the remote so you can still control it. That’s the best explanation I can think of. Nice video I like it. Thank you.
Hi Dustin, first time viewer here. I watched this entire vid. Was blown away by your narration. Love your passion for flying. I've never even heard of this drone until now ! Was seriously impressed with this. My initial thought was that this thing isn't cheap. Absouluty loved the scenery. You are definitely living the dream. How long have you lived in Hawaii ? I've never been there till now :) Incredible !!! My 3 year dream has been to own the Mavic Pro. I've never graduated from the toy grade quads. I have the XS809HW. Not bad for toy grade. I've actually had dreams of owning a Mavic. I've been to Best buy Several time's, just to see it up close, lol. So close yet so far. Which do you like better, this or the Mavic ? We took this drone to Greenland and have just released a full review of this drone in a 7 minute video on our channel. We really wanted this drone to be a success story because it promised everything we wanted in a drone. Stable 4K filming and waterproof. While the thought of a waterproof does sound very appealing, this product really performed poorly. While being waterproof is a great feature, it’s completely undermined by inconsistent performance and poor image quality.

I really do mean that as a compliment. you are so calm. even when I watch the one that you did where the drone didn't make it all the way back home in the rain because of low battery and you had to drive and go get it. I was so stressed out watching that flight, I thought I might even have to go to the hospital or something LOL, and you were just chillin 😂😂
Good review, thanks. I was really thinking of getting one but the 2 major cons, the flipping piece is a major con for me as in the event it goes down far out in the water, your screwed..The gimbal is not all that great, still some shaking and vibration in the video...If I’m filming it has to be smooth but for what it is , I love the Splash drone, maybe next generation..I’l wait..
I believe that mode has now been removed in the Spry+ and it seems much more stable from footage I've seen
The SD 3+ has a better "upright" flipping mode. Ultimately would be awesome if it flipped in water and lost connection and fail-safes to RTH mode it would auto upright and fly home 👍

I know it's been 11 months since you did this test but it seems to me that if the gimble mount was 2 inches longer dropping the camera down another 2 inches, the center of gravity in water would change and automatically flip the drone over.

Is this the best you've tried in the water? I'm looking for one to spot Cobia on the surface of the ocean (spot fishing). When does the 4 come out?
Do you remember you moved the antenna to the upper side of the fuselage instead of the downward originally mounted area! So when you were upside down you lost signal!! Maybe add an additional antenna wire to the original mounting area as a failsafe. I Would like to know the outcome? Charlie
Keeping it on the bottom just looses signal when landing in water. At least in the arm allows a 50/50 chance for reconnect
When you say you taped the FPV & Controls wire to the top of the arms, did you remove the wire from being down in the nipples? Or did you leave them down there, but tape the excess to the top of the arms? I just got my SplashDrone 3 and the wire that is down in the nipple seems to be pretty snug in there and I don’t want to damage anything trying to remove it lol
I pulled it up and out. The end is for the signal.
I suspect that your control signal gets damped when the antenna is moved from the nipples to the arms. Radio waves don't go well underwater. You stated on the SD 2 that the antennas were in the nipples so they would be out of the water when upside down and therefore get a better signal reception. By the way on a pool float test I dropped my SD 3 during recovery , it landed upside down and it self righted without me doing anything. I have not retested that so it may have been a one off event.
I moved my video antenna up into the arm because I lost FPV when in the water when it was in the nipple.
Imagine if it could reverse the props to dive. 100m would be enough.

Does the satellite signal still function and operate while the drone is under water? Does the signal even go through the water? How strong is that signal underwater vs in the air when you connect to the gps ?

How come on the controller screen it’s all scratchy but when you put the video’s final product, it’s clear like crystal? Any editing involved ? Or is it just the controller, and the final product will always look like that without editing

Sub drones wow! Now this I'd love to see! Can you imagine taking that thing down to places where many people wont swim or haven't been yet. Or take it into a underwater cave. At 21.42 you can see that the top cover bolts were loose and probably got water damage internally, that's why is was malfunctioning and not flipping back right side up.
It was lifted because I had opened it to check on it after retrieving it from the water. I am sure I always tighten things up before any water testing.
I know you shot this 2 years ago but I wonder how it coped having been in salt water?
Ah OK I checked SwellPro's website and they state it has a special coating to protect it against saltwater corrosion. They also state it's world first but I remember seeing something very similar back in 2013 from a startup called Aquacopter, I wonder if it's the same people? Interesting Quad though.
In regards to it getting stuck in the upside down position. Maybe they could add a small "forward propelling" motor in between the middle of the rear arms? When you flip it, you hit a switch and it flips it back over.
+Infamous2117 that's an idea but I think just letting it arm for a few seconds upside down would do it.

Yeah but you said on this one you put the antennas on the top and on the inside so they're not stuck in the bottom pieces on the bottom where you put them before😊
For flipover maybe put some weight on one leg. don't know if that works.
I was thinking the same thing except locating it at one or both ends of the forward flying landing bars. This theory could be tested in the pool. Would this help or hinder flying speed into headwinds?
As usual Dustin an excellent review. Was thinking, maybe the added buoyancy of the Go Pro waterproof case in the SD2 raised it slightly higher in the water, enabling the flip over method, to upright it. Possible solution add some extra buoyancy under the SD3. Did you manage to override the 500 meter limit. I assume that in Atti one does not have the limitation, its only in GPS mode. Or am I wrong.

+cory vigh Yes, you can remove limit hooking up to computer and turning the limit off. It uses standard analog 5.8ghz FPV do you can use any compatible FPV monitor or goggle setup.you want👍

not sure if you figured out the reason why its not working while flipped is because signal cant travel through water. it could be modified to have antenna on bottom side to work
+Mar Hog I had the antennas in arms so it should work both right side up and upside down for signal. Originally they are on bottom but signal is lost then when you land on water. SplashDrone has told me they made this version disarm when upside down on purpose
So if you are two far away. To get it back you are screwed ...hmm I️ don’t get that. Did thy tell you a reason?
+Curt Hook if it's not flipped upside down and it goes out of range it will trigger the return to home and fly back to launch position.

bought a DJI spark drone and i can't fly it any more since I live within 5 miles of JFK airport. I use to have a great time flying it around my neighborhood but since the last update it won't let me take off any more at all since I live near the airport, it keep telling me I'm in a no fly zone.

You rotated the drone clockwise during calibration, not counter clockwise. Did that affect anything?

Was the top cap on tight enough, it did look like the the seal was loose after you retrieved it, possibly got water logged

Hmmmm.... pulled the antennae out of the nipple that would have made it above the water when flipped over but can't figure out why it doesn't work when flipped upside down in the water after putting the antennae taped inside the arm...

I'll be contacting SwellPro again soon, updating and doing more testing / fishing with it during the summer 😅👍.
How SD3 holding up to the salt water environment? Would you suggest any additional preventive maintenance that is not mentioned in the manual? Have you ever flipped it since this UA-cam video, where you have to retrieve?
Haven't run it for a few months so we'll see soon. I'd recommend after it dries from a thourough freshwater rinsing (submerge and spin motors in fresh water if possible) apply some corrosion block in and around motors and all metal screws outside. Make sure no water or residue is inside, put a few silica packs inside and seal cover lightly to store, storage batteries to ~50% power until next use 👍
These guys found some corrosion issues on their gimbal. Please post if you found something similar.

I just got the swellpro drone but I problem with with it tilting on the left side when I try to launch resulting in the propellers hitting the ground before lifting up.

How do you find it if it gets lost while flying? Like “Find my Phone” app does for iPhones? When it is on the ground! Or in the lake! And you visibly can’t see it.

Question how about a test flying in the rain? An idea that could solve the flip upside down in the water for the drone? A antenna underneath the drone perhaps on either side of the gimble that is always pointing down and so the flip to upside down would still have an antenna pointing up for a signal

When you had the drone nose for compass calabering you said the directions said to rotate it counter clockwise, but you rotated it clockwise. Witch way correct???

Check your drone regulations for your country. Done need cell phone unless you want to try way point flight.
I want one that has a amazing camera, and that can fly with the best of them. And I want it to be able to just fall or land and it still work underwater. I can dream.. for now lol. That be so soon tho if you could just go to air to water or water to air without having to put anything extra for it to work lol.
