@@user-td2fq8fs1h I recommend that you first go to an oil mill and taste some freshly made extra virgin olive oil.
You will find it COMPLETELY different from anything you have tasted so far.
Now that you know the TRUE flavor of olive oil, search the store for the one that comes closest to it. Out of 20 brands maybe you will find 1 that comes close (maybe). That's the one to buy.
Alternatively, buy it directly at the oil mill, but consider that it will cost you at least double.
ps. forget Carapelli and Bertolli, they are crap.

My understanding of the term "Cold pressed" is it doesn't mean it is pressed when the olives are cold. It means no heat is used in the extraction process and no chemical process is used.

The thing I go by is the peppery burn in the back of the throat. Olive oil has an antioxidant in it that burns your throat. If I don't get that, I assume it's fake or old. I like a strong olive oil flavor, but there are some authentic varieties from some regions that are more mild in taste, but they should also have that throat burn sensation.

A 92 year old friend of my
mine born and raised in Italy and whose family made their own Olive oil. She said it is the utmost importance for taste that the oil is derived from ripe black olives. Most in US are processed from green unripe olives which gives a bitter aftertaste.

I use California 100% medium extra-virgin olive oil it’ll have a sticker on it that says 100% on the front. There is a doctor whose name is Mandel who recommends this extra-virgin olive oil he says it’s one of the best ones because it’s made at one place it’s not. A Global blend. In other words, it doesn’t come from three or four different countries first cold press.

I use the California Olive Ranch one because it has the cheapest price tag and it’s real extra virgin olive oil. It’s also easy to obtain for me.
Unfortunately I moved recently and the Walmart I’m by now is a smaller one and doesn’t carry the brand, but the Winco right beside it does which is nice but it only comes in the 16 oz size. The Walmart I used to live by actually had the biggest sized one which was cheaper per oz.

Here in Germany, Bertolli is 2,99€ on sale and 3,99€ regular. It’s considered crap. We buy Greek olive oil like Terra Creta in tin cans (~6€) or real Italian evoo like Frantoio Cutrera (~22-23€). I prefer the Greek nowadays, since you get better value for price. The oil is green not yellow and it tastes like fresh cut grass and Mediterranean. Best Allan

California Ranch is super bland in my opinion. I think it's changed. I spent a lot of time looking up taste tests and it was often at the top, but it is DEFINITELY not nearly as good as even just a pretty cheap Trader Joe's brand. I ended up with Pompeian Robust and am finally happy. Strongly recommend it for people who like olive oil that tastes like olive oil! If you are looking for a bland, neutral olive oil (in which case I don't know why you are buying EVOO in the first place, but whatever) then California Ranch is the one to get.

Bertolli is the weirdest olive oil I've ever tried. Although it says "rich," it has absolutely no flavor, unlike Pompeian Robust which has a really nice flavor and leave my food tasting moist.

I agree that Pompeian Robust is da bomb.
I just bought another bottle yesterday; I go through it like water.
I find that it cost a little less at Walmart than many other stores.
I only buy it at established reputable stores, not on Amazon, since I don't know if I'm getting the genuine product, or if it's past its date of use.

One doctor on here said if you put in in the fridge and it comes out cloudy and thick it's supposed to be real olive oil or not. Anyone verify or confirm this?

    • @Birdylockso
      @Birdylockso 2 роки тому

It maybe true before, but I've heard that big producers have gotten smart and manipulated their products just enough to have the same reaction in the fridge. So, we are back to square one on that.
I'd just check the "Harvest Date" on the back of the bottle. It should be as fresh as possible. Also, check to see if the oil is sourced from various countries. If so, it won't be as good. Single estate with harvest date are now my criteria, plus the certification being a bonus.

I mean if you want the best taste then go for the expensive, but, if you need to eat healthier and need cholesterol down... it doesn't matter what brand unl;ess your going to a dollar tree! I then would question the olive oil if it were a dollar lol But other than that Olive Oil is Olive oil unless you're trying to go for the taste.

The area I live in, the northern part of the San Fernando Valley, in SoCal was an olive grove starting late 1800's. I have 2 trees which are over 120 years old in my yard. They produce olives every year although their size are small. I'm trying to see if I can learn to make olive oil and not throw them away this year. Greetings!
