California olive ranch led a fight to get California olive oils certified and tested real. Several years back when the New Yorker article shook up the industry revealing that most "Italian" olive oils were either cut, or fake or blended from several countries. Some of this gangster oil even was machine lube grade canola oil and killed a few people in Europe. So look for dates, California source and certicfication. The California Olive Oil Council (COOC) is currently the only organization in the United States that provides olive oil grade certification, showing a dedication to domestic industry growth and quality standards.
I have been using the California brand (100% California sourced) for a few months now strictly for its health benefits. I take a few small sips every day and I really like it. It does burn the back of your throat a little and tastes peppery as the experts say that real extra virgin olive oil should be like. Last week I ran out and decided to try the Braggs brand because they certainly make the best Apple Cider Vinegar. In my honest opinion I don't get the burn in the back of the throat or even the peppery taste with the Braggs brand. It also seems more oily or greasy than the California brand. The Braggs brand cost me a couple dollars more for the same amount so it was a little more expensive. I feel the California brand has better quality than the Braggs and with that being said I will be going back to the California brand once I run out of the Braggs Extra Virgin olive oil. I will still continue to buy the Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar but not the Olive Oil. Please remember this is just my opinion. Always do your research and try a few different brands and stick with the one(s) you like. Enjoy your olive oil. 😀
ANY olive oil that is imported should be suspect for adulteration. The olive oil mafia in Italy has gotten very good at faking olive oil. Stick with ANY 100% California olive oil that has both a harvest date and a best by date. Bari is a good one, also UC Davis makes it's own. Bragg does not have both dates.. . It also does not have any certification [COOP] as shown on the California oil. These are critical! The California olive oil might not have your favorite taste, but at least you can be sure it is not 50% Canola oil.
I learned many years ago from an Italian importer for Olive Oils that they can mix soy, canola-whatever with the Olive Oil and sell as pure. Do your research!
The old guy on "The Moss Report" recommended California Olive Ranch because of their laboratory analysis for high polyphenols and for its reasonable price. He gave a higher recommendation for Life Extention's brand but it was close to twice the price.
Maybe that was a special batch or older bottle. Newer ones Maas produced for Walmart etc are mixed with many random olives from different parts of the world instead of one location
He did & I wondered about that. I would choose that video, way better detail than this video here, but question marks everywhere. You need to go BEYOND the label. This video HERE is not that great ;)
Not mentioned and very important?: The Age from date pressed. If the bottle is more than 1 1/2 up to 2 years since pressed and bottled, it is on its way to being rancid, which affects the taste, quality and may affect your health.
I always recommend buying olive oil from the provinces of Córdoba or Jaén, in the south of Spain, with a Protected Designation of Origin. In this way you will always have the security of buying 100% high quality olive oil.
@@RRaucina In the online shop of Mueloliva you can order one of the best olive oils in the world. I recommend you "Picuda" which is made whith olives of the variety Picuda from the south of Córdoba.
I understand that the Bragg's brand was sold off maybe 2 or 3 years ago. Anybody know to who? One person I know said a Chinese company. I really don't know but he also said their apple cider vinegar acidic content was half a point lower than the original. If this guy says the true test is the best taste than he should be extolling the taste of the California brand which has distinct flavor and a nice peppery finish. Try a taste out of a metal tablespoon. Put the spoon in your mouth and you should be able to slide the oil off the spoon with your lips with a clean smooth finish look on the spoon. If it leaves an oily or drippy look than it is probably junk.
That Braggs bottle doesn't have a harvest date, while the California bottle does have a harvest date. So since the Braggs is missing a harvest date, there's no way of knowing how old is this olive oil.
Nobody has mentioned the California brand says "MEDIUM" highlighted in light green near the bottom in small print. I've read any oil that says "medium" or "light' is not full strength olive oil and usually means other cheaper oils have been added to it. This also probably accounts for why it tastes different.
Bari olive oil off hiway 99 in the Central valley is an old family farm and you can visit and see the process and orchards. I get gallons for $50 and use it for all cooking. Try it out. They also make organic in smaller bottles of several varieties.
EU olive is more safe than any area I think because the restricted rules ( check google ) ..olive fruit not really much pesticide for all I know but they may do chemical spray
Yes if it does not have a born on date or at least a yr and season then it's usually not considered premium as you have no idea how old it is. These only have an expiration date. You may not find these in groceries stores.
If any EVOO is harsh and more bitter on your palate it means that younger olives were used in the production. The younger the olive the more bitter and harsh the flavor. Due to this most oils blend olives from various regions to market to more sensitive palates.
I’m trying really hard to be an olive oil snob. I think the California brands are pretty good. Dark glass bottles, harvest date, not more than one year old. 100% cold pressed extra virgin olive oil. To all my fellow olive oil snobs. Feel free to add any helpful info😊 I think this guy has a long way to go, before joining the club.
I never buy first press, alway cold press. They are not the same. Cold press is better. I buy extra virgin olive oil in a dark bottle, alway look at the market date. The expired date.
@@lorismith2354 first press is arguably the best because it's the first time oil has been extracted from the olive. For additional extractions, they may use different methods. Cold press just refers to the temperatures reached during the process. For good olive oil, it's no higher than 100-120 degrees or so. But, for other oils, "cold pressed" is baloney. Temps get really high during the extraction process.
Thank you! i will stick to the coconut oil i make , first press you can taste more of the aroma in the coconut oil, cold press unrefined you get more nutrients then you wiil in first press.
“First pressed” - means the olives were crushed and pressed once...makes sense right? Olive pressed more than once are considered lower quality, and do not qualify as extra virgin. “Cold pressed” - means that no added heat is used when pressing the fruit for the oil. First Cold Pressed is always your better choice for EVOO.
CA Olive Ranch is excellent, but they now have their original organic AND one that is a mix form different country origins, at half the price. So the later I would not trust myself. I've not tried the Braggs.

Back in the 80's before the wine craze spoiled Napa valley, I would buy olive oil from an old Italian family deli - Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing.
