Such an astute question! The map that I'm working with in this video is a simplified one that just shows a general depiction of the Atacama desert being located on the western (leeward) side of the Andes. In my drawing on the screen, though, I shouldn't have extended my orange, arid condition line down the entirety of the west side of the Andes. If you look at a satellite view of the Andes, you'll notice that the rain shadow effect actually does flip its orientation south of 30 degrees. South of 30 degrees, the western side of the Andes has much more lush vegetation (since it's now the windward side), while the eastern side of the Andes is drier (since it's now the leeward side.) Thanks for pointing this out! You can really notice the difference if you zoom in on this map. muir-way.com/products/south-america-1922-relief-map
