Genial.
Beautiful. She's obviously offering a different take than Helm and The Band. There is so much depth in this woman, the product I guess of a lot of living, a lot of roads traveled, some to dubious destinations. Beautiful, deep music.
+Roderick MacIver Well, now that our good friend Levon is gone, I can think of no one better to sing it for him. At least we still have Rickie. This got me misty.
I remember when I heard her sing Chuck E's in love in the early 1980's and i thought she was cute but nothing special now in 2023 I am hearing here for the first time since 1981 forty 42 yrs later and I have discovered that she turned into a VERY soulful singer and I love it when did this happen I mean when did she stop being just silly pop into meaningful interpretation fantastic
I don't understand those who do not like this cover. If you want to hear the Band do it, fine. But RLJ tends to do this with her covers. She slows them down and deconstructs them. It's her thing, and she is very good at it. So if you hear her do it, and it's not what you like, why are you here listening to her? If this is the only RLJ song you've ever heard, I suppose you'd better go and listen to Chuck E.'s in Love, and you might want to check her out doing Sympathy for the Devil, and Walk Away Renee. After that come back and see if you still hate this.
Poetry, set to music by the larynx of a master, . . . . no tricks, no machines, no obfuscation, just the real deal; try searching for her duet with Bonnie Raitt, Farm Aid, Angel from Montgomery
I agree, this is not one of my fave remakes by RLJ (and I'm a long-time fan...since the 1st album). Love what she does w/"Walk Away Renee" & the song by Hendryx (can't remember the name right now), but this one doesn't do it for me. Check out Aretha Franklin's version (stellar) imho. But that's the beauty of great songs & masterful artists - you may not love it, but they're creating art!!!
+wkbbrat I think in light of what went on down there, and what should have gone on down there, it is probably good to remember these days that the title is actually Letters From the 9th Ward/Walk Away Renee. I mean since the 9th Ward is not really there any longer. I spent some time there with WCom. The first day it was intimidating, but only for a day. A lot of what is good about the South was right there in the 9th. Of course, I had been in Memphis for a while so I was a prepared yankee. I hear Rickie is back in N'awlins with Mac R. Hoping to see something come out of their close proximity soon.
I'm a big Rickie Lee fan. Having said that, this is probably the worst cover I've ever heard her do. One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite artists. Wow. Had to put on Levon Helm with The Band to recover.
God this woman is soulful... I love her spirit.
Always breath-taking. Stunning version.
love RLJ ....she was one of my 1st albums I ever bought when I was 13yo xox

,,, why have I not heard this before now,,, without hesitation,, playlist it,,
Levon's was pure country, this is blues/gospel. Apples and oranges, each one valid in its own right.
Wow! Its like a different song!

It's "Up from the sky", and it's Hendrix (not Hendryx)my bad. :-)

Hi Bill Thanx for the info - I assume the 9th Ward is in N.Orleans & this referred to Katrina?
BTW who's Mac R. ???
Yes, N'awlins but it was pre Katrina. Mac Rebenak (a.k.a. Dr. John)
Rickie takes this in an interesting direction, but it doesn't really end up anywhere. She can do this better; it needs work.
I vote its genius.
You ain't Tom Waits that book was ridiculous you didn't even know what the hell you were talking about!!!!!!@ Joe Baldwin would be pissed off
Terrible. Sorry, but it is. This is not her finest moment, imho.

You are so right. I love her but this was just awful.
I agree...really wonderful version.
