Saw her 3 times in LA back in the early 80’s. She was great and even better the one time she was drunk. I miss this kind of intelligent songwriting ...
Beautiful POET, story teller and pianist! Gushing Talent ! That is missing today…anyone who followed her knows this is epic! I saw her in summer 1979 at Blossom… Ricki Lee Jones and Joni Mitchell will be remembered as legendary talents.
yes when she hit the scene I couldn't believe the depth of her songwriting...her lyrics were not perfect rhyming stanzas ... the words and her execution of them were flying all over the place! it was almost as if the thoughts were going to jump off the record! it was scary and exciting at the same time...she was taking us on a little journey and drawing us into her world full of colorful characters and situations! it was almost like prose come to life in song...she will go down in history as one of the most unique original songstress of all time!
I remember when Joni Mitchell was trying to do this kind of stuff with 'Summer Lawns' and 'Hejira' ... it just did not work. Rickie was a natural at this. She made it look easy, and for her it probably was. Joni struggled and never got it right because she's basically a folk singer, not a jazz musician, and she tried to force it. 'Court and Spark' was the closest she would ever get. She desperately wanted to move away from folk, but it never happened. Still, she tried.
@@ardalla535 Your reply is very interesting. Rickie is often compared to Joni, but usually negatively. For all of Joni's griping, she's renowned, far more than Rickie, who deserves equal esteem. I think Hissing and Hejira are Joni's masterworks, along with For the Roses. But I think Pirates is the equal of them all. I think it's also the very last album of the genre of poetic singer songwriters.
@@ardalla535 Yes, Rickie is often compared to Joni Mitchell, but it's neither accurate nor fair. They sometimes look alike in photos--that's the extent of it, and that's entirely the shallow reason they are sometimes compared by critics who don't understand her music. They are nothing alike, except that both are great songwriters. There is NO ONE like Rickie Lee Jones. Her poetic imagery and the symbolism in much of her work is incomparable to anyone. She stands alone as a unique voice. And how lucky we are that she sings to us.
Just saw her tonight in Atlanta GA. Small venue. Brought tears to our eyes. She seemed to be a little fragile and tired but the music was brilliant. Wow.... Thank you Rickie.
I remember back in the late 70s how Rickie would dance through the door of the Comeback Inn in Venice, Ca. She was pretty high sometimes..lol. and she'd take the stage of this tiny little jazz club and just blow everyone away. Then she got that hit Chuckies in Love and away she went!!! I've seen her twice in concert and it's always fantastic!
She is an amazing artist who can bring all kinds of emotions to the table. Her unique style and songwriting is extremely poetic. My favorite Weasel and The White Boy Cool!!😎😋
What kind of shit world do we live in where this goes unrecognized and so many rock critics are with a straight face telling people that Taylor Swift and Beyonce are writing deep and intelligent lyrics?
I said "Bird, we just gotta tell them" And they turn and ignore us And the only heroes we got left Are written right before us And the only angel who sees us now Watches through each other's eyes And I can hear him In every footstep's passing sigh He goes crazy these nights Watching heartbeats go by...
This is how she should always sing this song--mostly spoken. The crushingly beautiful lyrics are more important than her singing voice. She is first a poet.
+Pat Bibb doesn't matter ~ She was the Queen of Cool, she always will be the Queen of Cool. That title is taken now. It can never be applied to anyone again! Was sad though when I moved to Seattle and learned that she had left Tacoma two years before I got here. Need to journey back to L.A. one more time I guess.
+1peachcowboy1 OMG really? Nearly moved there to bartend on Bourbon Street, then Katrina hit. Have a couple of ex-dancer friends (I was a DJ) who have moved there and are trying to get me to move there. Seems the leather goods I made for one of them is a hit on FetLife and my products are in demand there since 50 Shades Of Grey came out. Living in an icebox at the moment. Might have to change direction soon, thanks for the info. I am sure she is hanging with Mac R.
The voice ages along with the rest of our bodies. It gets harder to work the diaphragm just like it's harder to work all our muscles. She's in her 60s now.

She writes the story of my life....😖
She floored me! I still say she came along to finish off the 1970's and it was the most welcomed surprise... RLJ!

I'm German and don't understand her lyrics, and so I need her singing and not her talking, sorry... 😢
Wonderful.. the soundtrack to my teenage years.

I"ve heard of Ricki Lee Jones, but I don't think I've ever heard any of her music. But I just watched this, and it made me cry. What's up with that?

Iam too
I love her early CD's, but this recording is hard to listen to.
It is, but I think she's having some problem
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What has happened to her voice it seems very screechy. Is it the mike? Or 30 years of drug abuse?
The voice ages along with the rest of our bodies. It gets harder to work the diaphragm just like it's harder to work all our muscles. She's in her 60s now.
Mr Nougat I love Ricky but she's loosing it. It's sad but true. I'm embarrassed just listening to it.

Very sad ballad, sad, no way round.
Her voice is totally ruined. Doesn't any body hear that?
No way! It’s not as strong here but still very capable.
