Always original, she never got homogenized into the music "industry!"
Bravo
"When I was young, I was a wild, wild, one." Who can't relate, especially when it comes with Ms Jones singing?
She sang that lyric in Horses as well, and based on interviews she’s given and her book, she ain’t lying! Her lyrics are touching and insightful. A genius imo.
So you where a dish
It still always makes me tear up a little.
❤
Rickie Lee Jones is one of my all time favourite woman singer/ song writers. She’s one of the greatest singer/ song writers of all time. She’s an inspirational woman who’s inspired so many women to evolve and become better versions of themselves..She’s soooo cool, motivational and insightful.. I love listening to her music when I’m feeling sad and lonely.. She’s my own personal pick up 🆙 gal..
Rickie Lee Jones makes this world a better place, God bless her always..
There is no talent like hers--such a gifted musician, songwriter, singer!
I know Pirates was your shooting star, Rickie, but Flying Cowboys, to me, will always be your glorious nebula! And Magazine is the space it resides in. Gorgeous music, thank you!
❤❤❤
you are mostly right but in my opinion that first self titled album is a masterpiece and it’s easily the best thing that she ever recorded 💿
man, she just gets a chokehold on your identity and wrings it right out of you! Breathtaking stuff.
I am a fan since the beginning. There is no one like her. I am enchanted by such personal creativity in the same way by Joni Mitchell, and Joan Armatrading. However Rickie's whole life is like performance art.
You’ve got great taste. Don’t forget Bonnie Raitt.
I’m loving her book plus just saw she’s been posting all year on her UA-cam channel!
RLJ broke big in my senior year in high school, I liked Chuck E but did not pick up on her as someone I wanted to listen too much. Then two years later in 1981 I went to see a movie in a nearly empty theatre and got there really early and the theatre had the Pirates LP playing. I fell in love with that album and I was hooked, it is such a relaxing LP. After the movie I went to the record store next to the theatre and got Pirates and her debut LP and have been loyal ever since. Thanks RLJ.
'On Saturday Afternoons In 1963' (from debut album) is a song of hers that always hits deep with me for some reason.
I love her voice, I could listen to it all day. I love the gentleness of it. I used to listen to the beginning of Little Fluffy Clouds over and over just for her voice at the beginning, and of course, on UA-cam there is now the recording of the full interview.
But how "in her face" he gets. Why can't he sit back a little?
I wasn't much of a fan of hers, but many years ago found this song and knew it was something special. Somehow found it tonight on UA-cam. If it moves you like it moves me, then you are lucky.
My bf played this song one night and we danced to it. I started to cry at that beautiful song and I will hold that moment with me forever. He brings me so much happiness. Great song.
I love your story. My boyfriend in 1979 played RLJ for me the first time, her first record. It will always be magic. Here I am at 59 years old. He's my friend still, and Rickie is still our favorite artist of all time. ❤❤❤ She brings love and life to everyone.
@@SFVGIRL aw I love that - ♥️
LOVE , LOVE , LOVE RICKIE LEE JONES - One of my favorite shows was at the Wiltern Theater in the 90s. I screamed out I Love you Rickie when she was getting ready to perform We belong together . I was probably her youngest fan that evening and I sang every song and That was a birthday gift to me from a best buddy who surprised me with the tickets
...this whole album is BEYOND AMAZING!!...
"The Horses" and "Satellites" and the whole shebang..... good lawd.
Rickie IS TENDERNESS.
Also sharp, wise, brave and funny. I love how fast she reacts, taking his seat 🏴☠️ 😊
Mama Rickie ✊🏽❤️
Always loved to hear this woman sing. But, even more, love to watch and listen to her speak.
Amazing soul
You should check out her autobiography, last chance Texaco - which she narrates : ) 😊
On Aug. 12, 1979 my wife and I took our 8 year-old daughter to her first big-time concert -- Rickie Lee Jones at Portland's Civic Auditorium. One of the best concerts of our lifetime.
i adore her so much 🥹 she’s an absolutely precious person, so soft spoken but so wise and soulful and quietly confident. i love you so much rickie!!
Wonderful poem. I've always loved this song, since I first heard it. I get the shivers when she sings "Long coats on the prairie".
Fascinating how she got Arsenio Hall to retreat from a line of inquiry without being aggressive, and then kept the heat on him throughout the interview without apparently doing so. This is a serious woman.
She is my favorite singer of all time
Fell in love with a woman I was dating while playing the album Pirates at her house a bunch of times in 1999-2000. Every time I hear it, it totally represents all the feelings, hopes, yearning, and pleasure of that long encounter with "J", who ended up marrying someone else long ago. Thank you, Rickie, for all the incredibly original, heartfelt music!
I’ll never forget that New York club where a dwarf named Christian, a college friend of my boyfriend at the time, sang “we belong together” and I realized there was so much to RLJ aside from Chuck E... obsessed with her ever since
Incredible Gallup and spacing. God Bless Walter Becker and RLJ
Saw Rickie on tour in support of "Flying Cowboys" about this time. Lyle Lovett was on the bill, too. Talk about a one-two-punch-best-bang-for-your-buck concert! Great night.
I saw this tour. I had brought my girlfriend, a fan Lyle's to see him at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. We hadn't planned to stay for the second act. You'd think as a performer I should have known. Not familiar with many of her songs, by the third song, people were weeping and I was hooked. It was the best live music performance I have ever seen. I have never been so blown away.
Rickie Lee was guest vocalist on Lovett's beautiful North Dakota song. Check it out.
She is a fascinating person
This is a song of absolute concentrated JOY and she is completely bursting with it so much she cannot contain it.
WHAT. A. GODDESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a fan! I was a fan at the beginning! Reading her book, "Last Chance Texaco." I would love to see her in concert again.
Why oh why did she never get the recognition she deserved? Girl much lol
She has always been so bad ass.
This song resonates so well for our modern times as well. My wife and I did share one special if fleeting and seemingly inconsequential connection with her at a show in Albany NY a few years ago given her great sense of humanity. I will not repeat it here it already being elsewhere. In the totality of things I see this song slightly differently given the ups and downs in our individual lives. None of us are a fixed point in space but moving targets. No one is Polaris, the same as they were 20 years ago or even last month. Also, the further we project out we become more erroneous making the past the only constant in our inconsistent memories. That is what makes Rickie Lee Jones not only our very own Grande Dame of Poetry but our Living Riddle of the Sphinx. One great lady.
Love ricky lee!
I remember seeing Rickie Lee in NYC sometime around 1990. She was amazed how much love was coming her way. She actually blushed, and said "You really LIKE me??" 😢 Beautiful memory
I'm SOOOOO glad I have her LPs, because the quality of the videos from SNL, Arsenio, etc, do her no justice. I adore her and her music.
My reason to sing, drum and love! I hope she ' good in New Orleans!
Musical genius
I bought this album Flying Cowboys and omg i fell in love. She is drop dead gorgeous and has voice of angelic love.
Wow, it was 5 years since the last album? Wow, she really pumped them out during that first 5 years. I missed Flying Cowboys, but know the first 3 very well.
I saw her twice live on stage in Hamburg (Germany) great concerts. Rickie and Mitchell are what i like
This is brilliant ! - the fluffy clouds gal- is awesome !
When I was young.....I was a wild, wild one....
Wow. She is so great!
What magic between these 2 .
And Rickie is so candid and yet so shy 🥀🥀🥀
I was in junior high when "Chuckie's In Love" came out, and I bought the 45.
I love this song so much...
Fell in love with her the moment I saw her wearing that beret and smoking that cigarette on her debut album cover.
That album was fabulous. Great sessions musicians and her voice was hypnotic.
I love her!
This song is so epic, long coats on the prairie, who can I turn to, who can I trust...I have covered this tune a couple times. The pinnacle of Rickie's artistry IMHO, like Tom Petty Don't Come Around Here No More, stands out above the rest.
Just a great talent.
Her voice, such an amazing talent.
God, I love her. I never miss her live. This album was as good as the first 2 !!!! If you haven't head the Other Side of Desire....it's right up there!!!!
FLYING COWBOYS is 2nd best due to production by Walter Becker but equally inconsistent...
This was actually her 4th album. Magazine was her third and it was wonderful too.
What a beutiful woman.
Perfect conversation at the end, men are tender.
Wonderful conversation with Arsenio...you are an inspiration for one who has been lost inside themselves.
One of my all-time favorite albums...
Simply amazing!
I remember her performance of Check E's in Love from SNL and went out the next day and purchased the album at Sam Goody's on Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Smitten ever since.
I have loved her since she 1st started. An amazingly talented singer-songwriter, & human being. I understand how many don't get it-- it's a very nuanced stance, aka, Steely Dan. Almost a performance artist. Ala Kate Bush (in a way).
RLJ is sublime.
What a wonderfully intimate and unusual interview. Bravo to them both.
she's so fascinating
I love your voice! x
That is so beautiful.
I agree totally! So sultry, smooth, smokey.
Such a great album! Lyrics, music, and overall feeling of the album is innovative and thought provoking.
That is perfection
Rediscovering her again..one of my fave artists...debut album. Pirates..magazine.. flying cowboys..pop pop..naked songs... evening of my best day..sermon on expo blvd... other side of desire..
HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading her well written biography, 'Last Chance Texaco'.
how beautiful she was here
Honest & Open
Amazing
love this song
Sooo cute!
I ' m goin to order your Book! You are my mususical love!!
“When I was 14 I was afraid of my voice.”
Rickie Lee Jones
Is that a lyric in her song? (I'm reading her book now and am thinking "Did she say that in the book...?")
@@JayKauffman I read it somewhere
Don’t think it’s a lyric
Arsenio is the best always was.
Rikki!!!. Good interview. 2018
Seems like a talented lady with charm
I think she's far more well known for "Little Fluffy Clouds" than anything else.
Only to you..
Most people who listen to the ORB , aren't even going to know who is being quoted at the beginning of that song.
Unlike you. I loved Rickie in 79 and the ORB in 90..
Get some knowledge, cause this is a stupid comment
Chuckees in love and Danny's all star joint I think. She won a Grammy for making whopee.
She’s got a beautiful voice.
Never liked the scat style but she’s definitely talented
Brilliant stuff from.the sexy need
How adorable was Rickie lee here?
What were the skies like when you were young?
Little Gabriel Iglesias clouds.
They ran on forever...
The great Peter Erskine on drums - as on the recording
Half J Mitchell half LAnderson the very cool RLJ.....
Reminds me of Laurie Anderson love em both
"I think men are more tender than women, they just wear a harder mask."
100%
Truth
👏👏👏👏❤️🙌🤗
stone beauty...digging deep an leading,...
She grew up in my homesweethome Phoenix..where wayy too many are moving to..noo!!
She’s so cute
Ricky Lee should do at least one cover from Joni Mitchell! Almost every female vocalist in Rock owes a lot that Joni Mitchell!
Does anybody realize that's Walter Becker on the bass in the back by the drums?!!
“Little fluffy clouds"
Walter Becker who produced this album is supposedly on bass here. low quality video. It's hard to see
The loud elephant synth noise is funny for about one second!
It was a little much.
@@goobytron2888 Album version is exquisite though! 🐘✌️
She was the Joni Mitchell of the eighties!
Yes
Uwielbiam Rickie Lee ..... I love Rickie Lee ......... szczególnie gdy jest w spódnicy i rajstopach ...... especially when she is in skirt in pantyhose
Walter Becker wrote this and produced the album .is he here?
Chucky Gilmartin entered eternal rest in 2006. Never have I known a man who walked the walk in all of his affairs. His first wife and daughter know I loved him enough to know he needed to fulfill his obligations as a father with the time remaining. I am not the new Mrs Gilmartin
