1904 Large Screwdriver [Remake]

- Screwdrivers and wrenches are now for sale at www.handtoolrescue.com
The largest in antique screwdrivery, this screwdriver is based off an 1904 patent by William Ward, but with several modern improvements. These are sometimes referred to as "Perfect Handle" screwdriver due to the name H.D. Smith Co. used for there line of screwdrivers will a similar style.
Each screwdriver is made from 1144 steel, is 10.5in/26.6cm long, and weighs 1lb/454g. The square shaft is 5/8in/1.5cm thick. The blade is 1in/2.5cm wide and 1/8in/0.3cm thick. Blade is hardened to 52 Rc.
The blade on the screwdriver is now a consistent width, unlike the tapered design of most modern screwdrivers, to assist in removal of countersunk screws. The blade tip also has a hollow-ground design ensuring 1/10in/2.5mm of the tip is parallel, allowing for maximum engagement with the fastener. The handle has been re-positioned so that it is perpendicular with the blade to allow for increased strength when using the screwdriver for prying. The handle has also been designed to encapsulate the handle scales, so that even without brass pins, the scales will stay in place. The square shaft allows you to use wrenches to increase the amount of torque you can apply to the fastener if they are really stuck!

Big thank you to @yxecnc as well!

That was fantastic, really interesting and that machine is a beast just eating the steel when it was hogging out the handle. I need to get one, do you ship to Scotland?
Make some matching sets for 1" 1/2" 1/4"
Please make the mini one? ide be forever grateful.. I think 5 inch.. overall
For the next video you use the CNC in, could you put the coolant into a milk carton, see who notices ?
(or freaks out, as using actual milk is a terrible idea)
I'll jump on that bandwagon for a smaller version. I have a WW2 rifle that this would look perfect next too for the four screws on it. And perhaps a bottle opener?
I would truly love a set of these in more "standard" sizes. I don't get too many 1" screws, but plenty of the smaller ones.
Personally, I have used plenty of big flathead screwdrivers during work and not once was it to turn a screw. It was always for reaching, prodding, prying or whacking things. I feel like a problem I would have with this model is that it is quite short for how thick it is.
yes. i'd totally go for a much, much smaller one.
Buy your standards at a hardware store numbnuts. He’s not reinventing the wheel here.
@@kfossa344 wow he didn't just invent the screw driver?? We're all shocked.
@@sebastianflynn1746 settle down, son
RIP that carbide insert. Totally get why it had to be sacrificed for our viewing pleasure. Pouring one out
Wouldnt even sacrifice it. They thrive on heat. Cooling is usually more for the material stability than the cutting bit.
I was fixing to say, I cut dry on manual all the time, .200 to .250 with no problem. What's the thickest anyone has taken with no coolant? Beat my rookie numbers!
yeah bout the same for steel, more and i start to get nervous :D
I would have used air.
@@MattWeber carbide is just one of those materials that, like you said, thrives on abuse from its owner. Stare at it the wrong way though, and it'll shatter like glass.
I was like, "who cares about cooling, really". then later I saw the sparks and I started getting the feels for the tooling!
I was surprised to see milk used as a coolant.
@@AxxLAfriku hey. No lroblem although i hardly think this is the place for such conversation. I advise you to not continue lest people think it's not appropriate.

If you're ever running late on a video, you should just take two or three similar tools and explain their differences. The explanation part of this video was incredibly interesting and, quite frankly, you're really good at it.
Edit: Hand Tool History
Thank you! I do that on instagram all the time actually!
I could open some serious paint cans with one of those.
That whining sound during the making of the wood inserts was a truly unwelcome surprise, I've never removed my headset so fast in my life.
It's actually so annoying I had to keep it in the video to share. It haunts me.
Haha, I love how UA-cam auto closed caption trys to decipher machine noise as words or music. Like at 1:42
I love this too! It did the same thing with the last Remake video and it was hilarious.

[Carbide screaming for coolant]
@@HandToolRescueWoul you POST that comedic video? I am always up for weird and obscure.
I am not a machinist, but I LOVE watching machinery and YOUR Rescue videos. My friend watches animals being saved, and calls me "WO" for Wired and Obscure". Oh, I am a woman licensed electrician who takes roads less traveled.
I'll have you know that my great great great grandfather was industrial coolant and as such your omission of it is a great insult to my culture
Hahaha brilliant
Hahaha
I'm just sitting here holding my screwdriver, caressing it...
A total blast and honor to view ... as a retired mechanical engineer, I was totally jazzed by your design considerations and processes. The results are to an extremely high standard and you deserve every bit of respect you are now receiving from your peers and admirers. Cheers my friend!!
I'll only be a little jealous of whoever ends up with screwdriver 0069.
almost 69 likes. Then stop there please.
Aaaah! Who's the one that liked it after 69?! Lol
@@drewsturm486 I took my like away lol. 70. do your duty
Nice.
I'd feel like I'd be getting screwed if I received #69
Thank you for your noble sacrifice, Machining With No Coolant. Mission accomplished, great footage. RIP you heroic tooling. *sniff*
I'm a CNC quality technician for a multi million dollar company and this is my next purchase. I currently own 2 of the previous made wrenches from Hand Tool Rescue. I am amazed at the skill and craftsmanship of this UA-cam channel. I fully endorse this channel under no payment or offer of discount.
This comment was 670. Sorry I exist. Well done 👍🏼
I can't ever forgive this.
I don't own tools, I don't use tools, I have no need for tools, I want your tools.
Buy the tools. You won’t be sorry even if you never use them.
Buy a tool. Maybe two. Trust us, it's not the least bit addictive .....................
I understand completely
I loved this design since I first saw the Ti unit you made for AvE. Thank you for making this available to fans, too.
Fantastic to see it all come together !! Excellent Eric - really smart
Awesome! I just bought one and have a complete set now of all your tools! Thanks so much!
I'm a 100% "will buy" for a smaller, more typical size. I was so, so, SO damn ready to click "buy" until I realized that it's so freaking massive that I would have no use for it other than as a pry bar, which is a shame. I just don't think I've ever come across a one inch slotted screw head in my entire life. But I do regularly need a driver for woodworking screws, i.e. the screws on the handles for hand planes that I restore, where I already use both of the HTR wrenches I own on a regular basis.
But as someone who's bought and uses two of your wrenches already, mark me down as a 100% purchase for at LEAST one of these in a smaller, more "typical" size. I just can't justify the need for such an oversized one because I already have a
And if we get a "silly" mini one, could it be the size of an eyeglasses scewdriver? would be totally awesome to have a driver like this to tighten up my ray bans. The mini adjustable wrench has been so useful in ways I never thought possible.
I bought one purely because it's made to last generations, so I can pass it on to my daughter, who will never use it much like how I'll probably never use it... then she can hand it one to her children who will also never use it... and so on...
Hand plane screwdrivers are like $12 from woodcraft
A guy could use one for the bottom bolt on a Reed vise. That's about the only place I can think of so far.
My wrench just shipped out today!! Super excited to get it and this will be my next purchase!
Great self deprecating humor at 16:27. Amazing job on the redesign!
Just purchased mine. I literally love you bro! Stay up

i love to watch it with no coolent.you can see everything.you rock!
Man, it's such a joy watching industrial lathes and mills.
6:20 sounds like a freight train braking to a halt
Sure does!
Beautiful work.
Looks great!
A moment of silence in remeberance of the endmills who sacrificed their life for this video.
I can't wait to buy one of these. Does the 0069 cost more??? 🤔
LOL, why, of course!!!
He made a lot of 0069 off camera 🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful craftsmanship. I love seeing good CNC work bring done.
Nice
Was wondering that myself.
You always do a fine job on all the stuff you do.
Just ordered the screwdriver kit and the 6 in wrench. Can't wait.
Just ordered the new screwdriver and also got the 3 wrenches, which I forgot to order a long time ago... ooops! Thanks for the content! Look forward to my new hand tools and hopefully you are able to provide the screwdriver in different sizes.
I picked one of these up before Christmas along with the small and medium wrench. I still have to make handles for the screwdriver and heat treat it.
you sir are an artist , I love your videos
The screwdriver is beautiful, definitely a master class!
Love that you included people’s custom handles!
Got mine actually been using it at work love it
Great work!
Looks stunning
Wow, amazing new-old tool!
Beautiful piece of work. The programming must have taken the most effort.
Thanks for sharing.
Love the Handel with the window to see the serial number! Ffing amazing
what a neat collectors item, and/or also a working tool.
Should've used coolant when making the wood handle to upset those you missed by not using coolant 🤣😈
Thumbs up! 👍 especially for the hollow grind!!
Just bought mine! Didn't even wait to see more than a minute of this video before purchasing. I work in a sawmill, so I'll be putting it to the torture test! Can't wait!
I think William Ward is smiling from above =) Great Job!
I found one of the original screwdrivers at a garage sale years ago. The old guy who owned it was a tanker in WW2, he said they were issued to them. He also said that he heard they were leftovers from WW1. I keep it in my shop apron for many uses.
I like how machine is increasing the speed of turning with decreasing of the radius of the work. Thnx TOT for explaining that.
A great tool! Good luck!
Watched the video, couldn't wait to buy one. Can't wait for delivery.
Great job!
Beaautiful.
Love it, I'll be ordering one this weekend.
Dug the video!!! Very neat to see it all done without coolant. Turned out amazing!!!
...looks great, nice work, stay safe..
They're beautiful man.
Man you have some fantastic tools and that's will make you tons of money.
I Want That!
Beautiful job!
How the hell can viewers put a 'dislike' downward thumb on these videos?? This guy is a true craftsman, and his work is unparalleled.
Great craftsmanship👍
Thank you man, excellent job well done
This is one of the best beaters I've ever seen. I just orderer one. Pretty excited for the new toy.
Marvellous design features
noice, looks great! lot of work to build it, but the end result is awesome.
Someone got their driver with a number 69 *chortle*
I'll wait a bit and hunt for one numbered 58008
I had wrench 404 but now I can’t find it. For real.
I will certainly be ordering one to go with my wrench from you!
Yay! I ❤ my ❤ you gave me! 😂
Would love a set of these sized for hand plane maintenance. The hollow ground shape would be perfect to prevent the brass fasteners and chip breaker screw from getting all chowdered up. 👍🏻😃
Just ordered mine along with the standard wrench. Look forward to bashing stuff with this... :)
What an absolute *unit* that is!
I worked in a factory that made screwdrivers. This was really cool!
Another awesome piece Brother. Vedy Noice.
Loved it! Bought one. Now I need to find me some 1-inch screws! :)
Nice !!!!!! 👍👍👍Thanks for sharing
Really good content again - thank you for that!:-) Greetings from Germany!
Cool. But can it actually drive a screw? I feel like a demo was missing.
It actually intimidates the fastener into coming loose even before you start applying force.
@@HandToolRescue "No, please, not that one, I swear I'll come out!"
@@HandToolRescue Wonder if it works for locks too, lol.
@@hdezn26 Only for Masterlocks.
LPL can boost that effect to work on pretty much any lock.
Hah!! I tuned in for a restoration video!! 😂 didnt realize I was in for a manufacturing treat!!
Finally! Here is my stimulus money.
Also a long time fan, follower, fellow hand tool resurrector and a former machinist/programmer turned design engineer..this video really just tickled me in all the wrong places in the right ways. I'm very happy for your achievement. Even though I reached for the feed hold button a few times. The only things I can suggest is SHCS on the milling fixture (those grade 8s are looking sad) and the use of Nutella cutting fluid.
Loved the one with the epoxy inlay, where you could see the serial number 👍🏾💙
Absolutely beautiful! I wish it was a little smaller to be used in more common circumstances. I bought your wrench and love it!
Saw it on AVE, came here and ordered. Fun bit of kit!
Well done 👍
That's more of a chisel than screwdriver
Had to get a wrench, Now I have to get a screw driver. I love the antique designs.
nice screwdrivers, and great video. kool sounds! mmy fav ASMR!!!!:)
Very interesting Large Screwdriver !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like your programs keep it up
Just ordered mine, can't wait to see what number I get. I know the exact handle im making too. Loved the look of that burl handle that one subscriber made. I definitely would love to have a smaller size one in the future for more everyday use. Thats why I'm buying this one now, for my future investment lol.
The lathe part was fine without cooling, but by the time the sparks started flying in the mill, I wanted to scream.
We be burning, not concerning.
@@HandToolRescue LOL!
I really liked the handles that the patreons made, but I especially liked the handle with the little window that shows the number.
Un trabajo excelente,enhorabuena amigo.
I really like the number veiw window brilliant 👏
I expected the chips to lit up and burn down the whole workshop...
8-o
Nice ideas on the customer-made handles, love the one with the window in it to show the stamped number!
;-D
I find the new one much more useful for my daily projects
