In this video I reproduce an antique wrench / spanner that was originally patented in 1879 by Charles Billings. These style wrenches were first used mainly on bicycles, but eventually made their way into the glove compartment of very early cars.
This style wrench was also commonly made by apprentice machinists as part of a test, since multiple skills are needed to produce it.
The wrenches were originally made of "Norway Iron", which is a type of steel that has a slightly higher carbon content than wrought iron. I decided to go with 44W/A36 steel for this recreation, for this reason.
The wrench blanks were cut by a laser out of 1/2in thick steel and then machined to match the originals as close as possible. I thought adding a brass adjuster would make a neat variation on the original, as well.
I had a lot of fun getting this wrench made, but it was also a tremendous amount of work.
I would like to that the patrons on Patreon for supporting this adventure as well as Colonel & Sons Machine Works for their incredible efforts machining these wrenches. You can contact them at yxecnc@gmail.com.

I've never watched this until now, but I really am glad of the effort that went in to making the blanks as nice as I could for you. Was nice to remember good times on the 3030.
Was also nice to see the extreme care and craftsmanship going into finishing them.
Important Technique Information: A forgotten trick (unless you were taught by a grandfather who used these a hundred years ago) for increasing the strength of the wrench: Place a nut of the same size as you are removing into the "opposite-side-jaw", that will transfer much of the force directly to the frame and not through the threaded post. That back overhang is there for important reasons, including the right angle turning that was shown in the video.
Directly from the frame not from threaded...... tech. Point
@@MrSpiritmonger imagine you're trying to remove a jammed 5/8" nut - you tighten up your wrench onto the nut, but before fully tightening it, you place a second spare 5/8" nut in the back slot of the 1879 wrench. This effectively bolsters the head of the wrench against pivoting open, giving you a more stable grip on the stuck nut.
Ohhh... I get it
Awesome, great technical know-how, thanks.
oh wow that's a great trick!
I admire you for not trying to sell these for crazy prices. I just checked the website and was impressed by how affordable they are considering how much work you are putting in them.
Thank you!
Not only are these wrenches affordable, but they offer MANY advantages over a regular adjustable wrench and for nuts under half an inch, I'd reach for this wrench over any other adjustable ANY day. Of course a box wrench/socket is still always better.
Yeah I was expecting easily double that. Excellent work for a very very good price for the amount of labor going into each one
i dont know, buying a good quality wrench of the same size for 15$ or paying almost 75$ for this one shipped. also you can see him filing into his wrench like it was nothing. this prove very low hardness material has a proper tool steel will not be affected by a normal file.
Mine was no where near $75 shipped. Just got it, and love it
As a Software Engineer, starting numbering at 0 warmed my heart. Glad to see someone doing things RIGHT.
i'm guessing that means you have 1 arm, 1 leg, 1 eye, 9 fingers, 9 toes, and 0 brains?
@@manitoba-op4jxbahahaha
I purchased one last year. One of the finest tools I've ever used. And knowing how it's made makes me appreciate it even more.
I gave you a "like" when you showed "hand cranked lasers were used in 1879". I didn't know that, so you learn something new every day. Thanks.
The more you know!
me too first time to see someone using a lazer cutting techonology
Redlock I think he could be right...I distinctly remember my grandmother whispering to my mother refer to her father (a proper British Victorian type chap) as a laser cranker well she pronounced it more like layzi cranker...so I can (possibly) back this up with genuine undocumented family hearsay.
I knew great Granddad was a good man, every one else described him as a layabout!!
Good evening from the UK
Charlie
First thing I thought of was one of those would be a great candidate for a future restore.
That was a joke, lasers weren't invented until 1960.
I asked on another video about this wrench. I'm glad to finally see its origin. I just wish I had one of these before I retired. It would have saved me much grief!
Got mine today, outstanding job! strong, solid, heavy and milled to perfection. Please thank all involved in the build for me.
Came out awesome! They seem like a steal at $35 with all the work that goes into them. The grip test was fantastic. And I dig that you’re keeping the manufacturing true to origin with the laser cutter and CNC mills 👍
Thank you sir!
Wow. I'll be honest and had seen the prices of these weeks ago. I was shocked because I thought you'd sourced them from China and were bumping the price right up - how wrong I was!!
Now, I've just seen this video and I'm impressed. You're using local shops and local jobs to make them and that for me is awesome. Thank you so much for going down the route with better morals
When I get some cash saved up I'll be buying one. Why? Well it's because you've gone about this the right way dude.
Thank you so much for being a decent person.
Thanks a lot! I really wanted it to be make locally and the machinists I am working with share that same passion.
The fact that you're sold out until next year already, shows just how good of a product you have made. Thank you for doing it, and I can't wait to get mine hopefully before 2020!
My bride just gave me this wrench for our 35th. Watch your videos regularly. Great tool, thanks
I can’t believe I just hid in the bathroom at work, where I run CNCs, to watch some other CNC run!😂🤣😂🤣😂
Nice job man!
Hahaha, smooth.
The combination of the wrench and paint brush is genius. Cool project, nice work sir.
1 trillion uses!

Hand tool rescues is the very first restoration channel I ever came across and it led me to channels like tysytube, my mechanics, and LABD restorations and I also am getting into mechanics thanks to hand tool rescues. I'm happy I came across this channel for it opened so many new paths in my life. Thank you hand tool rescues and keep up the good work
Just got two of these wrenches -- they're FANTASTIC. They're not the cheapest, but they support an awesome creator and maker and also THEY FREAKIN RULE. GET ONE.
professional tools are just beautiful
Dude! that is flipping Sweet! I have got to get one!
Thank you!
James, you should get me one, just cause ya love me......well that and I'm poor
Production cost per unit on a monkey wrench with a laser cutter and a CNC is about $12,000.
Thank you for showing us how this wrench is made. wonderful and useful.
Just got mine last week. So far best adjustable I have ever used. Thank you
Great work buddy! I appreciate the extra time and effort you put into it to make it Perfect!
Thank you!
Epic project dude, they turned out very nicely 🙂 I’m looking forward to the AvE torque test!
Thank you! Me too.
Nnnnnnnnggggg....click!
Nice job Son! (I only call you Son on account of how well I know your Mother -AvE) hehe
Cockford Ollie test on King Dick replica!
This is insane. Hands down the best tool restorer on you tube. I watch all of you videos.
Got mine today. Thanks for the awesome handmade wrench. Worth every penny
Like many, I discovered this on AvE's channel. I've never given those old style wrenches a second glance since most I've seen have been abused and better suited as a hammer. Looking at this, the work put into the construction, and its superiority over a standard adjustable wrench, has me thinking. This would be a perfect addition to my 1928 South Bend lathe. There may be a set in my future.
#197 dam these are selling like hot cakes. I love the work put into handcrafting these
Just got mine in the mail. It's beautiful. Thank you.
I thoroughly enjoyed that video. Very happy I got to see this come out
In ~4.0 hours there’s been about 500 sold. Holy smokes.
Can’t wait to get mine!
Crazy!
Dude. I’m so pumped for a revamped, pimped-out wrench. Thanks again for the videos and remaking a cool tool. 👍🏾
Whos here from AvE?
Haywood Jablomie yes, I came right over and subbed:)
I love how he was explaining all of this and said "there's gotta be a video".
How could you not come here after AvE said it was ‘Skookum”?
Well AvE didn't drive me here originally, but he did send me back.

After much anticipation, finally received the wrenches and you did not disappoint. Great job and thank you.
Now waiting on the micro version the the grand-daughter's tool kit.
I plan on ordering one in the near future, probably mid June. Thank you so much for making these available
Woohoo... just bought 2 of them.. cant wait.
Awesome!
instablaster
How cannihve them
Although the $21 in shipping is annoying, I'm excited to receive mine. It's been a great time watching this channel develop and to be able to help HTR grow further is more than enough for me to foot that shipping cost. Keep up the good work! order #00613!
Thank you!
Just received my wrench. It’s great and I look forward to using it for many years. Thank you.
Thank you!
Awesome! Can’t wait to get mine. Would love to see more projects like this in the future. Great job! 👍🏼
It's like watching "How it's made" with out the crappy music.
RedNeckry Channel my favorite show 😸
And without the bad puns
Why did you put that music in my head?
You guys were the first people I ever met that thought that music was Creepy from how it’s made
Beautiful work! The original King Dick "fish" wrench has two additional parts yours does not have: a thrust spring and a washer in a recess in the bottom of the knurled thumb wheel. This keeps the thumb wheel tight against the top of its cutout and prevents the tool from rattling.
true, I took it apart a while back
I was just about to comment the same. I have the original King Dick too and wouldn't be without it.
That was simply amazing! Good job.
Thanks for the video. Amazing amount of work to manufacture them.
So happy these are finally for sale and can be shipped internationally! Available here: www.handtoolrescue.com/products/wrenchymcwrenchface
Ave sent me
Same
Delivery in 2-3 months?? You sending it via carrier pigeon? Or $100 for 10-12 days?? Man I'd love me one but jeez that shipping cost is insane... And before anyone says that's
including his build time. It's from date of dispatch
Me too. AVE
But also came because I have one of these I dug up behind the house that says Hartford, Conn. on it but without the slot and I wondered if this was a copy of the one I have.
If I can figure it out I'll post a photo.
I just came from AvE's vidjay-o reviewing this tool. I gotta say, it's fantastically simple.
I'd like to buy one , Do you sell them in Metric sizes??? ;)
Lasers cutters in 1879 were horse drawn.
Brian Binns before they became steam powered! 😅
+ Brian Binns True, but the horses were hand cranked.
No, they had specially bred and trained dogs running in wheels pulling leather belts to drive the x-y axis tables.
and damnit, all sold out. I should have checked my notifications the day the video was posted. FACK! TABARNAC MERDE!!!
Whelp, be a nice surprise when it shows up sometime next year...
@@chrisis9030 fucking gross man
adam anthoni ford It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it
Amazing job! Love watching all your videos, keep them coming!!
Ordered 2, thank you for offering a unique and useful item. Gifting one to my best man for my wedding. Great videos, I love how the content is done. Don't change a thing. Keep resurrecting the tools!
With all the machining steps and manual adjustments, it's like I'm stealing when I placed an order at that price.
Haha, yeah feel a little guilty pressing the "Add to Cart" button. I guess we can go to Patreon to pay the rest.
Yeah, I went to look at the price and was expecting about $100. I was surprised to see $45.
I'm following you from Algeria and I love your videos
Ya baby my wrrench finally came in, TODAY!! And it was worth the wait. Thank you my friend.
Ordered 2 cant wait to get my hands on them. I really enjoy your videos, keep up the great work!
$35? What a steal would have thought they would be more Thank you awesome video
Hammond Auto LLC same thing with all the machining
Yeah you can see the quality but somehow they managed to keep the price low
Its the shipping thats a killer
Price is $40 now which is still amazing. Quite a lot of hand work goes into making these. And the steel and tools aren't cheap either.
You should try some Damascus ones with alec steele or do an acid rock tumbler finish. A very beautiful piece
That would be cool.
Hand Tool Rescue shoot him a message as popular as u are im sure he would love ro do it
first time i see the old type of wrench like this. Tkank you. Good job.
Picked one up! Love your channel and what you do. Keep up the great work.
I suffer severe seasonal allergies and utilize only Kleenex® Soothing Lotion tissues (with aloe). Has your tool been tested & certified for this unique extraction scenario?
Should be ok.
I’m gonna have to buy an official Hand Tool Rescue one-piece socket set! It’ll be a lot cheaper than going to my local Harbor Freight store and buying the identical laser cutter, lathe etc. and trying to make my own tool.
Great project! I can't believe how little you are asking for them. Video is great as always.
I was just looking the originals up on eBay after watching your bandsaw rescue with Jimmy. I definitely will order two. Thank you so much for making these. They are by far one of the best adjustable wrenches.
Convenient is the key!
It's Strange, to not see you use any Evapo-Rust. It's like Chef John from FoodWishes not using Cayenne pepper.
Received wrench #11294 today in fine shape. It is fabulous!
Thanks so much for doing these.
Just bought 2! Happy to support the channel.
Are these seriously only 35 bucks??? That is amazing!!
Yes! haha. No need to raise the price to be greedy.
WHen seeing all the work going into it I was expecting it to be at least $100.
If I only made 5 of these, they would probably be around $300 each. The tooling/milling cutters alone were $3500...
Very cool, how many watts is that laser? Over 9000?
1.21 gigawatts.
I believe you meant 1.21 JIGAWATTS 😜
😂 on this project, you really did bring the king dick wrench back to the future
I love old tools and this remake is awesome
You’re such a great entertainer, I absolutely love your videos. Good to hear your voice too. You’re an inspiration to many a nerd.
I absolutely love this channel, love the resurrection of an old tool design and the low price, but $26 for shipping? Ouch!
Deronos55 You can thank Canada Post for that.
€30 for me to the UK
Who cares, it's an amazing piece good for a lifetime (or several).
I was all set to order one, but then $23 for shipping :(
I may order one anyway, but it is a bit of sticker shock.
awldune yikes !
Maybe a US distributor could be arranged?
Ditto
A US distributer?? Have you thought that through?
They would have to be shipped to the US for that to happen!!
Shipped in bulk to the US, not individually. Could be workable if there is sufficient demand and a willing partner stateside.
Amazing work. So much goes into these. Very well done!!!
Thank you!
Well done man! Happy to see this come to life!!
Those are really desirable at $35, but Canadian/US shipping of $28 puts it out of reach. Too bad our countries make simple commerce so difficult.
daddynichol52 agreed
much less than a Snap-Off or MAK Toolz and way, waaaaaay cooler. Buy stuff made by humans and you'll always have a story to tell. Can't put a price on that. Plus, he's prob not even making enough profit to pay for this video. Support the Makers!
daddynichol52 Buy it! A year from now you will still have it and you won't care or even remember what you paid.
How can you put a price on art?
If I buy a $20 item from the US I can end up paying an extra $50 for shipping and brokerage fees. If I buy the same thing direct from China I get it for $10 with free shipping and it gets delivered to my door. So much for NAFTA for everyman!
Does it say it's made in Canada on it? I'd rather have that than hand tool rescue on it.
I am thinking about where to put that...
Please put "Made in Canada/Fabrique au Canada" on it!
Been looking forward to this for a while! I just bought one with the steel adjuster even though I really wanted that brass haha one. I can't wait until it arrives!
Outstanding craftsmanship!
Why does the wrench you took apart say "King Dick"?
So excited, I ordered mine before the video even finished!
That is one company that used to make them.
@@HandToolRescue I assume you borrowed their livery for the 18" model. King Dick indeed.
Ordered mine days ago. Good luck to the rest of you. ;-) Can I get mine with King Dick on it? lol
You could always ask King Dick if they have any left over from when they still made them: www.kingdicktools.co.uk/
Glad you finally did these, I ordered two.
it's really incredible, I never thought I would see a tool like this again, I have a similar one that was my grandfather's, my father called the French key because of its shape, he always told me that really this tool had more practicality than a key English, besides having a better footprint than other type keys, thank you very much for that channel, great work!
*My thumb!*
Eric Spanner hands - yay
This is so cool! Definitely picking one up.
Love watching your vids. Saw this and had to have one for me and my dad. Thanks. Next year cant get here fast enough :)
Did you send one to AVE yet?
he did! i just saw the thing on his channel and by an amazing coincidence i recognized it in the thumbnail in my recommendations
That's why I'm here :)
AvE torture tested this fine tool !! I have a 3 axis cnc, but it never occurred to me to age a part like you did !! That takes even more skill !!!! Brilliant editing !!!!
AvE's video brought me here :)
Yeah he did stripped that nut real good lol
Cheater! I was expecting you to make the replica using only another wrench, a screwdriver and some WD-40...
I have failed you!
don't forget some scrap wood to scrape away the crud.
Can't be done without some duck tape too!
I received the wrench....AMAZING and worth the wait! It's beautifully and meticulously crafted!!!!
Thank you!
I'm getting a couple asap! Awesome, so much better then the current wrenches offered today! Thank you
Have Metric?
LOL!
Good one! Lol!
Hi Software
Hahaha hand cranked lazers were used in 1879😂
I wonder how many people fell for this :D
Кто то руками делает ,а кто то языком только молоть может
maybe more history less youtube for you ...
@boguslaw Its not a joke go do your research
Mario Spanna but in all fairness they were horse powered because it would be too tiresome to power it by hand
I LOVE mine. Seriously, my favorite tool!
Awesome craftsmanship!
Exemplary attention to details.
Exquisite addition to any toolbox or shop! :D
Thanx for the howitsmade buddy!
Bought one
Never bought something so fast
What, I ordered mine in May and still waiting...Ken
Kenneth Bartlett when I say bought I mean ordered as well. Still waiting on delivery.
Thank you ....Ken
I'm getting one as gift for my dad.
Whatever thing you do is not a waste of time. Mind body and spirits will appreciate it !!
Have the full set since last year, been stoked with them.
do you have it in metric?
Markus Johansson
Lol
The standard setting if metric, you have to special order for standard

Just got my wrench and it’s already in the tool bag, been a long time watcher subscriber first time commenting ever on a channel. Always enjoy the content keep it up boss!
I was so happy to see a price tag that low. I just placed an order without any second thoughts. Long life to tools and Hand Tool Rescue. Geetings from France !
