Nintendo finally remembers they had Starfy this whole time?
Don't get me wrong, it's wonderful the first three Densetsu no Starfy games have been added to NSO, but I _really_ wish the extra time, money, and effort was put into translating all of the classic games added to NSO that were previously only released in Japan (while having the option to play the original Japanese version).
I don't know how feasible it'd be, but it sure would be amazing. ❤
They did it with Earthbound Zero and the first Fire Emblem game (before Nintendo delisted it for no reason) Nintendo makes really odd decisions.
@@karnovrpg, the reason they had one for EarthBound Zero was because they had a prototype translation since 1990, which they didn't release due to worrying it wouldn't sell well due to the upcoming release of the Super Nintendo (even though Kirby's Adventure released on the NES in 1993 while the SNES was in the US for two years at that time). They didn't officially release that version until 2015 for the Wii-U Virtual Console.

You gotta wonder tho... Why leave the games untranslated !? I can't read Japanese, so that's pretty much impossible for me to understand the context of the game or thr story :/
It is quite cool how they added Japan exclusive games for the NSO GBA app. Although I find it dumb how they don't translate menu heavy or story focused games that are in Japanese for people who don't read it.

Boy, these past handful of NSO batches have contained either fun surprises or genuinely solid games.
Three Starfy games straight from Japan certainly continue that trend. In both ways IMO, but certainly in the fun surprise way.
...Can't say I was expecting this, credit where it's due Nintendo, you did good bringing these over.
Cringe.
Sure glad I totally can read what's going on.
It would be better if I could read the in-game text
I agree.
Yeah, major problem: The text is completely untranslated. So Nintendo really didn’t do a “good job”, they just put the Starfy games on NSO and that’s… it. At least the first Fe game was translated iirc, this wasn’t sadly. :(
Would’ve been better if they remade the whole series in HD with all the bells and whistles, but I still loved the original products as a kid.
Part of me is happy, while another part is still traumatized by the final boss of the DS game. (That part of me being my thumb)
Starfy has returned once again, Especially since he has a cameo in Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and got localized for the first time on Nintendo DS with The Legendary Starfy.
Bringing the Starfy games is great and gives hope for other Nintendo games like Mysterious Murasame Castle and Tomato Kingdom finally getting western releases. However, no localization is a massive deathknell, Nintendo GREATLY underestimates the people who want to play the game and enjoy the story too without needing a Japanese language scholarship
Mysterious Murasame Castle is already on NSO
@@richtersundeen6105Oh, it is? I wasn't aware.
This just leaves For Whom the Frog Bell Tolls to get out of region lockout jail and Marvelous: Another Treasure Island to get put on NSO at all.
@@mariopikaman1imo it would add so much value in actually getting the NSO if Nintendo put the actual effort into translating these titles that they bring from japan for Western NSO subscription users.
It’s unfortunate that there’s a decently handful of titles they’ve crammed into the NSO library where they are only Japanese text.
Quite underwhelming imo, sure it’s great to see the starfy GBA titles release outside of japan but still not localized. 🤷♂️
You realize Nintendo isn't actually handling the emulation, right? It's being managed by an outside company. They're just getting the green light to add games. Outside that, they aren't actually involved.
This is so exciting, we finally have a way to play the earlier Starfy games! I loved playing Starfy on the DS, and it blew my mind when I found out it was the 5th game in the series.
I was thinking about the Starfy games series a few weeks ago and now we have this! Sweet! I'm glad that more players will now be able to try this trilogy. If this is being released outside of Japan, then why is the text still Japanese?
A LOT of NSO games are not translated
It's easier to just toss the original Japanese games as-is than it would be to localize them.
Thankfully you don't _need_ to be fluent in Japanese to enjoy these particular games, but it's kind of a shame people who can't read Japanese won't know the stories.
@@BlueAizu_ I find that using the Google app to translate helps to solve that problem.
@@jesusramirezromo2037 i mean they are a few but in the total is like 10 out of 300
@@BlueAizu_, that's not truly the case with Starfy. Some of the gameplay (especially one level in Starfy 2) is completely hindered by the language barrier due to being very text heavy (which can contain hints) or is based on a word game.
They bring Starfy to the west, BUT NOT MOTHER 3?!!!
They sadly can't handle games with too much text, Mother 3 is part of that
It's still not localized and you can play Mother 3 (in japanese) with a japanese eshop account. It's really simple. Also first party Nintendo games are a lot more cheaper on the japanese eshop, than the USA one.
Apparently that one has more to do with music licensing than anything else for why they can't release it to the west.
Mother 3 will never come, just play the fan translation.

@@Unknown_User174 That's not the issue. Starfy is a game series where dialogue is a lot of the charm. Yeah, the series is definitely fun without reading, but it's very much so a game series designed with reading in mind. This isn't Mario, which has almost no text, or Kirby that only has text in a few places that many don't read. Starfy has a good amount of text and even some menu-ing. Not having an English localization is extremely disappointing for these games. Just Google translating a thing here and there does not cut it.
@@CuantumQ Good point. And well said, too.
@@CuantumQ DeepL would be better than Google Translate since Gigazine, a popular Japanese blog, also ran some tests of DeepL’s Japanese translations and found them to be more accurate than Google Translate. In general, people praise DeepL for having more natural-sounding translations and doing better with local idioms and slang. That is, DeepL is a little better at translating the actual meaning and tone of content, rather than just word-for-word translations that might technically be correct, but still sound a bit awkward or lack context.
But still, maybe a fan translation would be better if there's no English localization in the future.
@@gelgel4823 I mean yeah, DeepL is definitely better than Google Translate, but even then it's not ideal for actual localization use. The process of a proper localization requires the experience of a person who is familiar with both cultures (not just both languages) and knows how to get a similar feeling in the localization that the original intended. A lot of planning to make sure key phrases are consistent and that unique wordplay can be interpretted if possible. You need to be an entire person to properly localize, not just a program that associates things with eachother. Especially if you're trying to keep the charm of character writing instead of just flattening it out into how most people would say a line.
But not translated... whats the point?
The only guess I have is that since these are platformers, and not text heavy RPGs like Mother 3 or Fire Emblem 1-6, Nintendo decided to release the games on the English side anyway because it would be easy enough to understand what to do. They've done similar things for some puzzle games on the NSO already like Puyo Puyo 2, Panel de Pon, and Mario's Picross. (But I agree it's dumb that they don't attempt to translate them anyway)
@@shanegiorgio4713 Yeah I agree. It's a win regardless to be able to easily play these, but for me its meh because I own all the JP starfy games anyway.
