    Another recommendation to degloss most paints is either TSP,or TSP substitute. I'm also a journeyman painter. And thats my go to way of deglossing and cleaning walls, cabinets, industrial areas,etc. I'd personally never take the time to scuff walls with sandpaper.

    • @als1023
      @als1023 11 місяців тому

      Same as you, suprised TSP was not the top of the list. It is meant to degloss paint and remove the finishers, as well as grease , nictotine and other contaminants.
      TSP and then rinse with clean water, both done with a sponge and rubber gloves.
      Easier than sanding and not dust.

    a couple of questions for you, 1) I scraped the popcorn ceiling in a smaller room, came off mostly good. What do you do for like a corner where the paper tape ripped up a little bit on the ceiling part, but not on the wall part? should I rip the tape off and redo on both the wall and ceiling, or can I put some mud behind it and push the paper back onto the wall? 2) also I have a spot where the paper ripped off in tiny little specs, like the size of a ant for each one, but like 20-30 of them within a sq ft or so, its just like little specs that kinda got caught from scraping, any advice there? I am going to repaint the walls and ceiling after, so no worries about that, and I plan on doing a skim coat cause I want a super clean finish. 3) do I need to clean up dust before I do repairs, and do I need to clean up dust before doing a skim coat, and before I paint?

      Grrr, this is happening to me. The stupid popcorn is super heavy at the corners. Also makes it super hard to get smooth. I used some adhesive to spay the lifted tape back down, but that's probably wrong.

    I watched workmen put together an outside wall in our neighborhood. It was a sheet metal wall they covered with stucco to make it look like a concrete wall with stucco. I looked at that and said to myself: "that's going to come off". Sure enough it failed within a couple of weeks. Metal flexes with temperature.
    Same thing with wood or other similar surface. Mudding over it is placing rock on the surface. Any movement of the underlying surface, it is going to crack off.

      The diameter of those steel giant, round, cookie-pan shaped tanks (usually asphault in tanks) that you see in refineries will expand up to 4 inches once the tank is heated up so the asphault is thin enough to flow through pipes. Insulation walls and roofs (installed over/after the plate metal roof) are often added later to help insulate the tank and cut down on heating costs. They have 4 gutter looking channels on the roof but they have nothing to do with draining water they're actually expansion joints that you have to tie the insulation roofing panels to. If the panels were tied to the tank they'd all be ripped apart from the expansion of the tank- which is solid thick steel.

    Great video again from the best kilted drywall man. Question:After sanding with a radius sander on flat - or eggshell paint knock down walls, use a damp rag to remove the dust? Any other way? The radius sander has a microfiber mop cover. Can I just use that dry or is a damp rag better? Sanding a flat paint wall creates a lot of dust. The nice thing is that using a Wen power sanding pool even takes off some of the knock down texture.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  2 роки тому

      Yes you can use the mopping attachment. I’ve got one and it works but you need to shake out the dust every couple minutes is the one issue with that.

    Hey Guy, I have a question about cracking paint. It was caused either from too thick of paint or not let it cure long enough between coats. I've tried sanding and scraping but it doesn't flake off or sand well. I also tried using killz 3 primer that has a shine too it to see if it would hide cracks but was unsuccessful. Could I skim over this and if so what steps should I take? I'm also concerned about recracking. I've even considered paint stripper but was afraid I might cause more damage. This was a popcorn removal project that went well from watching your other videos. Unfortunately I did a bad job on the paint process which has made this so stressful. Would appreciate your input. Thank you in advance!

      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  Рік тому +1

      Plain drywall mud isn’t very good at fixing cracks. If they are cracks because you put the paint on too thick, let it dry for a month and then repaint it properly with two coats of high-quality paint from somewhere like Sherwin Williams.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  Рік тому

      Fastest, big fans in the windows, and the leaf blower, cleanest, vacuum cleaner rated for drywall dust. Cheapest, dust, mops, that you shake out a lot, or even damp mopping, with a big dust mop. Sanding with a vacuum attached. Drywall sander does a pretty good job of removing the dust as you go.

    Watched most of your videos multiple times and have learned so much, but I still have questions. I have 2 projects 1. ba wall; 2 bedroom wall. First, bathroom wall looks to have satin finish. I washed with tsp. I removed old sealant (caulking) where the lower half tiled wall meets the upper painted wall. Left damaged sheetrock where I removed caulking, which I need to hotmud. Should I seal the entire wall with Zinsser 123 before repairing with hotmud? Or should I use an oil based Kiltz primer? (hoping u say water based 123). Second project, I've prepared (opened up) settling cracks in bdr wall (has flat paint) to ready cracks for fibafuse and hotmud. Instead of sanding wall before hotmudding, can I use liquid sandpaper? Then do I need to apply zinsser 123 b4 hotmudding? thanks so much for your help.

      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  Рік тому +3

      I’m not sure what a CMU wall is but unless you’re going over raw drywall, I wouldn’t use topcoat as it doesn’t have as much adhesion to it. Regular all purpose, has better adhesion and if it’s over paint or anything, glossy, sand it with coarse sandpaper first to ensure it can stick to it. Be sure to remove any dust, though.

    I have a wall that when it goes in to the corner it sinks in about 2 inches over a 3 ft span. Can that be floated out even with mud or should I just cut the dry wall out and fur the studs out and put new drywall on top.

    • @paulwatford3197

      Go over it again with the tool, or.. wait a bit until the mud is tacky, then polish and use the small amount of fat in the blade as you scrap fill the bubble voids.

    6:03 You recommend scuffing up especially a glossy surface. What about with Gardz? Sometimes I worry about that when I can feel how slick it can leave some areas. Is that also important to sand or since it is meant for being topped with joint compound is it different?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  Рік тому

      It's meant to be coated without sanding. Here's their description - "When dry, GARDZ may be topcoated with any standard architectural water-based or oil-based primer or topcoat.
      GARDZ is compatible with all types of joint compounds and spackling pastes and any texture or popcorn finish may be applied over it.

      @@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Thank you for the reply. Yes, Zinsser gives those application directions. But I wanted to know what you think, with your experience with Gardz. So that is one glossy finish we don't need to worry about? No need to scuff up with sanding?

    So I've got a question, need some help. So I've got a 1996 clayton 16x80 mobile home with that vynil faced drywall, that has also been painted with what I think is a latex paint. I'm taking out the strips between each sheet of dry wall & mud n tapeing the wall like normal house walls with lots of patches. Now this is not quite half the house more than half the house is getting new dry wall but I've decided to salvage what I can, maybe. The question is what kind of mud do I have to use to tape & patch them old trailer walls with a 10 yr old latex paint job over them. Any help would be appreciated thanks

      You can still find those strips new old stock at the new mobile home dealers or new from suppliers. Mobile home drywall is not the same thickness as stick built house drywall . You can buy those sheets as well still new old stock.

      @@ThatKiltedGuyDIY gotcha. Some rooms the previous homeowners left me have wallpaper borders slapped straight onto the drywall, with tons of layered paint around it.
      I removed some wallpaper last night, and I’m left with exposed drywall and about a 6 layered paint difference between the two, and has a very hash paint line.
      So in order to even that area of my walls, does sanding down the paint line until smooth, then put mud over it to even out the wall thickness sound good?

    • @jazz901
      @jazz901 2 роки тому

      I’m somewhat new, but have watched over a thousand videos on hotmudding/painting/fibafuse etc. Hint: Do NOT use the bucket joint compound; DO use 20 or 45 minute hot mud. I would never paint over wallpaper or hotmud over it. It’s worth the effort to take every bit of wallpaper off, using water and a large sponge. Then sand and wipe wall clean. Get it as smooth as possible. Hint: Apply oil based primer to the entire wall; not water based. There will always be residue glue on the wall from the wallpaper and water will activate it. After sanding any imperfections again, I then applied Zinsser 123 water based primer. Wall now ready for paint without hotmudding. I then removed a border in the bathroom. I again applied Kiltz oil based primer after removing wallpaper and sanding. I then Patched towelbar holes and other damage with hotmud. Sanded again and applied Zinsser water based primer to entire bathroom. It may be an overkill, but it’s nice and smooth for paint. But to answer your question about unevenness, you may have to hotmud the entire wall. Just be sure to seal in that glue with oil based primer first. You might just apply it to the wallpaper border area. Good luck
