I have used mesh tape many times BUT you have to use a setting type compound such as Durabond. I always do the 1st coat with the brown bag which is the strongest . You want to make sure you don't lay it on to thick because it's really hard and doesn't sand well. After you set it with the 1st coat of Durabond you can go ahead and use premix mud with no worries. They really don't tell you on the tape roll that you have to use setting compound which I think is really irresponsible.

Roughing it up is a great idea. Whenever I go over painted surfaces, specifically high gloss I always put on some quikrete bonding agent beforehand and wait for it to get tacky. Never had any mud fall off since then.

Great job Ray, I do the same thing. Love your videos showing the proper way to do things. too many people posting hack videos and passing them off to unknowing diyers as a job well done.

When I'm lazy, I'll use a liquid De-glosser, But sanding is better. Thank You Sir

only time i use mesh is for patchwork, I think anywhere were structural movement could happen from framing members, Mesh is at risk of cracking (seen it first hand by professionals which I had to fix later). Generally wall to wall and floor to ceiling runs is paper tape, I never use mesh on those. Using thinner board doesn't help (more flex in the sheet), as well as wide temperature changes in an unconditioned space (+30 in the summer to -30 winter) can also cause extra cracking (i've found). Even as a DIY Novice I would rather fix a paper tape issue than wrestle with mesh tape. And I pre-filled with propa durabond as well as following Ray's advice.
To any hardcore mesh supporters, do automated tools (bazookas, etc) take mesh tape or paper? And why is that?

It's a shame that Stanley/Black & Decker has killed Porter Cable.
They were once innovators with tools like belt sanders, worm drive saws and routers.
Even under Rockwell and Pentair their tools were professional quality.

If I’m going to skim coat an entire glossy paint wall, or apply a hand trowel texture to it, can I just prime the whole wall first with a water based primer like kilz 2 before I apply the skim coat or mud for a trowel texture?
And do that instead of sanding it?

Thanks for sharing. The hard deposits that collect in sand paper used while poer sanding, can be cleaned up by "sanding a hard rubber stick". Amazon sells them as: Abrasive Cleaning Glue Stick Sanding Belt Band Drum Cleaner Sandpaper Cleaning Eraser for Belt Disc

Are you tearing the mesh tape out before you paper tape the angles? Or cam you tape right over it?

Durabond works. Regular joint compound doesn't, because of the shrinkage.

@@jimurrata6785 apparently didnt work in this case. And I'm currently working om a similar situation. I can tell hot mud was used because its rock hard. At least when paper fails, it's relatively easy to scrape out the old tape and even much of the compound.

Thanks for another helpful video. I guess the owners didn’t “call back” the original installer, right? If it was me, I wouldn’t have called them back either. If they couldn’t do it right the first time, how would the second time be any different? I always hear contractors bragging how they never get “call backs”, but don’t you want a homeowner to trust you enough to call you back for repeat business?

Is it better to sand down the glossy paint, or paint over it with a flat or matte primer? Priming seems almost easier and less messy.

    • @THEDRYWALLDOCTOR1
      @THEDRYWALLDOCTOR1  Рік тому +1

It is, but it still may be necessary to sand the walls to knock out the high spots and ropes.

Yea that is tough it takes a lot of working the mud back and forth. Try using a spray bottle of water to knock down the dry bubbles before you skim.

That may be true. I've rarely seen a joint failure on wall flats or ceiling butt joints. I'm not sure why thats the case.
