    Thank you so much for sharing these educating videos. I was in the process of painting my parents bathroom which had not been touched in 25 years. Unfortunately, they decided to use mobile home wall covering when they built back in 1975 and as a change. The walls were Kiltz with out even cleaning more less preping for texture or loose spots in the vinyl. Which over the years cracked and pealed one , two and in some spots several layers of the wood down to the gypsum. Watching Your videos made it possible for me to complete the project with an almost flawless flush painted surface. My parents are so pleased. I will carry your simple easy to understand and follow knowledge with me for future projects and will share your link for reference on other DYI projects. Thanks Again, Karen Wilson

    A little trick I've learn to show drywall mistakes. I use an LED flashlight, hold it flush against the wall, so the beam is parallel to the wall. You may need to close the blinds. That will show EVERY single defect in the wall. From the wave of the wall, down to a hair that got stuck in the paint. No need to do a first coat, and wait for the sun to be just right.

      @@Soliber fair enough. This method actually saved me from buying a house that would have financially ruined me. It was about 100 years old and next to a lake. The previous owner did a lot of upgrades to make it look really nice. I noticed some discoloration on the brick around the fireplace, and I thought "well, it's a hundred years old, it's probably had a flood before in that time. No big deal." Then I put my light to the wall and aimed down. I saw a horizontal line 3' high in the drywall going around every wall. Which is standard replacement procedure for flood damage. Seeing that, combined with the fact everything else looked recently replaced, I talked to the neighbors and found out that it floods at least once a year there.

    i do high end auto body paint work. so a lot of this stuff is similar but in a different aspects. (helps i was a contractor assistant when i was a teenager for a few years) just being familiar with materials goes a long way. i have to be extremely picky as far as prep work. usually im only dealing with a small area with little room for imperfection... but, what im getting at as you where saying you need to look over very large spaces. as far as i know being picky is important but you need to get the job done. everyone has to find their happy medium. love your vids man keep it up! Im moving into a fixer upper and nothing wrong with a refresh or learning something new while your at it, appreciate what you do!

    So I'm a little confused, is that paint on the walls now or primer? And are you saying that you sand the walls down with the primer on it before you start with the final coats of paint? Or do you sand between coat one and coat two of the paint?

    • @f3arful
      @f3arful 2 роки тому

      Sand everything and inbetween every coat you do. Remember one thing, paint plus sand in every application you ever do. Just use 220 grit so you don't damage it and lightly rust it out.

    So I'm painting a dark green basement with LOTS of imperfections in the drywall. The method I went with was: 1)mudded imperfections 2)sanded entire wall including patches, 3) primed walls completely,4) lightly sanded primed walls, and 5) finally wall paint (2 coats). Am I doing too much? Do I need to sand after priming?

    • @f3arful
      @f3arful 2 роки тому +2

      You sand after priming. You sand inbetween your coats of paint until your final one is on. All 220 grit light rusty sanding your doing the correct steps. Use hotset mud for your patches. Doesnt shrink and is a better product then all purpose. Also doesnt technically need to be primed but always good practice too prime anyways.

    Thanks for your videos and I became a member today.
    After applying PVA primer and doing more repair on finishing, I would like to know if I have to do priming again after the touch-ups with join compound or 45 Easy sanding.

      yes! all patch work need to be sealed with a primer before painting. Cheers!

    Wait I'm confused. After you mud and taped the drywall. Did you put a prime coat on and then a the 1st coat of paint THEN go for touchups and patch work? Can you elaborate on why you prefer brush and roller over a sprayer, not those cheap crappy sprayers but a professional sprayer.

      Yes, primed first and did a check with the light, put on the first coat for wife approval and found more imperfections that were highlighted by the colour when the sun was shining in th room. As someone who paints with a gun for automotive purposes, yes I can see the appeal but aerosolized particles travel everywhere, would need to plastic wrap a couple feet around the perimeter of your ceiling when doing the edges

      I don't spray becasue I am trying to teach a system that anyone can use. spraying is an art form and it takes too much experience to get good at it for folks who are renting tools.

    What grit sandpaper would you recommend for sanding walls before you paint?

      I'm wondering what grit he uses, too...

    • @f3arful
      @f3arful 2 роки тому

      You use your regular grit. Probably 180 if your sanding mud. If your doing your rusty sanding then I use 220 as it just scuffs it up so it increases adhesion and takes any small stuff out. Same grit for inbetween paint/primer

    Hi, we're prepping to pain the walls in this house we just bought with horrible rough paint on the walls. What do you think of using an electric orbital sander rather than the radial sander you have been using? Could I get away with this electric orbital sander in between coats too? or will it be disaster waiting to happen and take out fresh paint.
    (thanks! I've been watching your videos a lot for our RnD - research and destroy)

    Minor source of confusion: So, at 7:55 when he says "You're not looking to put a lot of 'paint' on the wall."... he's still applying "primer" but referring to it as "paint" because primer, technically, is still "paint", right?

    Hmmmmm, before you put your first layer of paint on your wall which has already been painted, what do you do? Do you sand it and then add the first layer of paint?

    quick question: i want to repaint our basement and the walls are painted concrete. the paint is old and falling off and i want to paint the walls. question (1) what is the best orbital sander to remove the old paint and what grit is best for removing paint from painted concrete walls??? question (2) do i have to scrape all of the old paint off the wall or do i have to just sand /scrape the old bubbly paint that are falling off and paint a fresh coat on top the old paint which are still intact??? question (3) after sanding/scraping off the old paint, do we need to wipe down the walls for dust with a damp towel before painting??? (4) last question: how many coatings of paint do i need to do to prevent(best brand of paint???)the concrete wall paint to bubble/fall off???

    Question: can a 90 min mud be used just as easily for this kind of touch ups? Some of the other vids specifically mentioned 45 min mud as well. Thx!

    I'm wondering if you dry mop after tape and mud, wouldn't you then just prime and paint without needing to sand after primer? By skipping the mopping you need to sand bc of the rough surface?
