    Teddy, as mentioned on the comments here, your research, content and presentation is unmatched. I saw the 1803 on my dad’s wrist decades ago. It fit his dress & style. This timepiece has been handed down to me as my dad’s mental & physical abilities have diminished. Although the shiny-ness is nowhere near my taste, I wear this precious metal 18K gold piece on occasions for Dad just to keep it running mechanically and in my memory. I will pass it on to my son upon his maturity. Teddy, thank you for featuring this sentimental piece on your channel.

    My late grandfather owned a 18038 Day-Date since the mid 80s and he switched the fluted bezel with an aftermarket diamond one, as well as applied aftermarket diamonds to the center links of the bracelet (which unfortunately made it tough to service but I’ll get to that in a bit). That watch was eventually gifted to my dad when he and my mom got married in 1990. After my grandfather died of lung cancer in 2014, my dad gave the watch to my mom as a remembrance piece where she kept it and wore it until she eventually died of complications from pancreatic cancer in 2020. Fast forward to now, my dad and I finally sent the watch over to the Rolex service center in Belgium since it hasn’t been given a proper service since then, and because my family has had a strong relationship with that specific service center. The hands, dial and crystal were replaced with modern versions, the movement was also modernized, and the original fluted bezel we kept for the watch was reinstalled. A replacement factory bracelet was also installed, and the entire piece was polished to perfection.
    Now the watch is working perfectly again and it’s in my own possession. Never selling it.

    I own a 1803 just when they introduced the hidden clasp, and I absolutely love the watch. I purchased it thirty years ago and serviced it only once and it still is as accurate as the day I purchased it. The watch looks very blingy being all gold but don't let that fool you the watch is very robust and built like a tank and can take a beating. I wear it all the time even when wearing shorts and a tee and can care less what other people think, the bracelet is as comfortable as it gets and just feels good on the wrist.

    I have the 1803 circa 1973. Mine is a bit more bling as it has a diamond dial. I love wearing the watch, and I will wear it with just about any type of clothing. The watch draws attention usually with quick glances. Setting the day and date is a PIA so I keep it on a winder. I love the pan pie dial. I love how unique it looks. The one change that I would make aesthetically would change the plexi to a sapphire crystal. My understanding is that it can be done, but I have yet to do so as I don't want to ruin the originality and spirit of the model.

    I own one (burl dial, bark links) (and a number of other vintage solid-gold and 2-tone watches. It really does not catch that much attention at ~36mm - you can for sure wear it all the time and not be uncomfortable! Rather, it contributes to your overall appearance a little bit, if you dress appropriately.
    A 41mm with a gold dial might be more ostentatious if you wear it with t-shirts etc.

    • @brucelee9941
      @brucelee9941 4 роки тому +4

      This is the comment I was looking for! Most of these comments are people who don't own one and wish they did so they say it's too flashy, I also own a 36mm 1803 with Bark finish, the bark finish is less flashy more classy and modern looking, not to mention has around 4 more Grams of Gold.

    • @DapperProf
      @DapperProf 4 роки тому +2

      @@brucelee9941 For sure! In my experience, my two-tone Datejust thunderbird with gold tapestry is the most "bling", and attracts the most commentary - something about the steel/gold offset. Bark Day Date is quite stealthy (for a gold bracelet) because of the center link design.

      @@DapperProf This is great I did so much watch movies but honestly all week your communication about watches was much more enjoyable, I had to look up the 2 tone thunderbird It is very beautiful especially in 2 tone with the gorgeous bezel, I own a 16233 Datejust 2 tone 18/SS Black dial factory diamonds, they do have quite a beautiful presence. I also just bought a Omega constellation 396.1069 in Solid 18k Gold I had the SS model and had to get it in Gold, plus it was half the price of the Rolex. Nice talking to you my friend it was a pleasure.... Soran

    I bought mine in 2008 in Rose Gold with the domed bezel. I had the correct 'Waves' dial installed at Rolex (they were popular for a while) in Amsterdam, when on a biz trip. I just had it serviced for the first time!

    I really don’t wear my 41mm presidential, they seem to come in and out of favor,but when they do pop their heads up the watch goes ballistic

    Hey! Great channel! Love your content but i got one question, what's your thoughts on Ingersoll 1892 watches?

  • @jacc88888
    @jacc88888 5 років тому

    Like the size and design of the champagne dial but would only wear it for black tie events (ie once a year!) way to flashy for casual wear and also a muggers magnet.

    I would like to wear it during my next trip back to the US, however, I feel worried walking late night in Oakland, CA alone wearing those stuff.

    Why are there some examples of 18238 with non lumed hands on lumed/tritium dials? Are they after market hands?

    Yo my dad bought one of these in the 80's because of Gordon gekko and he still wears it pretty often

    Once I didn't like them. But they grew on me. I bought a 18238, gold faced, bar hour markers. I like it a lot, less flash than I thought and all the better for it. I usually wear a 40mm or 40mm+ watch, but it wears great at 36mm. I like it a little loose on the wrist, I don't like that normally. But this suits it and it fits well, it doesn't fall off around the outside of the wrist. I don't wear it all the time, it's not that kind of watch. But I'm very pleased with it, more so than I thought I would be. PS I'm not a Rolex fan boy at all.

    My grand father gave me this 1803 a few years ago. Yes it does get noticed and I'm getting weird looks from people time to time, but who cares it's about you enjoying it.

    Love it in White Gold.. Still comes with the heft but a little more subtle rather than yellow gold. If not WG, then the everrose is my backup.
