Hello, I made the romhack in question. The ARG is unfinished because I was 14 and I was making it up as I went along. Why the hack exists: SMWC used to hold annual level design contests where you made a single Mario World level and submitted it to be rated. I participated and my level was rated like 2/10 which pissed me off. So, one evening when I was bored, I purposefully made a bad cryptic romhack because I thought it would be funny to see people's reaction to it. I didn't expect anyone to actually pay close attention to it, I thought people would just play it then forget about it As for the ARG, it was really just made up on the fly, a collage of random scary stuff. I'm not sure where I was going with it but I think I just wanted to keep the spookiness going. IIRC the plot I was going for was that SMW was being used as a medium to tell a spooky story unrelated to Mario (think Petscop) but again, it was just shit I made up on the spot as a teenager, it has no real rhyme or reason, it's just there to be spooky. As I was 14 at the time, it's poorly made and it just contains references to the stuff I happened to be into as a teenager (Homestuck, House MD, Yume Nikki, etc.). It is a little embarassing to see it again almost 15 years after the fact but what can you do. Eventually I stopped trying to make it unsettling and I just uploaded whatever random GIFs I made in my spare time. It ends in the middle of nowhere, because I stopped caring at some point. It didn't occur to me that the Victim 1 blurb had anything to do with the image. It is pure coincidence. I simply lifted it from this video's description, because I found it funny: ua-cam.com/video/eR6rZcKEg8Y/v-deo.html Nice video!
I'm pretty surprised to see the creator himself reach out! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. If you want to talk about your work some more, my door is always open

BD is honestly such an impressive piece of early internet horror media that I think can’t just be boiled down to a creepypasta, and I think paved the way for a lot of other people online into getting into the arg scene. being lumped with slenderman and (god forbid) jeff the killer has probably led to a lot of people either forgetting or never learning that the story was in video form first.

It was the game itself with no mention of its horror aspects, just referring to it as a “weird Mario romhack”. Wouldn’t know the story around it or the image for years
One of my favorite creepypastas that I can't remember the title of was a more obscure one that was more classic than cliché, involving a fellow that (in short) lived on his aunt and uncle's farm, goes into the woods, finds an old abandoned bunker, and gets followed eventually by a demon and has to save his gf with some psychic lady that owned a spooky nic nac shop.
@RandomDrawer_tm yeah, pretty sure it just got lost in the sea of similar stories, so I doubt I'll find it again. Probably isn't as good as I remember it, anyway.
@GribbleGob maybe, it's been so long since I read that creepypasta, and like I said I've looked for it to find it again but I forgot the title so it's possible. I do remember the main character finding a journal with strange scripts in it when he entered the bunker in the story. After that he sensed something was in the bunker and he bolted before it got to him.
Fun Fact : the small tombstone-like doors were a scrapped type of door thst are in the actual files of SMW, and you were intended to be only enterable as mini Mario.🤓 (but this is just a theory. i'm probably wrong)
Hey, just letting you know- icecreamonkeyfan is part of an "ARG"/Unfiction project I made called ChainmailChasers and is not a valid lead on the image. Midnight Krick is probably the best source to go to for the sake of the image search, as he's gone further than anyone else and even contacted Jordan Davis, the band member of Common Man Down who made the ARG and the image. The image did in fact originate in that band promo ARG. From what we know, it was a cropped photoshoot of an Asian woman in black and white zombie makeup in a field with gloved hands touching her face. The weird silver "spikes" on the right side of the image is the glare from these. The only thing done to the image because cropping was increased contrast, which considering how bad GIMP was at the time, resulted in it getting the red colour. Then, he send it to and saved it on a Nokia just to add the compression.
Chainmail Chasers is an ARG? I…am surprised. It does seem to be pretty impressive, but also damn I wonder if anyone’s gonna make a proper series about the origin of creepypasta images bc that’s a topic that fascinates me to no end.
@@axolotlfairy2473 Yup. I'm kind of shocked more people don't know, actually, I tried to make it pretty clearly outlandish as it went on to avoid the misunderstanding as it had begun to genuinely interfere with Lost Media searches, which wasn't my intention. It's made as a labour of love to that sort of thing, after all. I mean, in the fifth video there's a literal living jpg file, but IG most people just saw the MARIO video and assumed it was in good faith. As an aside, the research in the first two videos and the Rake video is entirely legitimate. The Slenderman video specifically actually had new research I did on my own. I really did email that library.

this got randomly recommended to me (well, not random, i watch a lot of video game content already and lately I've been on a creepypasta content binge) and i'm amazed you don't have more subscribers! your content is really well-produced and your script-writing is done in such an engaging way. I've seen videos about M A R I O before, but this is easily the best one I've seen.
Okay so I played the game as you advised and, considering my history with horror games, I expected something to jump at me. You know, jumpscares and stuff. The thing is, as soon as I completed the first castle and pressed A to pass the dialogue, a screen popped up with a weird music and that scared me. I was so surprised that it took me a while to realize this was in fact the my tablet's alarm that I set up. And the music was a calm but a bit gloomy music I choss myself because I found it cool (next time, I choose a happy song ^^') The craziest thing is that the chances of this happening were so thin, it's really crazy that it happened. I could have completed the first castle at any other time, even just ten seconds before, and it wouldn't have scared me that much, since it wouldn't have happened as soon as I pressed A to skip the post-castle dialogue. And I set that alarm 2 days ago. But yesterday I wanted to take a nap and the time of doing what the alarm was supposed to remind me to do was approaching. So instead I did what the alarm was supposed to remind me of before the alarm rang and went to take thay nap. Because of that, I didn't hear the alarm yesterday since my tablet was turned off and I was sleeping. If I did hear the alarm yesterday, it probably wouldn't have surprised me as much as it did today. There really were such incredibly low chances of this happening the way it did, and yet it happened. That's the story of how my alarm scared me while playing this game.
This was my favorite creepypasta/urban legend as a kid, period. Remember reading it around the age of 12-13 and thought it was awesome that the thing was real. Glad to see others acknowledge it.
Even though the creator thinks the pasta itself is bad I still like it. It’s atmospheric, unsettling, and empty. The cryptic messages made on the fly do kinda make it a bit cheesier but in my view, it made the story far more interesting and I thought it was building up to something. The ending was a bit of a stretch but I still found it creepy. Even to this day I still found it to be well made. Even without the Creepypasta attached it’s still unsettling and I wish it got a remake or a new entry by someone else. It’s truly a pioneer for all the Mario pastas of its time, believe me!!
I’m excited to see this picked up again. both because it’s fun, and because I think both the creator and original players deserve some closure on this :’) I’m excited to see if this video (or the follow up you’re making) lead to anything substantial.
In terms of why people are just connecting to close creepypastas from the old days despite people like Goose Boose and Mutahar declaring them as bad, I think it's not just a nostalgia thing, but because there _can_ be something salvaged from it despite bad writing. It _can_ be possible
Am I glad someone's talking about this! I was really into these creepypasta/ARG things as a teen when this particular one was new, and it always bothered me that there never seemed to be a real payoff to it. For its time, it was really damn good.
9:08 "you play the role of Super Mario. The Koopa king known as Bowser. Has kidnapped the beautiful princess Toadstool, and it is your job to save her! This rom hack has six very long levels." Purinsesu tozutouru = princess toadstool Hope this helps you guys
12:48 Victim #1. Eyeballs were unable to be found. The victim was found lying on her carpet. Causes of death unknown, handmarks with unidentifiable fingerprints were found all over the corpse. {That after the first Castle, along with that Image that we all Assume is Victim #1, is really Creepy, but Interesting, I'm really Interested in having this ARG Solved~}
Much appreciated. I find that most videos cover the bare basics, so I wanted to highlight the forum discussions and activity of the author to highlight the kind of environment the game and subsequent story that shaped it.
I remember when I first heard this creepy pasta I remember being so afraid of the image with this creepy pasta, even to this day I can't really look at it without being afraid, silly I know but it's Intresting I suppose
I know this about creepypasta and they deserve there genuine spot on the internet hall of fame rightfully so but youtube poops also are on the same boat for me. Being 10-15, and running into those vids early on UA-cam was an experience wether creepy, funny, or just wtf. I’m 21 and I lowkey miss the old days of UA-cam.
I never knew there was even a M A R I O sequel throughout the years of knowing this creepypasta but it's a shame that it's remain lost as I'm curious how it was like. I think it does bother me that most other videos that discussed about this creepypasta never bring up about the MARIO account or anything else related to the rom hack to slove it. Yes there was that video thst had the same distorted red face but nobody still brought up the account thet had weird audio clips. I assume the images didn't matter all too much. I'm wondering if there's more to the og M A R I O rom hack if you were to process more through it like if it was normal SMW. Likely not but I have been curious about that for a long time by now.
I don’t like to look at this story as something happening within the world of Mario itself, but instead a serial killer making ROM hacks about the murders he has committed, and how he fears going to hell for what he has done. It makes the story much more haunting.
Really glad someone finally made a video mentioning the uploaders profile, I remember scouring it as a kid and finding the hello audio. It scared me senseless when I heard it. I had no idea what ARGs were back then lol
I've just started the video but i wanted to say; you get me! I adore creepypastas about haunted copies of childhood games, lost episodes and supposed dark secrets of disneys. I'm not in the fandom as much anymore, though creepypastas have lead me to enjoy args and projects like amanda the adventurer. I miss the days where creepypasta were mostly stories that to my childhood brain were plausible. I respect that traditional written creepypastas are now mostly known as well written, clearly fictional internet horror stories, but i do miss the good ole days of some 12 year old writing about their favourite pokemon covered in hyperrealistic blood eating another pokemon and similar over the top and silly premises.
I really love the vibe of this channel, your voice delivery coupled with your great choices of creepy ambient music just tickle my head in the right places. It's like I'm hearing L talk about creepypasta...
The text file got me thinking. What if you tried to open the mp3s with Notepad? I know from other ARGs it's possible to find secret messages in pictures opened with Notepad but I wonder if it'd work with audio files.
That's not saying much. Sonic.exe has literally never been good. It is the worst creepypasta. Mario never had a true equivalent, and that's frankly a good thing. Never until the whole Mario 64 is personalized thing took off, at least. And I'm on board with it, it's a pretty interesting idea. The one about Mario 64, I mean. And even though such a sophisticated A.I could not possibly be fit into an N64 cartridge, I'm kinda just afraid that it'll become a real thing one day. A.I has come QUITE far enough, we can stop now! Like, I'm worried that a robot apocalypse could be a real possibility. Nevertheless, I kinda went on a tangent there for something that didn't really warrant it.
Always love scrolling through youtube and occasioanlly having childhood trauma of that image scaring the fuck out of me when I watched Creepy Gaming, lmao.

"you play the role of Super Mario. The Koopa king known as Bowser. Has kidnapped the beautiful princess Toadstool, and it is your job to save her! This rom hack has six very long levels."
Purinsesu tozutouru = princess toadstool
Hope this helps you guys

Victim #1. Eyeballs were unable to be found. The victim was found lying on her carpet. Causes of death unknown, handmarks with unidentifiable fingerprints were found all over the corpse.
{That after the first Castle, along with that Image that we all Assume is Victim #1, is really Creepy, but Interesting, I'm really Interested in having this ARG Solved~}
gosh this kind of comfy/cozy video style about spooky things brings me back man.
good shit dude fr keep it up 👍
wow this video was alot more informative then most videos about this certain pasta, nice job!
I think the image is meant to be of Peach, maybe after Mario killed her.
>watch video
>author unironically says "jif"
>day ruined
FORREALLY
22:07 hearing homestuck namedropped felt like a punch in the snout
MAMA MIAAAAA
There was a video on UA-cam of a user that hacked the romhack (irony) to go past the black screen and its just the normal game.
@@robertoradar1754 where can I see that? I know it's not really that interesting but it's still something.
Literally one of the most underrated channel on this platform
8:23 is where they start to talk about the game
7:12 "legally I cant say " *continues to say
I am suprised that the godzilla creepypasta was not mentioned cause that creepypasta is one of the best
You mean still the best?
@@Crackedcripple 1973
That image still haunts my brain
I really love the vibe of this channel, your voice delivery coupled with your great choices of creepy ambient music just tickle my head in the right places. It's like I'm hearing L talk about creepypasta...
huh, so apparently this explains why I've been having a few people ask me about super mario ultimatum recently and where to find it
The second rom works! I found Victim #2!
Theres a second victim ?
@@arielruh7773 At least watch the rest of the video lol
oh man I think I found a channel for me! the intro pulled me right in because I also have been a huge fan of all sorts of creepypastas
Squidwards suicide is 10/10 still can't believe they acknowledged it in canon lmao
The text file got me thinking. What if you tried to open the mp3s with Notepad? I know from other ARGs it's possible to find secret messages in pictures opened with Notepad but I wonder if it'd work with audio files.
The image usually creeps me out, but when it's colored blue instead, I don't get that feeling.
Scared myself from the reversed Audio 😭
Whoa! Starting off with a menu sound from Ratchet and Clank? You had my interest. Now you have my attention
The hello reversed things sounds like something sounding out hello I am Mario aaaa
[stares at screen] am I SUPPOSED to not hear anything when the mp3s are playing?
Yeah, you aren't. Apparently in reverse it says stuff.
@@180fuckalotseveneleven3 No I noticed that it's just weird having like over a minute of dead air.
@@TactlessC ig yeah
Regardless of oppositions, I have to say that MARIO is more better story than Sonic.exe
@@hoovy5147the creator of sonic exe was hella toxic
I remember Muta covered playing the romhack😊
Always love scrolling through youtube and occasioanlly having childhood trauma of that image scaring the fuck out of me when I watched Creepy Gaming, lmao.
I’d see it every time I close my eyes 💀
22:06 OH MY GOD I CANT ESCAPE HOMESTUCK LMAO
this is a really good video btw i just thought this was funny
We're making it out of the hood with this one.
Someone called levelengine actual made a gameplay video of Super Mario Ultimatum 9 years ago.
Edit: I contacted the guy to see if he could share a copy of the Super Mario Ultimatum rom and he actually did sent me one via google drive.
Bump
@heypeterReal
This is great! Glad the Algorithm recommended you!
I just can't get enough of spooky stuff like this, haha.
Found this on my reccomended the video so far is amazing hope to see more!
You are too underrated for working this hard for a video
3:53 I HATE modern mass produced ‘horror’ content like ‘The Backrooms.’
This is a good Mario creepypasta. But imo I'll always like the coronation day creepypasta better.
I love the Yume 2kki music…
Mario: My insanity is failing me edition
I really did not expect osu!'s Champion above Champions, -GN 19:00, to make an appearance in a decades old Nintendo Creepypasta/ARG analysis Video.
But here we are. It's a small world.
Bro when I saw that pfp and the name -GN I was like holy shit
@@Sikonari I was like: yeah, maybe it's someone else. There's no way the -GN was around on that forum back then. But then I saw that he also came from Norway and I was baffled.
Very cool to randomly see osu! people outside of the the community!
Super Mario ARG, I wouldn't play if you asked me!
the face at the thumbnail haunted me for 3 days when i was a kid 😭
Great content!
I'm all into mysterious and creepy content, while I'm not really a "solver" (I mean, I usually learn about these interesting mysteries years after they were discovered or even debunked) I really like hearing about them, video format was on point and your narration was great, keep it up man! here's a new sub
This was my favorite mario creepypasta
This takes me back to middle/high school
As a great plumber said, “ 0OoOh, very scary! “
I cant believe this video made me realize that creepypasta meant creepy copypasta
Cool topic! I mentioned superhero’s in another comment and I think it would be a good series to come back to, but you can clearly cover anything well!
24:20 Aladdin? Okay, I cannot take this seriously anymore. 😆
does he know Amanda the adventurer isnt a creepy pasta
I got a Sonic ad for this.
I knew the MARIO creepypasta was actually a person posting in a thread about a weird rom but I never knew it was an ARG
It's interesting cause I thought I heard somewhere that Adam & the rom's creator eventually met
I wonder how things would have gone if this continued & what was on the now lost rom hack
This whole ROM hack after hearing the second audio feels like a whole meme
bruh 8 years later and that picture still haunts me
i looked at the thumbnail thinking it was about an unsolved murder case, then i read the title and realized it was a mario ARG
"legally i cannot tell you" 5 seconds later: "SMW Central is-"
WOAH THAT'S A SCARILY BASED AMOUNT OF 2KKI MUSIC WHO ARE YOU
Bru, I was trying to hear hello.mp3, and I turned it to max volume and then got jumpscared by the reversed version 💀
i learned of red mist when i was like 8 or 7 and i remember being so frightened from it
Why I think I already saw this video on my feed before?
I swear I remember seeing someone playing the second game. But I can’t really remember much.
I never forgot about this one, it was one of my favorites
Cool video never knew there was a second game
I didn’t know they turned Chris Pratt into a Creepypasta
Peter: Go play it
Me: huh!? Hell no
whens the calamity trigger video peter? the clock is ticking
🤫
bruh even after years this still creeps me the fuck out lol and im watching it in broad daylight but i feel an eerie feeling watching you play the game and hearing everything again lmao
childhood, literally
OH MY GOODNESS THE INTRO IS 8 MINUTES LONG THAT IS REGULAR VIDEO LENGTH MY GOODNESS
