My friends Jeff Stacey and Jeffrey Pratt Gordon made the Bobby Keys documentary “Every Night’s A Saturday Night”. My favorite story - Bobby was about 12 years old in Lubbock, TX and one night he heard music outside and crawled out of his bedroom window onto the roof of the front porch. He could see a band playing on the back of a flatbed truck at the county fair. It was Buddy Holly.
wow -- i had no idea he was the guy from georgia satellites. didn't they have a video where a shirtless guy was singing in the back of a pick up truck ? He had long hair and he was thin. Is this him.? i think the satellites were a great alternative to the crap that became known as "the 80s music' - jmho -- don't take it personally, please. THANKS1
Bobby joined The Joe Ely Band in Austin after his time was up in the Stones. His playing on Lord of the Highway, Dig All Night, and Live From Liberty Lunch albums is as good as it gets. Check it out.
I had the great pleasure to see Dan Baird and Bobby Keys in Cleveland what a great show. People talk about how Mick Taylor changed the Stones sound but I always say it was Bobby Keys that did it. The horns of Jim Price and Bobby Keys on Exile on Main Street were like the face of God. Thanks for the videos Otis they are awesome, but as a fan of Keys this one stands alone....May God continue to bless you!!!
Bobby Keys was one of two of the most memorable Sax players of my lifetime. The other was Don Markham.. .who played for Merle Haggard for almost 40 years. And who also played in G. Which made him especially unique. Bobby's solo on "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", made me pull my car to the side of the road, stop, and listen. What a sound! Peace.
Bobby was from Slaton, Texas which is just outside Lubbock, also home to Buddy Holly. The documentary 'Every Night's A Saturday Night: The Bobby Keys Story' is great! My friend Rob Weiner appears in the doc.
Dan Baird tells great stories. He has a colorful way of telling them and really enjoys himself. That makes the stories even better in my opinion. You need an enthusiastic storyteller. Dan Baird is the guy. Bobby Keyes comes alive in these most recent stories from Dan and Otis Gibbs.
Hands down the best rock sax player ever! And Dan Baird is always a great interview. I always heard though that Jagger fired Bobby Keys from a tour (1973 I think?) because Bobby missed a gig - when he took a bath in dom perignon with a groupie or two.
There was a film in the late seventies called "Cocksucker Blues" that was like a home movie of a Rolling Stones tour in the late 60's, back in the Yaa Yas's days. Bobby was in the movie, he was having a good time.
yeah, the Dom Perignon story is what Keith wrote about in his book. Perhaps it was just the opportunity Mick needed to justify splitting those two up as it was likely going to end badly for one or both of them? Bobby Keys was one of a kind!
Otis please pass on to Dan that he was a huge influence to me as a kid wanting to play guitar. I send my sympathies on the loss of his lovely wife! Thanks for sharing these stories! ❤
Wow, does this video bring back a Bobby Keys memory of a New Years Eve in Lubbock, Texas, long time ago. Joe Ely and Band was performing in a long gone country bar on the South Loop. I was invited to play "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight on my Highland Bagpipes. I met this saxophone player in the Green Room who was interested in the reeds I was using. While we were both warming up and for fun to see who was the loudest, we had a good time. Bobby gave the Pipes a blow and actually got it going, I played the chanter while he blew the pipe. As I recall Bobby just happened to be in town visiting his family in Slaton, Texas, located just southeast of Lubbock where he was born and reared.
I did not know Bobby Keys played the sax on The Wonderer. That's cool. I'vE worked for DION (guitar tech) for many years, and his touring sax player has always been Arno Hecht, who also toured with the Rolling Stones, and is probably very aware of the part Bobby Keys played on that song. I'm going to bring it up next time I see Arno. Thanks as always for this cool history.
I saw Dan Baird at the Southgate House in Newport, KY. I am almost positive that Keef and Bobby in Texas during the Stones First US tour in 1964. Bobby also played with Buddy Holly.
This was edited by me . 1st Bobby Keys was so important glad I saw him with The Stones. 'On my edit' I knew what I meant but didn't like how I wrote it ! I love hearing Dan's stories of the great performers he worked with over the years. But my fav story is of his Esquire that was Marriotts how he played it all night.. Knowing the songs it inspired it must a had a vibe before Dan put his own DNA vibe on it.
One of my greatest memories. AmericanaFest a few years ago I was hanging out with my friend Ian McLagan. He was showcasing at The Basement, then after his show, we headed off to see Bobby's showcase, I believe it was at 3rd & Lindsey. Miss them both dearly.
My favorite story about Keith and Bobby is the one where they’d stolen the touring doctor’s med bag and were caught on a bathroom floor wondering “I wonder what this pill does. Let’s take some and find out”. 🤣
Jim Price was the other Stones trumpet guy. When I was 22 or so Bobby Keys and Ivan Neville partied me out , i was a young kid in a crappy cover band ,he treated me so graciously and like a rock star and it really boosted my esteem as a player . I will say the man could PARTY lol. This is a great interview , I also forged a friendship with Rick Richards , Dans old buddy lol Rock in Peace

Great, great episode! I'd love to hear anything Dan would share about Steve Marriott. Didn't the Satellites try to work with him at one time? Loved Baird's stories. I saw Keyes four different times. The GOAT. Thx.......
I was lucky enough to see Steve Marriott play in a club in S. Carolina in the 80s. My friend didn't know what to expect. They couldn't understand why I was so excited to see him. When this tiny , scruffy little guy came out with a guitar almost larger than himself, they looked at me like ' what in the world is this?' Then he began to sing and their eyes bugged out and jaws dropped
Between Bobby Keys, Mancini's Pink Panther theme, the Waltz in A (SNL closer), and Foreigner's URGENT, I decided to start my musical journey with saxophone when I was 12. (1982). This all led me to trumpet (Mangione) piano (Charles, Joel) harmonica, guitar (Beatles, SRV, Crowes, Unplugged craze). All books of a bible and prophets to me. Every Day is Saturday Night is awesome 💥💥
I just watched it, what a great documentary
Watching Keys n Richards in "Cocksucker Blues" toss that TV from their room ten stories up is legend.
I saw that movie at the Fox Venice theatre in the late 70's, been wanting to see it again but it disappeared.
Dan’s storytelling and poetry of speech is top notch. More Dan, please!
I've always been grateful to Dan Baird and Georgia Satellites for almost single-handedly saving us from synth-pop in 1986.
Seen them many a night at Hedgens in Buckhead, ended up sleeping in the back parking lot in my van after the show.
Well put. 😊
