My sister worked for Petty a couple of times doing logistics and said that he was as well read and intelligent as anyone she had ever met, and she dated scientists.
My friend Mr Dan!! Every time I get to watch Tennessee Football , I just see Dan cheering them on with a bowl of Chips and Dips and CO COLA!!!!!! Miss you old bean.
Hi Otis, saw Petty and Dylan at the Pacific Amphitheatre. Bob famously "forgot how to sing". I believe it. I stared at Campbell's blonde Tele. Made the jump from bass/singer to guitar/singer. I was 15 in 1985. Worked all summer and couldn't afford a Fender. Big lessons.
Big Tom Petty fan here. We were watching the NY Mets on TV and there was a rain delay in the game. Turned on New York’s best radio rock station at the time, WNEW, just in time to hear the DJ say “…so I’ll take the first three callers for tickets”. Picked up the phone on the arm of the couch and dialed. The guy who picked up said “you’re caller number three. You’re a winner”. I had to ask what I had won, and it was tickets for the tour Dan’s talking about here. They called it the Rock and Roll Caravan tour, 1987 in Madison Square Garden, 7th row center. Great show. We were dancing in the aisle. When Tom passed it was like losing a good friend. Thanks for the good memory Otis and Dan.
I have sirius XM radio in my car. I crazy glued all the buttons so no one can ever change it from Tom Petty Radio. THAT is my level of appreciation for his music lol.
I was driving home from work when I heard Tom Petty passed away and I cried all the way home. Normally, I can hold it together, but Tom was dear to my heart. I sure miss him.
I saw TomPetty and the Heartbreakers 40 th anniversary tour. Center stage row 5. Both shows in StLouis and KC. The best rock in roll band ever .❤️TomPetty his music plays every day every where from the shop radio to in the grocery store his music lives. RIP TomPetty greatest ever
Nov 10, 1988 - Opening for the Satellites, having Rick and Dan watch your soundcheck... talk about "meeting your heroes".. one of the best days of my life. Thanks Dan! Otis... love the channel! SUBBED!
I saw Tom play 'Keep Your hands To Yourself', I saw Dan play 'American Girl'. I've been lucky. Georgia Satellites were a great live band, and 'In The land of Salvation & Sin' is up there with Wildflowers.
Never got to see Dan live until 2019, and I was up front, 5' away from him. There was almost nobody there, and I'd had a few shots and beers, so I yelled out a request for 'Dixie Beauderaunt'. He just grinned as he was tuning, and said "You notice there isn't a set list up here". Talked to him a little after the show, and still regret not thinking to get the show poster signed.
I always have to tell this story. I’d be telling it if they never had a hit. My gf, now wife, and I saw The Satellites (no Georgia yet) on a Tuesday night at the Moonshadow Saloon in 1982. Most of the night there were only four people there. They played their asses for four sets as if they were playing for 40,000!! It was one of the greatest rock and roll experiences of my life. I told the story a million times and then they blew up with their hit and I was proud as hell of them
Great stories,so believable Dan Baird.I'm the ghostwriter from 1987 who also wanted Roy Orbison's comeback.Trav Wilburys sealed the deal.I ghosted a ton of songs to Orby,Petty,George...whole albums, since I loved those guys and grew up listening to them, part of my soul.Even one for McGuinn, called Back from Rio. Jealousy of their great talents was a big motivator for me.
I was put on fentanyl patches for a legitimate injury and that shit grabs a hold of you with a devil's grip. No matter the character, strength, or intellect of the host, it will possess you and affect your decision making. I turned blue on two occasions before I said 'no mas' and cold turkeyed it. It took a lot from me. But I kept my life. Prince and Tom Petty, as well as both being absolutely worthy of the entirely overused term 'Musical Genius ', were also two of the last people you, if you had any insight into the men themselves, would ever expect to be drug casualties. Users, perhaps, (sorry, Tom❤️), but never would you have expected that end for either man. And we thought Heroin was dangerous.
Speaking of toasted, when I saw,the Satellites, with the Scorchers, the Dude that played Oliver from the Brady bunch, was standing next to me,I got him blasted, and he rocked out with an illegal smile....good times.
Thank you Otis & Dan. I loved the toasted smile. I have 1 huge regret in my life. I never got to see Tom & the Heartbreakers play. When I first fell in love with them my mom wouldn’t allow me to go to concerts. Then I was taking care of my Grandma . Then I had kids no money for concerts. Once my kids got older I took care of my mom for 20 years. My mom passed away Feb of 2017. Then Tom passed in Oct. the worse year of my life. My time had run out to ever see them.
Very similar reasons why I never saw them in person, though they were always my favourite. I’m comforted by all the UA-cam concert videos. I tell myself it’s just like being there, even though I know it’s not. But you can watch them over and over - all different songs and time periods - and it’s sort of like having a front row seat each time! I just love Tom’s music and wish he was still here.
Great story, greater loss. I rarely have experienced en masse grief but you know it when it happens. My first was Elvis.....a strange experience as a young kid, then John, then George(took that one hard).... but then losing Prince and Tom was such a bitter pill. Especially Tom. He sat in that rarified air, and he seemed like an older brother showing me the way as I was growing up. He he was always there despite all the noise. His songs were solid, no matter the decade. WHen I worked at the record store in my teens, my musical taste were transforming at an unbelievable clip, but like an anchor I listened to his songs without prejudice as I knew they were solid in the tradition in great song writing. To hear that he had the Replacements on tour with him, showed me that he was listening also. He was one of us, he was just dialed into the zeitgeist.
Thanx for sharing, really. I'm a HUGE Tom Petty's fan and Dan told me the "Let it bleed jam" story once, while touring in France with the Dusters. Precious memory, indeed.
First time I got to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers it was as Bob Dylan's back up band on the Dylan and Dead tour the Dead opened. Last time was at Lockn' Festival. Otis...Dan Baird is a treasure...keep mining.
Truly talented people…when they pass on way too early.. get “sainted” by those who knew them… I believe that in the case of Tom Petty,it’s altogether warranted… I love everything that he wrote, played and stood for.. RIP,Tom Petty..❤️
I got in my car tom petty song then another by the fourth song i know thats not good, legend before he passed not everyone has that said about them, been discovering mudcrutch latley good stuff
Was Lucky enough to see Tom Petty live. First show was in Lexington Kentucky Jackson Brown opened still my all time favorite concert. Wish I could have seen The Georgia Satellites open for Tom sounds like a hell of a show. Thank you for sharing these great stories Otis!
I saw him several times. I always looked forward to the Heartbreakers covers of classic rock songs. One year at Verizon (formerly Deer Creek) in Noblesville, it rained so hard the crowd ended up soaked to the skin. I think Tom felt sorry for us and ended the concert a little early.
I saw this 1987 tour with Del Fuegos at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Heaven. Then I saw Tom/Heartbreakers with Jackson Browne opening at a tennis arena in Indian Wells CA in 2006. Stevie Nicks popped out to sing lead on “American Girl” and the “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” duet. People trickled in during Jackson’s set. Many missed him completely.
Great to hear more of the inside story. I was shocked to hear that he had passed when it happened. I always thought he would be around long after most of the classic rockers were long gone.
"it shows off the first record.... which is all we got" . that takes balls to say.... man definitely doesnt have an ego might go buy an album of their.... gave him a DOLLAR!!!
Thank you Otis for another great video! I saw Tom Petty's first tour in Seattle and my youngest son Geoff ( guitar/bass in my band) saw his last show in Seattle. We have both bonded over our unique Petty experiences and it has made our band(MirrorImage) so much better for it.
Saw Tom Petty a few times. The last time was a few shows before his passing in Seattle with the lumineers. But I did like the Georgia satellites a lot. Thanks Otis.
Thank you, Dan and Otis. I really love these anecdotes. Real and not media-polished (but awesome job with recording, etc.). Tom was a bit of a tragic figure, too -- like so many great artists. I saw him in the 80's and I think he had the performer in him going full-tilt back then.
Loved Toms music, all the way back to the K-MET,days when they started playing Need to know, and I gotta tell you, when he,died,I cried.End of story, thanks guys another great one.

You by yourself, and with the Satellites, are some of my favorite music. You could sing the menu at Denny's I would buy it. You are definition of badassery.
Thanks so much for your music and your dedication Dan and really appreciate you hooking up with Otis and giving us your perspective and the lowdown on your time with Tom and the Heartbreakers both such a big part of my life that has hasn't Otis become and really appreciate your input man and love you a lot. Peace
I couldn't agree more!! For someone who was in high school in the latter part of the 80's the Satellites were a staple of jam-boxes and pioneer car stereos!!
Yeah watched some live stuff on UA-cam after the last time I watched this guy, they were rockin', I can remember when Keep your hands to yourself came out.
Thinking back to the '80s and Georgia Satellites self titled debut. I remember thinking that this band just saved rock and roll. That is who Dan Baird is to me. Special place! This was one awesome recollection. Thoughtful and fun. 'Something in the Air' is a wicked TPATH cover but to be a fly on the wall when they were jamming 'Let it Bleed' between the bands...WOW! Maybe Dan could get the Harshed Mellows back together? Thanks as always Otis!
Being an 11 year old kid & seein' on my Mom & Dad's television set a Rock Band jammin' on a flatbed truck threw my developing Mind into a tornado of lighting, thunder, & electric guitar.
This is really great stuff you are putting out: It gives me a great sense of the real person in the artists we so much enjoy, and always respectful. Thanks so much.
I got to see that tour. Watch the Georgia satellites Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the Dell Fuegos at Pineknob in Michigan. It was a fantastic show. Let me tell you all three of those bands rocked out hard.

Sweet…totally. 😊

Tom Petty the Bard of America....... Great to hear Dan talkin about him
Great stories here
Wow. Thank you both.

I saw this tour in Jacksonville Fla. in July 87
I saw all 3 bands on this tour, July 25, 1987. West Palm Beach Auditorium, WPB, FL. Good show!

Every word Dan spoke here was just beautiful. What an awesome perspective on a rock n' roll legend. As a lifelong Petty fan, I completely empathize.
Thanks, Reuben!
Dan's always so humble and speaks so highly of others that he admires. Well Dan, you're in the same boat for many of us.
Indeed!!
Damn Skippy

If you like the Satellites, check out Baird's solo album "Buffalo Nickel". It's like having another Satellites album.
Awesome memories!! R.I.P Tom petty
I saw this tour in Cleveland awesome
I saw the The Georgia Satellites open for Reo Speedwagon when I was in Junior High. Long time ago but I remember them rocking pretty good.
I love dan, he's so cool , could talk to him for days
Damnit, Dan Baird...these Tom Petty stories are so good they make me miss him even more.
Speaking of toasted, when I saw,the Satellites, with the Scorchers, the Dude that played Oliver from the Brady bunch, was standing next to me,I got him blasted, and he rocked out with an illegal smile....good times.
That's tremendous! : )
here's a real dude....has a good head on his shoulders...hope he uses it
Thanks for being YOU Otis...
Your the Coolest..!!
Thank you!
Deadhead too! Why am I not surprised?lol.
Thank you Otis & Dan. I loved the toasted smile.

Ya that would be so cool man....hail hail rocknroll hearts ..... and heartbreakers...rip
Dan seems like such a thoughtful and articulate guy. I really enjoy his stories. Thanks for bringing them to us, Otis.
Thanks, Chris!
He's a good egg
The perfect rock and roller to tell a story. I hung out with Dan in Wapokonetta, Ohio years back, he was a true "buddy."
thanks Otis and Dan--------------great insight and bit sad.
Georgia satellites was a kick ass band
Cool interview.. still miss Tom Petty. I want that t-shirt :)

This is proof that all the coolest people are total nerds.
The Mark Twain comment is definitely appropriate about Tom.
One of my guitar heros. Luv ya Dan and thank you Otis. 💗 That's a Southern rock pioneer in your midst.
I enjoyed Dan’s stories immensely. Thanks.
Well toasted smile alright...
Truly talented people…when they pass on way too early.. get “sainted” by those who knew them… I believe that in the case of Tom Petty,it’s altogether warranted… I love everything that he wrote, played and stood for.. RIP,Tom Petty..❤️
Awesome interview about Tom and the HBs. I loved the Georgia Satellites and Dan's I Love You Period album! Such a talent.
I got in my car tom petty song then another by the fourth song i know thats not good, legend before he passed not everyone has that said about them, been discovering mudcrutch latley good stuff
Did you ever see Tom Petty live? Where was it and when? Extra credit if The Georgia Satellites opened up!
Was Lucky enough to see Tom Petty live. First show was in Lexington Kentucky Jackson Brown opened still my all time favorite concert. Wish I could have seen The Georgia Satellites open for Tom sounds like a hell of a show. Thank you for sharing these great stories Otis!
Savannah Civic center ..81 I think
I saw him several times. I always looked forward to the Heartbreakers covers of classic rock songs. One year at Verizon (formerly Deer Creek) in Noblesville, it rained so hard the crowd ended up soaked to the skin. I think Tom felt sorry for us and ended the concert a little early.
Saw that tour at Madison Square Garden. Del Fuegos, Georgia Satellites, then Petty.
I think it was called the Rock n Roll Caravan

Search UA-cam for "Going To See Petty". It's my tribute to Tom and the band.
"it shows off the first record.... which is all we got"
.

might go buy an album of their.... gave him a DOLLAR!!!
I really enjoyed this interview Ottis and it was great to hear Tom was such a great.
Thank you, Norman!

Dan Baird is my Tom Petty ☺️
Thank you, Dan and Otis. I really love these anecdotes. Real and not media-polished (but awesome job with recording, etc.). Tom was a bit of a tragic figure, too -- like so many great artists. I saw him in the 80's and I think he had the performer in him going full-tilt back then.
Thank you, John!
Thanks for the Tom memories, Dan! More Chefs, please!
Excellent as usual Otis. Keep up the fine work. I sure miss Tom Petty but listen to his greatest hits double CD weekly. BRUCE
Thanks, Sunny!
Loved Toms music, all the way back to the K-MET,days when they started playing Need to know, and I gotta tell you, when he,died,I cried.End of story, thanks guys another great one.
Great another Dan Baird tale.
After the shock of hearing Tom had passed I remember feeling a little cheated because I wanted more from him and I know he had more music to give…
Good analogy, he was the Mark Twain of American songwriters. Who wrote better or more?
Thanks for bringing Dan for his insights ....... it's why I follow you Otis ...thanks again
Thanks, Bert!
I got a pic with Dan when he did the Exile On Main Street show at Cannery Ballroom. What a show. Bobby Keys and a list of great musicians and vocalists.
Thanks for this! 👍👌😎🇨🇦💘
Thank you, Marian!
One thing is for sure about your channel. Always an EXCELLENT story or stories being told! I absolutely love it! Thank you, Otis for your time, and all your hard work on these great videos! It's very much greatly appreciated by me & many others I'm certain. Already ready to have my morning coffee with you & the rest of the diehards come Saturday morning. Good Lord willing and the creeks don't rise. See ya then my friend.
Thank you, Raleigh!
Jammin Me is one of his best tunes!
Dan is so cool without trying. Love ALL of his stories & the way he tells them.
Tom Petty was another of my Prine-like heroes.
Ya know… I heard one time he was in The Traveling Wilburys.
Can you believe that?
More Mike Baird, please!
Thanks, Otis.
I saw the Satellites open for David Bowie in Toronto in 1987. (Glass Spider tour.) To be honest, I had never had of the band. Well - colour me impressed, LOVED that rock a billy / driv'en sound. When out after my next payday and got the album.
"That well toasted smile"... well now, don't that paint a picture of many a summer camping trip from back in the day. Funny - booze brings out the fighter in many, weed just mellows... you don't see fist fights among people burning herb.
Fantastic thank you...
great analogy of Mark Twain's style with Tom Petty's; think I'll keep that.
I see you uncovered “the pic”!
Thanks Otis, your editing makes me sound almost smart 😜
And I thank the folks that left all the kind comments.
Much love to ya, Dan and thanks again for being part of this! : }
You by yourself, and with the Satellites, are some of my favorite music.
Peace
Another great interview…Baird is a RnR hero
Thanks, Doug!
Man it’s insane how criminally underrated the Georgia Satellites are. Such a great band.
🤟 agreed!
Get your thumbs up for Otis!
Thinking back to the '80s and Georgia Satellites self titled debut. I remember thinking that this band just saved rock and roll. That is who Dan Baird is to me. Special place! This is really great stuff you are putting out: It gives me a great sense of the real person in the artists we so much enjoy, and always respectful. Thanks so much.
Thank you, Jimmy!
I hope he's OK.
I got to see that tour. Watch the Georgia satellites Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the Dell Fuegos at Pineknob in Michigan. It was a fantastic show. Let me tell you all three of those bands rocked out hard.
Thanks my friend for yet another great ( but very sad story) I really appreciate your channel!
Thanks, Randy!
I remember Neenah Cherry opening for you guys in Toronto.. weird af
This is great! You are a great story teller. And you too my friend are genuine and regular folk.
Another great one Otis
Dan's the man
Thanks, Chuck!
Saw the great TP/Satts/Fuegos tour, SaratogaSprings, NY.
Pack up the Plantation tour was great!
Also with Dylan and farmaid
I love the comparison with Mark Twain, all the more because Tom wrote the lyric (damn I forgot the song title), "gonna impress all the women/pretend I'm Samuel Clemens/wearing suckers and white linen" ... great interview, hearing a conversation touching on his passing always painful for us all of course. That's from Down South, fantastic song but somehow still easy to overlook when pondering his wealth of songs!
Down South. I live and grew up not far from where Mike went to high school. They nailed the culture. Dark past, keep your mouth shut, all documents remain sealed, payoffs. @@taljechin God, I love Down South.
Remember the Gainesville Green
Dan is so cool. Thanks for sharing!
Someone needs to get in touch with Stevie VanZandt and get the Otis and Dan show on outlaw country
