I was briefly in a band that toured in Holland with Dick back in the early 1980s, and played some other gigs with him too; and he was a top chap and a pleasure to work with and know. Good on ya Dick !
Mick Jagger should consider himself lucky, if he has friends like Dick Taylor around. That sort of a friend is more precious than all the fame collected.
And so much much more than R&B...what a catalog, and to think they had to overcome a lack of gobs of money with the financial wolves to deal with for considerable stretches. Maybe that somehow made them so special; their artistry.
All this proves is that you are never too old for music; making it or enjoying listening to it. Rock on, Dick Taylor. You're a great guitarist and we are happy for all that you do.
I actually liked the Pretty Things back ion the 60's and bought their albums, but nothing came close to the Rolling Stones, I met Ian Stewart and he let me help him set up the Stones equipment in '66 at a concert, and for helping him, the invited me back stage, into the dressing room to meet the band and allowed me on stage to watch the group standing behind Charlie Watts. They were all nice to me and shook my hand on first meeting, and when leaving the stage to get into their limos. A great moment in my life, I've had many great moments too. Seeing the Beatles live in '64 was certainly one of them. Great times, not like the mess we live with today.
Dick Taylor should have much more recognition than he has. He is a great musician and did a great job with the Pretty Things ... "SF Sorrow" is an absolute masterpiece of the psychedelic period, the first opera-rock in history, before "Tommy" by The Who and before any other
Really interesting interview with a true rock & roll gent. I went to the Pretty Things farewell gig at the O2 recently & Dick played superbly. A selection of songs from SF Sorrow with Floyd legend Dave Gilmore on second guitar sounded amazing, it surely is the ‘concept album’ time forgot!
Sir Michael Philip Jagger, one of the best singers/songwriters of all time and the best and most imitated frontman who has ever lived on this planet. All my respect and admiration for this living legend.
Loved "Don't bring me down" Pretty Things. I remember the guitar player looked kind of mean. Turns out it was this guy. Couldn't meet a nicer person. Amazed the Pretty Things kept going,
A very nice person and if the Stones play in London these summer it would be a dream if Dick Taylor play a song with them. Maybe Road Runner or Mona.....He brings Mick and Keef back together so come on boys - bring him up on stage....
If anyone reads books about the Stones , the best one is Bill Wyman's excellent " Stone Alone " , they all mention Dick Taylor with some affection . He was their first bass player , but he became a bit bored playing bass . He is an excellent guitar player , as any Pretty Things fan will know . I have never really heard Dick playing bass , other than on this doco. but Bill was perfect for the Stones . Keith Richards ' book is worth reading as well .
I agree Paul, Bill's book is so detailed in every respect - Keith's "Life" is good but some agree it's somewhat embellished in parts , still couldn't put it down until I'd devoured it, though :)
What a lovely bloke! His philosophy's spot-on. He's there on a beach on The Isle of Wight with his gorgeous dog, and seemingly unscathed by rock'n'roll. I wonder if The Stones thought of asking him to rejoin when Bill Wyman left. Pretty Things are an interesting band in their own right.
What a charming and articulate gentleman, Dick Taylor, is! Great video! Thank you! .... The only thing which puzzles me, slightly, is, i always thought Dick Talor, joined The Stones, after poor Brian Jones's demise, back in 1969??? So, i am a bit confused, when he said he briefly joined them, at the start of their musical career, during the very early 1960's??? I have even seen video clips and photos, of Dick Taylor, as a handsome, long haired, blond young man, during his first appearances, with The Stones!!! Very confusing! LoL! xxxx
The Stones should invite Dick Taylor for a guest appearance as The Rolling Stones really did start at Dick Taylor's house before they knew Brian Jones.
Circa 1991, Mr Taylor recorded in Chicago w/the "Pretty Things & Yardbird Blues Band" . I knew their bassist, Richard Hite, so he brought them to visit. Taylor's the most unaffected man. If I didn't already know his history, I never would've heard it from him.
Dick Taylor was playing in a band in a pub/restaurant in Ryde, Isle of Wight ( Not the Pretty Things ) I think they were called the Tea boys or something, he didn't like us singing along with the band from the bar, he was a tad grumpy that night.
I never understood my country, America. How fantastic bands from Europe who, by the way, play arenas that dwarf the biggest stadiums in our country, are soooo small here. Never made sense. When I was fifteen in 1985, got Louder Than Bombs, by the Smiths, yet couldn't find one of "the kids who dressed in black", who knew them! I just wanted to talk about that amazing band. No dice. I believe that the Smiths when they came to Boston played the Paradise. Nice cozy 400 capacity place. That tour started in the UK. I'd like to see the venues they were playing there. Whembly Stadium maybe. The Pretty things are another of the many examples of bands who swept Europe. The Pretty things were amazing, yet my father who was a big music fan at the time doesn't even know who they are. It sucks. But, the amazing UA-cam will fix all of that! Kids, you have to realize just how hard it was back then to find anything underground. Next to impossible sometimes. Try finding Madness, Absolutely Madness in 1985. I didn't get hold of them shits for a year! But, when I finally grabbed one up, it was like, Yeah!!!!!!! Woooo Hooooo! Sorry for rambling. Great documentary.
I didn't know who the Pretty Things were. They were invisible in America but British Bands were the most popular by far with the Stones, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Billy Idol, David Bowie, Kinks, Who, Queen, Black Sabbath, Elton John, Electric Light Orchestra, Police, Jethro Tull, Animals, Purcol Harem, T-Rex, Mott the Hoople, Atom Ant, Elvis Costello, Cream, Wings, Plastic Ono Band, Cat Stevens, Jobriath, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Herman;s Hermits, Zombies, Tom Jones, Yard Birds, Faces, Stevie Winwood, Melanie, Maryann Faithful, Donovan and even Petula Clark, but no Pretty Things.
Sf sorrow is a wicked pretty things album...and in my eyes people say the stones was the bad boys..but they didn't have a patch on the pretty things...there hair was longer and everything....there songs are defo more rawer ...love both bands tho... got to see the pretty things live and they was great
The story is by now so well known to the point of parody......but still great to hear from Taylor's perspective... Would still like to know for sure if the Stones considered The Pretty Things such a threat to their "bad boy opposite Beatles" standing...to the point the Stones made sure The Pretty Things never got invited on "Ready Steady Go" which could make or break a career.....It's probably just a rumour ,since Taylor doesn't seem to hold any grudge towards Jagger.
So he traded the self described "greatest rock band of all time" for the most influential (and consistent) rock band not in the hall of fame. Ego explosion vs. quiet integrity.
Sad Eye from Savage Eye The Pretty Things. Ironically while Dick wasn't with them. Peter Tolson and Gordon Edwards on guitars. Both since past away. Jack Green on Bass. This is the second album on Led Zeppelin's Swan Song label!!! My first album on vinyl. Cross Talk, Dick returned to the band. They were great last year here in Australia!!!
A statement : I liked the Stones, i like their records and i have most of their records until "Stinking Fingers" (my last one) but .. but Gee i hate them live and i hate to watch this puppet shaking his little ass and prancing on stage + they were not good at all live + they had the worst drummer of the musical world, an automat, a robot .. bang bang bang for hours ..lol ... Yes I still like many of their records. That's it !

The very first 45 I bought was HONEY I NEED, I CAN NEVER SAY on the back side
Dick is my favourite guitarist since 1965. Great player during his long standing career with The Pretty Things (1963 - 2018) and still playing today!
What a lovely man...true gentleman indeed
A great guy and a great guitar player. Saw the Pretty Things in Monaco some years ago and they were still kicking ass and playing superb R&B
And so much much more than R&B...what a catalog, and to think they had to overcome a lack of gobs of money with the financial wolves to deal with for considerable stretches. Maybe that somehow made them so special; their artistry.
A true gentleman ,who kept his selfrespect.....
Humble guy, genuine and he seems happy. He made the right decision
Dick Taylor - One of the very best of London's (UK's) guitarists and a real gentleman.
Fantastic story, what a gentleman.....rock on, Dick!
All this proves is that you are never too old for music; making it or enjoying listening to it. Rock on, Dick Taylor. You're a great guitarist and we are happy for all that you do.
Such an enjoyable and informative clip. It puts things in perspective, answers questions. Dick Taylor is s very effective story teller.
Yes, I got Dick's autograph on Denmark St about 1964 - and, yes, I've still got it. Nice guy.
Lucky you . :)
Pretty Things deserve more ♥️♥️♥️

Great insightful interview on the genius of the Greatest Rock n Roll Band in the World! Bless Dick Taylor!
Wow , never knew , thanks for an early morning visit to rock history !
Anyone who can make a living as a musician without having to wait tables or any other kind of job is a success at their craft.
Dick Taylor should have much more recognition than he has. He is a great musician and did a great job with the Pretty Things ... "SF Sorrow" is an absolute masterpiece of the psychedelic period, the first opera-rock in history, before "Tommy" by The Who and before any other
Dick Taylor - the best sort of Englishman!

This man seems like a really nice gentleman.
He is actually, I can tell.
Very nice...
Even if he’d only ever done ‘Midnight To Six Man,’ DT would be a hero. A pivot on which the 60s and this all that comes after, turns
Super vidio thats what legends are made of thanks mr taylor bless u bee safe strange times

i was raised on rolling stones….so, …i like it.

Great vid of when I was a kid learning clawhammer blues from Dick in the cloakroom at Sidcup. Thanks Dick.

Keith bio by Victor Bockris is also well done.
Phil Frank BS if it was he would have been sued by everyone.

Sweet. Lovely video- really warm character Dick Taylor.
I met Dick Taylor a couple of Years ago. Made an Interview for my Magazine 'Dani's Rocksaurier Infos'.
Great musician and a Gentleman.
Thank you for this great UPLOAD...Me and my mum´s favourite Band, yeag ;-)))
Great interview
The Stones should invite Dick Taylor for a guest appearance as The Rolling Stones really did start at Dick Taylor's house before they knew Brian Jones.
thats a LIE!!!!!!!
Bishop boyd, No, it's not. When one deludes themself for years and hears the truth it's hard to swallow but it doesn't make it a lie, it's a fact.
that is a great idea
Brian "started" Stones.
Little Boy Blue and the Blues Boys would be more apropo.

Richard Hite from canned heat ????

More Dick! And Thanks For Helping The Group X

The Shods. The pretty things use to play at the same places as The Beatles did in early 60s

Touching narrative, good attitude!
What a nice and contented man.

I don't think Mick Taylor has any regrets leaving the Stones, either. Being in the Stones must be quite the grind.
really good documentary
What a gentleman, best wishes mate and so sorry to hear of Phils death

Great to see, prefer the Pretty Things music, dick taylor, what a legend 👍💪
Dick very much reminds me of Bill Wyman, very similar tone, accent and mannerisms 😊
