  • In this video I explain the design and features of my main forging hammer that I use for about 98% of my daily forging work. There is a lot more to this hammer than meets the eye at first so it bears a bit of going over. Also I go over some ideas about hammer selection for beginners and a recommendation on a beginner's hammer. Thanks for watching and have a great day!

Cool video. I have to make 1 of these. I like the idea of all the radius's.

..hmm, i hadn't thought of doing that. Good idea Doug!! there are several degrees of hammer-
    1- hammer
    2-bigger hammer, BH
    3-Bigger Damn hammer- BDH
    4- Big Fu(#in Hammer- BFH
5- Ridiculously Fu(#in Big Hammer- RFBH
and then you get into sledges...

I'm new to smithing going through watching your videos. I do have a question in regards to anvils. I watched a video here on you tube where the smith said that with a new anvil you need to clean and dress the edges of the face for tapering functions and drawing out, Is this true?

Also i do enjoy your videos. They are very informative.

Yes, they come very sharp when they are new and should be dressed. I leave the far side of my anvil corner fairly sharp, but round it slightly so it doesn't ship badly, then taper the near side from a small radius to a large one for doing rounded inside corners.

Do you recommend i do this with a file, sandpaper, small grinding disc? Sorry I know very little about this craft.

Any of the above is fine, whatever you are comfortable with, really.

Good, succinct explanation. I'm pretty sure I've seen the video by the young smith you mentioned -- ah, the certitude of youth... :-) If he then went on to extoll the virtues of his own new invention, the 800 year old Swedish hammer, then we're talking about the same guy. A question, though: Have you ever had any problems with the roll-over on your various dies chipping or deforming? They do make for an elegant shape. Clyde

Clyde Ulmer yep, same guy ;) I haven't hand any problems so far but I did have an apprentice take a chip out of the side of the round die of the hammer while also removing a sizable chip off of my anvil face!
