FYI: Pentatonix will be awarded a STAR on the HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME in 2023, the first acapella group to be so honored. And yes, it’s a really big deal. Billboard said about Pentatonix: “Pentatonix has succeeded where no other acapella group has: bringing acapella into the mainstream”…so happy and proud for them! #PentaholicSinceDayOne

Celine has also performed the same version with Josh Groban a few times, the first time was when Groban subbed for Bocelli during Grammy rehearsals when Groban was just 16 & had never performed in public before. IMO, the version with Groban tops Bocelli's. To me, Scott's lower baritone sounds sounds similar to Groban's.

While LOVE this song....really? Their masterpiece? Bohemian Rhapsody, Mary Did You Know and Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) are fantastic. Maybe I'm biased having listened to Queen growing up and their version of Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone), having lost both my parents in the last two years. My mother was in so much pain having broken so many vertebra that I feel the mash up of Amazing Grace and My Chains are Gone is so true for her and all her kids. We were in so much mental pain because of her physical pain. It was one of those things that you want your mom, but it was such a relief when she passed because she was finally set free of the pain she had been in. I'm just saying, this song, while one of my favorites, I wouldn't call their masterpiece. Sorry.

"The Prayer" was written for the 1998 animated film "Quest for Camelot" by powerhouse pop songwriters David Foster and Carole Bayer Sager. Celine Dion sang a short solo version in the movie in English, voicing the heroine's mother. Two Italian songwriters did an Italian solo version that Bocelli sang during the credits. Dion and Bocelli later recorded a duet version that appeared on both their albums in 1998-99. And of course other covers followed, and lots of really bad amateur attempts. The lyrics you are puzzled about are from the all-English version that some artists have recorded, which may be a re-worked version of Foster's original.

The female is Kirstie (rhymes with thirsty) Mandalado who has known the first two since high school when they started singing together. The gentleman of color to stage right is Kevin Olusola who is a beat-boxer, plays cello (and cello-boxes) as well as having perfect pitch, and speaks fluent Mandarin. The other colored gentleman is Matt Sallee who joined the group when Avi Kaplan left (amicably) to pursue other interests.

Firstly PTX do not just do "covers" they do original music as well. For men it's not called a "lady's range" perhaps a Soprano range, but more often it's just called being a Counter-Tenor. It's the original Bridge it's just being sung in English, they did the bridge in English because it's easier for people to understand the song, and for those who may never have heard the The Prayer. PTX pulls in groups of listeners that would not normally listen to A Capella music. And yes PTX can most definitely do Classical Music.

It’s helpful to just call it an upper octave as he did later rather than gender music. Men, women and non-binary people are singing different parts and can have any voice range. It’s helpful to do this so it’s more accurate to the music too. I’ve known women who sing tenor parts and it just gets confusing to use gender labels like this. You can still celebrate the talent and technique without using gendered language for the music.

The song was originally written as two versions, wholly in English for the one and wholly in Italian for the other, and it was sung in each language on the soundtrack of the movie Quest for Camelot, in English by Celine Dion and in Italian by Andrea Bocelli. The lyrics in question were part of the original English lyrics. It was only later that a mixed language version of the song as a duet was released and became popular. So more people are familiar with that version than either of the originally recorded versions. For this reason, as you mentioned, they are used to hearing these lyrics in the Italian part. However, it's not really difficult to find another version of this song with these lyrics in English.

There are thousands of Pentaholics out there just waiting for the next reactor! The first singer, Mitch, he has an angelic voice and can sing anything. Aside from the bass singer, they're all original members, but you'll notice Mitch and Kirsten change a lot, hair and clothes-wise. However, since you come from the classic school you ought to listen to Nightwish's version of Phantom of the Opera. It's a rock version of it, though the female lead - Tarja - is classically trained, and I've seen many coaches like her but especially the guy who does the Phantom part. He's got a more sinister approach and his voice and range is amazing. Well worth a listen and I'd love to see you react to it.

Mitch sings as a counter-tenor so his singing range starts high anyway. For him, that performance is a natural range. The way you discussed it, you seemed to think he was ALWAYS in some falsetto register, but no. Don't be surprised when he is way up there. Scott's baritone is wide-ranging but here he is in his normal range. Listen to them on something like Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, or their 90's Dance Medley and you will get a hint of where their voices reside.

  • @MelissaW-iz3uj
    @MelissaW-iz3uj Рік тому +5

OK, this has probably already been answered, but here's an intro for the group. Scott Hoying (the blond baritone), Mitch Grassi (the contra-tenor) and Kirstin Maldanado (the soprano) were friends for years prior to Pentatonix and started their own acapella group, The Trio. To audition for the acapella TV competition "The Sing Off" in 2011, a minimum of 5 were required in the group, so Avi Kaplan (the bearded bass seen in earlier videos) and Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer) were added to create this amazing group. Avi left the group (very amicably) in 2017 for family reasons and was replaced by Mitch Salee, who has been with the group since.
Now I still think they are absolutely wonderful, but I do miss Avi. Not only is he a true basso profundo, so his bass tones just RESONATE, but he also provided some vocal percussion to back up Kevin, making their earlier "percussion section" a bit richer.
I think Kevin gets a bit overlooked in the videos, leading a lot of reactors to think 'Well, they're adding in the percussion later", or have them asking "why is that guy just stomping his feet?" but no. It's all them. Scott provides bass undertones when Avi or Matt are featured and Mitch's incredible 6 octaves+1 range allows him to do whatever he darn well pleases, although his true strength (IMHO) lies in the alto/soprano range.

The "Christus Factus Est" opening or "Aha!" Singapore does have a true classical source. It was brought to the group by Avi (original bass) as a dramatic way to begin the piece, he having performed the full song with his chamber choir group in college. After he left PTX in 2017, the group tried various ways of doing an "Aha!" opener, such as "Greensleeves" (a fail) and none at all, just jumping right into "Aha!".

Kevin the human Beatboxing Beast also plays the Cello and listens to Classical music, so I think PTX can do Classical. Kevin has TicTox videos of changing other traditional songs into Classical versions.
Scott did a 6-week Intense training to learn the Italian part.
Kirstin was going to start the song and Mitch (counter-tenor) would join in at the "bridge" but after a few rehearsals they all agreed that Mitch should use his high voice because it is not falsettos but his true voice.
It's a set with a Behind the Scenes video with Kirstin talking about bringing the trees and outdoor scene inside the sound stage. Kevin also said he had too much snow on him the first time.
They can handle almost any song. Kevin listens to Classical, Mitch is alternate and rock while Scott and Kirstie tend to be pop music. Avi 2011--2017 was the deep base that blew out speakers and trained Opera. Matt 2017--present is a mixture that blends very well with the band.

Amazing reaction my friend Phil!....In 2017, the music world was shocked by the bursting onto the scene of a 22-year-old singer named Dimash Kudaibergen, who performed on the famous Chinese competition show for professional singers called “The Singer”... It was just It was necessary for this young man to make his first appearance, making a cover of one of the most difficult songs in the world, a famous French composition called "S.O.S. D'un Terrien En Détresse", to be considered from that moment on as the best singer in the entire planet....No one in the musical field had ever seen a human being, being able to reach vocal ranges above 7 octaves and several semitones, that is, all 88 keys of a digital piano, which reaches a little more than 7 octaves and as if that weren't enough, sing the more than 12 languages...Since then all kinds of experts (Vocal coach, analysts, singing teachers, youtubers, reactors, etc.) have dedicated themselves to reviewing their presentations to try to understand how someone can sing this way...The incredible thing is that that presentation in China was in 2017 and 5 years have passed since then, but what Dimash has done in these 5 years is to further improve his wide vocal range, which is currently practically above of the 8 octaves... The Covid pandemic stopped his concerts worldwide, all with tickets sold in just seconds, via the internet, but at the same time it ended up catapulting him to the top of popularity worldwide...Anyway, since I think you are one of those experts who have not yet met this impressive singer, here is the link of that presentation in China in 2017, with the song S.O.S. and I would like you to mention my name as the person who recommended him to you..It is a more recent video than the others, so it does not have the same number of views as the previous ones, which have millions of views, but it is a more complete video, with an intro, subtitles in several languages and with the improved quality of audio and sound....ua-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/v-deo.html

Yup they have all had formal music training of some sort. Matt went to Berklee school of music and Kevin played cello at Yale.

The verse and version of the song were from the album Celine Dion and Josh Groban recorded together. The arrangement was the same as Pentatonix, the verses the same, and Celine took the English verse while Groban sang the Italian verse. Dion and Bocelli sang it together too. It was magical. The Prayer is a beautiful song.

Hello Cover Coach, Thank you for the reaction and the commentary. Pentatonix are masters of their craft of A Capella, individually and collectively talented. This is a master piece and hoping that this will be Grammy #4 for them. Pentatonix are very good at paying homage to the essence of a song that they cover and then making it their own. Case in point here is that the original bridge was sung in Italian and Pentatonix opted to sing it in English. They are on a set and there is a Behind the Scenes for the making of the video and also a mini- documentary on the making of the Evergreen Album which shows their organic process of working together and features the recording of this song quite a bit. On the singers -- Mitch Grassi (first singer) is a counter tenor, voice of angel, crystal clear and clean, with at least a six-octave range, a vocal acrobat and a master of vibrators and runs. His vocal skill, control and mastery are on full display here. Scott Hoying (second singer) is a baritone, can cover bass and is a master of pop vocals and riffs. His operatic precision singing in Italian is so precise. Kirstie Maldonado (singing the second duet with Mitch) is always very sharp and capable of some amazing belting. Matt Sallee is the bass, did not have a solo in this song, but there are songs where he features clearly with a warm, deep tone. Kevin Olusola is the beat boxer giving all the sounds of drums and clashing cymbals, and capable of many other sounds. I have subscribed to your channel now and hope to see you do more Pentatonix reactions - 11 years of work, 3 Grammys, several albums, inducted with a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, covers and originals, classics and popular music - about 300 songs for you to react to!

Pentatonix is known for recording in natural settings. See the video of "Mary, Did You Know?". The tenor is Mitch Grassi, baritone is Scott Hoying, bass is Matt Sallee, alto is Kirstin Maldonaldo, and the beatboxer (orchestra-type accompaniment) is Kevin Olusola. See also their " Hallelujah", "Radioactive", and " Rather Be" for natural settings.

This is one of my favourite PTX tracks. I love them all, but this one, well, I cried. They’re also not just covers. They’re improvements of the originals in my opinion. And Mitch is a Counter- Tenor. Overall though, great reaction! Love professional reactions. You appreciate their talent from a pro perspective. More PTX please! Subscribed 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿❣️

if you are a vocal coach how do you not identify the first voice as a counter tenor, a male voice that can sing up near the lyric soprano's range, when they shift into their falsetto.

I am personally delighted, that some one finally mentioned the set! If you think about how complicated some of their sets have been, and the fact that this one is indoors, and for myself, the back lighting was phenomenal, especially at that point in the song. I believe the new line of lyric was written for this version only. I will definitely subscribe to your channel, because I like the way you explain the classical aspects of music. Everyone have a blessed day, and be blessed by this music.
