When you're talking about the "original voices" in Pentatonix, don't forget Kirstin. It's easy to do because in the early days she saw her role as supporting Mitch, but she also is formidably talented, and the men in the group knew and respected it all along, even when she didn't.
All of the PTX group have wonderful voices that blend together. What is so funny when Mitch talks about his earlier years he didn't feel like he was so good, so he stayed in the background! He said that so many folks made fun of his voice and him being GAY didn't help. I bet those same folks are looking back and saying how wrong they were about Mitch! I LOVE all the people in the PTX group, but for me it's MITCH that really stands out!!!! The funny thing when they were still in the competition, it was Avi that made a point of saying that he wanted to be in this group forever, and he was the 1st and ONLY one that baled! So you NEVER KNOW !!
Some people sing to sing and some people feel every word and phrase they utter, in the given circumstances they also irradiate the very emotion they feel and we feel what they feel, this is the case with Pentatonix and some other Artists.
This song always makes me cry. It is so heart touching. The lyrics are very emotional, asking God to make a safe place for us. It shows our reliance and trust in God and THAT is where we should always be. This is one of my favorite songs that PTX does. I agree with you that these kids really love what they do and I hope they know how much joy and peace they are spreading by sharing their God given talent with all of us. I hope they have a very long and productive career together as a music group and as friends. Thank you for your reaction. I can't get enough of PTX and the reactions of you reactors !
Love an emotional reaction! This song is touching and Pentatonix does it SO well. You KNOW a song is great when you can feel it! The most beautiful things in the world are felt with the heart!!!!
I loved your reaction, and your discussion of the details. I love every single member of this group, but this song really showcases Mitch. When others sing in cursive, Mitch sings in caligraphy.
Seeing how you appreciated this, I think you would like PENTATONIX THE RECORDING OF EVERGREEN. It shows them working together in the studio on the album that this song is part of. Really remarkable. A bit long but well worth it.
No burnout, except Avi. They've said they recently laid out a ten year plan with all their new goals. There has been a slight shifting in priorities. They've said being forced off tour in 2019 due to Covid was hard but probably beneficial for them all and they had to learn to lean a bit into other aspects of life... but they were sooooo relieved to get back on tour for Christmas 2021. Since Covid, though, Kevin got married and had a daughter, Matt got married, Kirstin is pregnant and Scott just got engaged. Mitch finally got out the solo project he'd been flirting with for years. So they aren't exactly the same group who, in 2015, was pulling a mobile recording studio behind their tour busses and going nonstop 24/7, but they still live music maybe 75% of the time 😆
Kirstin's baby was born on June 28th. Elliana Violet, or Evie for short. Mother and daughter are both doing well, though Kirstin reports that Floof has taken to waking up at 2 a.m. and crying for attention. She thinks he's trying to remind them that *he's* supposed to be their baby, too.
They all are amazing in their own way, I think with Scotts camelon-like vocal abilities he is overlooked most of the time. He is amazingly versatile vocally.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who cried the first time I heard them sing this song. They are so good there are no words to describe them. Heavenly? No, not good enough... Thanks for your awesome reaction!! I greatly enjoyed it! I'm glad the copyright police have relaxed a bit here. Six months ago this would have been blocked. Never to be seen on UA-cam. Please do their Daft Punk Medley and 90's Dance Medley next. Sending you love from Texas!!
It seems like the copyright police have become willing to let PTX songs that are vaguely spiritual pass through with fewer claims in the last few months.
I call it the "dynamic harmonies" of The Trio. You might have noticed the song is structured with two of the three handling lead vocals after Mitch does his solo intro. Mitch and Scott form the first pair, then it's Scott and Kirstin, followed by Mitch and Kirstin, and finally Scott and Mitch again. In each section, the 3rd member of the trio is providing that rich ambient background you were referring to. Kevin and Matt also contribute to this when they're not busy with vocal percussion and bass duties, respectively. It's truly masterful execution of a stunning arrangement.
I love all PTX songs but this is my favorite. I have watched it over 30 times and still cry. THIS IS WHY PTX IS THE BEST A CAPELLA GROUP IN THE WORLD🌎. 🎶🎙🎵
I loved your reaction and explanation for this one and I loved that it moved you - it made me cry too. The back and forth between Mitch and Scott is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. Matt, Kevin and Kirsty are killing it too. It's the blend and arrangements that make Pentatonix unique.
Really nice reaction, you pointed out some important things for us to take note of. The work ethic and their need to never let something out without it being breathtaking and beautiful keeps them at the pinnacle of their craft.
I think people forget that Scott is considered a baritone. He seems to use his voice in their music in upper register for the most part. I really like his (I call) his comfort zone.
Thank you for a great heartfelt, emotional reaction. I love it when reactors show their emotions and aren’t embarrassed. I love PTX and I agree that they absolutely love singing and they do it all the time and they do it flawlessly. A lot of Pentaholics say they don’t do covers
Love the richness in Scott's tone in this one, Kirstie's power notes are epic! And whenever Mitch and Scott come together in the harmony, I get chills. Great upgrade!
To see how they layer those backgrounds you were pointing out, please react to THE RECORDING OF EVERGREEN.. which includes some of the workings of The Prayer.. Matt is the ONLY member not original to the group but he has been with them for 6 years now.. he has been a wonderful addition!
Yes the can break you emotionally. They have done it more than once to most Pentaholics. Their original song Thank You made me ugly cry. I think we have been.... Mitch Slapped Scott Shocked Kirstie Clapped KO'd by KO Mesmerized by Matt All at once
The 3 original members were Kirsten, Scott and Mitch. They knew each other as kids and were inseparable singing and writing music and working with the same music teachers. Unbelievable! Kevin is a beast, of course, but to me Matt is SUCH a wonderful addition. He’s probably my favorite, but it’s hard to have a favorite with Pentatonix. 🎼🎶
So appealing that you have the "peripheral" hearing capacity to pull the harmonies forward and back from the melody, as well as follow the lead. That takes focus and a bit of musical "faith" - that the right stuff will actually be there. So rewarding when it is.
Amazing Grace, My Heart with You, Run to You, Mary Did You Know, Imagine, Can’t Help Falling in Love…these are all harmonic masterpieces. For cool and different sounds, Gold, Havana, Cheerleader, Dancing on my Own, White Winter Hymnal. Loved your analysis and reaction.
Hello PrymalChaos. Loved your reaction and thank you for explaining the "dancing sounds' going on behind the main vocals. PTX are masters of their craft for sure. A Capella at its very best. Stellar arrangement. The vocal skills of Mitch are unmatched with his ethereal sounds, the notes he hits and holds, his runs and vibratos. Scott with his operatic precision singing in Italian. Kirstie so sharp and belting. Matt so warm and deep underneath. Kevin driving the beat with the percussion and clashing cymbals. All five of them together with the harmonies, the crescendo and the PTX signature Wall of Sound. Singing with such conviction and bringing a message of hope for the world. Videography is fantastic. How did this escape the Grammys? So happy to see that you are reacting to Pentatonix. More PTX please.
When someone I respect as an analytic no holds barred critic is so emotionally moved by this song, I’m somewhat validated…lol. I still choke up a bit each time I hear it. Great reaction and kudos to you for letting it play out at the end! I suspect that some of the other reactors carve it into bits and pieces to avoid the emotional connection, again kudos!!!
Thank you for the breakdown of this. I hear every part of a song like you do so it's refreshing when I hear someone else appreciate it. Thank you as well for enjoying PTX. I've been following them since I saw them on The Sing Off.
Loved your reaction to this! Amazing Grace will also hit you in the feels. Scott’s range is off the charts. He does a run/riff in Superfruit’s cover of Rise (Katy Perry) that’s so high I thought it was Mitch or Mary Lambert.
Thank you for pointing out Scott's ability to go into a bass range. Scott is really trying to sound operatic, and he's doing a good job of it, considering Avi was the operatic bass. I saw a drummer's reaction to this video, and he said Kevin's percussion placement was perfect. You are so right. I like listening for Matt. Yes....they can "pinch hit" for each other, which is great. If you are interested in seeing some behind the scenes of how they put this song and the other songs from their "Evergreen" album together there is a behind the scenes for the making of Evergreen. It's fascinating. I hope you react to more of their videos. One of my faves is in 5-part harmony called "My Heart with You".
I don’t like saying I have a favorite but when a reactor asks “who’s your favorite?”, Scott jumps into my head. All of them are incredible and together they are perfection but Scott will always have a special place in my heart ❤️
Two original voices in the group...with Kirstie. The three went to school and sang together in choir. I think countertenor and baritone are the terms you're looking for.
Now that you have heard The Prayer, you should react to “Pentatonix - The Recording Of Evergreen “. It contains The Prayer spoilers. Also recommend their Daft Punk (medley) and 90s Dance Medley.
Loved your analysis and the breakdown of this song. Really a breakdown of all their songs. Thank you for an awesome reaction. If you can listen to this song and not feel a bit emotional or shed a tear then you weren't truly listening. ❤
I’m interested in your reaction to one of their early covers, that of Dog Days are Over from their Sing-Off competition. It remains one of my favorites for a few reasons: The most obvious will be Mitch’s solo which is much like Hallelujah where the set-up happens and everyone drops away but him. It’s stunning. But the secret gift in this piece is the rare and early appearance of Avi’s throat-singing which he does in the beginning of the song. Nobody ever mentions this and it’s fabulous. And lastly I am blown away by Scott every time I see this video. He carries you on a ride for the duration of the song, and he is relentless. His energy and stamina are unbelievable. Look for it. You won’t regret it.
I would love to hear your reaction to a more modern mash up of two songs/artists. New Rules X Are you that somebody. Scott takes the lead, but, it’s the background vocals of Kirsten & Mitch, combined with Matt’s amazing bass and Kevin’s beat boxing that absolutely nails this combination of the two songs.
In the Making of Evergreen video they laughingly comment that they'll never worry about hiring a choir for the background again - they just layered their own voices in for the "choir" - I'm okay with that. :)
I don't think there's been burnout, but I do think that covid forcing them to take a prolonged break from touring did them all good. They got to spend time on their personal relationships and their homes...eg Scott said it was the first time he felt like they got chance to really settle in since they bought the house. And most of them seemed to have had chance to work on passion projects: Mitch with Messer; Scott with writing a musical, finishing up the podcast he'd started with Rozzie Crane back in 2019 (it's called Ugh! You're So Good and I found it a fun and fascinating insight into different guests ideas of what success means and how they felt they achieved that, highly recommend), & I believe he said something about submitting/selling TV show options; Kevin put out a new ep; and of course a couple babies have been created....and that's just the things we know about. And on top of that they never stopped writing and finding a way to record for PTX from their homes. Finally getting to finish their original album The Lucky Ones (not a single miss among anyone those songs for me). I felt the music they put out since then has just... levelled up, my assumption is that either the rest from constant touring helped (even though not burnt out that schedule has to be wearing in the vocal cords and body), or they had time to really focus on developing their natural techniques with a vocal coach or something. And as a bonus, when they finally got to go back on tour they were re-energised and excited to go. So, while I don't think anyone would have said their was burnout happening, per se - In Feb 2000 you can look at their live performances from the tour they were on at the time and see they were as good as ever, and probably they were even still progressing steadily (they've never stopped striving to improve) - but I do think they all benefited hugely from the down time in all areas of their lives, and for me their voices really did all seem to take a big step up during/after quarantine. Of course, as a bonus we were the lucky ones who all got some fantastic stuff out of it, like: the "Home" medley, "Thank You" (written by Scott & his now fiance), and "Mad World" (which were recorded in acknowledgement of the situation); a video of Mitch standing on a roof singing a cover of Billie Eilish's "Your Power" (which destroyed me the first time I heard him sing it) and his fascinaing Messer EP; the mini documentary "Making of Evergreen" (Evergreen being the Christmas album they made in just 2 weeks); a couple parody vids from Kirstie & her partner (on his channel Hausdo) called "Hello" and "Good Morning Quarantine"; Some really fantastic and hilarious tik toks and insta lives; and, finally a long-awaited, full new album of originals (then the deluxe version with even more songs on) which we otherwise might have still been waiting for now. And I'm also seriously waiting to find out more about Scott's musical, last he mentioned it he had 10 songs down, he never gave a hint on the subject of it hough, sadly.
Mitch and Scott had a side project of a group with just them in it called Superfruit. It's not a Capella. I highly recommend watching Superfruit videos. Also Kirstin has her solo work of which there are videos on UA-cam. They are off of her album titled Love.Watching Kevin's solo work is out of this world. It's on his channel titled KO. Mitch has His solo work under the name of Messer.
They just keep getting better and better! Think some members are doing more exploring in solo work as well, but so far as I know, sticking with the magic of their beautiful combo. so well demonstrated here. # On topic of Mitch's 'stop you in your tracks' unique sound - there is another to equal if not surpass. >>> Have you heard Forestella yet???!!! If not - HIGHLY recommend you start with their Hijo De la Luna. Is simply stunning. 😄👍
@@PrymalChaos while we're at it you NEED to check out Scott's duet with Shoshana Bean "All To Me", no words, it's a true experience, I cry every time 🤌🏻
So glad I found your channel! I might have skipped on by because I'm not a metal head and the name of your channel scared me a bit. But I love your music appreciation and musical insights. Cheers!
Thanks Kelli! Just between you and me, the name is just my old Gamertag. 😆😆 Thanks for taking a chance. You'll find all kinds of classical and adult contemporary stuff on my channel. There is certainly some awfully terrifying metal stuff, but you can skip those. 👍
Makes me cry and I am an atheist, go figure? I think it's Mitch and the harmony that gets to me more than lyrics on some of their songs that are in the same theme. They are so damn good! The one they did, "Run to You" sucker punches me every time, I studied the lyrics and have come to only two decisions on that one, very personal thoughts came to mind. Not going into that here.
I've always thought that the idea of prayer and the divine have always been beautiful concepts; there's just absolutely zero proof of any of it and there's no reason to think that the bible isn't just another book. Music is music and some of the best music has been inspired by faith.
They have mastered the ability to use God Given Gifts to the MAXIMUM! They sing from their Hearts.
When you're talking about the "original voices" in Pentatonix, don't forget Kirstin. It's easy to do because in the early days she saw her role as supporting Mitch, but she also is formidably talented, and the men in the group knew and respected it all along, even when she didn't.
The unseen star of the team is the guy doing the arrangements, he is bloody brilliant!
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is called a Mitch slap.
So you NEVER KNOW !!
He certainly is a unique talent.
It’s them and he says yea. That sounds good maybe not. It let me think that haha.
This SHOULD be a 4th Grammy!
Mitch is an incredible counter-tenor with a six octave range .all of them have at least four octaves.
Some people sing to sing and some people feel every word and phrase they utter, in the given circumstances they also irradiate the very emotion they feel and we feel what they feel, this is the case with Pentatonix and some other Artists.
I agree about Scott and appreciate you giving him credit that many may overlook.
This song always makes me cry. It is so heart touching. The lyrics are very emotional, asking God to make a safe place for us. It shows our reliance and trust in God and THAT is where we should always be. This is one of my favorite songs that PTX does. This song was the first time I ever had the pleasure of hearing Scott’s full chest baritone voice. It’s superb!
Lovely tone.
Scott's full low is awesome and his falsetto is just as incredible. Check out Superfruit's Defying Gravity for his great falsetto!
Ha! Very true.
I LOVE your description of Mitch’s vocal ability. Calligraphy. Perfect
Well said Carla! Agreed!
Excellent perception!
Omg, what an awesome metaphor!!!

I concur. It really shows their creative process.

Oh yes!! Evergreen! YES YES YES!
Great descriptions applied to the sound that MAKES them great.
Nice summary. I understand that some of their current down time is going into song creation.
Matt got married too, just this past January.
Avi has a pretty good solo career going on now too.
But all this to say that the quality of the Pentatonix sound hasn’t gone down with Avi’s leaving the group.

Amen to that! 🙏❤️ He is so versatile and soulful!
Scott could sing any genre and ve fantastic
'Run to You' is the one that gets me every time. The bridge is heartbreaking.

This is artistry at it best. When a song is sung that brings out the depth of our souls, then it is magic and a gift to us all❣️

If this doesn’t bring tears something’s wrong lol! They’re amazing! Great reaction! New Subscriber here!
I loved your informative and reactive, take on this performance!
The editing in this video is amazing. The whole video is amazing too.
Goose bump when the stood in a line before they even started because I knew it was going to be awesome
Passion. It's what makes great art. They are suffused completely in passion...the love of music.
Actually, Matt replaced Avi on bass, but you are correct that Scott has the ability to go low and covers bass when Avi and/or Matt are singing.
Thank you for this heartfelt and knowledgeable reaction, it fitted the song so well. Just superb.
I’ll certainly take a look. Thank you!
Beautiful reaction, and very insightful. Thank you. 🙂
Thanks Craig!
In the Making of Evergreen video they laughingly comment that they'll never worry about hiring a choir for the background again - they just layered their own voices in for the "choir" - I'm okay with that. :)
Yeah! Me too!
Still brings me to tears….❤
Mitch is an insane tenor, but Scott is actually a great baritone thus his deeper range. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! 😁
Glad to be here!
Tears are a staple when listening to the Pentetonix
I much enjoy your reactions. Looking forward to more reactions. Bring on the PTX!
Kevin does not get enough credit on this song. From beatboxing to high tenor parts in a split second and back again.
You are so right. Very moving. Loved your reaction. ♥️
It took me a minute the first time I watched this one to realize that the descant in the bridge wasn't Kirstin, but Mitch. 🤯🤯🤯
scott has amazing range, you've talked about his lows, you should check out Scott's collaboration with Rozzi "Lose Us" to hear his INSANE highs 🔥
Amazing voice.
I love your reaction. I think its awesome that you can show your feeling and act on it . I love your channel.!!!!!
The entire group instinctively know how to get out of each others way so the soloist is heard
Really like your observations, well thought out and on point. Not just fanboy, but understanding what is going on.
Amazing reaction!!
Just saw your thumbnail: yes yes yes PTX can and will break you emotionally and now I'll watch your video. 😃 😊
Atheist here! Makes me cry too xx
I've always thought that the idea of prayer and the divine have always been beautiful concepts; there's just absolutely zero proof of any of it and there's no reason to think that the bible isn't just another book. Music is music and some of the best music has been inspired by faith.
Without the belief in God's existence their would be no faith.
Just like without suffering there'd be no compassion. Faith is like the wind you can't see it but you can feel it.
Scott is the Middle/Ground of the group with his middle range.!
Pretty sure anyone who doesn't get at least choked up during this song has no soul. Music is so moving at its core, and this one just hits so hard.
Think if it is opening rather than breaking. then it can feel good❣
Beyond beautiful!
I knew you were gunna cry!!! I'm not a crier at all...EVER! It's my way of protecting myself. I cried like a baby!
The older I get the more I am a sucker for this kind of thing!
@@PrymalChaos same for me, started with Lauren Daigle's "You Say".
