Brett Michaels wrote this song while staying at his parents over Christmas. He found out that his bodyguard and close friend Kimo (who is in the Every Rose Has Its Thorn video) had passed away. He wrote this song. Verse one is about the televangelist Jimmy Baker in the 80's, the second verse is about his uncle. For the part about Kimo, he didn't know that they were going to show pictures of Kimo. You might have noticed that he had to stop lip synching because he was tearing up. The lyrics are all factual. Brett Michaels and Poison are more than just a party band. There lyrics to many songs are about life's experiences. Check out songs like Life Loves A Tragedy, Let It Play, Cry Tough, Theatre of the Soul and Stand. Many people also don't know the humanitarian work done by these guys too.

My daddy was in Vietnam and he hardly ever talked about it. He did start to open up a little bit before he died and he told me of a time that he and two friends came back in country to California and my dad was the only one in civilian clothes so the others had to wait in the bathroom (basically hide) while Dad went and bought them regular clothes because they knew if they walked around in uniform, it could cause problems. Dad had horrible nightmares but never once did I hear him say he wished he hadn't gone because he had been drafted and he loved his country. Miss you Dad

I am 60 years old and was just a kid when Nam happened, but I had so many members of my family serve in wars. From WWII to Vietnam. Being the youngest I have seen 80% of those family members laid to rest now. With every one of them I shed tiers of joyous sadness because finally the memories for them were finally over.

Here is the thing about Poison- they knew how to party but they were the only band that put out SINGLES every album that had a serious message - no other hard rock 80s bands would risk their careers by doing that- "I won't forget you" written about loss through drugs and overdose, "Fallen Angel" tackled Hollywood prostitution (casting couch) and rape way before Weinstein, "Something to Believe In" tackles Vietnam, Suicide, homelessness and Protestant Ministers theft, "Life Goes on" tackles murder in the industry, while "Stand" was a song spiritual awakening- Sorry, Poison outperformed, outplayed, out wrote, outperformed and out charted most 80s bands for a reason. They were full of talent. Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Def Leppard never put it on the line- they kept everything generally skin deep. Hats off to Poison, especially for Something to believe in- going after Vietnam and Suicide in the '80s and early '90s was not a hot topic- everybody wanted to party and Poison said- no- we need to stop and remember. Always respected this band for this song.

But I also think that everyone can relate to this song in their own way, because everyone needs something to believe in. 🎸

Great song! And Jordan CC Deville is the guitarist, and he can play! That solo went with this song so well, it had so much meaning and it was so heartfelt, the whole song was brilliant and so personal to Bret. Every Rose has it's Thorn is also BEAUTIFUL. Those are 2 of their slower song's. But they have SO many more. Trust me! Keep playing them! Billy Joel and Kenny Loggins! U won't be disappointed!

I'm 54, so Poison is from my generation. Ever since the 80's heavy metal has been one of my 2 favorite music genres. Hair metal got me into metal, and I have moved onto more extreme versions like goth, black, and death. Us headbangers tend to put down the hair bands. Thank you for reminding me where it all started. It was groups like Poison that made hair metal rule the 80's. I caught them on the Ratt Poison tour where they were opening for Ratt. Ratt was the big name at the time but part way into their act, the audience started chanting for Poison to come back out. HAve you listened to their "Ride the Wind." Everyime the Army moved me, this was the song I'd start the trip with.

Everything you ever wanted to know about this song:
The whole road crew was like a family by the time they finished touring for the second album "Open Up and Say... Ahh". Kimo, Poison's bodyguard, like all the other members of the crew had gotten heavy into drugs, alcohol, and women. Over the months that their third album, "Flesh & Blood" was being recorded, Kimo's health got consistantly worse. One day in late December of 1990, he died all alone in his Palm Springs hotel room. When Bret got the call on Christmas Eve, he went into hysterics. He locked himself in his room and didn't come out until this song was finished. It tells not only the life story of Kimo, but of Bret's cousin Bob who was wounded in Vietnam. The video for the song is equally as powerful. When Bret saw the image of Kimo on the screen, he lost his compsure and had to leave the set for several hours before coming back to finish his part. The video got 1st place in MTV's "World Series of Video" Peoples Choice Awards.

My dad was a Naval Aviator for 27 years, with 3 tours in Viet Nam (2 as an attack pilot). I remember him coming home from one tour, landing in San Francisco. I went with my mother to pick him up at the airport. As we were walking in the airport (my dad in his dress white officer uniform), protesters were spitting on him and yelling "baby killer" and other things at him. My dad walked with his head high, with his arms around me and my mom. He didn't say a word, just kept walking. I was never prouder than at that moment. RIP dad, my hero.

If you're wanting to get to a harder Poison song, you have to try the title track from their very first album, the song they still use to open every concert, "Look What the Cat Dragged In." I've seen them in concert eight time dating back to 1991, and this was their opening song every single time. It was never released as a single, but God only knows why. It's the heaviest song I can remember from them, and my all time favorite. Or you might want to go with my second favorite song of theirs, "Fallen Angel." Others have mentioned "Every Rose has it's Thorn." It is definitely a pure power ballad and their only song to go all the way to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.

I'm old enough to remember how our soldiers were treated when they returned from Vietnam. I was raised by WWII veterans (my grandmother and her brother), so I have a connection to "our boys", and it started very early in my life. At the time, I couldn't understand why "our boys" were treated like they were coming back from Vietnam. I saw the protests on the news, I saw people waiting at the airports spitting on them, calling them all sorts of vile names, and coming from that "World War II" family, I couldn't reconcile what was going on. I mean, I was still in single digits in age, and didn't understand it all. It would be many years before I learned more about what happened over there. I have friends who were there, and they also won't talk about it. I have a couple of friends who refused to go, because they were THAT against that conflict. It's not that they were "cowards", but they knew more about what was going on than many parts of the general public.
I'm an "early Gen-Xer".... I was born in February 1967. So Vietnam being on the news every night was part of my early childhood. Even the stuff we were shown was disturbing. Learning more about it later in life did help to explain things, but given what "our boys" had to deal with over there, it's no wonder many of them cracked.
Edit: Also, the line "Sometimes I wish to God I didn't know now, things I didn't know then." really hits me hard. As someone who has been widowed (my first wife died of cancer in 2006), that line really hits hard. It's a perfect line about PTSD, which covers many different types of mental trauma.

My uncle is a Vietnam vet, and he never talked about either. Except for one time, while on vacation, when he was drunk. It's funny how many of them are exactly the same in the fact they refuse to talk about it. The shit they went through, and how they were treated, was truly unbelievable.

My dad was in 'Nam as a Marine. He was one of 3 that survived when his unit was overrun. He never talked about it to me until I returned from Desert Storm as a Marine. Then he told me everything, and we cried together. I took him to the Vietnam Memorial in DC. He said, "Thank you. I would never have gone without you." He lived the majority of his life in constant pain from battle injuries, but that never stopped him from being a great man.

I was a child born in Vietnam, towards the end of the war. And it's men like your father, that I owe a huge "thank you" to.
If it weren't for men like your father... I wouldn't have the life that I've lived. Soldiers knew of an impending attack by the N. Vietnamese on the village I was born in.
The U.S. soldiers removed the people of the village, before the attack would take place. And because of this... I have been given the greatest gift! I was adopted by an American family. And I have lived in the greatest most freest place on the planet for most of my life. America!
    Thank you.

For those who were there...the 90's music club scene...the touring cover bands...our memories...we knew the end was coming, we knew the music was changing. We listened , to remember those times, to value our past, to sing along. Some of us did take the high road, while others took the low road. For us it was looking for that break, that moment in time that would forever change our lives. Today we are still lost, we are still searching.

I've never made it through this song without tears. My team sergeant was a tunnel rat in Vietnam. I remember him having nightmares about the tunnel collapsing. He never let it stop him from doing his job though. I was lucky to have such a man in my life. He turned me into the man I became and I'll be forever grateful. Agent Orange took him years too early. He's having a scotch at the big drop zone in the sky now. I'll see you soon brother.

I found this in an article that gives a breakdown of the song:
The song is about two people in Bret Michael’s life. The first is his personal friend and bodyguard, James Kimo Maano or Kimo. Kimo got hooked up in the rock & roll lifestyle and with his abuse of drugs and alcohol, his life tragically ended early. When Bret found out, he was inspired to write this song as a tribute to his friend. When you watch the video of this song, you see an emotional Bret Michaels reacting to pictures that showed up on the TV of his friend. The Director of the video didn’t tell him the pictures were being used and it took Bret by surprise. It was a cruel trick, but it captured a real moment.
The other person is Bret’s cousin Bob who had been wounded in Vietnam and the song talks about his struggles mentally with what happened as well as the loss of so many of his cousin’s friends in the way. It paints a stark reality of the damage war can have on a person.
The whole song discusses reasons for Bret’s loss of faith whether it is from false prophets, the homeless, the impact of war or the loss of a close friend. The song paints such a graphic picture that you can’t help but be touched by it in some way. And depends on your mood when you listen, it could even bring a tear to your eyes.

C.C. really slays on this song. He makes that guitar cry! But Bret really draws that pain out of you. Whatever your experience, there is something that resonates in this song.. trauma, someone dying too young, the inequities of the world.. etc. So much feeling. I cry every time I hear it. This power ballad and Skid Row's I Remember You and Bon Jovi's ballads are my favorites.
