Man I’m tired of this conversation by and large. There was nothing wrong with most of what was going on with “purity culture.” (That’s a supremely stupid title that we ought not to buy into. When we do, we are conceding ground to people that frequently are wolves, not wounded sheep.) Most of the critics I encounter are people who didn’t follow what they were taught. They engaged in premarital sex and/or pornography, or began dressing in a sexually suggestive manner. Of course they felt shame. They SHOULD. The scriptures makes it clear these things are shameful. What we do with that shame matters massively. Y’all handled that well by the way. The encouragement of simply teaching through the Bible and handling the topic as it arises is wise. It’s massively dishonoring to our brothers and sisters who were leading students years ago to broadly say “they did it wrong and screwed up a generation.” That sounds way more like something the accuser of the brethren would say, don’t you think? Addiction to lust is a solid point. Pointing out that it’s not gender specific is so important too. I’ve got a big chunk of girls openly lusting. I’m so proud of my fellow youth pastors who are having guys cover up at swim time the same way we ask the girls too. Yall shared some good stuff today. Thank you. Keep up the Gospel work. Blessings!
