    The con of mini vortex mixers vs a Badger style mixer is cost, longevity/reliability. The pro is zero mess and no paint waste.
    Trumpeter make a Badger style mixer under their Master Tool brand for a lot less (about half the price) than the Badger typically costs in ROW ouside the USA. For anyone with an electric drill & a metal file or grinding wheel it's easy to turn the detachable mixing blade to reduce its diameter so it fits inside a typical 17ml dropper bottle. I left my Badger standard diameter to fit jars, and my Trumpeter is modified diameter to fit dropper bottles. They mix better than a vortex mixer, but are messier.
    I recently bought a VM-300 vortex mixer (predecessor?) which is pretty much the INTLLAB (VM-370). Seemed well built inside from what I could see. 6 dropper bottles and no more than 90 seconds total running time on 12v DC and it stopped working. PSU check with multimeter confirmed the unit not the power supply. Failure rate of these things within 12 months is horrendous considering their cost. I'd love one for the convenience to save the mess as my purchase of the VM-300 attests, but no way am I paying AUD$170 for a FOUR E'S to atttain some probability of longevity and reliability just to mix hobby paint!

    I picked up a Typhoon mixer which is a more heavy duty version and I have no regrets..... with mixer balls in your paints and one of these it makes it soooo much easier to have properly mixed paints.

    Good review Kenny! I have a vortex mixer about the same size, just a little different form factor, and use it for all my dropper bottles. I still use my Badger mixer for Tamiyas. That way I don't have to worry about paint getting around the lid that prevents a proper seal.

      I get lazy with my Tamiya paints I always forget to clean the lip off. But the vortex is definitely a handy tool.

    Great review on this Kenny! I've got the finger nail polish one lol. I'm on the fence about this though hmmmm. Probably would be great for the AK enamel washes too.

      Thanks Joe. I am sure it would do awesome with the enamels also. I didn't even think about grabbing a bottle as I rarely use them.

    Good vid. Couple of points re the Badger stirrer. I have a Badger and a Trumpeter clone. However OOTB, neither the Badger or Trumpeter stirrers blade heads will fit inside the Vallejo dropper bottles. I bought the Badger first many years ago for Tamiya bottles. I bought the Trumpeter later for Vallejo dropper bottles. I modified the blade on it (90 seconds rotating against a file) to fit. Only have to take off a smidgeon to get it to fit. *Pros* They are inexpensive. They both do the job.
    But as you've mentioned, it's necessary to remove the nozzle insert on each occasion to use it with droppers. The real downside of the stirrers vs vortex though, is unavoidable wastage and the messy time consuming job of removing paint from the stirrer & blade after mixing. i.e. wiping followed by a rinse in thinner every time you mix as it has to be cleaned between paint colours for the obvious reason. It's just time consuming, messy, and wastes paint and thinners vs the vortex mixer. Another thing I noted of relevance. Outside the US, Tamiya acrylics are now generally only available in the smaller 10ml ground glass bottles. I suspect those smaller bottles wouldn't be as cumbersome to use in the vortex mixer as the 23ml ones.

    Nice review. I completely agree about the hand and arm issue. I use to do concrete cutting after high school helping a friend that owned the company. If you have had anything like carpal tunnel this isn't the mixer for you. I do use the Robart paint shaker because of this.

    Do you have an Amazon link that benefits you?
    I was researching home vortexes. I’ve worked in labs for 20+ years and used many many vortexes over the years - good on you for discussing the health issues! Back in the day I would sometimes vortex 300 or more samples a day, and it bears remembering that your HAND and wrist are getting the same treatment as the tube - leads to lots of repetitive motion issues. But I think for the hobby painter, it would be a minimal risk.
    Anyways, my search came down to this vortex and another, and then found your video. It answered all my remaining questions, thank you. It’s available for CAN$76 right now on Amazon so I just wanted you to get a cut if you are an affiliate.

    does it work well with laquer paints? they are so thick

    • @HobbyLinkInternational
      @HobbyLinkInternational  2 роки тому +1

      I don't use straight lacquers. But, I do use Tamiya acrylics which are lacquer based. If the pigments haven't settled and become a gloopy mess at the bottom then the vortex works great. If it has become that mess at the bottom i use my Badger Mixer and then hit it with the vortex mixer.
