I bought one of the paint shakers as being an older bloke I was developing a persistent pain in my elbow, it’s been a game changer for me and the consistency of the paints is noticeably better. Even Corax White!
Oh nice, I'm glad you've found it useful. 😀 If it's helping you, it's even better.
As a professional photographer, a light box is such a waste of money. I use my desk light and a white or black paper 😅 to each his own though
It's not something I've ever really used or owned (just played with others), and only had this for a few days. You do see a lot of bad pics around though, so if people find it useful, I think it has a place. 🤔
I have a light set up, but ind this alot easier as I don't have to move things around.
Miniac did a great video on this
Having worked as a professional photographer in the past, I have used everything from bubblewrap, through cling film to some old tights to diffuse light but there's nothing wrong with investing in a tool to do the job repeatably and consistently if you do it a lot!
Disagree fully with squidmar. Not everyone is a professional photographer. Iphone+Lightbox does wonders and I get often asked what my setup is and which type of dslr camera i was using..
@@VH1348 Iphone and a white paper with your already existing table light works too, its exactly the same and cost... what does a paper cost? 0.01 dollar?
Shot sweet and to the point. I have the Artist Opus shaker and I love it. Adding high grade stainless steel mixer balls really helps with the thicker metallic paints. The Vallejo bottles mix even better as they are thinner.
I got a vortex shaker back around Christmas as one of a few gifts to myself... I'm so happy that I did.
I may have a little bit of a paint addiction with well over 100 different paints, washes, inks and tints in my collection. However that vortex shaker mixes any paint most of the time in less than 5 seconds on the bottom and top of the dropper bottle. If they very thick or separated, then to fully mix them may take a little longer maybe up to 10 or 15 seconds for each side.
I simply love it. So worth the price in the shaking time saved and your arms will thank you if you had a bunch of paints you were going to use.
Just a heads up - that "hands feel weird after a while" is the first symptom for RSI, so possibly find a handheld item made of vibration absorbing materials to press against the paints if you plan on using the shaker regularly or for prolonged periods of time :)
Good plan. I cant see myself using it daily for ages though, I barely have time to paint 🤣🤣
@@BroadswordWargaming Glue the 3-pot holder to the shaker for hands-free triple shaking action.
whats rsi
@@mudawott repetitive straining injury - caused by repeated actions including vibrations :)
I actually rigged mine up with a velcro strap. I just strap the paint pot or bottle down and let it go for 5 to 10 minutes.
I am considering a paint shaker. Contrast paints require so much, especially if you haven used them in a while. Also, what it did with the texture paint was amazing!
I got a used Vortex Genie off Ebay cheap, like surplus lab equipment. It came with a round platform attachment rather than the "test tube" top you have on that mixer. It does a great job. Here's a trick I've been playing with, I used one of the citadel paint holders and rubber bands to shake 3 pots at once.
I'm with Luke on the paint shaker.I can't justify £100 great video though bud 👍
I bought one of these a while ago. Total game changer! If you search for a tattoo ink shaker, it's the same thing, but cheaper.
On those lonely nights I add mixing balls to all my old paints and get em flowing again haha
Or borrow the missus's best toy and hold the paint to that :]
I got a Intllab vm-370 off Amazon for around $30 US last September and it's very good.
I'm still in the starving artist/channel phase, so based on your recommendations and amazing video, I'm going to build a paper light box, put a spot for a paint pot inside of some maracas, and send the digital paint holder to a friend with a 3d printer! Thank you for reviewing these, it was super helpful and I'm excited to try to replicate a set of kludges.
Interesting video, that paint shaker does look good if a bit expensive. The new studio is looking great.
I cannibalized a Harbor Freight jigsaw and a cheap bar clamp for mine. Works great. Approx. $15 USD
Luke's was £20 off AliExpress... No idea how it'll perform, but it's much cheaper!
Absolutely works. It's sold to tatoo artists and is reasonably sturdy enough for the task. You dont need the calibrated medical labs one, that trend is fucking ridiculous. Just dont be a brute with it. And if ever it fails, it's a fifth / a fourth of the cost.
I love mine. It's an indulgence for sure, but if the money doesn't scare you they're great.
1:40 After i saw the pricing i simply used a..."toy" instead... works like a charm.
I got one similar, shaker works great it’s a good recommendation. I got the citadel paint holders that hold 18 pots it was on clearance sale, I usually put the paints I’m using in it stopped spillage. As far as the light box, I think you can make your own at home cheaper than 100 quid.
I agree with Luke. I went to Aliexpress and got a shaker for £33 :) however I do agree it is amazing and especially.good on army painter!
Literally bought one of these shakers yesterday and now there's a video on it! Great minds think alike.
Hah, good timing! 🙂
Not gonna lie, I expected to come here and take the mickey but two out of the 3 choices are actually pretty solid.....
I love my lightbox and whilst it is far from essential it's so damn easy and I will be honest I've been looking at one of those paint shakers for a little while now....
Great video bud!
I have a paint stand and it has saved me money even as a lowly casual hobbiest.
Good man. I think it'll save me some pennies too. 😀
I have the same shaker for about a year now and I cannot recommend it enough. Especially for washes, varnishes and contrast paints it is a real money and time saver! It even gets army painter to work properly - which is the biggest sales argument on its own. Plus: It works better than a customised jigsaw for mixing and its a hell of a lot less dangerous - believe me I've tried. I also tried the cheap nail polish shakers and they dont mix as well and break down easily...
We had these vortex shakers in uni. They had loads that the Calibration had failed. I asked if I could buy them cheap or even have them but they said no as they were going in the bin 🤦🏾
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
The dimmable lights are win if you ask me. In the cramped space where I take pictures sometimes I don't want the full intensity of the lights I have and I can only diffuse so much. The box is too big for my space though.
Nice video! I've got one of these. They work even better with the addition of a bead inside the paint pot. I think they're super helpful when you've got really viscous paints like scale 75, although paints do seem to benefit for being intermittently mixed by hand too. Not so much a painting need imo, but a nice luxury to have.
I was going to say that too. I use Army Painters stainless balls, 2 or 3 per pot seems to work best for me. Make sure that you don't get cheap or untrustworthy steel balls though, if they corrode they will ruin your paints. Better spending a pound or 2 more for safe agitators, than having to buy your paint collection again...
@@jherazob true, but I like the added weight of a steel ball. Hematite or glass will work too though, a lot better than no agitators.
Long experience with humbrol enamels has taught me that there is nothing better for resurrecting old paints than a bit of old sprue, stirring brings everything together much quicker than shaking, especially for thicker paints
Nail polish shaker works as well and cost 20 bucks on Amazon
All praise the Omnissiah for new tech gadgets!
I mean I know it’s a year later but I just bought one for 30 bucks US so not so bad especially if you hate sitting there and trying to shake your paints and getting nowhere
Blue tac is the best stuff when it comes to holding your pains in place, and it’s a heck of a lot cheaper.
Yeah, lots of work around 😀. The little stands only cost a few quid each though.
@Broadsword Wargaming where did you get the paint stands from? No link or manufacturer in the video’s description.
The paint shaker may be worth it. I wonder how it does on the cheap craft paints I use (worth researching some). If you're crafty, you can build yourself a better light box for the low low rather than purchasing one, but that's more preference than anything else (white / black foamboard with some LEDs work wonders). Nicely done video.
you can get a gel nail varnish agitator for between 20-30 quid that does as good a job and ever better if you put agitators in your paint/ use dropper bottles to avoid the paint getting sludgey.
get these paint stands so you can knock over 3 pots at once =). The paint shaker is a game changer though, for sure.
Haha. Nuln EVERYWHERE. Yeah, I love the paint shaker. It's so good.
The paint stands work best with all 3 paint slots filled in them - won’t flip up like at the end of the video when you knock them then. I use one for washes and one for contrast as I have spilled enough of both before I got them
Do you know who makes those stands?
@@ericdavis4964 games workshop
For lightboxes, I chose the Foldio 2.0, primarily because it folds up very nicely for storage. Like yours, it has 2 dimmable LED strips but I believe it is lacking a diffuser - however there are diffuser bars that clip over each LED strip.
Ah interesting! I've had a little more time to play with this now, and really like it!
I have (touch wood) been fairly lucky in that I have never knocked over a wash pot, but those rubber holders look decent. The paint shaker is one that I've been looking into for a while though.
Great video dude!
Thanks man! I'll show it off on Wednesday. 😅
You really want to test that shaker? Get your hands on some Warcolours One-Coats and see if it can produce a homogenous blue, violet, or purple. Good luck.
Huzzah you got one at last!
I did it, I caved. 🤣
I use a nail polish shaker, cheap and can strap it in and leave it
I just got a used vortex genie 2 off Ebay recently. Still works great and was only $65.
Nice!
I was gonna say I do use a mixer like the one you showed in the lab daily! 100% would work for paints. You may even get a better result if you put one of those ball bearings in the paint as well.
Hey sorry to bother you on a old comment but since you work in a lab with this sort of equipment I'm very curious about something. I started looking into these paint shakers and stumbled upon something that's called hand-transmitted vibration and the apparent damage it can cause to your hand and how this is considered a occupational hazard if you're working in a lab. So I was wondering (if you know) if you need to be careful at all when using the paint shakers?
@@YeemRAG I would say it's more of a problem for scientists really. The amount of mixing per day that we do in vs a hobby painter is off the chart. TLDR for a hobbiest I wont worry about it.
@@syd4890 Thanks!
I've got the model up from your paint shaker. Trust me, if you're buying a paint mixer, go for the 5400rpm model, it's £20 more than the model featured in this video but it's almost 2000rpm more than this model so it paints the shake faster and more thoroughly.
Nice!
Don't use a paint shaker that you have to hold the paint... Good way to develop white finger, which is caused by machinery that causes vibrations.
On camera the paint mixer reminds me of Flubber...
Ha, it does kind of look like that 🦠 Looks totally weird.
New studio is looking good! 👍
Thanks. 😊 Still lots to do, but wanted to do something thay would make me get on with it 🤣
@@BroadswordWargaming I've got to ask though, are those little round hanging lights obligatory? I mean they look good, don't get me wrong, but I've seen them in the background of a few UA-camrs setups now. Is there a WhatsApp group you all have where this stuff is agreed upon as the way?
@@Evo1veTT They just add a bit of colour I think. They have low wattage so can be "in shot" without blowing it out. I've got lots of greenery too, which I'm looking forward to playing with.
I like the idea of a huuuge youtube group about lights though 🤣
@@BroadswordWargaming I can vouch for IKEA plastic plants for dark corners, the upkeep is extremely easy too 😁
Don't forget leather bound books on a shelf make you look clever too!
Now, use the paint stand to hold 3 pots and mix three paints at once.
MEGA MIXER
@@BroadswordWargaming living in year 3000 isn’t easy.
Thank you , BroadSword .
Cheers Oli'
A Hundred Quid , like heckers like !
Great video. Those holders are a solid idea. I foresee many spills in my wife and I's adventures. This video was uploaded awhile ago but how does the paint mixer hold up? Does general wear and tear get to it or are you still using it?
I was ALWAYS spilling the pots.. no longer!
And yeah, it's still working the same as it did on day 1. 😀 I would recommend it 👌
that tesseract glow is such a pain of a paint for seperating... paint shaker... might need to get one of them.
rock
It's made it usable! 😀
Actual lab equipment costs the moon. Knock off equipment is cheap for a reason.
I use the back of my mouse mat as a povo 'black' background and prop it up on something so the background has no seams
What if you use that paint shaker on the end of your knob?
How loud is one of these?
I live in a house share and don’t wanna sound like I’m playing with vibrators in my room 😉
Haha. It's almost silent really. 😀 Silent vibrator. 🙃
just get a tattoo shaker.. same thing made for the job
and cheaper
I have the 3 paint pot holders it ok but I don't recommend opening all three at the same time
I use Faskolor, Pro-Line, Wicked, and Mission Model airbrush paints for my RC bodies and am looking to get a mixer. So would you recommend this over the Badger Paint Mixer?
I haven't used the badger personally, so I'd hate to say if it's better or not. I really like this one, but I'm sure lots do a similar job.
Nice paint selection BTW.
No one shakes harder than us yorkshiremen.
Shake it big boi!
A power drill & duct tape was too complicated? Didnt know these existed. Circle cutter bit preferably if possible.
I am not sitting around in my house with a power tool and tape everytime I want to shake a paint. Ha. I hate mess and the kid would drill her eye out because she's stupid. 😅
@@BroadswordWargaming Well played. Lol. Thanks for the review, see ya next time.
@@blackbarnz haha. You're welcome. 😀
Like and comment to appease the almighty algorithm 😁👍🏼
I'd like a paint shaker...but 100 pounds is too much. Maybe I'll try the one Luke found for 20 pounds...
Just watched Luke's video.
I think he was subtly mocking you. 😂
Was it subtle? Lol
Haha, I wouldn't expect anything else. 🤣
@@BullScrapPracEff welllll, noooo.
But I was trying to be subtle too. 😅
instead of the shit vortex, you can always ask any tatoo artist to name you a few of their suppliers. You can find the very same shaker for 15-20 euros
I got a mini vortex. I don't know how I lived without it. One of the best purchases I've ever made. I'm so glad I saw this video, saved tons of old paints! Thanks!
*still working great 3 months later*
Brilliant. Yeah, it's such a great tool to have. 😀
Yeah,.... paint stand seems mandatory
As I said to Luke on his video - you were robbed Ollie - as I bought one two years back via Amazon and it cost me £15.40p and it has a strap to put around the bottle, so it goes in/on sideways. No wise cracks Ciara, it was made for Nail Polish Vibration and it works a treat.
Ditto. I got a nail polish shaker, it has a rubbery strap that's fit my GW paints and Reaper/Vallejo bottles. 30ish bucks and has lasted me about a year now with no problems.
Yes! A new video!!!
💪
I belive those paint shaker were first made for tattoo artists. Then they made their way to the hobby world
Nope. They were made as lab equipment. However others have found them to be very useful for other uses outside of laboratory use.
I'm watching this video, looking at my Dremel tool and I'm thinking ..... Hhhhmmmmmmm
That would do the job. I've seen people use drills too 🤔
I've tried using my multi-tool, kinda worked but I could do with making an attachment to hold the pot properly.
Does every model painting streamer know each other?!
Haha, not quite.. but i'm just really good friends with Luke
Nobody needs an electric paint shaker if they don't use shitty citadel paints.
I dunno 🤔 I have Vallejo, Scale 75 etc too. I dont think I can even shake my scale ones, they just separate loads.
Duuuude that’s toooo much but I guess if you are painting
Lol double shake
How can I tell "the cheap" vortex from the real one? Apart from the price tag, I mean.
Generally, the cheaper ones break or aren't as effective. It's not always the case.. but Luke and I have spoken about them, and it seems his isn't as strong and he has a second one. 🤣
I like this one, but everyone has a difference of opinion on price v quality. 😀
What about new Kill Team report videos? I'd love to see Sean coming back to kick some ass!
They will be on their way, as soon as I can. Im in the new studio now, and I'm all set to go, unfortunately, Ireland is still in top level lockdown.. so as soon as thst ends, boom!
@@BroadswordWargaming Cant wait!
here is your interaction comment
you sound like stewie from family guy
Wait.... People told you, you NEED a lightbox?!
Well, that was very much recommended. Having the studio, it's a little different for me, but it is good for taking flat background pics. 😀 Good if you don't have the ability to light models well, as that's normally why pictures look bad.
Is it noisy?
No, not at all, it's really quiet
@@BroadswordWargaming dont want to upset the neighbours innit
Might it be used as a s..toy ? 😁
One hundred t'quid 😂😂😂
Haha, got to take t' piss once in a while
I always thought he was from Lancashire 😂😉
I've owned two types of paint shakers and I'm going to be honest they are worthless Paint shaker balls are way better.
Does any hobbyist need a paint shaker ? Once your paint collection is over 20 pots, absolutely (for all the reasons you mentionned). Do you need the 100 quids one recommended for medical labs ? FRACK NO ! The 20-25 one sold to tatoo artists is absolutely enough, does the same job, works as well. And both are reasonably sturdy they can last long unless you have decided on making bench press with them. Just don't be a brute squishing your pot over that rubber covered oscillating motor, neither of these models will like it. And if ever the cheapie one fails, it's only A FIFTH of thecost of the expensive one !
Love the short format, it's to the point, hope it performs well for you :)
I love the hobby shaker. Still going strong a few years later. 💪 Well said!
What is this new fangled heretical machinery
I know.. it's madness.
99.99 for something I could do it with my hands? Thank you bro, but no!
