Do you prefer taking off and landing while decoupled or coupled? Let me know below! I switch back and forth from time to time. But I mostly prefer coupled while landing, unless I'm doing dropship work.
For mouse and keyboard users, the limiter is king for making sure your ship doesn't look super jittery as you used the WASD inputs since the limiter will automatically scale back thruster output as the speed gets closer to the actual set limit. This means you can hold the keys down while not blasting off at high speed into a wall. You can utilize decoupled mode for more control but this can be tricky if you are not already experienced with decoupled flight.
Already a pro at take off and landings? Be sure to share your own tips and tricks below with other viewers.
See you all in the next one.

Decoupled landing feels a little better personally, but you have to pull the landing gear out sooner in atmo so you can maintain vector and coast in without constantly having to throw a bunch of inputs to remain level. In space though? Cake.

Decoupled mode for landing gets marks against cinematic quality since you have to pull the landing gear out so early for it to be useful. I think it's hands-down the best way to land in vertical hangars though, since you can place your TVI and then spacebrake to slow down as you reach the pad.

When im doing things where i dont want to risk my cargo like hauling in my msr i'll used coupled because i need to focus more on the weight of my ship rather than the the style of the landing (MSR really needs better maneuvering thrusters) but if im in my defender and just flying around maybe coming back after a bounty i might sometimes try decoupled

Just get your gear down, decouple, place the TVI toward where you want to land and adjust speed as needed with space brakes.
It works like a charm in space and atmo.
When your gear is down, the ship will resist gravity in atmo, or in space above a pad and in the hangar.

One thing i found helpful is being able to easily change the throttle output instead of the speed limiter, its pretty satifify to watch a ship lift off when its only using enough thrust to overcome gravifty.
also: minor idea from watching these and previous video of take offs and landings as abit of friendly competition:
Gather 5-10 people that you can record taking off/landing, using the same ship. have a group of judges or the contestants themselves watch each one (not knowing who is who) and give them a rating of their own. who ever has the highest average rating wins the internet points or something.

My favorite way to land in a vertical hanger is using the first half of a Split S turn transitioning into a hover landing. It has a ton of advantages and it has been fantastic when I've done it all correctly, so I'm trying to master it.
    - You can place your TVI without undesirable nose-down-nose-up direction reversal hindering controllability
    - The pad travels across your field of view at nearly the perfect time for aligning your ship and placing your TVI
    - Visibility in most ships is way better out the top so you have a larger viewing range and time in which to place the TVI
    - It works quite well even in ships that don't have the maneuvering thrust to hover upside down
    - It positions your powerful VTOL thrusters in the direction of stopping your "forward" and "downward" velocities at the right times
    - It boils down to being a more aerodynamic and fluid way to do the completely vertical nose-down landing

    @Baleur Рік тому +3

For M&KB users, combat landings / takeoff, i recommend keeping speed limiter at max all the time (no joke).
You always want full thrust available. And you DONT want proximity assist on, as it will sometimes bug out and be permanently stuck on. So how do you get smooth landings?
You learn, practice, so you know how far you coast after you release W, at a given speed.
That way you dont need to lower the speed limiter, because you're already coasting in smoothly, using speedbrake to adjust if coming in too fast, then letting off the brake again.
So for example, if you're at 12km from the pad or hangar, and you're going at 1km/s (we dont kid around here, kid), and you KNOW it takes 11km to come to a complete stop WITH speedbrake (and not turning and boosting, just straight forward flight), then you dont ever need to touch the speed limiter or even be worried.
You just line it up, release W (or cruise control) and coast in all the way, tapping speedbrake to adjust, NEVER touching W again.
If you had to use W to reach the pad, you know you were too conservative, and next time you start braking at 10km instead.
Once you get good with this, you can come in for maximum speed landings, ending in gentle 5m/s touchdowns with a nice slide to end it.
Trust me, it is MUCH better for your long-term skills as a pilot to do it this way, the hard way, the "manual" way.
The speed limiter really only puts a cap on your development as a pilot. It is far too slow to be useful in combat scenarios or if you need to get out fast.
You want 100% thrust available within 1sec, and you just cant do that with the extremey sluggish nature of the "slider".
This is why some people get away when an A2 drops a bomb or an Ares opens up its BRRT when you're landed, and some people DONT get away.
    That 1 second matters.
It's the person who gets to 1km/s 90 degrees into the air faster that survives.
And that will never, ever happen, if you keep adjusting the speed limiter.

  • @Brunnen_Gee
    @Brunnen_Gee Рік тому +3

Curves help greatly with this, and precise flying in general. Much easier compared to messing with the limiter all the time and trying to hit specific numbers with it to keep things consistent (something I never touch other than SCM toggle). After that it's really just practice, and stick time or whatever other method of flight one uses. Eventually you'll get better at it, without specifically trying to. It'll come natural.
I'm a big advocate of always flying in first person. One because it's just preference, every ship is totally able to be flown and set down anywhere you want once you get used to its dimensions. Second main reason is eventually the way 3rd person currently works is going to go away, and it won't be able to be used as the landing crutch many use it for now. Landing HuD is in the works now, I can't wait for that.
I know you like your cinematic landings with the gear coming down right before setting the ship down. Personally I do it a bit sooner, not quite as early as what's done in real life, but sooner, just because some gear animations are a lot longer than others, and when you fly a variety of ships regularly, it's easy to get things mixed up. In real life however, gear comes down _much_ sooner, often miles out. Cinematic/Hollywood and reality usually aren't the same thing. Dropping landing gear so close to landing is the last thing you'd want to do. (I have an aviation background so I prefer to do things a little closer to life.)

Here's my recipe. Been doing this ever since 3.14 or so.
I don't just go in and go down. I go in close to one wall, gear's coming out while I go into a smooth curve towards the opposite wall, align about center, then land - 45°ish diagonally - on the pad. I found my OCD's screaming every time I try to snipe the center with 0° angle alignment because aside from Autoland, that's just both extremely hard and more importantly, super boring. Diagonal alignment feels much more natural and cinematic.
For launching, I intentionally give some gentle roll going up. Gentle roll left going up, before reaching apex, gentle counterroll right. If gear's not already retracting, now it is. Going out, I pitch down ever so gently, like you'd expect a Harrier Jet to "lean" forward to accelerate.
So. If you ever see someone do that type of landing or launch - hi.

If you don't use Dual Sticks it is nearly impossible to do soft landings in couple mode.
Easiest and soft way to land with HOTAS ist the decouple mode. If you start, just wait raising the landing gear. Raise it if you fly forward and change from decouple to couple. So you can start very smooth in atmosphere.
And if you want to land: Decouple on and lower the landing gear. Correct you flight path with the thrusters and brake. Touch down...
Or wait until CIG release the Trimm Option for decouple flight in atmosphere. :-)

A method i like to use in space is to drop my gear early before you enter the hangar and come in decoupled. You get lined up as as you come in you slowly press reverse (i use pedals but any kind of axis will work). These landings are not too flashy but they are as smooth as silk when done right.

An issue I've run into with limiter control is that the increments are very dependent on your FPS, so with potato PCs (like mine), on stations you can easily fine tune but places like Lorville have massive jumps in increments...
Also a tip to improve touchdowns is to take note of your ship's true flat pitch when landed and not actually rely on the zero degree mark. For example the Cutter's is -5 degrees, so landing at 0 would mean the rear gear touches down first and slams the nose down. It helps avoid nose gear touchdowns and better pull of flat touchdowns.

  • @RykrXky
    @RykrXky Рік тому +2

Great video but is this for mouse and Keyboard? Cause if this is for dual sticks, there's a much more efficient way to do it.
The best for Cinematic and smooth landings is using Decoupled and pulling landing gear out a little earlier. Landing gear locks your vector so you will not drop out of the sky despite being decoupled, use that in combination with airbrakes and you can land like a feather.
Also for takeoffs, as others said using the thrust limiter instead of speed limiter in a way that youre giving just enough thrust to lift the ship looks more realistic but takes a lot more skill so can be tough for beginners.

lol i love that you show us these beautiful landings and say "its not that hard, just practice." i have a hard enough time doing that with a 3rd person view that gives me full view, let along a dramatic camera angle.
that said, im a sucker for those landings, too. i fly back and forth from 18 to hur l5 running scrap, and ive gotten so used to the trip i can line up on 18 (after a 180 down and flying under the hangar) in third and wont look in 1st till im spooled to jump. i guess that's practice lol😅
FYI: that ending takoff synced up with the music. Nicely done. 👍

My favorite way to land on pads with gravity (planets or moons) is to get over the pad, drop the gear and then slowly reduce my “thrust output limiter” and the spacecraft with start to sink. This is opposed to strafing downward with full thruster output applied. The way this works is by limiting thruster output, the bottom thrusters, which are keeping you aloft and/or hovering, will not have the necessary output needed and you start to sink/descend. I have mine bound to my left stick, pinky lever as an axis on my dual-stick setup.

One thing i will say if you are new star citizen player who has decided that they love the game, get yourself a Hotas or better yet a hosas, it doesnt need to be a mega expensive one like VKB or virpil (although if funds allow i would, the quality difference is something to behold and it does make you better at flying compared to cheaper sticks) and then get yourself some form of head tracking, Tobii 5C is the best for SC, but for all round use in other games the Track ir 5 is the one to go for (or one of the cheaper alternatives like delan clip etc)

With larger ships; I like to level off right above the hangar and switch to external camera. Position it directly above the ship and use the center lines to guide yourself in with gentle thruster inputs. So long as you stay level, it works well.
Edit - You can make the transition from cockpit to external camera relatively unnoticeable as you level off if you save the external camera position (beforehand) by holding F4 + Numpad 0-9 button after the camera is in the right position. I use F4 + Numpad 4 for Top Down Center View & F4 + Numpad 5 for centerline rear landing gear view. Good luck citizen!

clearly you have never seen me land. if you had, you would award my landings of multiple ships with the award for best landing of an space ship in stanton - that is how soft and smoothly i land. and it doesn't matter what ship i land either - i fly a reclaimer like it's a humming bird and i fly a medical c8r like it's lightening. you don't even want to see me land a cutlass red - you will simply be blinded by the lights of glory. also, great video. several times ive followed someone to a hangar to watch them take off. many get nervous thinking i want to steal their ships but all im ever interested in is knowing if there are others of my kind. those who land spaceships as softly, and smoothly, as i do.
Edit: your take offs and landings are okay to mediocre.

I've always made good use of decoupled mode for all my landings, it's almost always smooth and it feels good lool. I do sometimes have my landing gear out juust before reaching the actual hangar's shield just cuz it.. er- "ignores gravity" on planets and moons. Keeps me in a constant direction that I want to go towards and I only need to make small adjustments.

I think gear down just auto enables the gravity resist function of the “flight computer,” which you can also enable/disable via keybind.
It does use up some of your thruster budget, but since you’re landing that doesn’t really matter as you’re not using full thrust anyway

I can't do an accident free horizontal vertical hanger landing with my Caterpillar. I always end up having to do a 45 degree nose in landing then level out inside the hangar. The issue is not only the ships length but the docking booms that extend out in front of the ship. The Caterpillar is issue the second largest hangar so it ends up with less than a meter of front to back clearance. Horizontal positioning is very hard to impossible by mark 1 eyeball due to the deceptive nature of scale and angle of viewing. Still, I frequently try to practice horizontal landing with the Caterpillar but I always end up tagging the docking booms or engines on the hangar entry frame though I rarely damage the ship and never crash.

I think its worthwhile to turn off the "Flight - Proximity Assist Defaults On" option in the Game Settings as well. This prevents the game from trying to help you slow down when near objects, like when you're in a hanger. The problem with this in a hanger is that it puts power to thrusters that arent needed, which can cause you to slam into the back of a hanger if you're going too fast. With it off, you have much better control inside the hanger.

  • @jaide1312

I keep it decoupled and with the speed limiter turned off as my default, for landings I make sure to have my gear down before I enter the hangar, and only raise it after I exit because of the dumb gravity thing. I just give my upward thrust a light tap to get off the ground, then send it. For landings, use the spacebrake to slow down to a crawl, then give down thrust a tap to elegantly set it down.
