Why Padlock is an awesome feature you should be using | Star Citizen
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2021
- Padlock is a simple function that is common in many other simulation games like DCS and IL-2. What it does is tracks your view onto your target automatically and holds it. Giving you better overall situational awareness when in a dogfight. It can be a great substitute for those that do not have hardware trackers like TrackIR, Tobii, or FOIP. In this video, we'll talk about how to enable it at all times and how to enable it via keybinds. As well as briefly discussing the pros and cons.
Check out me and my buddy's work on the Star Wars: Fallen Angel short film! Thanks to all of you who supported us in the fan-favorite category!

Edit: If you want to see Padlock in action. Check out my previous M50 dogfighting video where I am exclusively using it. This will give you a better idea of how well it works and if you feel like the feature is right for you.

Padlocking is an under apprieciated feature that is built into Star Citizen. It is not perfect, but for those of you that want to get a bit more situation awareness out of your dogfights but lack hardware trackers. Then this may be a solution for you. Again, I highly recommend you utilize this with the keybind as it allows you to switch off and on padlock at will. Especially, if it does anything wonky or it feels like more of a hinderance due to bugs or any other issues.
Have you already tried it out yet? Let me know what you think of it!
I can't get it to work on 3.21.1, any advice?
Ive played star citizen for 7 years.
I never knew they added this.
And i got a well tuned look-ahead setup, tuned over several months.
NEVER knew about Padlock. Holy shit. This is a game changer.
I never knew SC had this. So many games that really could do with it skip this feature. yess. Thanks for the heads up Hybrid. instant subscribe for that.
One that CIG is seriously doing right is all of the character controls, my favorite that I wish every game would start doing is using the scroll wheel to adjust walk/run speed, I hate first person RPGs where you don't have good control over your characters movement speed now, its such a little thing that makes the experience so much more immersive.
Almost every game has this built into the keybinds. CIG is just incompetent and there’s no way to do it in their alpha without this ridiculous feature.
Wow, this sounds incredibly useful.
I'm surprised I've never heard of this before.
Good video and a great tip for those like myself who need every bit of help in PvP we can get.
And congratulations on your win.
These types of single feature video are what we really need a lot of. Fully explaining what some of these settings do.
Thanks for actually putting something with new information on here. A lot of times you just see most of the channels put out the same information everyone else has or already knows. It's nice to see someone looking into the details.
All these years go by still so many undiscovered features. Thanks for the tips!
Used to have a different name, but I'm an enormous fan. Glad you took the time to make a vid on the updated version. Grats on the competition win, too! XD
Target view, or something.
Something like that, @@Jamie-666 . Yep. :) I made liberal use of it. :)
Totally giving this a try. Thanks for bringing attention to this hidden gem of a feature.
Thank you. That was very informative. I didn't even know what Pad Locking was until now. Thank you.
SC continues to blow my mind. Hardware head tracking via webcam built in? I must try this and Padlocking!
Great advice thanks. I'll give it a try.
Congratulations on your short film!
3 videos in and your answering all the question I have and ones I didn't even know I did.
Your are now my official instructor into the verse.Amazing
Wow, I've been playing on and off since 2015 till now (Oct 2023) and never knew about this feature or when it got added!
I came across this video accidentally when searching for head tracking with webcam on Star Citizen. Thank you so much for showing this!
one of the Best content about SC on YT. Super quality and always 100% Matching ! Thanks for the work implied ! 😀
Thx for giving me the hint with padlock. Will give i a try.
Excellent video! You explained a (IMHO valuable) feature, demonstrated it's use and offered advice for alternatives, all in a well produced and concise format. Kudos sir!
neat feature, I wasn't even aware of it. I'll experiment with the keybound approach. Also it's worth mentioning that simply having freelook on a mouse button goes pretty far, without the drawbacks of an automated system.
Great and timely video. Just setting up the new X56 Hotas and wanted to do this without having to always use a Hat on the joystick
Tobii 5 eye/head tracking is also available and beats both methods you mentioned. You can eye track or head track or both track. All we need is CIG to turn on FOIP capability for it, and it will be even more accurate than a camera even.
You had me at "off boresight missiles". Can't wait to use AIM-9X's in SC
man, Ive been playing this game for ages now and Ive never heard of this feature. Thanks for sharing
So excited to do off boresight missile locks.
I use my phone for hear tracking, via smoothtrack ($10) and opentrack (free). I've never tried Track IR so I can't compare it to a dedicated system, but it works great for me. For faster tracking, use gnirehtet (free) to use your phone over usb rather than wifi. The cam on your phone is already far superior to almost any webcam. Why not use it?
Never knew they added this! Great info, thanks so much!
Have to toss it out set this yesterday and it improved my shot ratio and accuracy a good 20%. Feels very smooth thanks for the vid brother.
I have Tobii (nothing beats it) but these features in SC are awesome and work really well if you calibrate everything to your liking (easier to do than in most games)
VR beats it
Track IR is just as good. if not better if you sit closer to your monitor. Both are a great option if you have the money. I have both and prefer track IR
Ah, mine enemy reveals thyself! haha@@FindtheShrooms
@@xHideousFoxx Enemy? I'm confused.
was just joking, since you prefer TrackIR@@FindtheShrooms
I just found this video on google. Holy immersion, batman. Subscribed.
This is such an awesome presentation!
Wow had no idea this feature existed. Thanks. I'll be sure to keybind it next time I play.
Many thanks!! I’ll try it tonight~ And congrats on your cinematic short award!
That was really cool. Thanks for posting.
wow great!! This is what T was looking for!!! Thank you
Wow, I never knew that SC had this feature. This would make combat quite a bit easier! Thanks for informing the community
Been with the project a while now and never heard of this feature. Nice work!
nice, I turned target tracking off because it was obnoxious, but being able to do it at will would be very useful. One of these days I'll be able to afford joysticks and trackir...
Dang, thanks for the info, I had no idea this was a thing and will 100% use it.
I've seen the option a dozen times but never knew what it did. great video
Informative, clear, concise. Great video, wish more people would make guides this well
Nice piece, and Congrats to you and Alex on the win!
What's old is new again! I remember padlock from early-90s flight sims like Falcon 3. This is certainly a more natural implementation, though.
Excellent video, succinct with a very good explanation of the tech. Much appreciated. I look forward to seeing more of your stuff!
bruh ive been wondering how ace pilots track enemies like this for awhile now this is so useful in pvpve cheers man
Good to see you venge, I am glad to see you still up and active. :>
I just found this video. Thank you so much for sharing this. It has helped me a lot.
Had no idea this was a feature. I will be selecting it as a keybind for easy access in game.
Yooooo this is so useful, definitely gonna be using this feature!
This is a fantastic video! I didn't even know this feature was in the game. I'd love to see more videos like this!
BROOOOO! I have been trying to figure out what setting this is to turn it off since I have started playing!! Thank you so much.
Hey great vid. Not many people have mentioned this feature. Have used it in other sims and it works great. I have trackir on one rig and although a bit cumbersome (having to wear hat or head piece) it works excellent but recently set up another system without Trackir so this is a God send. Going to use the auto and a joystick key binding for this feature as suggested. Like how it breaks lock when enemy gets out of view. The one thing I didn't know about was that you can use the FOIP as a form of head tracking. I've seen the FOIP function for face movement recognition before but good on CIG to make it usable as a head tracker. Everyone has a little camera kicking around. Awesome.
Fantastic introduction to a few features I hadn’t been using.
I never knew this was a thing in SC. Thanks for the tip! I have trackIr as well, but haven't used it for SC yet.
Super useful and complete!
The way venge said hello hahahaha!
awesome tip man. waiting on a set of gladiator nxt's and i cant wait to really get in to star citizen.
Damn I didn’t even know that was a thing. This is very informative thank you
Will give this a go! Thanks for sharing :)
Definitely gonna try this today!
Nice overview! I didn't know this was a thing and it could be handy when I don't have my TrackIR hooked up (which is most of the time)
Excellent vid for a tech barbarian like me! ty!!
I use TrackIR, but wasn't familiar with this feature. Thanks for sharing
Missile tracking is amazing! Best set PAD to hold like console Ace Combat games.
Wow, did not know this feature. Super Mega useful for getting missile locks, too.
Ooo I had no idea this existed - thank you :)
Wow thanks you so much for this earned a new sub I had no idea this was a feature!!
Congratulations 🎉👏👏
I didn’t know about this feature and got my self a Tobii 5 two days ago 😅
Don't regret it!!
Great pro tip. Thanks.
I never knew this was a thing, def will give it a try next time I fly. I have Tobii but I don't always use it as I personally have rather sensitive eyes an at times find it a bit fatiguing, we might not /see/ infrared but it is still a lightwave.
That's handy to know. Thanks!
Thanks for the info. I didn't know this info.
dude is literally doing the whole tutorial INSIDE the game
Very informative, thank you o7
EXCELLENT VIDEO!
Awesome...had no idea this was a thing...
thank you for the video, this can be usefull in pvp.
FoIP worked flawlessly for you! Any tips to make it run as smooth as yours?
Doing it, loving it
Back for a refresher
Does the built in FoIP work for face tracking or do I need additional Software?
FOIP face tracking feature will work with any webcam. SC will detect it and ask for permission to use it.
@@HybridVAudio nice :)
That is an awesome feature. I am certainly going to try it out. Would love to get a cam or a tracker soon.
I've been using FOIP to do this, but it's a little janky with a webcam and glasses, I had no idea this was even a thing and will definitely be using it from here on out.
I haven't liked pad locking. I feel it takes away from my ability to fly. When your forced to look at you target it can hide obstacles like asteroids.
I'll probably give padlocking a try, but this is an issue I thought of as well. I've been using free look keep track of targets or obstacles.
You can quickly toggle it on/off to look forward.
Good bid, subbed
where I failed was not binding a key for this feature. I turned it off right away when a target flew by me in an asteroid field and couldnt see where i was going lol. ill give it a shot after the 3.15 patch i dont feel like rebinding everything again
Thanks for the info
So useful
I know I am very late to this video, but I would love to know what camera/settings you are using to get that super smooth face/headtracking with FOIP
Great tip
Also Tobii does head (And eye) tracking.
Great video
well it sure *looks* nice and neat but I see a perfect way to go tunnel vision as well...
remember: you most likely don't wanna lose the abylity to check quickly your ship's status and data.
Wow thank you. Padlock works great with Foip, but without foip its sorta dizzying. I did not know you can use a regular webcam for foip. So we don't have to use / buyTobii eye tracker 5. So many UA-camrs are pushing this product. Thank you for an honest alternate video. Sceptical about shooting IR into my eyeballs for hours a day anyway!
nice vid, quick question, do you have a video on how to set up FOIP for flight and what FOIP camera and settings give the best results?
Took me so long to figure out what look ahead is and how to turn it off :D I hate it so much
Pardon for sounding dumb, or not having had 100% of the attention required, but: "Would this make sense to use if you have headtracking with Tobii eyetracker as well? Is there some extra functionality that comes with this if you're already using headtracking with Tobii?" @Hybrid V Audio
Good question. All padlock does put the target centre screen. You could theoretically use Tobii/TrackIR for slow-moving targets, as all you're doing with these is moving your head relative to 0,0 on screen co-ords. Fast targets would be a mess. It'd be nice to have the option, however.
Analytics!
Now I just need my game to not crash before I get to any of the action, lol.
Back in 2016 vr was supposed to be implemented, which is the same, just better
I always turn all head movements off, it is supper weird for me, and no i don't have hardware to track, just watching your vid demonstrating, i already got weird. xD
