- For this video I am going to be unboxing the latest Arrow Video 4K Blu-ray Collector's Edition Steelbook of Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves and I will also share my thoughts on the 4K transfer.
Loves this since I saw it with my two best friends at the cinema when I was about 12. Remember how all the film critics and snobs criticised it for being unrealistic. Yeah cause the Errol Flynn one they all loved, that was so authentic! 🤣😂
I also remember the critics slamming it myself. I remember thinking at the time what movie were they watching. I think it has everything you could possibly want for a movie like this. Great chemistry between characters. Some amazing action set pieces and some great comedic moments. Thankfully it has a big fan base now and rightly so
The best version of Robin Hood is the 1983/84 TV series from the now defunct Goldcrest production company. I did enjoy this for what it was, a fun swashbuckling ride. And Rickman was the best thing about it. But it's not Robin Hood.
I must say I am surprised to hear so many people from the U.K. love this movie. I would think they'd hate it for Costner's American accent.
Hey Eric. I'm actually Irish so it doesn't really bother me. I know Kevin costner's accent is not the greatest but it's still a fun movie

Hey Chris. This is the only Robin Hood movie I've ever seen. It's a personal favourite of mine and arrow Video have done a wonderful job on it. I think you'll be very happy with it when you get it through the door

Hey Keith. What a great film. Saw this at the cinema. Loved it. Was only 14 so I didnt see any of its minor flaws. People complained about an American Robin Hood but I didnt care. Alan Rickman was brilliant.
Even bought the single on cassette. Lol. Remember those.

Yeah I was able to look past the flaws of this movie as well. Some people just love to nip pick unfortunately. Alan Rickman is fantastic in this movie and like I said he just knows how to play the villain roles so well. I had the single on cassette myself. Looks like a great set once again by Arrow. I pre-ordered from Amazon a similar 4k set but only with the standard case. Really like this movie as well, one of my favourites from the 90's. I wish someone would do a 4k release of The Adventures of Robin Hood with Errol Flynn. A childhood favourite and for some reason it's a great watch around Christmas. Great video Keith.
Believe it or not Sebastian but I have never seen another Robin Hood movie. I don't know if it's one of those things where I love this movie so much that it's almost stopping me from watching any other Robin Hood movie. But I trust your opinion and I will definitely check out the Adventures of Robin Hood and I especially like the way you mentioned that it's great to watch around Christmas. Good to see a good 4k transfer after a few bad ones. I agree Keith, that painted effect looks great and I like the heroes and villains asymmetric design. Alan Rickman is just born to be a bad guy.

The late Alan Rickman was the highlight of this film for me as the Sheriff Of Nottingham
He really was fantastic in this movie as he was in everything he was in. Such a sad day when we lost him

@@millerman9991 just received it. Now I opened it I notice I didn't pay attention enough to your review. There's a steelbook inside this box. Normally it's just a plain amaray case. This makes this boxset more special than let's say Robocop or Donnie Darko. The steelbook finishes this edition and was my online gripe with this beautiful Arrow boxsets.
Wow that must have been a hell of a surprise when you opened it. It's a beautiful looking Steelbook as well and it really does complete this edition. I never picked up RoboCop or Donnie Darko because I already had the limited edition Blu-ray releases and I can't bring myself to buying almost identical releases. Arrow Video should stop doing that
It's a lovely 4k limited edition steelbook set of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves with great artwork on the box and steelbook as well. I've got the standard 4k limited edition set coming this week.

Another great review Keith out of all the different versions of robin hood films that i have seen i enjoy this version the most i think Morgan Freemon and Kevin Costner play off each other very well, but Allen Rickman as the villain steels the show.
Believe it or not James but it's the only robin hood movie I've ever seen. I love this movie so much I think it's almost stop me from watching other movies. I absolutely agree with you when it comes to Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman and there is some great chemistry between the two of them. Alan Rickman really knows how to play a great villain. No I never seen that either. I'm not kidding the only Robin Hood movie I have seen is this one. I have been told by a few people to check out Ridley Scott's movie and I think I might do it in the new year. I'm a big fan of Ridley Scott and I really need to check it out
@@millerman9991 Ridley Scott's is probably the more historically appropriate version if robin hood was real, but robin of Sherwood is seen as the best interpretation, I do like the film, even though it gets flack , Sean Connery got a quarter million for his scene and it was uncredited, actually prefer it to the Scott version but they are both great films
Just out of curiosity can you buy Robin of Sherwood on Blu-ray. If so I will pick it up

The new bluray release is the one I went for. The artwork is beautiful, like a Drew Struzan poster, and the amaray case has the original poster art on the reversible slip, so it looks amazing.

It's a lovely set Keith, but due to having problems with Zavvi, I picked up the set minus the steel book. Great review as usual Keith 👍
Hey John. You know me I'm not the biggest fan of zavvi but I had to give credit when credits due because the packaging was incredible on this release. It came in a big cardboard box and plenty of bubble wrap. Maybe Zavvi are starting to change their ways. I seriously doubt it though
This film should have been given the Atmos Treatment

Honestly Roy it never dawned on me to check to see if the Blu-ray was the same release that we got before. Cannot believe I actually forgot that. Something's telling me it might be a new transfer as well. I couldn't imagine arrow putting that terrible Blu-ray into this edition. I will definitely look into it for you. This is a really nice boxset Keith, it's got a rustic look about it. This film is a great version of Robin Hood, I call it Hollywoods popcorn version, great set pieces on a 40+ million budget, which for 1991 wasn't bad. I remember back in 91 I was living in Cornwall, me and some guys from work we're all going to meet up on Falmouth beach to make our version of Brian Adams music video. Only two of us turned up but we still made it. All I can say that it was one of the funniest things things we ever filmed, the video was bloody aweful, it was out of sinc with the music, and my friend Rodney tripped over walking along the rocks with the sea spashing up behind him. This film brings back some great memories for me. Nice upload Keith, thank you.
Hey Gary. I don't suppose that video that you made with your friend Rodney is part of the special features in this edition by any chance because it sounds like a laugh. It would probably be the best feature on it. I have fond memories of this movie myself and like you said the Edition itself looks fantastic particularly that rustic look. Very strange that the music video for Bryan Adams song is not in the features. Instead we got a performance that he done in Slane which is only 15 minutes away from me. I remember that day well. @@millerman9991 I wish I still had the video unfortunately it got lost down the years. So you're right next door to Slane, I've never been to Ireland but from what I've seen it has some of the most beautiful countryside in the world, and the castles look amazing. I'm in Luxembourg at the moment, I'm here for 3 months visiting with my wife, its a clean and tidy country but boring. Maybe one day I will visit Ireland and Scotland, never been to either, how bad is that.

Hey Keith, just a quick one, have you seen a movie called Detachment, from 2011, with Adrien Brody, it's a gem of a movie, very well acted and it really gets you emotionally involved. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

Hey John. I have to admit I was impressed with the packaging from zavvi on that Robin Hood edition. It was in a big cardboard box and there was plenty of bubble wrap as well. Very surprising for zavvi. Hopefully they've changed there ways

I was actually meant to thank you for the shout out as well. I really appreciate that. Maybe its the high gloss finish on the Steelbook that was causing the issue and why my had had so many scratches on it. It's very strange I've never heard of that happening before

I have my eye on both of them. I can't remember the last time I seen the last emperor and I never seen the sisters Brothers but I've heard great things about it and I know it has a fantastic cast.
The good thing with Arrow is they're points club. I picked both these up for £35 . Never seen The Last Emporer and like you, I've only heard of good things from the sisters brothers. But 4K needs more westerns , esp with Scream factorys announcement of the Magnificent 7 recently 👏👏👏. There are so many films that need a HQ 4K. Like The Last Samuri, The Kingdom of Heaven D.C. Zulu, We were soldiers , and instead they bring out weaker titles like R.I.P.D, don't get me wrong it was a good film but they're are better films out there that deserve to be put on 4K first. I just love the work that the boutique labels are doing for the market inc Arrow & 2ND sight from home and those 3 or 4 big boutiques stateside

In mine, the opening dungeon scene is so dark you can barely tell what's going on, it really put me off and made me kinda prefer the old bluray, which I gave away once I got this.
I also don't think the picture quality is all that great either. It looks better than the old blu-ray, but I didn't think it was that good.
In mine the audio mixing was also weird, I had a hard time hearing some of the dialogue, and it seemed to be quieter than the music and sound effects.
I mentioned the same scene in the video when it comes to the dungeon at the start of the movie. Way too dark and it happened a few times during the transfer. But the picture quality is a huge upgrade over that horrible Blu-ray that we got before. All you have to do is look at the colours and that will tell you everything. It's not going to win any awards for best looking 4K transfer but it gets the job done
@@millerman9991 Yeah I've seen a consensus that the visual quality and colors are much better, but I wasn't as blown away as I was expecting. But my TV doesn't have HDR, so that might be a reason why.
@fuzzypanda1684 that will definitely play a huge role when it comes to your enjoyment of this 4K release. I think if you do see it in HDR you might feel very differently about it
I don't like the fact that there is an 8 dollar tracking fee that u do not have the option to remove I wait til US puts it out F them
Yeah Zavvi seem to have up their delivery charge. Thankfully I actually had this pre-order before they changed it so I was able to get this for only €3 delivery. There's no way I can buy a standard release from them and pay €6 delivery. Another reason to stay away
OUCH... sorry to see your steelbook got damaged Keith. Big dent right on the spine and you could see it from the front image as well.

Fantastic review Keith I picked up the same version well chuffed with it now sold out. Michael Kamen score is phenomenal throughout. I'm a big fan of the movie Alan Rickman is amazing in this film. The 4k PQ is great there is grain in the dark scences but who cares the DV really helps the colours. Pity no dolby atmos keep your eyes on Germany lol.
Hey Phil. I didn't realise it was actually sold out on Zavvi. It kind of makes this release that little bit more special in a way. I'm a massive fan of this movie as I'm sure you can tell by my video and it's great to see that it's finally got the treatment it deserves. Whether it's the packaging or the 4K transfer. Yes it is a grainy transfer but Robin Hood was always a rough movie to look at. I found it to be an incredibly faithful transfer and I wouldn't have it any other way. I wouldn't be one bit surprised if I did see it appear on Germany with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack and I'll be there to buy it if it does. Thank you so much for stopping by Phil. Tbh Keith, I do prefer the Scott free 2011 version of R H. And was unsure whether to upgrade RHPOT. Omg I'm so glad I did, Arrow have done a 10/10 with this transfer for me, as for the whole set its out of this world, 1 of the most gorgeous artworks of a steelbook, along with The Godfathers, The Fog & Army of Darkness. Totally loved The extended cut.
Hey Gareth. I was told by so many people to watch that Ridley Scott movie and I'm definitely going to give it a go in the new year. I'm a massive Ridley Scott fan and I really should check it out. From the sounds of things you are as happy as I am with Arrows efforts on this release. You have to give them credit when credit due because they do put in a lot of work. The packaging is amazing. The 4K transfer is stunning and so many incredibly good features as well. I'm still looking to pick up the fog and army of Darkness steelbooks. Just waiting for the right time. @millerman9991 hi Keith. They're a lot of people that didn't like it or rate it as highly as it deserves imo, esp on review sites. It starts with Richard de couer with his army in France. It has a great cast inc the brilliant now late William Hurt, , Scott Grimes, Max Von Sydow, just to name a few. Great action scenes and a killer soundtrack. I got it for a tenner. One of my 1st buys into the 4K market. And 1 I watch prob every 6-8 months.
My only gripes with Arrow is that they're owned by Zavvi. So 50/50 with customer service on average. In my cases recently in the last year its more 70/30 on the negative. But they're q.c aftercare on the 4K discs is amazing 👏
Just out of curiosity Gareth would you recommend picking up the 4K release of it. I'm sure it looks beautiful because anything that Ridley Scott does always looks amazing.
I agree with you when it comes to Zavvi and it is a massive Downside to arrow Video. To be honest 9 out of 10 times I would buy directly from Arrow. I always try to avoid buying directly off zavvi if I can

Arrow videos have these colours on all of their releases as part of their branding

Nice set, but I think the Amazon version (which is still available) has more striking/vibrant artwork/poster.

Whats the difference in image quality between remastered arrow Blu-ray vs arrow 4k uhd ? Which version is s superior image quality wise ?
Unfortunately I have not checked out the Blu-ray remastered edition so I honestly can't tell you but something is telling me it will be the 4K release.
@@millerman9991 I heard the 4k edition exposes the anomalies in grain and black levels.... more so than the bluray
Again I wouldn't know because I never checked out the Blu-ray on it. If I'm completely honest the 4K transfer is not going to win any awards for best picture quality so maybe looking into the Blu-ray might not be the worst thing in the world
Would love to add to collection as I've always loved the movie. But am I missing something? I cannot find it on Arrow's site.
This version of it the one with Steelbook is a zavvi exclusive. But arrow video should have something very similar only for the steelbook won't be in it. Very strange. Unless it's sold out.

Apology for that my friend. It's actually a very nice release and there's also another version you can get of this where you don't get Steelbook and I think it's quite cheaper. Maybe something to look into
Once upon a time … I liked this film. Not anymore. As with many memories of “great” movies from our past some experiences inevitably lose their appeal. Others won’t. After witnessing the solid values of Arrow’s 4K disc I found Costner’s retelling of the adventures in Sherwood Forrest mostly a drag. The cinematography was flat and murky, the action uninspired and foot lame and the acting mostly adequate at best. Based on a slow and cheesy script, including a best of “modern” ideologies nothing really fits together here. And by the TV-standards set by Game of Thrones for medieval-ish times the production design of Robin Hood came across as cheap as can be (even if that comparison is ot really fair). One highlight was, of course, Alan Rickman, who obviously knew, that chewing the scenery was his only way out of being ridiculed for partaking in this mess of a production. Alas, his acting prowess was cancelled out by their sheer incompetence (in these roles) by Costner and Slater. Worst cast decision ever. BUT: All criticism aside: It did work, the movie was a smashing success. And I did like it then. Your unboxing and review of the Arrow LE on the other hand was a delight to watch and very insightful as usual. Thank you, Keith!
I think everybody's gone through something very similar where you enjoyed movies back in the day that you simply just can't stand nowadays. I know I've gone through if numerous times. A great example of it would be The Princess Bride. My god when I was younger I would watch that movie every week and nowadays I simply can't stomach it. It's not that it's a bad movie I just don't think it's aged all that well. I bought it around a year ago on 4K and I was genuine excited to see the movie on 4K and then when I started watching it I was just so underwhelmed by it. It's a shame when that happens but unfortunately it does. Thanksfully it hasn't happened with Robin Hood prince of Thieves and I hope it never does.
