It's pretty weird watching Fed back then. He went from a decent player who might win a Slam to untouchable magician in 2 years. It isn't even an attitude or confidence change, a lot of technical aspects to his game improved markedly. I don't feel like he's talked about it much but I hope he does one day.
2003-200 was the weakest era where the good player were either old or still young. Then, he was dominated by the teen nadal and later by djoco.
TheUA-camr dominated isn’t a fair word to use, dumbfuck.
I agree, he must have trained like a madman during those years and something just clicked.
Decent player ?!! Some just started watching Tennis.
@@theyoutuber273 Then grandpa Roger dominated prime Nadal lololol...
Fed knew it was going to be a long match, so he brought his whole wardrobe
Roger "I change my Shirt for every set" Federer 😂
Hahahaha yes😂
Back when Fed used to sweat.
This is just one year before Wimbledon title, and 2 years before Fed fine-tuned his game to almost perfection and a winning machine. Clearly you can see here lots of glimpses of genius, superb winners, albeit with a few normal mistakes, but his potential started to look enormous. Andre himself wrote about it in his book.
I think Agassi also said that Federer is the best he ever played. And Agassi played against three different generations of tennis players, from the second half of the 80's when McEnroe, Lendl or Connors were active, the 90's with Sampras, Becker, Edberg, and to the mid-00's when Federer, Nadal, Hewitt and Safin appeared on the screen. That says a lot about Federer's quality.
@@Perebynis first of all he never said that.
Second of all he always said rafa is goat.
Fed dint improve but Agassi got old. Other wise Agassi would have beaten fed the same way always and would have had a rivalry like rafa has again roger one sided
sameer Ul haq khan Saab Agassi did say that Fed was the best player he face, also Fed did improve dramatically between 2002-2004. Give the guy some credit.
I was about to comment this!
I'm so happy Tennis TV fulfilled my wish. I've been waiting for this match for ages!!!
Agassi had legendary returns
The early 2000s were a great period for tennis. You had the last few years of the greats, Agassi and Sampras, the emergence of the new talent like Hewitt, Safin and Nalbandian, and the first signs of what Federer would go on to be. Hell, even Tim Henman reached the French Open semis in 2004 with a serve-volley game!
The Best era of Tennis for me, different personalities, different playing styles, courts variety, anyone can win a slam, fun to watch matches and many other reasons, Federer, Agassi Nalbadian, Roddick, Safin, Nadal, Ferrero,Gonzalez and many other players. a treat for the eyes.
You think we are at the helm of a similar era, big three on their way out, next gen making their mark! Take Miami 2021 finals for eg. who would have thought that HH vs Sinner will be the finals.
2000 till 2004....Sampras, Agassi, Kafelnikov, Kuerten, Moya, Corretja, Kucera ,Bjorkman, Enqvist, Ríos, Henman and the emergent talents...Federer, Safin, Hewitt, Nalbandian, Coria, Roddick, Ferrero, Ferrer, Robredo, teenager Rafa, Nole and Murray....
@@gurvijaybecker but most of them are still nowhere close to djokovic and the older guys except for maybe medvedev and a few others
@@mike04574 o yeah that’s a big reason Nole was able to win 3 slams this year. With Federer at 40 and Nadal with feet issue and physically on decline who is gonna challenge Nole now. Beginning of weak era is actually beneficial to him.
This was before he made sponsorship with Gilette :D
Pretty contrasting to see how different every aspect of Federers playing is to today's style, from his forehand to his serve.
yeah his backhand is different now and also after he played against nadal, Federer picked up a new forhand style, the swing behind head style.
Federer pre 2013 and post 2013 are like two different players, this is more like a less refined version of his 03-09 self
Shows how well he can adapt to different players in different eras
True !!!!
@@10Mbowman what I notice with his forehand watching videos of 2002 matches is that his left arm was swinging all over which basically kills the power built up from the core muscles into the forehand stroke. It also caused inconsistency in stroke production

Good old times, when we had all kind of different players, surfaces and balls, and way better tennis overall. See how well constructed are the points here.
The homogenization of the tour (which started in 2008-09) killed any kind of variety we had in the sport, now almost everyone is either a hard hitter or a pusher.
I'm trying to figure out how I could agree with you more, but I can't. Well stated, sir.
What could tennis do to revert it? 🤔
@@guitarsarebest6565 Thank you.
@@polloelegante5927 Setting certain rates of CPI for each season, and each or set of the M1000s using different compounds for the surfaces. At least, to start with.
Thank you for this comment! Couldn’t agree more, I can’t stand pusher, baseline style play with no variety in spin..
The court was so fast back then. Andre hit rising ball very well. Roger still young but showed some special shots.
The way he hooked that lob at 3:35 is beautiful..he makes it look so easy..! Best forehand lob I have ever seen..!
The last time Agassi beat Federer.
Although 4 of Feds 8 wins were pretty close, but he edged them due to incredible clutchness (which he had back then).
The two us open matches they played in 04-05 where pretty close encounters
12 years different ! André is always André
yes they were close because from 2003 onwards, andre played with a bad back where he had to inject cortisol shots to numb the pain. that severely impeded his court movement which roger took advantage of. it’s also a shame because that’s the time when they slowed down the surfaces which would have perfectly suited his game. i think without that injury, agassi would have a better h2h against fed and he would have beaten rafa in 05 montreal final. nobody strikes the ball as clean as agassi.
Agassi was a great player won all four slams 17 masters series events olympic gold Davis cups and 60 atp titles much missed on the tour
Agassi is one of the legends of the game.
The only player to win 4 grand slams, atp finals, and olympic gold. He won 7 out of the master 1000s only behind djoco.
He revolutionized the game from the baseline. He might be the greatest striker of the ball who ever lived. And he is definitely the player of his era who has had the most impact on the later generations, for better or worse.
agassi is the only true baseliner to win wimbledon on fast grass. he is also the king of AO when it was still on rebound ace surface.
It's reasons like these that you can't really compare players of now and then and especially wta and atp. Wta have never played best of 5 in any events and the atp players of back then had to work that much harder and smarter
WTA used to have best of 5 at the year ending championships up until 2000 so that's a bit inaccurate. And even if there was best of 5 I doubt it would change the overall dominant players on tour.
There was no tie break set at the french or AO so the women have to be fit enough to play five sets becuase a best of 3 set match match could run as long as a 5 set match in duration case in point Kuznetsova vs Schiavone AO 2011 the match went 4 hrs and 47 minutes
I've never seen Federer suffer the opponent's game like this. Agassi is a little underestimated, he was one of the strongest players ever
Wow, what a match! It's amazing how Federer's game improved just a few years after these days.
This was a great match I hope to see the full match uploaded one day
Its insane how Federer changed his forehand grip over the years, and now is his most beautiful shot.
@TH4U If u like it its fine, i like his forehand. xd
Just passing through on my journey to watch every Federer match.
Agassi said after the first match vs young Federer: This guy‘s gonna be the best player in the world..
No he didn't say that at all. In fact he said he didn't see anything special in Federer.
Agassi was also like 11 years older than Roger. They were never gonna peak at the same time.
I was 2 years old when Roger did this.
Still doing great. How on Earth?
I was 1 year old lol.
I always love watching these vintage matches of Federer or any vintage match in general.
I admire how it gives me an insight into the early to mid 2000s era.
7/4/2020
Technology and softer/slower courts allow for more muscle stretching. Also Roger makes the opponent run son he doesn’t have to
I was around 2.5 lol yet I like these old matches compared to current baseline defensive ones.
I was an adult already but stopped following tennis after Sampras faded. Didn't like Hewitt and was unimpressed by Roddick's stiffness. I didn't even know about Federer until some unshaved and weird looking dude from Switzerland beat Mark Philippoussis at Wimbledon, in the final. I was disappointed by how easily Philippoussis was crushed by Federer, but after digging a bit and finding out he's the kid who ended Sampras's reign at Wimbledon, I started following tennis again. Now that Federer is almost gone, tennis has become boring again... Alcaraz might be impressive and a good kid, but he's a grinder like Nadal, not a thing of beauty who makes things look easy and beautiful. He needs to become super dominant to make the ATP tour worth following.
Their rivalry is underrated
Wow! Federer is so much sharper today.
Federer is a player that gets better and better as he gets older.
He’d only been on tour for 4 years. Of course he’s sharper now!
Roger is like old wine my friend

The funny thing about that is Agassi is old. This wasn't a 21yr old Agassi.
@@bhuvanesh0115 The main reason of that is Agaasi play his entire career on fast court (what I mean is in those days all courts were fast than today's courts)
than Fed.
I am not saying that Andre is better than Roger or vice a versa.. but I am saying the physical ability of Roger is better than Andre's so that's why he is still playing good but also courts are now a days also helps player to extend their game
Amey Chitale Faster courts would help rogers serve even more. They started to slow down courts since Roger took 4 US opens in a row from 2004 onwards
@@bhuvanesh0115 I'm not saying age has anything to do with Pete's retirement but that he was mentally done with travel and being away from home. No doubt Federer has evolved. I mean it's the nature of the game. All I am saying is if Pete had still been motivated to play tennis I don't think he would only have 14 titles. Pete will always be one of the greatest servers in tennis history. His serve was and is still considered one of the best. It was clutch in his day. As far as age Agassi played into his late 30's. He retired at 38. I like Federer I mean his serve has gotten much better too. He didn't always serve as good as he has been these last few years. Still age does play a role in dominance. That's nature. I just think it's ridiculous to say one legend would dominate another. That's like saying Kobe after putting up 80 points would dominate Jordan. When anyone who knows basketball knows Jordan or Kobe could beat each other one on one. But personally Jordan was a much better rookie than Kobe. Pete was a much better rookie than Federer or Nadal in my opinion. Both got better both became more dominate. But Djokovic is considered the Goat statistically. Look it up.
@@pennsydude9723 32 yo Agassi would easily beat 21 yo Agassi.
It's weird to think that nadal was still battling it out in futures and challengers and djokovic hadn't even turned pro even this match happened
Agassi really was a great player! Surprisingly his best years were his last few!
yep no competition then- sampras was old and heading towards retirement
@@1nalh Younger than Agassi when retired...
Agassi was great in the last few years, but it was really 99 to early-2000 where he was his best I believe. He was won French and USO in ‘99, and was year-end #1. Some people doubted him because Pete didn’t play USO 99, and he destroyed Agassi in Wimbledon and WTF finals. That’s why to me Agassi’s absolute peak was AO 2000. He beat Pete in a 5-set epic, thus solidifying he was the true best player in the world, and then beat defending champ Kafelnikov in the Final.
my first racquet ever- wilson hypercarbon 85 :) in Betterer hands - very good... memory from good old days :)
his forehand was different much more open-stanced, backhand different, serve different... and I noticed he was much slower at that time... what an improvement over the years
Agassi was great at 32... He and Sampras would be multi slam winners in this era...
in what era?
I didn't know they had 5 sets for this tournament. A very raw Federer and a classy Agassi
it was only in the final.
How on earth agassi felt good hiting groundstrokes ON THE FUKING BASELINE. EVERY. TIME. Hes literally ok with returning balls that are 60 miles per hour on his feet.
The courts were simply too fast for Federer here.
He benefited from the courts slowing down from 2003 onwards.
Agassi at his best was unbeatable. Such a natural.
Lol, a lot of courts were still the same up until 2007, particularly Miami. Fed won this in 05 and 06 so I dont know what your talking about 🤣
@@edgarpanganiban9339 Federer himself said he remembers the Miami 2002 match for the courts being too quick for him.

It's super interesting watching this old highlights in reflection of how Fed's strokes changed over the years. Couple of things...
1) He's actually always had that over the head finish off the cross court TS FH shot, even before meeting Nadal. He doesn't to it on every shot but because he has such a natural kinetic chain whenever he hits open stance cross court when pressured with pace he finishes quite a lot like this.
2) Early on his career he didn't have the violent whip on the FH wing quite as much; he was arming the ball a little bit more and the whole stroke wasn't as natural.
3) His take back wasn't quite as compact and in generally he played with a lot more clearance and less pace.
It's fascinating to see how much he improved into his career...
Technical differences; his backhand was average, his forehand was above average, and his serve was a little better than average. Today, ALL of them are exceptional. If anything, his biggest issue today is that he is getting older and doesn't hit it as big as he did in 2019/2018. But it is STILL way above what we see here.
They definitely were not average back then, that's crazy. It was his overall game that let him down at times, and his attitude. But his shots were definitely not average back then.
@@handzar6402 compare his backhand here vs when he played James Blake.
Nah his bh is weak and has been exposed by Novak and especially rafa
@@NamTran-xc2ip When are you referring to? This here, when he played Blake, or in his most recent tennis?

Literally everytime Nadal doesn't do anything too special, just top spin on fed bh and fed makes unforced errors.
Yeah fed was still able to dominate prior to 2010 and it's actually amazing how he did it with that loopy backhand.
But when the courts are slowed he doesn't get away with that anymore.
His bh improved alot since 2015 but unfortunately he is not the youngest and had to face god mode novak
Esa final habría sido hermosa con Ríos
This was last Agassi win against Roger...
I don’t know if by 2002 fed switched to hybrid stringing but I think lux helped with his consistency
It’s too bad Sampras already retired, he would have had some great matches with Federer.
Noah Gibson They only played once bro
Actually Sampras was still there, he retired later that year after winning the US Open.
Sampras lost to Gonzo in this tournament. He lost to Hewitt in Indian Wells
Sampras made the right call going out at the top. He couldn’t have survived the base line era.
He was just 31!!!!
Agassi is 31 here but he’s called the “old maestro” lol
Why where the shot sounds much better back then? It's like the microphones have gotten worse.
How this guy still wants to play today? His whole life was on courts. 2002 in Miami final with Agassi, 2019 again with Isner :D Federer has seen 3 generations in tennis. Andi who s Djokovic and Nadal dealing with in their early 30s today? Federer was dealing with peak Djokovic, Nadal and Murray in his early 30s. Greatness is something else.
Not to mention massive changes in speed of courts after 2008 which is one of the biggest disadvantages to his play style.
Who would have told this guy playing opposite Andre would go on to win 20 Grand Slams. Roger was the silent killer.
Can't wait for tennis to return...
for me Federer is just a good player who enjoyed an easy transitional era
What a phenomenal ball striker Agassi was from the ground, easily the best ever. If he was more mobile, would have won more, its such a pity his movement declined so much post late 2003/early 2004. His play in the 1995 AO was some of the best ever in tennis.
djokovic the best pure ball striker ever. 9 Australian opens. not agassi.
Agassi was/is still a better striker of the ball on both sides, just look how deep and consistent were his balls landed 👏.,and this is at a later stage in his career. Well aware he has less AUO's, and look at how he hugs that baseline, that was special, can't deny nobody comes close to doing that 😊
that’s because he injured his back in 2003 and started injecting cortisol to numb the pain. that impeded his movement and one of the reasons roger caught up in their h2h.
@@darrylperry648absolutely andre the best cleanest striker of all time. never seen him shank a ball. his baseline shot mechanics is beautiful to watch. he would have won at least 8 AOs on rebound ace surface (much more difficult than plexicushion surface) if he was focused earlier in his career.
This was a great win for Agassi, it's hard to believe just one year later that Federer would elevate to such a high level. With all respect to the big 3 now and Agassi and Sampras (though I never could stand him) I think it's hard to really say who would have had trouble with who. But I will say this, I don't see Agassi and definitely Sampras giving Nadal any trouble on clay, I mean lets look at all the French Open's he won, I mean seriously, is there really a doubt, let's be realistic. As for grass, I'd say Federer, Sampras and Djokovic battling it out. I still give the edge to Federer he did end Sampras' chance at 8 wimbledons (which Sampras won the year before). Australian open, pretty much Djokovic with Federer not far behind. As for the US Open, that one I think would be pretty much up for grabs, but I'll give that edge to Agassi taking the ball early.
Tennis players developin their game.thats why Hewit and Safin had better strokes than Agassi(except backhand) and Sampras.ANd Djokovic,Federer have better strokes than Safin Hewitt
Very good match to watch!!
Andre, my role model as a teenager.
Roger, my role model as an adult.
I’ve watched this one a few times. As an Agassi fan I have always felt like he squeaked this one out. You can already see how Federer is starting to learn how to get control of the points. Good match and a solid level from both. But one thing I just noticed is at the end, if I am hearing correctly, the commentator called Agassi the old maestro. Lol. He has no idea about the Maestro that we were about to witness. 😂

When some players entered the scene, it was easy to spot they are going to do great things. But i never thought that about Federer when he was young. I also didnt see Sampras talent at first. It was indeed difficult. The first match i saw from Sampras was 1989 against Chang at the Frenche Open. Sampras even had horror matches at the French Open in his prime. So no wonder he totally sucked against Chang and i couldnt understand that the reporter was saying something like Sampras is seen as a big talent. He looked totally lost on Clay 1989. The first time i saw Agassi i was sure he was going to be great. It was easy to spot, no one before hit the ball like Andre.
Agassi was probably thinking the same about Federer like he did for Sampras: he'll never make it.
That was weird. Federer playing so many shots to Agassi’s forehand. He slightly adjust in the later sets, but still too many shots I felt to Agassi’s forehand.
By playing to Agassi's forehand Federer knew he would get a lot of forehands himself. Which was - and still is - Fed's best stroke. So my guess is he did it tactically.
Arthur Verhulst not if Agassi directs it back to his backhand. It makes more sense if it was forehand cross court exchange, but when Federer hits his backhand down the line, there were too many times where Agassi simply went back to his backhand. Plus, the way Federer played it, ended up opening up his backhand too many times. Plus even if Federer would get more forehands, the problem is also that he has better forehands from the ad side. Most male players have better forehands from the ad court if they’re righties. Federer is one of them.
Agassi played backahnd better than forehand
Monsta Andy but Agassi’s forehand was not a weakness and can still easily direct it to Federer’s backhand. Plus Agassi’s forehand may be more prone to errors but it’s still a bigger and heavier shot, and is not that far off in terms of precision.
@@DepthCharge01 to play cross is a very common tactic in tennis.and Federer had better forehand, during Agassi had a better backhand. There are even pros who play only cross.Federer played a lot of longline backhand,i think becauce he hitted the ball to late

Who doesn’t LOVE Andre? His 6 Miami titles is a record for men; incredible. But the great Serena Williams now has EIGHT Miami titles. Will anyone, male or female, ever tie or pass that record? I wish Miami were still played on these green courts OR the purple ones in Key Biscane. The new location and court surface is horrendous (I have been there life) and the lighting is awful due to the partitioned stadium. Fewer and fewer people play Miami each year. They really ruined the event.

Agassi used a Kevlar combo
You can see federer starts winning when he starts attacking by hitting through the ball instead of relying on his reverse FH. He figures at this rate he will lose so might as well go big. From then on he plays this way against everyone.
And aggasi could never win against The king again .
Remember, Agassi was past his prime...
Ivan Garcia, that is correct.

Federer's footwork isn't the best here and neither is his backhand. Once he improved in those two areas, he started to win slams and became a top player.
He was already a top player.
It's the heat and that small raquect so his backhand was prone to error . His footwork is already top notch here.
He gained consistency and better strategy, but the core of his style is clear here, just sharper in every aspect in the following years
@@diegosotomiranda4107 also the camera angle and Federer and Agassi type of play makes it look like they are slow because the play so fast and near the baseline, taking the time of each other
His backhand has been and will always be bad. Not much has changed. He can neither defend nor attack well with it. He couldn’t then and he can’t now. Every shot with a little bit of depth or pace will most likely draw the error on this side. Backhand probably cost him an additional 10 slams if we‘re generous. He’s won slams like RG 2009, Wimbledon 2012 or USO 2007 virtually without a proper backhand. That tells you how great every other aspect of his game really is.
