Pete Sampras vs Andre Agassi Extended highlights | US Open 2001 Quarterfinal
Вставка
- Опубліковано 31 жов 2020
- Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi faced off 34 times in their careers, with Sampras finishing with a 20-14 edge in a rivalry that spanned 13 years. They met four times at the US Open, with Sampras sweeping their New York bouts.
Fittingly, three of those four US Open meetings came in the championship match. But the 2001 quarterfinal has best stood the test of time, it's quality and drama every bit deserving of a final itself.
Neither Sampras, 30, nor Agassi, 31, dropped serve once in Arthur Ashe Stadium, with each set being decided by a tiebreak, one more riveting than the last.
"Two great players playing great at the same time," Sampras would tell the The New York Times, looking back years later. "That doesn't often happen."

The best serve against the best return . Doesnt get any better than this. Andre and Pete just bought the best out of each other . They had some epic matches back then. This match was by far the best ever between these two. They produced jaw dropping winners winners out of nowhere at times.
One of the best matches I have ever seen. I have never forgotten it.
So have I.
This is the Ali Frazier of tennis
I watched this live. Cleanest ball striking I’ve seen in 35 years. On this night, playing at these levels, no other player would have stood a chance.
That's just bullshit you know that?
Absolutely one of the best matches i have ever seen. Both players were so good. Pete`s serves and volleys, Andre`s returns and passing-shots. Still enjoying watching this match.
You guys are the best! Any 90/00s match between Agassi, Sampras, Chang and Courier is the best quarantine gift ever ❤️
YES !!!!!!
I miss that era
When the stars align you get Pete Sampras. It still amazes me he just doesn't miss an overhead. Can't say that about today's players.
Pete has the best overhead ever but current players outside of djokovic(who mysteriously has a very bad one) all have great overheads. Nadal in particular doesn't miss them and will hit very high degree of difficulty overheads.
@@SkiiiiiifreeeeeeeSampras doesn’t shoot overheads as much as he slam dunks
Nadal never missed an overhead
Because you're stuck in the past, man.
Look at the brilliant returns of Agassi while Sampras serves.
Fast hard court tennis at its highest level.
I remember the hype from that match as a teen back in the day! Both Sampras and Agassi were the superstars of the 90s. Miss that era!
Yes, there were 3 main eras. This was the second one.
Why would you miss that era when Federer was better than both
@@juanestebankruhsanmguel1960 - Because Sampras would own Federer on a fast court any day of the week, and maybe Agassi also??
@@steveturner609 Actually nah, they would own nothing, Sampras and Federer had only one encouter in the tour at wimby and he lost 2001, plus 2 exhibitions in New York 2008 and Seoul 2007 and Sampras lost both times as well, as far as Agassi concerned, he well played in the late stages of his career but he lost the h2h against Federer 8-3 before he retired, with Federer beating him 8 times in a raw since 2003, so, maybe you liked them and it's normal, but feelings are not the criteria to decide which one is better, only the result decide the outcome, so The fact is Federer has mostly won the encounter against both of them, that's the fact. The rest is mostly feeling and nostalgia but it's normal as human being
@@juanestebankruhsanmguel1960 he wouldnt let nadal own him for awhile would he??
Their greatest match ever. Ironically it was only a Quarter Final!
My dad and I were at this match. It was epic!
Lucky dog
Liar
Wow awesome I can't imagine what that must have been like
It's funny but, this doesn't look like 22 years ago. Think Andre and Pete would still be real forces on the tour!
Sampras just didn’t let you breathe. Always at the net.
More macho than federa
Andre had some exceptional returns of serve in this match!
His very signature shot!
He's the best return man of all time for sure.
If Sampras had a record to shoot out he could've won many more majors. He would've trained harder and played longer. He also played with a less powerful racquet and still served mid 130's. With a modern racquet he could've served in the mid 140s. Probably greatest player ever.
greatest servebot ever
@@sunritroykarmakar4406 servebot? 🤣🤣🤣
True. But he could have switched racquets later in his career, but he opted not to. I believe when he came back to play after he retired, he actually used a bigger racquet and I believe he said something to the effect "if I had this racquet, I could have played on longer".
@@thepsychologist8159Same thing as Federer.
Sampras had the best forehand volley ever. His high forehand volley, which in my opinion is the most difficult shot in tennis, was exceptional. Never seen any player hit it better.
Roger??
@@oscaralegre3683 good but Sampras was the best at service and volley, crosscourt forehand as well... It's a shame he is not around in his prime with the big 3, would have been the big 4
@@user-bm8sv1ne4m for sure, if Sampras was the age of Rafa or Novak that would be the best big 4 ever
@@oscaralegre3683 I agree that the big three beat all the records. But I also agree and if I'm honest the era of Sampras was more competitive. He had to play against better players than what the big 3 have right now. Also medical wise now they have bigger chance of prolonging their careers.
@@user-bm8sv1ne4m people think there are no competition right now, is just that the big 3 are monster in the grand slams. Anyone can win master 1000 or atp 500, but grand slams are exclusive for the big 3
Pete sampras my best No.1 tennis player off all time no one served & volly like pete
I agree!
Roger federer also has a decent serve
Guess you ever heard of Stefan EdBerg or John McEnroe. They both volleyed better than Sampras. Just didn’t have his serve
Pete reduced tennis to just serve & volley, Federer has an allround game that demonstrates speed, power, grace & technique; just my opinion
Yeah Pistol Pete best player to watch ever. Fantastic movement. When he was in his rythm he was unstopable.
Love watching tennis highlights from before they slowed all the court surfaces down.
This is the best of all their US Open matches
Agreed
I think the best should be 2013 final...
Better than watching Novak in a 30+ shot rally just waiting for the Unforced Errors.
I admire Pete’s serve and volley, Andre’s forehand and return, Roger’s backhand and fluidity and Rafa’s tenacity and speed.
ONLY LEGENDS CAN HAVE SUCH PINPOINT ACCURACY.....
NO WONDER, ONE OF THE BEST MATCHES EVER !!!!!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🥵🥵🥵😎😎😎
This is another level of tennis🔥🔥🔥 both are on absolute fire!!
¡Definitivamente Pete Sampras es mi ídolo!👌
Outstanding, absolutely brilliant.
legendary match between these two legends
This Sampras is better than 1995 Sampras and easily better than the big 3 at their best. He’s only 30 here and I think could’ve improved had he had the modern fitness and diet
i’m not a tennis player but i definitely have an appreciation for such athleticism and talent… 👍💪💖
Andre, Pete, all the 90s kids dream!!!
Sampras would go on to leave his mark on the game but Agassi still had some steam 💪🏻🎾 Love it!
And they say Sampras's backhand was his weaker side!! Not in this match and plenty of others I've seen, like the Wimbledon final against Becker, where his backhand won so many points.
Sampras was underrated athlete.. He moved very well
Part of highlights should include the post-match handshake at the net, me thinks.
Everyone from any era would have had a difficult time against prime Pete on old fast grass, hard and carpet, against Andre as well.
P.S.Against Boris when in form as well,Becker was playing incredibly, giving troubles to prime Pete.
Yes, they have had to make the modern surfaces slower.
Damn right !!!! Waiting for the morons that only know today’s game to argue , this was one for the ages !!!!
Only polyester strings can beat Pete on a fast court.
You know when it’s all said and done and Djokovic , Nadal and Fed retire I think those who know tennis will recognise that Pete was the most unbeatable player of all time at his peak or was the most destructive dominant player at his peak of all time .
With all the Federer Wizardry , Djokovic mental power and Nadal tenacity , Sampras was an entirely different beast that dominated in an era of champions of champions on the most brutal of courts .
There’s a reason why the new guard respect him so much and safe to say would fear him in a match up if it was ever somehow possible .
@@stealthcat100 nah the big 3 are all superior to sampras.
As a spectator, I preferred to watch agassi’s style of play. His ball striking was so clean… Pete’s game was a tough match up for him though…
As far as shots… Pete’s jump smash (3:30) was a thing of beauty.
…
This match is worth a full rewatch. It was that good.
Pete is the king of tennis. !!!
Great shot making
Thank you for this great highlight package. The only change that would make it better would be 30 minutes , like " The Bluejays in 30 " we get in Canada.
I miss my Andre! Such great tennis to watch. Even when Andre loses a point I still don't get too upset the tennis is so good. These two brought out the best in each other and I use this match as the GOAT of what tennis should look like. Sorry Big 3 you'll never match this style and intensity. Wish we had another American to root for in this day and age.
The big three must have been influenced by these two legends of the tennis
That Sampras running forehand is lethal. Wish he had switched racquets later in his career. Can’t believe the tennis he was able to play with that 6.0 that late in his career. SAMPRAS IS THE REAL GOAT 🐐
A reminder of how great this match was. How did AA lose? Never hit the ball cleaner nor returned better. Like swatting flies.
Agassi was sloppier in the tiebreakers, especially the 4th set breaker
@@howdy0000Yeah, sucks man. If he could've held Sampras to a 5th set, he might've wore him down like he did at the 2000 AO semifinal. Once they got to 5th set, Sampras basically died and Agassi took it 6-1 to win the match.
The quality of this one match outdoes that of entire tournaments these days.
3:02 - 3:09 - And critics state that Sampras didn't have a great backhand.
Awesome 😎
For any young people watching, the reason the rallys were shorter was due to flatter shots without all the top spin, which made it all faster. Think Medvedev or Del Potro. Fun fact, Sampras forehand was said to be consistently 90-100mph.
I agree, combined with the slowing down of all court surfaces, even grass.
Anyone there that nite, you got a treat
I più grandi della storia del tennis, come mo divertivo!
Sampras on his prime can beat any player in this world. The best tennis player of all time imao
Those black Nike Oscillates were 🔥🔥 Sampras was wearing
super high level
Lol Agassi was playing brutally here !
Where is the scoreline?
Thumb down
The best version of Agassi and the best version of Sampras finally showed up in the same match that night. In all of their previous matchups, it felt like when Sampras was on his game, Agassi was absent. And when Agassi was on his game, Sampras was a step too slow, or so it seemed. On this night, they both brought it, and it was decided by the slimmest of margins.
Thi s my fouraite game to watch
GREATEST TENNIS MATCH EVER PLAYED IN US OPEN HISTORY...NO DOUBTS.
legends
The best players 🥂 from Paris
2 of the best ever play the gm
One of the greatest games I have ever seen
THIS are the real classics. There are no better matches than sampras vs agassi. Nadal vs federer or vs djokovic not even close
Sure mate.
Nadal vs Fed is the best duel because of their contrasting style followed by pete vs Andre. Pete is ❤️
federer vs nadal best entertainment
federer vs djokovic closest matches
djokovic vs nadal long endless rally
Although it's always tough to compare between the eras.
Nadal & Djokovic are problem solvers. Samprass Agassi are good players but not as great as Nadal & Djokovic.
I feel like Samprass Agassi would have won the initial encounters but later on Djokovic & Nadal would exploit every weakness of thier games.
Djokovic & Nadal have much higher physical strength and stamina then anyone on the Tour ever. They would have made these guys RUN a lot and then beat them after sucking every drop of their energy.
I don't see Samprass' backhand surviving Nadal's forehand. I didn't think Samprass would win longer rallies in Djokovic or Nadal service games.
I can see serve and volley failing against the Big3.
Djokovic has much better return then Agassi and so is Nadal's. if not better, it's almost par.
Just think of the following things
Mental Strength & Problem Solving
Movement and Court Coverage
Physically sustain longer battles
Nadal's forehand to anyone's backhand exchange
Djokovic's Return
Anticipation of the shots.
The only thing Samprass and Agassi are left with is their Explosiveness, Talent and Samprass' serve.
**Sorry for Grammar
And of course you need to dismiss great players when praising your favorite.
The best tennis match of all time.
5:03 - 517 -- Classic Sampras! Hard to teach that.
The last years of great American tennis
Bring back the lighter balls! Quicker courts! Tired of these 10mn rallies...
The score needs to be added like in modern times. None of us watching this have no idea what the score is. It's very hard to follow.
Wouldn't mind seeing the score Here and there
Meilleur serveur du monde vs meilleur retourneur du monde
Tennis was really entertaining back then .
How many amazing returns do you see Agassi make? Ever see Novak make even half as many good returns per match? Exactly....
Jogos maravilhosos, quase tudos sem tipo gemido
as great as Federer and Djokovic are,.... I still think Sampras had a better serve than Roger and Agassi a better return than Nole. Of course, overall the better players are the big three... but Sampras and Agassi had a fun rivalry and many amazing points
How many times Sampras is being defeated by Agassi at net
And he still won the match
Im watching two of the greatest battle here and reminded of the fool Nick Kyrios saying they couldn't play today. Nick has a losing record against Stan Wawrinka. Is there a sane person on the planet that would say Stan is better than Pete? If he has a losing record against Stan would he even have gotten a set off Pete? I doubt it.
Great match. But, the final would have been way better with Agsasi vs. Hewitt.
Just post the whole match. :/
they or the official us open youtube already did months ago.

@@JOTennisVid thank you
The quality of tennis is top notch, but the coverage is pathetic, don't know what the score is because they are not showing it, also the angle of rallies from ground court level wasn't needed.
Wimbledon coverage was way much better.
It’s weird to think that 9/11 happened two weeks after that
Not two weeks even 6 days. The match was on September 5, 2001
PETE G.O.A.T SERVE END OFF
This was way too short and edited badly !
😮😮😮
Cut here and there … not easy to follow !
Serve vs return
Seems ridiculous to have the racket technology create a need to slow the surfaces down. How about leave the rackets alone or make the new technology illegal? Just stupidity all around. I played tennis in the 70s and 80s as a junior competitively. I didn't play for years. When I came back to the game 25 years later and with my new racket it felt like I was from Krypton.
Agassi and almost all the players in this generation have said they prefer the modern rackets and surfaces.
@@NamTran-xc2ip Naturally, he was part of the wave leading to todays players and 30 shot rallies.
Quarters Agassi, semis Safin, in the final Sampras was tired.
Back when the US had decent mens players
Agassi could hit on the rise while Sampras had better touch
These are the matches when you get every penny back from your ticket purchase…
I am sorry, Big 3, but this is just higher level of tennis.
Both of them were past their prime here though
Hell no
Nop
It Is
" Big 3" were lucky
Take off those rose tinted spectacles please!
I'm sorry, but :
Tyson - Boxing
Ronaldinho - Football
Jordan - Basketball
Gretsky - Hockey
Schumacher - Rasing
V. Rossi - Best MotoGP
Tiger Woods - best in golf
Karelin - Wrestling
Michael Jackson - Pop music
Eminem - RAP
Sampras - Tennis ✅✅
great match, fantastic to see!
Pity again for the bad video quality, the awkward picture frame and the advertisings....
And in the end, Lleyton Hewitt won the tournament, right ?
doesn't really matter to be honest... Pete wasn't in his best form for the finals and Lleyton was playing Balls out tennis.. No Disrespect to Lleyton cause he was absolutely ON that day.. Although some would say if they told Pete that Hewitt was American and not an Aussie he probably woulda been spitting fire.. cause he LOVED destroying Fellow Americans(Example 2002 US Open Sampras vs Roddick)
I mean Pete remains a way greater player than Hewitt.
From 1995 to 2001 - the Older man got better than the younger man!!!
2:58 Aga fh
And a year later, Pete wins his last GS and match ever against AA.
Several years later in the hit for hate lol, charity match, AA hasn't got over Pete beating up on him in big matches.
Let's his bitterness spill all over the court, embarrassing himself and showing none of the class he learnt and showed over the years. Great memories here, but unfortunately 2001, something horrible is heading to NY and isn't far away.
Yeah, that was awful scenario and extremely awkward situation to watch
@@YJ-br7ug cupcakes yum, that makes sense lol
Agree that Andre hit a nerve with Pete that night you mention but they made up soon after. I don't think it bothered Pete in the long run and certainly doesn't muddy their great rivalry. Most people who follow tennis aren't even aware of the spat (and that Pete is a lousy tipper! 😂 😉)
@@andomando9303 AA apologised through the media the next day and contacted Pete. Admitted he was out of line and was a poor attempt at humour.
Pete said straight after the match on court, he has no issue WITH AA,.
Agassi cracked it another time against Pete in a singles exhibition.
Pete smashed him around the court and Agassi spat it and said he wouldn't play him again.
I don't think their great friends but have respect for each other and the rivalry they shared.
Agassi seriously couldn't find a pair of black socks?
Sampras seriously couldn't find a pair of white Nikes?
Brings back memories of watching this in the Texas heat and itching to go hit afterwards...
Just a few days before 9/11 ...
Such a good match, such horrible commentary. This was obviously commentated over years later by two clowns.
Agassi would be even better in todays game. Sampras will be punished by Nadal and Djokovic with that backhand
Nadal forehand would give Sampras backhand a hard time. But against Novak he would have enough time to run around and hit a forehand. Novak needs time and space to move. Sampras does not give you any. Would have been great to see th dynamics of such a match especially Pete's serve against arguably the best returner in history in Novak.
and few days later 9/11 happened
Sampras had a very boring game. Serve and net and waiting for the opponent's error. That's why he was always a bad player on clay, which is where you see really technical tennis players.
Lol, I can say clay is just who runs faster and hit harder.
