Pete Sampras vs Andre Agassi Extended highlights | US Open 2001 Quarterfinal

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 31 жов 2020
  • Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi faced off 34 times in their careers, with Sampras finishing with a 20-14 edge in a rivalry that spanned 13 years. They met four times at the US Open, with Sampras sweeping their New York bouts.
Fittingly, three of those four US Open meetings came in the championship match. But the 2001 quarterfinal has best stood the test of time, it's quality and drama every bit deserving of a final itself.
Neither Sampras, 30, nor Agassi, 31, dropped serve once in Arthur Ashe Stadium, with each set being decided by a tiebreak, one more riveting than the last.
"Two great players playing great at the same time," Sampras would tell the The New York Times, looking back years later. "That doesn't often happen."

The best serve against the best return . Doesnt get any better than this. Andre and Pete just bought the best out of each other . They had some epic matches back then. This match was by far the best ever between these two. They produced jaw dropping winners winners out of nowhere at times.

Although it's always tough to compare between the eras.
Nadal & Djokovic are problem solvers. Samprass Agassi are good players but not as great as Nadal & Djokovic.
I feel like Samprass Agassi would have won the initial encounters but later on Djokovic & Nadal would exploit every weakness of thier games.
Djokovic & Nadal have much higher physical strength and stamina then anyone on the Tour ever. They would have made these guys RUN a lot and then beat them after sucking every drop of their energy.
I don't see Samprass' backhand surviving Nadal's forehand. I didn't think Samprass would win longer rallies in Djokovic or Nadal service games.
I can see serve and volley failing against the Big3.
Djokovic has much better return then Agassi and so is Nadal's. if not better, it's almost par.
Just think of the following things
      Mental Strength & Problem Solving
      Movement and Court Coverage
      Physically sustain longer battles
Nadal's forehand to anyone's backhand exchange
      Djokovic's Return
      Anticipation of the shots.
The only thing Samprass and Agassi are left with is their Explosiveness, Talent and Samprass' serve.

The quality of tennis is top notch, but the coverage is pathetic, don't know what the score is because they are not showing it, also the angle of rallies from ground court level wasn't needed.
Wimbledon coverage was way much better.

Seems ridiculous to have the racket technology create a need to slow the surfaces down. How about leave the rackets alone or make the new technology illegal? Just stupidity all around. I played tennis in the 70s and 80s as a junior competitively. I didn't play for years. When I came back to the game 25 years later and with my new racket it felt like I was from Krypton.

doesn't really matter to be honest... Pete wasn't in his best form for the finals and Lleyton was playing Balls out tennis.. No Disrespect to Lleyton cause he was absolutely ON that day.. Although some would say if they told Pete that Hewitt was American and not an Aussie he probably woulda been spitting fire.. cause he LOVED destroying Fellow Americans(Example 2002 US Open Sampras vs Roddick)

And a year later, Pete wins his last GS and match ever against AA.
Several years later in the hit for hate lol, charity match, AA hasn't got over Pete beating up on him in big matches.
Let's his bitterness spill all over the court, embarrassing himself and showing none of the class he learnt and showed over the years. Great memories here, but unfortunately 2001, something horrible is heading to NY and isn't far away.

Agree that Andre hit a nerve with Pete that night you mention but they made up soon after. I don't think it bothered Pete in the long run and certainly doesn't muddy their great rivalry. Most people who follow tennis aren't even aware of the spat (and that Pete is a lousy tipper! 😂 😉)

@@andomando9303 AA apologised through the media the next day and contacted Pete. Admitted he was out of line and was a poor attempt at humour.
Pete said straight after the match on court, he has no issue WITH AA,.
Agassi cracked it another time against Pete in a singles exhibition.
Pete smashed him around the court and Agassi spat it and said he wouldn't play him again.

    • @MrChrisK1973
      @MrChrisK1973 11 місяців тому

Nadal forehand would give Sampras backhand a hard time. But against Novak he would have enough time to run around and hit a forehand. Novak needs time and space to move. Sampras does not give you any. Would have been great to see th dynamics of such a match especially Pete's serve against arguably the best returner in history in Novak.

Sampras had a very boring game. Serve and net and waiting for the opponent's error. That's why he was always a bad player on clay, which is where you see really technical tennis players.
