Brutal to watch. Roddick gave it everything he had. That second set tiebreak point at 6-5 will haunt him forever.
He himself to be blamed
This was the finest match I ever watched Andy play. And it wasn’t enough. There is a reason why Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic dominated tennis for so long. They’re simply better than other players even when those players bring their A game.
It's at 6:05 if anyone wants to watch it again.
@@matthewwilliams1709 that is what is so amazing about the last decade, normally it will be on champion but to have 3 players that are so amazing all holding 20 majors each is just absolutely bonkers.
@@matthewwilliams1709 the better player won. Fed was better than roddick here, and Djokovic was better than Fed 2019
Felt sorry for Roddick, played the game of his life and still come up short.
Mishits on decisive moments. That volley in the second set. Those enormous misses he hit with his frame in the last game. Like the ball bounced on sand rather than on grass. Poor Andy, he deserved one Wimbledon, just couldn't handle the pressure, like Goran. Only difference was Federer was his opponent and not Rafter.
Roddick was one of the best tennis player . Would have been much better if he was born same year as Djokovic and Murray .
Roddick needed to place his serves better instead of just using power; Federer had more aces. Andy played conventional tennis and it isn't enough.
AC John heavily disagreeing looking at this match. Roger was probably the best st neutralising Andys serve and yet couldn’t break him until the very last game.
@Vitor Hara Yes, but he wouldn't have to play Federer in his prime.
People keep talking about the '07 & '08 Wimbledon finals as one of the greatest finals ever.... But why is this match so easily overlooked and forgotten? This is as epic as anyone can get (Roddick lost serve only once!!)
People overlook how tough Roddick was on grass with that humongous serve. Its a shame the only serve he lost was the last game of the match.
Aditya Sarma Roddick is quite good in fast courts, it's just that there's another guy that's been a roadblock for him his entire career.
This match was epic! I remember watching it live and being on the edge of my seat. In my opinion, I put this match right there with the 2008 final. I think the 2008 final will always be remembered simply for the fact that it was Nadal on the other side of the net from Roger. The history those two had leading up the 2008 final, and the climax of that 5th set will always be remembered. But the 2009 final was just as epic. It was a heartbreaking loss for Andy, and although I was rooting for Roger, I felt terrible for Andy. I wouldn't have been disappointed had he won this match.
Scott Cho clearly you're a bit of douche
+Aditya With him losing, there's no other scenario possible;-)
Much respect to Roddick for playing the greatest game of his career. At this point in his career, he was just an after thought when compared to the Fed-Nadal rivalry, as well as an up and coming Nole.

I've always been an ultra Federer fan, but this might have been the only match I remember I was desperately supporting Andy. He deserved so much. Heartbreaking.
Same here. Roger was my favorite player overall but as an American I still loved Andy and couldn’t root against him in this match. Such a heartbreaking loss, the only time I was ever mad Roger won a match.
Roger gave all he had in 2019 too. Djoko gave all he had in 2023. Tennis is tough.
Let’s be honest Roddick is a very poor player… except from his service he’s really not good… he looks like an amateur almost every time… he’s really bad honestly…
7:02 "Oh my god" Lmao
Almost 10 years later I still remember that so much.
Roddick choked there, but still the best match he ever played.
I came here looking for this comment hahahah. It's great when a commentator is a fan of the game
i have to admit, I was like did Becker just say oh my god, lmao
Little overreaction XD
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To me, this is the match that broke Roddick's heart. I've never seen statistics for a match so in favor of the losing tennis player. First serve %, both service winning %, etc. I think I remember a post-match analysis showing ALL major stats in Roddick's favor. Yet Roger - nothing but magic could've managed this win.
That's actually false. When Roddick flubbed that volley, the stats were pretty much equal in both of the first two sets. Up to that point, Roddick had been remarkably clutch to be on the edge of going two sets to love up despite not playing better (or worse) than Federer. After that, Federer was clearly the better player in the third (Roddick only won 3/32 points on return in that set), Roddick was the better player in the fourth, the fifth was equal until Federer saved double BP, then he was the better player and eventually wore Roddick out and won.
Federer won more points and return points blah blah blah. The first set was a ridiculous steal for Roddick.
Federer won more points this match than Roddick did, so no it's not a steal. In comparison Federer lost to Nadal in the Australian Open that year and had won more points.
in short, roddick lost his focus when he was about to win the second set after that one mistake, from which he couldn't recover quickly enough.
+Arch Hades Yes but that was only 1 point.
i love how i m watching this 10 years later- i know the outcome and everything and my heart is still racing at match point
Here after what just happened at Wimbledon and it makes me feel a little better. Only a little.

same here man. Such a pity losing TWO championship points
hahahahahah lol
Kinda the same scenario happened in this match, meaning the better player lost. Roger winning 2 tie-breaks and 1 break of serve. The 4 setpoints in the 2nd set tie-break will hunt Rodick for the rest of his life just like those two Champion points will hunt Roger...both happened on the same court exactly 10yrs apart! And even more, striking similarities both matches ended on a forehand shank.
Djokavic owns Federer
I’m a Federer fan and I find myself rooting for Roddick in these highlights. Even though this broke Sampras’ record, I hurt more for Roddick than I feel joy for Federer. I wish I could give Roddick 2009 Wimbledon and give Federer 2019 Wimbledon.
And Djokovic the 2013 French open 😔
Me too and as an American I was always rooting for Fed in their matches other than 2006 U.S. Open final in 2009 Wimbledon. I think we’re really separates the two is their mental game and their ability to play the best when it matters the most, which Roddick struggled with, he got broken serve in the last game and he shanked the ball at the last point.
And Baghdatis 2006 AO
7:00 Roddick accidentally hits ball away from him

i always thought he was commenting on the immense pressure of the situation. but looking back, I wonder if he was worried they would call him on a fault.
It's Boris Becker
I think Becker realised just how nervous Roddick was in that moment

10 years later federer knows how roddick felt
Relax...
The mistake that federer did is that he didn't work his physic after 2009. The talent doesn't mean all . I think if he worked on his physic after 2009 he would win 30 slam or more Even djoko or nadal are in their best

Man still can't watch this without crying. Andy was so good throughout this tournament. Still remember him going into the Murray match as an underdog and killing him. This match broke Andy. Guy gets one break and wins the championship. Unreal.
This happened Roger playing against djokovic so many times like 2015 us open and 2019 wimbledon. Life is not fair.
I thought Roddick was quite lucky in many matches leading up to the final that year.
Also if Nadal was fit that year Roddick wouldn't have even been this close.
Roddick didn't kill Murray at all. It was a tight match Roddick just had a bit more luck & won via tiebreaks which he relied so heavily on throughout this tournament then ironically lost the final in the opposite manner but still Federer scored 10 more points than Roddick in this match overall despite serving a game less than Roddick.
When people say "Roddick only had his serve broken once" he had the fastest serve in the game!! He did the least he could in his career with the serving weapon he had.
The last ball is same situation on 2019 Wimbledon final
booboochacha yes. I’m wondering why ? Is that bcz pressure?

Way to go Wimbledon team, just gloss over the sets Andy won and show the ones Rogi won, since you know, those are the only ones that mattered in this FIVE set match.
your point?
English fawning over Fed is worse than any other country.
Some of worst crowds.
Australian much better
@@CaLMCee go and watch australian open final highlight of 2017 between federer vs nadal.... they didnt even bothered to show the highlight of sets in which federer won
@@CaLMCee I agree. I'm sick of the Wimbledon crowd and I'm British. Most of them cheered Roger over their own countryman this year. And they don't like Novak much and I strongly suspect its only because he is a threat to their darling Roger and his 20 slams (which he deserved clearly, not taking that away from Fed!).
Put it this way, if Novak came on court dressed in a white suit like that he would have been ridiculed.
me, wanting to watch the match:
commentators: "Roddick took the first three sets 6-4 7-5 6-3. We join the action in the lounge room, after the match."
LOL
The shot at 06:22 (6-5 second set tie-break) effectively cost roddick the Wimbledon trophy.
The shot at 7:11 was the weakest forehand I’ve ever seen that should’ve been put away.
Yet again... Into the 11th final of Wimbledon...
Roger Federer making history in Sunday...
All the best for Sunday 2k17
Wimbledon Finals 👍👆💪🙌
Back here after 2019 Wimbledon men's final
This should have been Roddick's. He was up a set, had 4 set points in the second, and was serving at 6-5 in the tie-break. Heartbreaking for him.
Roger at 35 is playing much better than 8 years ago. For anyone that knows something about tennis, compare this match to the 2017 Australian open final.
I agree, 6 months away and he came back with a powerful backhand technique.
pizzaboy Yes, it's increadible that he was able to make such a change in such short time. Of course he's always had a fantastic and unique wrist action in his backhand, but he's managed to make it a standard shot now.
Plus tempo has gone up in the last 15 years. If 2002 Roger were to step in a time machine and go straight to 2017, it would take him months of practise before he could reach third rounds;-)
Better technique..Yes. But better overall? Hell No! You have to see that Fed is more physically resound during his heydays.
+Edgar Injury wise you are right. But don't forget Raffa and he were the best players on the planet in Australia this year. Both having fought a few five setters to reach the final, and then another five sets against each other fighting for every point. You have to be mega fit to do that, don't you agree?
pizzaboy6877 watch 2003 houstan masters cup federer vs agassi and tell me how good his bachand was in that match
Back to here for 2019 Wimbledon
Both ended up in same way
How fitting that Roddick lost this with a forehand shank, and Federer loses the 2019 final in the exact same way.
Should give credit to Mirka for coming out and watching a pressure match while being 7 or 8 months pregnant with her first set of twins..
Should give credit to Mirka for coming out and shouting at the opponent to disrupt their focus #ApologisetoStan
+Tig Don't spoil his Hollywoodlike worshipping of celeberities XD
+kabob I didn't even know Roger has had one affair, let alone more affairs. XD
LOL take this W sir
I never said pregnancy wasn't a big deal. I said she doesn't deserve credit for anything other than being pregnant. She showed up, didn't puke and didn't shit herself. Congratulations.
She doesn't deserve credit for anything Roger has accomplished. Roger accomplished it, not her. He has made her life a fairy-tale, not the other way around. He could dump that lumpy bitch tomorrow and have 12 supermodels lined up to suck his dick.
Saying wife deserves credit for her husbands success is like saying a caddy deserves credit for a golfer winning a championship.
Roddick was and is my favorite player of all time. This match effectively destroyed me for over a month
0:01 Everything this man does embodies elegance whether that be his shot making style, footwork or walking like hes at a fashion show
Is this video of the highlights of the Wimbledon 2009 final, or Federer's best points in the final? Why are first set and fourth set highlights not shown in this video?! I'm a Roger fan, and I love that he won this match, but come on! Andy Roddick never played a better match in his life! This video is disrespectful to him!

I agree with u bro...
Very Disappointed....

Of course Andy played a better match in his life lmao
It says extended highlights but is missing 2 sets
Was thinking the exact same thing. This is the final highlights, not just Fed. Roddick played unbelievable.
Surely Roddick played better when he won something
Watching after Federer‘s last match at Laver Cup !!!!!
Oh my God. A classic line.
How does Roger look so composed even after an epic match like that? It's almost as if he didn't break a sweat
Only saw fed sweat one time. And it was one of those charity matches. I've never seen him breathe "hard" either come to think of it. Perfect form and finesse for the sport.
Weird to think how a decade later, in 2019, Federer had a Wimbledon final against Djokovic in which he lost in the same circumstances to which Roddick lost here.
Stats heavily in favour of Roddick, critical missed opportunities by Roddick and almost nothing given away on serve by Roddick until the end of the match. Yet he ended up the runner up, much like Federer in 2019.
Swings and roundabouts eh
Zoomye and Rodger shanked the ball on the last point just as Roddick did.
Karma.
I was thinking the same thing, they’re eerily similar, as if this was foreshadowing it in a way
And Andy is barely older than Roger here.
@@systemafunk but roger runs faster than nole,he just choked
That backhand overhead at 6-5 in the 2nd set tiebreak was championship point. And Roddick blew it.
Nah it was set point?
It was an impressive win for Federer and heart-broken loss for Roddick.
Federer hit 50 aces this match. That's about as many Isner hit in the 2nd longest Wimbledon match in history. It just shows how good Federer's serve can be.
What a match . 12 years later it still holds suspense. I’m speechless at the excitement Federer still has about returning to competitive tennis in March 2021.
6:20 Roddick lost the tournament
Not if Federer wins the last 3 sets
To think that RF won 5 more GS in next 13 years and still stayed at the top of tennis fans ❤️ hearts.. incredible.
Jeez the second set tiebreak! That changed everything
Roddick was in full form. Tough luck.
Still can't believe that he managed to win only 5 Grandslams in the next 13 years. Still, he's the greatest of all time to me. Vamos! 🇨🇭
Damn, can u imagine this was the first tennis match i watched when i was around 10 and i desperately wanted andy to win just because he was underrated nd i kinda like his name...
Classic..
the way Pete Sampras stood after Federer broke his record....says it all... he did not look happy. Pretty sure he was rooting for Roddick.
spideyh2000 Pete Sampras came to see Federer win the Slam and before the match said he was hoping Federer would break his record
I mean.. they're both American after all. Of course he would want the American to win. Doesn't mean he wasn't happy for Fed tho.
Aaron M Sampras actually wanted Federer to beat his record
I'm sure he just wanted Federer to win it and be done with the whole thing. Imagine Federer losing here and then Pete has to show up at yet another GS final at the US Open or the Australian Open the following year. Just get it over with.
Amen
I have watched this match live on TV for almost 5 hours without taking single break in between. It was one of the Best Grandslam final of all time in tennis history.
Federer's seventh straight final that is amazing
Lendl did height at us open
who else is here after seeing the 2019 final?

heartbreaking.
I remember watching this live on tv. Can't believe this was 11 years ago already...
This was Roddick's best chance to win Wimbledon.
1:0 in sets and 6:2 in tiebreak in 2nd set and Rodick lost it.I almost cry every time when i remember it
2019 best WIMBLEDON FINAL EVER
I remember watching this in my house when I was 13 years old. In China it was about 2 am when the game was finally over. I love Federer, he is definitely GOAT. Really glad that he regained the energy this year. US Open, 20th Champion! LETS GO!
6:19 Biggest miss of Roddick's career.
up 6-2 in that tiebreak, he makes the huge mistake of chipping Fed's short shot to Fed's forehand, short and in middle of the court. That's a shot he wishes he had back. Fed's return of serve on that point was miraculous -- threw his racquet out and was rewarded. But, it still fell short. I almost felt Roddick coulda run around it and tried for a forehand winner.
The miss that cost him Wimbledon in my opinion. If he was to make that I believe he would have won in 3 or 4 sets
Biggest miss for the US in the past 10+ years.
I saw this final like the one in 2008 with Rafa (I suffered horrors) ... I honestly think that Roger is going to come back very hungry and with accumulated energy after this horrendous 2020. At least 1 more Wimbledon is ready for him, and he is still with chances of another GS ... he's superhuman
It's been 12 years. Feels like yesterday
Coming back from the 2008 lose, and the 2nd n 3rd tiebreaks, just incredible, which showed how decisive Federer is. In the 2nd, it's really unbelievable that Federer survived from 2-6 against such a huge serve player like Roddick, and the 3rd, Federer also proved the heart of a champ, only one point can he dominate the match, born champion. I'm always encouraged by the spirit of Roger in this match, just more than tennis.
Roddick playing out of his mind against Federer. One of the best matches I ever watched. I was rooting for Federer, but the underdog side of me wanted to see Roddick pull it out.
this was the best Wimbledon Final in the history!
Anyone noticed the similarity Roddick missed the shot and Federer missed the shot the same way in Wimbledon 2019 final versus Novak Djokovic. History repeats itself. Amen
Roddick really should have won this one, he deserved this game more than Federer - and i am a big fan of Federer. Must've killed him, he was so close to his 2nd Grand Slam, against the GOAT, who always beat him, in the most prestigious tournament - and he choked :(
I thought who ever won was the guy who deserved and wanted it most
Tennis is one of the fairer Sports on this planet. The winner usually deserved it. Also in this match.
He ain't the GOAT.
@@jondavwal13 He is until someone (Nadal) surpasses him in GS titles, but till then he surely is the GOAT.
Feel for roddick!! Heart break he got broken only once that too in final game
This was so painful to watch again. I remembered every point as if it were yesterday. Why did I do this to myself??? I knew it would sting. Every time there was a momentum shift in Andy's favor, I foolishly believed that somehow the outcome would change.
I still remember that missed BH volley from Roddick like it was yesterday. Damn such an epic miss!
Who knew 10 years later Federer would be still playing like this at the highest level with the same level of enthusiasm and intensity 🔥 #GOAT
I thought of this match a lot after the 2019 final, especially in how Roger lost three Wimbledon finals to Novak in eerily similar fashion to how A-Rod lost three of his own to Fed, the last one each being in such brutal fashion.
@@hiwayman981 Except Roddick was in his prime- 21, 22, 26. Federer was way past his prime 32, 33, 37.

I remember watching this match. My heart broke for Roddick.
3:39 That Veronica Vaugh is one fine piece of ace, I know from personal experience.

One of the best match in Wimbledon history. I watched complete match at that time..
I'm a Fed fan but Roddick really should've won this one. He was the better player that day. The 2nd set tiebreak loss was a gift to Federer.
One of those finals where the better player on the day ended up losing. Roddick played so well, but Federer just wouldn't lie down. That's why he's a legend.
I remember this match! So nail biting!
That “ALLEZ!” at the end of the second set is awesome
Best Andy ever played at Wimbledon... a shame he didn't win. One of the great Finals, IMO.... VERY under-rated all-time Final matches at W.
As big a Rafa fan as I am, I fail to see how this match wasn't remembered as the best Wimbledon final in recent history. The 2008 final was incredible, but this was much closer, and Roddick was throwing everything at Federer. Loads more tense moments and pressure, and neither player lulled at all. Up until the 2018 semi-final between Nadal and Djokovic, I always thought of this final as perhaps the best match I'd seen at Wimbledon.
Anyone here feeling nostalgic watching Roger's videos on the verge of his retirement?
Wimbledon finals are always iconic aren't they
