I agree with the sentiment, but it is exactly the right kind of commentary and how journalists should have been. The young players today, already people are asking whether Alcaraz can emulate Nadal's numbers. He may very well could, but to raise that spectre now is ridiculous.
Agassi's ability to take the ball so early was beautiful to watch.
I am lucky to watch the era of Sampras against Agassi, so i liked Agassi earlier hit but i liked more the athleticism of Sampras, that is why Sampras was my icon back in 80/90 and first part of 21st like until 2004

Incredible match between two generations, two enormous players.
Nadal in 2005 had a fracture in one of the bones of the foot necessary to be able to walk. Doctors told him that he had to quit competitive tennis. After visiting many specialists, the treatment was the use of special insoles to be able to walk and run. But his knees would suffer and he would have many more injuries, he has played 3 years less than Nole and Roger .. find videos of how he played before this injury. It was amazing to see him play. Despite everything, he is an exceptional tennis player. I wonder what would have happened if he did not have this injury that caused him so much
Probably 2-3 more wimbledon titles and masters on hard, 1 london title and at least 2 more AO`s

And the most astonishing fact is Nadal was only 19 back then! So fast, so strong, so good!

Gezzz could you imagine how good he’d be if he could still move like this. What’s also amazing about nadal and what makes him the goat is how he has proved to still be a champion even though his style has changed completely over the years. His ability to adapt and continuously improve is astonishing
I personally think he’s better now. Many of his missed lobs in this match would have been surgically precise shots nowadays!

Always wanted to see how Agassi would fare against this golden generation and to my surprise, he did better than expected and he's not in his prime against a 100% Nadal

Agassi still a joy to watch with his spectacular game - the cleanest shots ever, taking the ball so early! If it hadn´t been for chronic problems with his spine, he could well have competed with Federer and Nadal for two or three more years, at least on hardcourt.
Yup the spine issues and all the cortisone shots to it took its toll. Your not really supposed to be taking shots like that to the spine and have it go through that type of physical exertion

You're mistaken if you think that ball striking is what sets Federer and Nadal apart. Yes they are the most talented, but it's the mental game that sets them above the rest (except Djokovic). Agassi didn't have the mental game at all, and that was the issue, not his injuries. Djokovic is the perfect example of what can be achieved with sheer determination and focus.

Agassi had the best eye-hand coordination imo,and he had the ability to pick the ball up easier than anyone. He moved into the return and drove it back hard, sometimes harder than the serve itself sometimes.

I've watched this match a few times over the past 15 years! Has ANYONE been able to make Rafa run so hard on the court ?! Btw this is Rafa before all his major injuries and probably at his peak mobility.

i think rafa was world no.2 here already. andre takes the ball on the rise and stands inside the service line which takes away rafa’s recovery time, plus he is the cleanest ball striker. too bad he was playing with a back injury in this match that slowed him down.

Injuries did not diminish Rafael Nadal, it is simply the passage of time, in this match I think he was 20 years old, now he is 35.
Despite the fact that he is the player in the top 10 of the history that makes more physical display on the court, he is still up there winning tournaments.

What a treat for Toronto on that day-the crowd went from pro Agassi to loving Nadal’s never give up attitude and his wonderful style and abilities and the rest as they say is history…..

And 69% of Federer's Finals won in all tournaments are on hard courts.

@@innosanto Not really. It's a myth. He won 2 hard court masters titles in 2005. He played terribly in hard court grand slams until 2009 AO for some bizzare reason.

I have never seen another player, who took Nadal's topspin baseline shots on the rise that early, the way Agassi was doing in this match, and I mean he was REALLY taking them early and directing them back with interest, it was like he was playing ping pong, not tennis. And he was 35 years old then against the young 19 yr old Nadal then. Amazing hand and eye coordination Andre had.

It’s one of my biggest regrets that I never saw Agassi live. He lost this but his performance was astounding really given his age. GOAT, for me personally just for everything that he brought.

Nadal with his heavy topspin game changed up how the game was played.
The topspin started to become big due to new string technology. Nadal grew up with those strings and was best accustomed to them. If he had played in the 1980s he obviously wouldn't have had this many Grand Slam titles.

Wow, it’s amazing how much Rafa has improved since then. The amount of short balls he was playing back then meant that he had to run so much to recover. 2020 Rafa would destroy this Rafa. Amazing.
No rafa 2020 is not able to run as much. And wouldn't save all the points he did here. He is better though tebbistically. So it would be a different match.

This is what I call the change of the guard, from one goat to the next. Andre knew he left tennis in great hands and got to experience and play against someone that was going to bring something new to the sport that no one had seen and could handle. Not even himself.
Yeah, so sad that Rafa can't say the same, the future of tennis seems dark.
@@norm-bb3bb I wouldn't necessarily say that. I see very good young talent. Now will they surpass the current generation in # of grand slams that the big 3 have. Hard to find out. But I do see a huge leap in quality tennis that the current players are playing. To me its isane to see player like Felix, or Tistapas, Medvedev and many others like Opelka and Cressy serve and vollyer incredible players even Fritz. Tennis will be left in great hands once the big 3 retire and then another race will be on. Thats how its always been. haha

Agassi is the best ball striker the sport has ever seen. Hand eye coordination is godlike....He would have adapted to playing the 2007-2020 era against Fed, Nadal, Djoker a lot better than Sampras would have
Between the dates you mentioned, Sampras would still pose the bigger threat on grass but everywhere else, Agassi worries the big 3 more. Then again, seeing Murray hurt Novak on grass, have to think Agassi vs Novak/Nadal = tasty.

Serve too weak. They say he was 5"11 but you can see he is really more like 5'9, 5'10. Which is automatically a disadvantage for his serve, against the big 3 who are all 6 ft plus.
The thing is, he won I think 4 or 5 of his 8 GS titles late on his career. Coincidentally, that was also the times the sport transition into a more baseline power game. There is no doubt Agassi would fare better, the man won slams as a pure baseliner in an era where Serve and Volley tennis was the norm. Imagine him in 2000's as a 23 or 24 year old. Him and Federer were the best offensive players in the game...

Nadal is in great physical shape. Agassi could barely move.
Rafa took advantage of the modern technology though and got a hair transplant. Agassi got a rug and lost an RG final as a result.
Novak is the only one who can claim to be the true "heir".

I am so glad Agassi got to play Nadal and Federer. It just shows the quality of tennis before 2000 and after 2000, it must have been amazing to watch live tennis before 2000 also. So a great quality of tennis Agassi played. Of course no question about Nadal.

It's amazing how much tennis has changed. In 2005, Agassi at 33 years old was long past his prime and physically challenged. Nowadays, Rafa and Nole, at 35 and 34 are favourites in every tournament they play.
@8:00, after being cheated a point, a typical Rafael Nadal. Perhaps the GOAT of tennis. 20 GSs and counting. Rafa missed 2020 Wimbledon because of covid-19 and didn't participate in the 2020 US Open.
This is the biggest asset of Nadal. His mentality. And also his great physical strength and fast legs.
Strength so allows stamina and the very good top spin.

We really don't know how many more GS this dude will bag before he retires. But injury will be his greatest nemesis. Judging from Rafa's latest interviews, he may hang it up by the end of this year. We know Rafa, unlike most players, he doesn't care about the records and that is why he is so likable. But Rafa will most likely win 1 more GS by the end of 2022 and there is a slight chance that he will win the calendar GS of 2022. Again, only an injury can derail Rafa from doing that.
If you haven’t read Agassis book Open, I will highly recommend it.
One of the best biographies book I have read.
