Some quick tips. Don't drive/cruise below 3000rpm. It will overheat, it needs rpms to cool. Don't idle for long, without water it gets to temp really fast. Idea is to be back on throttle once you hit the apex of a corner, with the weight over the tires. Car will drive different with a full tank vs 1/4 tank. Lastly, when going downhill into a tight left or right, slow down before the corner. Otherwise all that weight going forward when braking will make it a real bugger to turn. Good luck! Have fun!
JIMMY BOY CONGRATULATIONS 🎊 ON THIS CHIC, I'M PORSCHE GUY FROM I WAS 9 YEARS OLD,UNTIL THIS DAY AT 68 IN MAY. DIE-HARD 911s FAN OLD GENS TO THE PORSCHE OF TODAY. KNOW U GONNA MAKE IT YOUR OWN JIMMY O
That’s bs man. If your engine is overheating just because you driving it under 3000rpm it means you have an oil pressure problem. I drove a 930 turbo on a casual speed and had no overheating problem whatsoever.
How do the old busses that can barely go over 40mph not over heat then? As long as there is a form of airflow going to the car they are fine it’s when they are stationary that they over heat. Which is what you see in the line to get into a car show loads of busses pulled in and beetles being pushed because they’ve got to hot just sitting there
Wait so you're telling me that's not a normal thing in left hand drives? Feels good to drive every manual here in Australia with the ignition on the right and stick on left :)
@@shyshydad Not at all haha. Porsche and Saab are the only brands I know of that have cars with a turn key ignition in a spot other than to the right of the steering wheel in the US.
I always thought Adam would’ve been the first one to get a air cooled Porsche. I guess it makes since that the VW boy found a way 😂 so stoked on this thing
Adam is that kid that wants perfection too bad, while also not wanting to pay the price, so he'll probably never find what he wants. Either you're ready to do some restoration or you're ready to pay full price
Can't wait to see Spoon working on a classic Porsche. Also can't wait to see what color you eventually paint it. I'm looking forward to a future episode of Hoonigan where Vinny and Brian drool over what you turn it in to.
never lift imid corner in an old 911, jimmy learning the hard way lol. Glad there was nothing to hit! So stoked for you Jim. Since I can remember my dream car has been a g body. My dad has a 914 when I was little and I've been lusting after air-cooled Porsches ever since.
Trail braking on 911s helps a ton, you need to get weight over the front axle to get the extra grip since there's hardly weight up front on throttle. Mid corner throttle inputs are tough too since the weight hangs off the rear the car tends to act like a pendulum and you can spin pretty easy. Looking forward to the resto on this one! GL.
From people who I've talk to on track days have said that you want to use the weight transfer over the back tires to help put the power down and pull you threw the turn. Trail braking helps a lot but to much goes against the driving style of the 911. It's almost like drifting as you steer these cars with the throttle
Trail braking is a matter of setup. Rear engine stuff is quite simple. Turn in hard, get it rotating and stomp the gas. Smooth inputs on turn in make all the difference. Rear engine cars car a lot about upsetting the suspension.
I absolutely love this Porsche, my elementary school principal bought a red one brand new in 91-92 and I remember staring at that car every day and 30 years later I still love that car more than ever! Timeless~
“James” be looking real good in that machine! What an opportunity for you brother! I’m so stoked to see content with the Porsche! What a beautiful car!
Key on the left is about having your shifting hand free, so while you are firing up the car with your left hand, you can use the right one to put the car into gear with clutch and brakes in during the engine start up.
Jimmy - Oil is your friend with this, Well done, you got a steal!!! Keep the oil & plug's sweet, drive it - they do NOT do storage well (ask me how I know) & they're a damned good handling car..... Stoked for you Sir
I'm excited to hopefully see jimmy and the gang do a full tear down and respray/refresh on the Porsche once its state side hopefully give it that oem+ look while still being track capable
Stoked for you Jimmy! Cool car with a cool story. I work at a Porsche biased shop in southern NH if you need any help or have questions. Im happy to travel to help hahah
I don't know if you already said it but I think this widebody is from a 993 gt2. It looks very similar because the front end of the widebody almost reaches the lights and it doesn't go up to fill the entire fin or the wheel arch or whatever is called. Sorry for my english, spanish learner here... But man, love this thing, congrats!! And very enternatining video!
While I know you want to do the work your self but I highly recommend you send it to speed sport tuning and have them go through it and build the car for whatever you want to do with it.
Jimmy no matter the brand of chassis people watch the content for YOU AND THE BOYS VIBES. Is it awesome to see cool rad builds? yes but if you weren’t you (goofy, real, and positive) the content wouldn’t be there. You make this content just that much better. It’s so cool watching you and the boys through countless cars and a few shops now you’re living dreams out everyday. Big proud of you buddy enjoy your first Porsche and remember a broken part can just be the beginning of something great🫶🏼 all love from VA
Man, I love these old porsches. I would take one over any car. The fact that you bought this just made me want to tune in more and follow this build. Super jealous and stoked for you.
Fun fact: The key being on the left dates back to when Porsche was still a (relatively speaking) young company racing at Le Mans. The thought process is that you can turn the car on while putting the car in gear thus your able to get off the line quicker.
I love your new porsche... congrats 👏 I had a 72 vw super beetle with a built 2100 cc 90hp and it was fast. 25 hp shot nitrous. Lots of porche stuff .That was back in 1998. Injoy your success 🙌.
For lack of a better way of putting it at 6am before my first coffee.. The pure joy out "James" on those first couple tail happy corners was bloody awesome. Good way to start the day
I love how boxer-6 engines sound. Run them with true duals and they sound beefy and throaty. Run them with an H pipe and it keeps that but smooths it out. Run them with an X pipe or a single exit and they become screamers.
Purpose of the key on the left is mostly correct, the real reason is so it frees up your right hand for the shifter to get the car into gear half a second faster.
Buy some Dipetain while your here the stuff is brilliant to add to the petrol for cleaning out carbon inside your engine. You'll notice the car will run better. It used by the Irish army and their mechanic told me when he rebuilds the engines they are like new inside.
Something about Jimmy feels right in a 80s or 90s cars. When he drives some new cars it feels wrong. I see him I the future be rhe legend 80s and 90s car guy. Al the sick cars of the period
Even if it is a bit of a nugget by Porsche standards, this car looks so good, super awesome. The fact that its not perfect will make it so much better to drive too
just hit up porsche and be like "ayo big daddy P, whens the next shipment to america? and how much for a pitstop in ireland" 🤣 so fucking stoked for this. a genuine lifelong dream car and i know damn well you're gonna do it close to how i would which makes me even more excited
I'm so happy for you! The look on your face says it all! I'm beyond excited to see you bring this poor 911 back to life! Also, please keep those badass Meisters!
This 911 has so much potential! Seeing how excited you are reminds me of my first time driving a 911 There is a reason I choose Porsche over other sports cars like Ferrari. It’s an everymans car and u can beat the piss out of them and it will still love u!!! Congrats 🎉 🎉
I know the feeling, just bought me a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet, only 109,455. So I immediately had an IMS on it, brand-new Michelin tires. Can't wait to get it next week.
When u mentioned the car feeling better the more you beat on it, this beautiful car has a will to be pushed further and harder, love the auora this car gives off.
Don't know if it's been said already but you need to change the twin distributor or get it serviced asap, there's a tiny rubber belt in it and if it snaps you're only running on 6 spark plugs instead of 12.
The key location was about 80% correct. By turning the car on with your left hand I allows your right hand to put the car in gear that’s where the time savings comes in. Not the distance your hand has to travel 🤙🏽
Such a musical engine I was kind of worried with the idle clips from the last video that the exhaust would be too heinous. I could totally see jimmy dailying this the way he used to put miles on his red 33.
That year of 911(964) and the older 911s had that lift off oversteer handling. They used the semi trailing arm rear suspension that likes to toe out when lifting off throttle.
Jimmy (excuse me, James) we need you in Japan. Idealy with someone overly excited for it like Dustin Williams. 😂❤ I think you would enjoy it as much as Ireland.
Unbelievably happy for you Jimmy! I swear we have such identical taste in cars, and FD and an old 911 are on my list of somewhat "obtainable" dream cars to own. I'll get there one day :)

Ignition is on the left so you can put the car in gear and start the car at the same time.👌

It pains me knowing we won’t have content on this thing while it crosses over ! Living a dream through these videos right now!
Big Jim needs to learn that with a Porsche, you brake LATE, and turn in LATE...late apex bud! You got this!
It's gonna look so sick in yellow.

Lemans, LHD, put the key in with the left hand, shift into first at the same time with the right hand
What a beast! With the "Event Horizon" history. Maybe it was in hell like the spaceship int his movie? Congrats sir!
race alignment, tires, and basic suspension will help it a lot
Try bliping the the throttle on downshifts. Revmatching will save the engine in the long run
Genuinely so stoked for this, my absolute favourite in your fleet now! Love it
It’s actually on the left so you can start the car AND put it into gear
That thing is so sick.. What a come up 💯🔥
Jimmy is living my dream man.
Never thought I’d see the day my boy jimmy rocking a Lonsdale hoodie😬
