He does the same shit with every car "I'm just going to enjoy it for a while" video later "Tearing apart the xx" Can literally predict a week's worth of videos when he gets a new car
Agreed. Definitely one of the least surprising oakes videos ever. This might be less surprising than a video about a new car that has been or will be parked in the corner long term lol
Watching you guys drop this engine is entertaining. However as a previous owner of a 91 C4, and having the engine out twice I set here wanting to give you tips. I guess since the AC was not charged it didn't matter, but usually you just unbolt the compressor from the engine and hang it out over the rear quarter. A known point of failure that doesn't appear to be addressed is with the twin distributors. There is a small drive belt that connects them. The upgrade or modification is putting a vent tube between them that I guess help heat buildup escape which without can deteriorate the belt and it breaks. Another thing I would inspect is the short flexible hose on the slave cylinder. Mine leaked and caused my clutch to slip. It may have just been a fluke that that happened to my vehicle, but I would inspect it while you are in there. Glad to see a channel playing and working on an air cooled Porsche. They are few and far between. I would guess as your ownership progresses you will soon find it to be one of the most enjoyable vehicles you have ever owned.
Honestly protip from a mech thats done the old European rebuild. Order the Haynes manual for it. It's a great basic breakdown of the whole car and the systems. More importantly terminology they use for parts will be a huge help sourcing new stuff or new old stock. I did it for 89 911 and it's a huge help.
**air cooled 911 advice** One thing I can't stress from working on Porsche and building/restoring them. One of the biggest mistakes I see with these is people overfilling them with oil! Please follow the specific filling procedure but also another bit of advice for you is when you replace the drain back tubes for the heads replace them with the 930 telescopic tubes makes life a lot easier for future maintenance. The hot air you mentioned in your footwell will be the blower hose has deteriorated around the coupler next to the drivers left ankle
The twin distributor works with one does the upper and the other does the lower. There are conversion kits for coil over plug but we've made massive numbers off of the original system
The twin plug set up for the M64 engine of the 964 was primarily due to the increased displacement (from 3.2 to 3.6) and the need to ensure that the car would meet the stringent CA emission standards--it allows the engine to burn fuel more efficiently leaving little or no unburned matter to be dealt with by the cat. It also helped increased HP of the engine.
@@negativeindustrial It's a dual rotor, single shaft distributor unit--the second distributor rotor is belt driven by the first rotor so they fire simultaneously.
Paint trays Jimmy. They're nice and low profile, and they'll sit on the lift arm. You do gotta poke some holes in the end though. But that's a phillips screwdriver away from being done. And yeah, a volvo electric power steering pump setup would probably be the best/easiest way to add power steering.
I knew it wasn't going to last long not touching the Porsche. Jimmy's OCD always gets the best of him. And I have to say I'm so stoked for the Porsche content.
The thing that you referred to as the pan is called tin surround /engine shroud. Also, iirc phil from driftworks uses 991 coils on his 964. But you do have to weld bosses on the valve cover to hold the coils in place
You can use gsxr/ hayabusa dumb coils or audi r8 / vag smart coils. Gotta get the short black ones tho and you have to shave one abit because it barely clears . Another option is to use a vr6 ignition block. They also put pit decent spark energy. My uncles 964 made 367 bhp n/a with a 3.8liter engine. With 997gt3 intake manifold with dbw, schrick cams and 50mm titanium valves on 93 octane.
Honestly loving this! I had a friend that was a Porsche master tech. (He's passed, sadly.) He always said the first step to any 911 engine repair was to drop the engine. He also said any Porsche tech worth anything could engine out a 911 in under an hour, and a half hour for really good ones. Keep doing what you're doing!
German engineering! You'll grow to love it! Just clean everything up and reseal the triangle of death, valve covers (don't over tighten!) Power coat the engine tin satin black. Congatulations, it's all pretty easy.
Jimmy has high IQ that why it seems straight forward. If you don’t believe me I know his mom would vouch he’s always been a smart kid🫡. Blaze the trail Jimmy O👀😤
Most euro cars of that era used a Bosch ecu of some description (VW, BMW, Volvo etc) basically still the first gen of injection systems. They had a simple 8 bit chip in them that couldn't cope with that much signals ( hence the few pins in the ecu plug) So they had to run a second one in parallel to cope with the 2nd sparkplug setup; beter known as Twinspark in the motorcycle world where this is fairly common. JDM brands like Honda being the (obvious) innovators in this, the euro brands following suit later. They often used DIS coils to facilitate the added sparks; a lot more compact solution. As mentioned it gives a more complete combustion. Which aides not only emissions but also Improves HP. I worked at a shop that converted single heads to Twinspark on large V-Twin Moto-Guzzi's. It made a significant improvement in both smoother running as well as improved performance. That's why adding a LINK is really useful in this case, being able to control that (old ecu's are really archaic in that sense) could make for a really smooth running engine. Get rid of the distributors and declutter the engine in the process, I'd say win-win. Upgrading a older engine like that is the coolest thing to me, making it better then when it left the factory..
The easy route for the power steering would be a Volvo/Ford electric power steering pumps, here in europe we use them on everything custom. 200 bucks and as close as plug and play adapting something could be. Those pumps came in the Volvo P1 platform, C30, C70, S40, i think they are pretty simple to find in the US, also saw a few mustand dudes using them in the US, and there is a lot of videos of people adapting them into their cars, i think adam used one in one of his. hope this helps, the porsche will be fire.
My uncle was a porsche master mechanic back in the 80s and 90s, so i actually got to help "work" on 911s and such when i was younger, mainly remove lugs and small things. Sadly he had a mini stroke a few weeks ago and a lot of his memory was affected.
Helpful comment honestly from someone who worked on air old campers my we call the shroud around the fan and the pan you want sandblasted is called Tin wear that's what's directs flow of air to the right places in the engine and controls temperatures most common oil leek push rod tubes you can buy new tubes that come at different lengths check yours first and push rod length they come with new seels
Spoon could probably make one of those engine mount trays from scratch out of tubing and look better then the factory one. you have all the dimensions you need from it and the car its self. unless it helps direct the air through the passages for the oil cooler if there is one on top like an old air cooled VW engine.
glad your taking that thing apart.. Its hard having a porsche and it having leaks and issues.. You just wana take the entire thing apart and make it great it again!
Had to sell mine because of kids that was in 2000, it was worth it, but man do I miss my polar silver on grey interior 911 964. It was a fun manual transmission that most people do not get anymore. It's all about the paddle shifters that can make that dual clutch shift so fast that it might create a worm hole. Plus air cooled engines sound sooo different.
Makes me happy watching Steve learn and get to play with new toys reminded me of my first time using a lift and how excited I was someone trusted me using it 😂
I love the Porsche video's, I'm building a 78-911 right now, and have learned a ton from these. I'm doing all the work myself, and just ordered coil overs so I can lower it. Thanks guys.
I can just imagine Aidan in the corner -slowly rubbing his hands- Aha mmm can't wait to work some magic on this genre Make this bitch brand new dawg B)
Next time you're dropping an engine like this, please place a car tyre (without the wheels of course) on those wooden planks before dropping the engine on it. It will serve as some sort of cushion and it will minimise the strain the engine's weight will cause on parts like the headers (since it is sitting on it). We use this method pretty regularly in Nigeria.
Y'all kill it, super entertaining content! Love seeing y'all learning unfamiliar cars and would love to see that more often! Can't wait to see the exhaust Spoon comes up with!!!
Glad you guys just dove in because this is the quickest way to get familiar with it and the quickest way to get to the really fun parts. Also your just getting right into figuring out exactly what you wanna do and what needs done and then you should at least have a really good running solid reliable Porsche which is the biggest battle. After the drivetrain is situated it will be time for everyone's favorite part which is just cleaning up the exterior/ interior/ paint lights fitment wheels brakes and cool jimmy aesthetics and I can't wait to see it 👍
its cool seeing the similarities between the 964 and a modern 911. their engines sit in similar sub frames. almost like a cradle. ofc new 911's have evolved quite a bit, but its cool to see that the concept is still very similar.
Been a fan for a while but always been a German car guy myself. This car is top of the list to own and this makes me happy! Would have been easier to ship it to Scotland for me but **it happens.
The part you found at the begining is the top of the mecanism of your shifter...remove the center console and you will see where the part has to be mount. FYI I remove the entire shifter on my 964 to fit a CAE shifter which simplify a lot the mecanism... oem shifter is a nightmare...
Could possibly use the front diff empty space for the electric powersteering setup! also cut the back end off a disposable water bottle and youve got ur angled oil funnel.
I had an early 90's Ranger and it had dual plugs per cylinder for emissions. 1 set was on the exhaust side to try and burn as much as possible. Ran really clean.
Prius electric steering rack would maybe work. Very common the put on old vags. Doesn’t need ecu connection. Power and ground and it works. Search it up Jimmy, it’s very interesting

Its a twin spark system, the flame propagation from the one side of the cylinder takes long. With two plugs, the flame meets in the middle. combusting all the fuel quicker.
Nice ! I would do new hoses . Add link ecu . E85 kit clean out whole fuel system add plugs n wires n new gaskets n have spoon make nice 4inch exhaust kit . N enjoy it till October and start stacking up turbo etc for her for winter build .
Can’t wait for you to tear it down and see the cylinder sleeves! Also can’t wait for next year when it’s still leaking oil to see if you’ll tear it down again lol… welcome to air cooled Porsche ownership!
Before the flex funnel came out we would use cardboard , the paper floor mats from the dealer or 2 liter and gallon water jugs cut the ends off and open the cap to change oil that’s blocked like that was.
Dropping engines is so much easier then pulling them no matter the car I've always done it from the bottom subfram and motor out together then motor back on to subfram and back in so easy on most car in my opinion and you don't risk scratching nicely painted bays
Builder's sickness, we have all had it....."It needs to be done"😂 keep it up guys, Porsche are not complicated, born out of the the same mind that gave us VW
Jimmy's, "I just wanna enjoy it and drive it first". Is the equivalent of Adams, "This is just going to be a simple build."
the amount of times i have heard either of m.
💯 😂
Lmao, Nailed it honestly!

The fact that it made it a week without being semi disassembled is a mystery of its own.

Im assuming it was just to give LZ a chance to drive it, otherwise it wouldve been engine out first day hahaha

I swear this is the only car channel I will ever need, Jimmy and the crew are IT!!

@jimmyOakes it has a two stage ignition system on it. two diff timing setups
its great to watch. learning curve for all of us i suppose.
Its a twin spark system, the flame propagation from the one side of the cylinder takes long. With two plugs, the flame meets in the middle. combusting all the fuel quicker.
Electric PS conversions are very common. Some people use the pump setup from the 997 cup car, others use a kit that works off of a Toyota pump.

this is going to be a great build Cant wait
