TRAGIC DAY FOR ANY CAPTAIN !! FRUSTRATION AT THE HELM AT HAULOVER INLET | BOAT ZONE
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 кві 2024
- Haulover Inlet in Florida is a popular spot for experienced boaters seeking a thrill. Known for its challenging conditions and strong currents, the inlet connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway and is famous for its rough waves and strong winds, which can make boating hazardous. Despite the risks, many boaters are drawn to the inlet's challenging conditions and the opportunity to navigate through it.

SAD day for this captain. UNEXPECTED turn that could have led to injuries and loss of the boat.I'd appreciate if YOU could share advice on how to handle such situations, to assist our large audience in potential future incidents. Thank you in advance !!
I’m no captain however I would think getting the anchor out earlier and tying it to the bow would have been better.
Get on the radio and ask for HELP!
Don't put yourself in that situation. He took a vessel that had no business being there and asked it to do something it would have had trouble doing when it was new fifty years ago. The easy fix to this is to MAINTAIN your equipment.
I certainly am no expert and generally use smaller (16-18 ft) aluminum fishing boats on fresh water but have been boating accident for 50 years. I respect the water,I know it does not give a hoot about my safety so it is up to me. Maybe get the anchor out quicker, try to get the bow into the waves, and call the Tow Boat guys immediately. At least no-one was hurt, looks to be minimal damage to the boat but I wager one very bruised ego. Also do very extensive checks prior to casting off and get proper engine maintenance per the manufactures recommendations. If they lost power 10 miles out it could have been much worse. Set up a checklist and follow it prior to setting off.
No proper ground tackle, rode way too short, and tying it to a stern cleat. Well, that's landlubberly for sure.
Anchor from the bow. Keep bow pointed into surf. Have suffucient anchor line...80 to 100', so his anchor has a chance to deploy in the sand. Do not have your line tied/spliced as it appears.
That poor guy! He has no clue who to do.
The tow boat has an anchor off the bow while hooking up. Good example of the proper way to do things.
what a wonderful place 😅❤😊
Some deck hand he has there, they sure know how to keep a boat seat warm.
At least nobody was hurt, except the guy sitting on the deck who looked checked out. They're lucky to have gone up on a sand beach instead of into rocks that would have caused serious damage and potential loss of life. Credit to the Captain for continuing to stay present and observant, trying to think of solutions. IMO I would have set the anchor earlier, off the bow, and held it until it caught, which clearly is challenging in soft sand. As soon as the motor was dead, I would have pulled out lifejackets and insisted everyone have them on. Otherwise, I don't think there's much he could have done.
I do agree!
Agreed with anchor drop from the bow!! As for frustration he was, who wouldn’t? The fact that it looks like he kept his cool and stayed with the boat and tried like hell to get it turned into the waves I commend him. Looked like a soft beach and everyone walked away. Seeing others they have not a care in the world. Great video!
I'm watching the pedestal seats in the beginning. Was sure they were about to snap off just wallowing around. Plus, is an older boat with an inboard. I'm guessing not a lot of upkeep was done.
I never find joy watching anyone go thru that. The tow bill is equal to the maintenance he'll need to have done to get his boat able to run securely again. That's his pride and joy and I hope it's running soon again.
Gotta drop that anchor as soon as motor died. And for God's sake, never anchor so the stern is taking the waves!!!
There are worst places to end up than that sandy beach friends.
More than the boats worth
The video is so beautiful, the waves are great, thank you for the video
Some days it just doesn’t pay to get out of bed.
The cap had a long time to throw an anchor and have not done so. He landed like half a mile south from the inlet. He had plenty of time.
He probably had a anchor that was for a 15 foot boat with a 40 foot line lol typical dumbass.
Parabéns aos socorrista 🙏🏼🇧🇷🇧🇷
I have one in Venezuela ( Wellcraft Sportsman 248 ) With twin YAMAHA 150 Hp, Four stroke and its a great boat. I feel sad for this oldie. I don't believe it has suffered too damage and I hope to see them against Haulover Inlet in another chance.
If the Muppet had anchored the bow into the waves, He wouldn't have been pushed onto the beach.
This wellcraft is literally on offer up
Just like vehicles, some people dont know what they are doing 😂
what would I do....maybe for starters, not go out when I'm drunk. All three look, act, appear to be wasted.
Good that its soft sand with no stones. So the boat will probably be ok.
The dumbass had his outdrive Fully out didn’t even have the common sense to raise it
You wrote that Fast Recovery came back to recover "their anchor". Whose anchor was it, the disabled craft's or Fast Recovery's? The phrasing makes me think it was Fast Recovery's.
Happened to me but lucky I was in a 15' jon boat, on a lake.
the 2 passengers.....
How exciting to be #1.
welcome !!
Jumped overboard and swam the hell away
It can happen to any captain, but it doesn't have too. Captain fail to recognize the danger. One must be aware that, in case of lose of propulsion, the wind, waves and current may drift the boat. In this case, the combination led them to shore. Captain should've droped anchor sooner. A secure anchor point on a boat isn't the stern. It's the bow. That is why, on my boat I have a cable which is called, according to weakipedia Hawser, here we call it Boça, which is use for this purpose. I use it for anchoring, but it is designed to tow me if needed. I consider this captain a lucky C because not every inlet has a perfect landing spot like the one here. No damage has been seriously done to the boat, only the captain's pride was hurt in this video, which is good. Well, there was a slight back flip while one of the passengers was trying to get out, other than that. I hope everyone is fine.
The wellcraft guy on the phone: Hey man, you know how much the tow going to charge me?....$600?!?!......WHAT?!?....Let it sink..
Anchor time !
He had the wrong size anchor and too short of a rope even if he had the correct equipment, he still would not known how to anchor the boat.
Beautiful vintage Wellcraft! Never mind captain, these happen
Very nice boat👍🏿🤙🏿
Looks like they didn't even have lifejackets. Very unprepared
if you dont mind me asking, once they were able to tow the boat back into the open water, why didn'y the captain and his passengers get back on the boat, or werent they allowed to get back on the boat?
You have to be ready to drop anchor and the first sign of trouble. This guy was not ready nor did he have an appropriate anchor line length that should have been attached at the bow. As far as cost, if he had towing insurance it would not cost anything. No insurance, probably $1000.
I feel bad for the guy. Hard lesson learned but thankfully everyone was alright, even his boat survived.
Rip the wallet, I bet they charged $1000’s
Small boats like that are susceptible to more abuse. Coming down hard off of a big wave can jar and break numerous things. Only suggestion I have is to purchase a box anchor and maybe it would have stopped him from being beached.
Is that clowns cell phone glued to his ear
@ 8:17 was that someone IN THE WATER IN THE INLET??? tO THE STARBOARD/RIGHT FRONT of the tow-boat???
Nesse caso tinha que soltar a âncora pra ele girar e ficar aproado com a onda, aí vai subindo aos poucos até chegar na areia. Sorte não ter pego uma onda grande na popa
Captain should have dropped anchor with bow into the waves. Would have absorbed the energy a little better.
Is that George the animal steel ?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
George no brains tin
So how much for the tow?
I think it was actually a notsowellcraft.
Huh, I guess there is such a thing as a bad day on the water.
Make sure to keep all the necessary safety and emergency equipment on board. A proper tow line could've been helpful getting him to a safer place. I'm sure someone would've helped.
drop the hook
Should've bow anchored it, earlier.
He obviously doesn’t have the right anchor undersized with too short of a rope and definitely did not know how to use it even if he had the right anchor and line.
Is that the lead singer from Korn?
I would of anchored into the waves and called sea tow
The PIC helmsman (probably owner) (let's not call him a captain please) was being foolish pushing the boat when on the beach. He is really lucky he didn't crush his foot or break his tibia or knee by falling.
Does anyone know what the tow off the beach would have cost ?
Lucky
Most of these people have no business owning a boat. This is going to be one expensive day for this amature boat owner.
Excellent recovery guys but I agree with other comments, he should have deployed a bow anchor
Bow anchor not going to help when you have a dinky anchor and only 15 feet of rode.
What measures would I have taken? I'd have an anchor rope longer than 10 feet for starts.
Yeah this guys 10 pound West Marine anchor and 15 feet of rode is not much help.
This is hilarious
👍👍
Please can someone tell me if these Skiboats have intercoolers on the inboard engine. Intercoolers allow for fresh water cooling of the engine.
Don’t think so, those things are made for calm fresh water.
Intercoolers are used to cool intake air on a turbo engine. Your thinking of a heat exchanger using sea water to cool antifreeze that circulates thru the engine block. Yes, many inboard boats this size have these as an option.
Yes. Either name. I see many inboard engines die a catastrophic death with salt water cooling including the bigger diesels. When that happens the credit card takes a knock or the boat is sold.
@@xnewguyx2738the inboard engine boats will need to run on inland waters that is distilled because there are so many soluble solids that are almost as bad as sea water
1. That is not a ski boat. 2. Intercooler? Do you mean keel cooler or heat exchanger? Some do have heat exchangers. Fresh water no. This boat was sold as a salt water boat back in the day. Probably a 100 +/- HP naturally aspirated small block V8 gasoline engine on a chevy block.
Motley crew
Good thing he didn't get pushed out further out to sea or hit another boat or rocks causing more damage
Captain? Ye. Right
Interesting legal dimema. The skipper abandoned the boat and the salvage company retrieved it. That makes them the owner now.
Incompetence at it's best. These people shouldn't even be let near a boat.
thrown anchor off bow
The only certain way to prevent that is to not leave the dock.
The captain could start with a complete bodywax
Why are they anchoring right out of the inlet 😂
At 4:25 the captain finds out how much the tow is gonna cost. Watch his reaction.
Don't anchor from the stern or your chances of swamping and sinking from oncoming waves goes way up. Should have had one of the druggies jump in and hand-set that anchor and move the attchment point to the bow.
Talk about over-staffed! How many boats do you need to attend one beached pleasure-craft!
In 'Murica a lot...the idiots have no idea what they're doing so you have to cover for all eventualities.
anchor rope too short and he should have it on the bow.
Exactly he probably had the wrong size anchor for that size of boat. Also, even if he had both of the right equipment 150 foot rope with a big anchor he still would not have known how to use it as you can tell when the boat beached he had to outdrive all the way down in a full position, didn’t even raise it.
Immediately upon losing power and then I was not going to immediately restart then I would have put the anchor out off the bowel cleat
Thats what someone with training would do but not this tub handler
Tied to bowels? Yikes!!!
People need to learn how to properly use anchors
Exactly the way he had the one anchor line dangling off the back of the boat. It looked as if it only had 35 foot of rope for ocean anchor? He did not even raise his outdrive when the boat got beached. It looked like it was all the way down Position.
every boat should have two means of propulsion. having a fail safe is important.
Needed a much longer stern anchor line...surf was too heavy for that short a line.
Bow anchor into the surf
@@alexcawthorne811 You can anchor from any point on your boat just fine if you have the proper size anchor and pay out enough rode. This guy had neither.
@@TOMVUTHEPIMP in these conditions that's very unwise...bow anchor into the surf always.
@@alexcawthorne811 The rode does not know what cleat its tied to.
The physical structure of a boat and resistance in water / windshear conditions days otherwise@@TOMVUTHEPIMP
if you are on a beach already, just take trailer)
Never anchor from the stern in this situation! He should have had way more anchor line as well and both should have had their life jackets on as well.
How much $$$ is this ??
The cost is more than vessel value! Salvage job. The company is actually up to percentage value vessel at the time of salvage.
Tying the anchor to the stern was absolutely stupid, just gave a nice flat surface for the waves to pound against and push him to shore. His first action that close to the beach should have been to drop a Bow anchor, or two to keep him floating and out of the surf.
Would have worked fine if he had the proper size anchor and rode.
Awesome how no one offers to help for free and tow him out.
That’s gonna cost an arm and a leg
Dude throw out the hook
I thought the guy in the green might of been his long lost brother.
Life jackets ? That could have went bad
Drop anchor off front first thing ALWAYS
So what did it cost?
Just a tow is like $1000. Id say this beach salvage is $2000+.
Would of dropped anchor of bow right when engine failed
As the captain, i would've.. sailed somewhere else.
Get the boat service once a year.
well at least he missed the rocks...
Ugh! Step 1: immediately throw out anchor when engine dies. Step 2: Put at least 7 scope of anchor line out. He did not have nearly enough anchor line out to let the anchor hold properly. Step 3: tie the anchor to the bow of the boat so the boat is facing into the wind/current. Many mistakes unfortunately. Completely preventable.
the three stooges need their own show........
That looks expensive. Gonna have to sell the boat.
Do you Yanks have to have a boat licence to Skipper a vessel?
In most states yes...but to qualify for one apparently they only need to string 5 words together. American boating is a source for ridicule by the world's mariners.....to think they managed to find enough people qualified enough to form a navy is quite incredible.
anchor off bow , have life jackets on ,have a credit card with no limit cause salvage is gonna b a fortune
Have a buddy with a boat and brains enough to not beach himself saving you and avoid the bill
At least they're not in the middle of nowhere.
have enough anchor line which is way more than most understand.................AND anchor from the front of the boat LOL WTF? MIke Davison Outdoors on u tube. We really risk our lives in the pacific northwest fishing on the Pacific ocean for Halibut, ling cod, salmon etc. No room for errors in our boats.
He should have dropped anchor and called SeaTow
It's pretty clear that single engine boats intended for the lake really have no business in the Ocean.
