David Crosby passed away today at the ripe age of 81. Respect to this absolute rock legend. Amongst all the hits you wrote in your amazing career, with the Byrds, solo and CSNY, I chose this "Almost Cut My Hair" to remember you. It is my favorite song because of your touching vocals, your powerful message and your beautiful soul. Rest in peace.

This song was the first thing that came to mind after hearing earlier today of his passing. I met him several times, as I worked in the music industry. He was always gracious and kind. This "unedited" version of "Almost Cut My Hair" is among my favorite performances by him. His voice and the guitar playing between Stephen Stills and Neil Young is just amazing. Such energy to compliment David's inspired vocal! May he rest in Peace. Dig, DmGrk

My long hair was cut by the US Goverment in 1984 at Great Mistakes Naval Station boot camp. I vowed to myself that moment that when I was able, I would grow it back and never cut it again. Now after a 33 year career (20 in a corporate setting) where I felt I needed to comply with the going norms, I've retired and immediately started to grow my hair. It's now pony-tail length and I'm never cutting it again. I always think about this song when I think about my long hair, back then and now.... letting my "Freak Flag Fly"!! What a f'n fantastic tune!

I'm sitting here crying and wondering why I'm crying for David when I didn't for Bowie or Prince or so many others. I think it's because David's continued existence (in the face of all his troubles) was a symbol of defiance to me…and thus a symbol of hope.
"I feel like I owe it to someone"…no, David, WE owe it to you. Not merely our gratitude, but to "not give in an inch to fear", in the face of a world that wants us huddled, frightened and conforming in every way.
Not one fucking INCH. Rest in Power, David.

Hemi * one of the lines is very much like that ( looking back to the years of my youth ). To me it just naturally takes me back but the seemingly Flawless singing and playing of Jethro and his little brother Ian who just stuck around for the many steins of beer . The upside of this story related 2 the music. In a fit of jealousy of his younger and more talented brother Jethro(who also had drank many steins himself) attacked Him with his flute stabbing him only 2" from his heart through his lung. After forcing Jethro to sign over his estate he kills his older brother. The doctors tried an experiential treatment with medication. This forced him to have the flute which was left in his lung for two weeks. While the response of the medication worked he learned how to play the flute by breathing in to it by his lung. The only problem was he had to change his name for anonymity and evasion of prosecution. He assumed his brothers identity & then as a reminder to himself of what an amazingly clever of a fellow he is he named the band Jethro.

I've been listening to these guys for 40 years, & I never get tired of this great music. Crosby, Steals, the Hash, from Young. Even now thier music makes such a bold statement. "When I finally get myself togehter, I'm gonna get down to that sunny southern weather" That's where I'm headin' soon. It's ALL STILL GOOD. Dave "Who's still kickin'"

    Best song on Deja Vu.
Best CSNY song with Neil and Stills playing off each other, twin leads.
Crosby' s vocal tone was unreal.
    Pentatonic perfection.

Crosby Stills and Nash had this great attitude to them. When I listen to them I feel a great deal of inspiration, good thoughts actually flood into my head. To me they they are a symbol of strength. When I listen to them they inspire me to have no fear, to be strong, and most importantly.. to smile and enjoy the music.

when you consider the powerful vocal, the symbolism of resistance against a system that does very bad things, this IMO has to be considered one of the most important songs of the rock era or any other for that matter.

How times change, this is real music.
This is the real deal, people who believed that we could change the world thru peace, love, understanding, and tolerance!
We have lost something precious along the way.
Every thing is on machines as far as music.
We have lost our creativity as humans who appreciate the sound of pleasure. May God saves us from the machines and inspire. Beings to make that beats in their hearts!

I'm a son of a bald man, with a bald brother and bald uncles... The bald men's familly... At 16 years old I knew I would be bald... I strated to let my hair grow until my nipples. Long hair for 4 years and baldness arrived...
Today I'm 38 years old, I'm bald and I still need this song at regular time. The sound of a life. My nieces are 14 and 12 years old, I made them listening to Dejà Vu... She told me "you look older because you are bald, but you are really cool with such music" :-)

This should have been the version on the Deja Vu album! This one romps! It should have been a double album too, with this song and Carry On extended to 15 minutes. They held back some of their best material for their solo projects that were coming up. It could have been one of the best albums ever. Oh well, still a great album.

Hi, roughneckghost ... such a long name ... anyway, I have been collecting albums for decades and it is very diverse. I do not really care for a lot of what is called music (for the masses) for the most part. There are exceptions. The harmonics that Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young had going on was extraordinary and was an inner experience besides the listening and normal enjoyment. Damn, I do miss the sixties like crazy ... they were some incredible times, I must say. I also feel that the 30s and 40s might have been an interesting time to be young in. Being young anytime is a good thing ... too bad that when we are young, we have no clue that it goes so fast ... after all, no one can tell kids anything. We, people, pretty much learn the hard way; through experience ... the good and the not so good. Hope all is well with you. Take care.

Minahh you're a wise woman ) .... my name derives from my old clan Roughnecks ... i was Ghost .. im still Ghost ... and i think we are all Ghosts ... metaphorical speaking ... in 200 years from now , 3 generations further, nobody will ever know from us .. all the people that ever spoke to us , saw us, interact with us will be gone , the only proof that we ever existed will be the blood in our grand grand children ... and im not planning to make any in this sick cruel world ))
