My direct boss warned me that my overall boss wants to bring me into sales. (I'm in research and data and I've been with the company for 4 years) I DO NOT want to ever be in sales and I'm worried denying the opportunity will appear ungrateful or disappoint my bosses. Hi Samantha. Thank you for your question. First of all, congratulations that your overall boss sees something in you that you maybe don't see in yourself! I agree, you'll want to approach this thoughtfully. The first thing I recommend is to have a meeting where you can hear why they believe you're a good fit. During this meeting you will also ask several questions - this time is not about you accepting or declining an offer, it's about discovery. Once you've had that discussion, then you can carefully craft your response, which may sound like, "Thank you for the opportunity. I'm excited about x, but I have concerns about y. At this time this opportunity doesn't align to my vision and goals at our company because of z." I hope this helps!

What about a promotion I do want but the interview process and communication was deceitful and misleading? Essentially a bait and switch. How could I reject that?
You politely decline. If your first impression is that of unprofessionalism and deceit, those are red flags that it’s truly not an opportunity you want.
