      @@JenniferBrick that would make a great video 😉 I attended a “women in IT” workshop where the panelists said something similar. Women did more than they had to to prove to the men they were worthy but it never worked. It’s so fascinating when we explore how we compensate for something we should deserve.

    Fastest way to get promoted at work is be buddy-buddy with leadership. The harder you work you will be be seen as a “good worker” thats it. Whereas been buddy-buddy will open doors at work. These people don’t care about you. So why should care about them. You’re just a number.

      I've personally found being strategic about asking for help and passing on information tends to help. Bosses tend to hate when employees are constantly asking questions only slightly more than ones that are never asking any. I make a point of mentioning things when there's something new going on that I'm handling in case there's something the boss knows that I don't about what's going on. Communication at my work is so bad with multiple layers of corporate, that more often than should be the case, I know more about what's going on in my department than the boss does.
      You do need to show some initiative and potential though, otherwise, you can get pigeonholed into a lower level job than what you want/can do.

      Learned this the hard way. 100% yes. I couldn’t believe how people that sucked at their job were viewed highly and given so many free passes. I realized I was working for a bunch of idiots 🫠 Definitely the wrong place for me!

    *PRO TIP #1:* Focus on what people see and the important jobs only. Let somebody else handle the menial tasks.
    *PRO TIP #2:* Cover your boss's weaknesses. The better you make him look the more likely he/she is to promote you.

      I got a promotion at work and I went from hourly to salary and they used the cr*p out of me. Long hours; no overtime pay. Stepped down after one year of that B.S. Made more money per hour before the damn promotion.

      @@JenniferBrick Yep, I turned down the same promotion multiple times before I almost got stuck taking it. I'm glad that I don't have it because I get all the upsides of the position, but the actual manager in charge is the one that gets yelled at if things aren't going right. Personally, I don't much care about that, if the manager is upset, she can do her own dagblasted job and leave me out of it.

    I don't even want to get promoted. I just do the bare minimum, wait it out for 2-3 years, get a new job, gain a huge pay bump that I would've never gotten by just getting promoted. Rinse and repeat.

    i started doing this at work 3 years ago and it got me like 6 promotions. i didnt get lazy, but i did focus entirely on the important stuff and made sure it was done correctly and basically just ignored all the unimportant stuff. making sure your name is associated with the important things that get done correctly, and NOT the minutia that gets done incorrectly is the most important career hack ive ever done.

    From what I notice, people that are good at their jobs and not getting rewarded end up changing jobs. Management only cares when someone is actually quitting and tries to counteroffer to keep them. I've never seen anyone accept a counteroffer as they always end up leaving anyways.

      Currently, in this position. I have been dubbed a “Rock Star” but they refuse to promote me or let me transfer out my toxic department. My so-called reward is more work that should be completed by others. The level of disrespect is off the charts. Super motivated to leave. I have faith it’s soon. 😊🎉

      Yep, I worked for a family owned business. Saw a 25 yo leave after three years. Easily could’ve been outside sales/business development. I worked less time and same story, yet they just hired some family friend to try to fulfill the 25 yo last role.

      Yep. In this situation myself. They keep dumping more work on me, expect me to fix other peoples mistakes/laziness. Planning on putting in my two weeks notice soon and I know they're going to do the whole "What can we change to keep you" or "We'll give you a raise if you stay". It's such an insult because it's like they're not willing to do anything until you're almost already out the door.

      I am in this situation. I am a hard productive worker and I have worked for a state job for almost 9 years. I have a really good attendance record and hardly use my vacation and sick hours. I have applied for a higher job position about 5 times within the agency. I just applied for 2 more positions within the agency and if I don’t get selected I am searching for another job.
      I also wonder sometimes if it’s discrimination because I am mostly Native American. I have not seen a Native American looking or Asian looking person promoted within the state agency.

    I saw a post on LinkedIn saying that not using an employee's talents is one of the greatest wastes in lean management. Lost talent leads to disengagement. I disagreed. 'Abusing' an employee's talents is the greatest waste. It leads to burnout, resentment, and high turnover.

    I did my job so well that people never wanted me to leave it much less get promoted out of it. What did I do? I saved up my F You money and quit! No more making others rich at the expense of my own health and well-being.

    Yessss I call this “strategic laziness”! I have a very good friend who works SO hard but consistently ends up as the unappreciated workhorse. And yes she makes good salary, but she has so much stress and takes on tasks that really should be delegated (also she doesn’t enforce her boundaries). We’ve talked about this and she knows but it’s so hard to break that overachieving mindset. And it’s sad because I admire her, she’s a real rockstar

    I basically automated my job without telling anybody, and started barely working. I quit performing tasks I know will be forgotten in a week, and only things on my boss' radar just well enough to pass muster. I did this all with a smile on my face and a friendly attitude. I got a 10% promotion and a 6% raise coupled with a 3% bonus increase all in the same year. It's a real shame this is how America rewards itself now. It's definitely not 1967 anymore.

    Laziness really isn't a bad thing. If you can show you're efficient with important key tasks that matter to the company the most, then doing absolutely everything on your todo list will become less of a problem and you will be promoted. Its about doing what your bosses really want. Now, what matters is if your bosses are reasonable or good bosses. When you are aligned with your bosses priorities, and providing that your boss isn't a clown, you WILL be promoted.

    This is straight facts and golden information. Thank you so much! I have been a hard worker all my life and all the hard workers that I know, only get more work, not promotions. I have gotten promotions but it was because people loved my personality and needed me in those roles (basically it was easier to transition me in them vs hire and train a new person) and they knew I would get the job done. I so appreciate this video because I am dealing with a lazy coworker who is a brown noser and tries to take credit for the work my hard coworker and I do. Now I know I need to be strategic and not angry and resentful. Thank you so much.

    I agree with Jennifer. Doing productive work in the basement that is invisible to top management is unlikely to going get you promoted or a pay raise, unless you get your immediate supervisor to press for it. They will come back to say they don't have a big enough budget for it but they will sure do if you left the company and have to hire 2 people to replace you.

    Agree be lazy on what’s not even your kpi and be outstanding on those that gets you forward.
    Steer your path away from time wasters and those that just use you to get themselves ahead.
    Focus on connections that support your promotion and build that pool.

      It's worth realizing that in most jobs there's a significant amount of busy work in order to justify having more subordinates for the boss and more people there all week. Any of those tasks can be done slower or at a lower level of quality and you'll probably be fine, as long as those important tasks and the ones that contribute to those KPI are done well.
      Personally, I've found that as long as I get the important stuff done to the level that the boss likes and I've got time left to help out in other departments when needed, the boss doesn't notice or care if I'm doing those other tasks more slowly than I potentially could. She cares more about me not quitting due to burn out than the marginal amount of extra work I could do. Especially since, I'm already outperforming everybody else in the department by not doing stupid time wasting BS.

    The problem with doing whats important to the boss is that it's a moving target. My boss will pull me off stuff that I say is important. He says he understands but something else is more important. I do what he wants. Then he gets upset when what I was working on first didn't get done.

      Do not get into a position where you are basically a task-boy or errand-boy for a micro-manager or middle manager. Unlike the movies, unless they're related to you or they owe you a blackmail favor from outside of work, you are doing nothing for your personal / skill growth.

    Sometimes the problem is internal; a thing called bad management. Managers who rule by fear and view productive, independent workers as being a threat to their position. Meanwhile the slacker (or brown noser) is perceived as being non-threatening. Hence, they're good at flattery and stroking their bosses ego.

      I have one that is on vacation at least 3 times a quarter, incompetent, lazzy, arrogant, friendly, and butt kisser. He brings back the best gifts from his trips for everyone, buys gourmet macaroons, and pastries, a least once a month for the office, and just got promoted to director position for 120k a year. Office politics is disgraceful.

    This is just hurts it hits so close to home. My career has become a tragic comedy and I need to escape. I kind of used to be somewhere between slacker Chad and the hard worker. I was on my way. Now after some mergers and being placed in a group under some of the worst leadership I am stuck. I literally worked on and managed the highest profile project for our team and no one even knows outside our little group. I could go on but the point is your advice is so right and spot on. Thank you for sharing.

    Do not, I repeat do not, take a lateral job without a discussion about future preparedness for promotional opportunities in that job. Think about what it takes to learn a new job and all of the extra stress, training and frustration that comes with a new job. You should be compensated for that.

      well most people take the lateral job for higher pay as per market rates, better working condition and improved work life balance. not a promotion.

      @@asadb1990 Maybe, but not always. Some people also get asked to go to a new team in a similar role because they are good at what they do. If a new department is being created and they need employees to fill positions they will recruit people internally to take a lateral. If you make that move and want to move up, make sure they are aware that your intention is to move up into positions of greater responsibility. If you don’t set that expectation from the beginning, they will give those higher responsibility roles to those employees that did make those expectations clear.

      @@Chris-tg3qy you are assuming the employer is clear as the employee. most employer scare the employee into taking a lateral position by telling them the current position is being downsized and you only have the option to take the position in front of you right. most companies make decisions months in advance and give less than a day to make a decision.

      @@asadb1990 I am not referring to a downsizing situation. That is different. I am referring to a situation where the employee is being approached about a lateral position and they have a choice to stay where they are or move into a new role. I wouldn’t move into the new role without having a discussion about my career path and upward mobility opportunities. I have been in this situation a few times and I also have friends that have been in that situation. If you accept the lateral with the intention of career growth and advancement, it is very important to communicate that in the beginning. That way, when opportunities arise they already know you have an interest. My point is when you accept a lateral position, but have an interest in upward mobility make sure you communicate that. Sometimes managers will recruit hard workers because they need someone reliable to do all of the administrative work and that is their only plan for that employee. Make sure you are not that employee. Make sure they know you have expectations too.

    Happened to My sister, she worked as a office manager for a doctor, the nurse in the office spent most of her days kissing up to the doctor and his bosses while my sister stayed diligent to her position, my sister ended up leaving while the nurse got promoted

    You always help remind me of my Chad story that I don't think I've shared with you yet :) On your point of developing meaningful connections, I can tell it's something I still fight within myself. I've told myself for so long that I'm not deserving of true connection, and when I stray into the unknown territory I can hear my old self wanting to cling on.

    I am a detail oriented employee and cover aspects of my job that people do not think of. While it’s important, I recently realized that if I left the company could reap the rewards of my labors for at least a year before realizing the catch up work they would have to do on tasks that I regularly stay on top of. What kind of skills could I hone in on to help my work be noticed? At the moment I am basically the person who does the menial tasks.

      well work relationships are mostly fake. overcoming the guilt of doing all the work? find another job and give the least amount of notice. depending on your company you might not want to give any notice.

    Great advice. I am graduating next week with two masters degrees but I am much older than the other students - over 55. I was wondering if you would speak to how us older workers and graduates can get hired despite age (and let's be frank, some loss of looks)?

      congrats! What I gleaned from various sources. Show you are energetic, competent, and have the solutions they need. Let prospective employers know you are tech savvy, and flexible about learning new things. If you are passionate, confident, and KNOW your stuff, age can be just a number. Target the smaller to mid size companies, cuz they need more rounded folks that can help them grow.

      Honestly, #1 do not panic, panic leads to the dark side yes. #2 look at what the company needs they will always have some variability in your area use that. #3 notes, research a battle is already won before it is fought. The more information the better.

Flexibility, with work environments, location and even job possibilities, if it's in the ball park of what your skill sets are then you it just works lol. Take for example a database administrator should know enough to do a database developers job to a certain extent. Look at skill based openings rather than titles, while job titles can give you an idea of what is there if you have the skills you have the skills.

    Working in retail or a big corporation the reason why the lazy people get promoted is that they think if they promote them they will get off butt and start working . That doesn’t always work I’ve seen it. It makes them the lazier with a big head.

    The hardest workers can't be promoted. If you promote them, who the hell will be left to do the actual work? That is how many managers look at it.
    I dealt with that long enough to leave and start a couple businesses of my own. Sold both for a large amount of money and now I just work when I want to and on my terms.
    Another content creator on here did a video about why you should just find another position elsewhere rather than ask for a promotion or pay raise. Time wasted while they delay and push off your wants as long as they can and lost income for the money you didn't make while waiting.

    As someone who has zero shame about prioritizing what matters to my higher ups, i only hope that to those out there workout their ass off on EVERYTHING take this advice to heart. I recently started in an insurance company and i took and detailed notes on what my supervisors value. You'd think that because we are so in social services everything would be valued since by the time people get to us things are already pretty bad. But no. My supervisors value getting the assessment of the situation in above all else and since an assessment can be done in one phone call, they overload us with referrals. So what is that saying? It's saying do your assessment and move on to the next. So guess what? That's exactly what I do.

    I’d like to get your opinion on senior leaders who cannot see through the lazy people. Any good executive should be seeing through this and realise who is doing the work. Allowing people to get away with this is a reflection not so much on the lazy person getting away with this but rather the inept senior leader who allows it to occur. I know that I’d only want the best committed people working for me vs. the lazy people doing nothing. Protecting this behaviour will only affect the boss in the long run when results are not being delivered.

    This may or may not work. My husband's direct supervisor is one of those "lazy employees." Lazy-Bill got promoted to department head of which my husband part of and my husband is in charge of his own team and their production. The thing is, my husband has a history with the owners of the company as he worked for them previously and took a new position to expand his career back in 2014.
    Since my husband is friends with the owners, when they really needed more help they offered him a sweet deal to come back to work for them. He accepted. His supervisor (Lazy Bill), was new to the company and had been there less than a year when my husband was re-hired.
    Here's the thing: My husband is someone who gets the job done. If he doesn't have the tools he needs, he figures it out. (He ran his own company for years. One must learn problem solving skills to stay in business for any amount of time). Lazy Bill, however, wasn't doing his job, and my husband is pointing this out to the company owners regularly. One of the owners even asked my husband to "Lead by pushing from behind" when dealing with Lazy Bill.
    As of this writing, Lazy Bill is still in his position, but my husband is actively trying to get him fired by pointing out how Lazy Bill isn't doing his job. I honestly believe that Lazy Bill isn't lazy per-se, just unqualified for his position, so he isn't able to get his work done properly. Lazy Bill is really just a victim of the Peter Principle, in this case.
    My point is: Just being lazy won't get you promoted. Being lazy and a suck up, will. Make sure you are licking the correct set of boots if you are going to try this tactic. Hint: those boots you should be licking aren't necessarily those of your supervisor. Look for the supervisor's protege to suck up towards. That person has your career in their hands.

    I agree that you need to focus on the things that are important to the organization. However, not doing your best when you have even little things to do will get noticed. If you work for an ungrateful person or people find a new job where people appreciate you and your effort. I have managed people for a long time and I see the little things.

      Most of those things are little for a reason. If you can't identify how they related to actual priorities, you can probably slack off on them and nobody is going to notice.
      They keep trying to promote me at work and I keep saying no, but I think I'm about to get a promotion I can't refuse. You'll know if small tasks are important and to the best with those, but most of them are simply just busywork that can get done or not and nobody really cares. As long as you've got a reason for not doing it, bosses probably won't ask for things to be reprioritized to do those things.

    The work social committee is overlooked but shouldn't be! I actually met a wild range of people from work, that I would not have otherwise, by getting in on the social committee. Just be sure to use it for networking, and not just do the busy work part.

    It worked! Thanks for the advice. I am so good at being lazy, especially at work. My boss really appreciates my laziness, and always praises me for it at our monthly staff meetings. The other staff tries to mimic me, but it is not really so easy to be so good at being lazy, I have likely saved the company I work for hundreds if not thousands in dollars by not making mistakes in the job I am doing so lazily. In fact, I do very little work on the job and this has not been easy to always do. My boss should continue to be grateful. I should be promoted soon.

    Want a promotion? Be a surreal liar, throw everyone under the bus, and rat everyone out. Basically, be a POS. Working hard only pisses you off and makes you want to quit. When you threaten to quit they’ll kiss your ass then go back to the same ways. They just need people to do all the work while others laugh, kiss ass, and sit on their ass.
    This is why I’m happy to be a union electrician. You know you’ll be laid off anyways when you’re no longer needed so why try? Be on the clock, get something done, go home, repeat.

    One note on point #1: sometimes, the work that is high priority / visibility for leadership... might be really mundane. I instinctively put that kind of work on the back burner as it doesn't directly channel to my growth (and won't get me promoted for sure) - but doing an *adequate* job and keeping to SLAs is paramount to not letting it be a blemish on your record.

    Lazy people at work don't deserve to get promoted because the company was paying them and that is why Lazy workers need to work hard for the company so that company will recieved income to pay for their expenses they've used such as expense claims, supplier invoices, company building monthly rental, to cover this thing. Also, employers are aware if their company is earning annually or having deficit. So, lazy employees, should understand why they're hired and not just receiving salary without doing anything. Or going around making chitchat with coworker. Thats why some company are expecting employees to work hard too not just complacent at work. Company wants a productive employee and not a Lazy employee. Shout out to a hardworking employee and yet not appreciated because there are employers or lazy employee are friends so it's not a surprised why this Lazy employee get promoted and that is a fact. Whereas, hardworking, still hardworking because they're not close to their boss but soon this hardworking employees will recognized for their hardworking and be recognized not to be demoralized and commitment to their company. ❤🎉

    Working hard helped me see the way things worked, instead of the way things should have worked sooner.
    Working hard is still useful, but it needs direction and purpose.
    Let's say, long ago, there was a chance at promo. People that couldn't get it just sat back and did the minimum. I was one the two that had a chance. I tried to help every one (made worse by the people holding back) while my competitor only focused on helping the higher ups. Needlessly to say I lost, but it was a good lesson.

    I’m learning this. Don’t be in the top performers. Stay somewhere in the middle, walk around and talk to people three times a day. Go talk to your managers and directors at least twice a day while asking them if you can help them with anything like run reports and and don’t forget to kiss plenty of ass

    After 24 years of experience, I have to say that this is not a general rule by all means, so be carefull if you take this as an advise. Managers I have worked for are pretty much aware of who do the job based on company priorities, which are flown down and adapted to a lower level in the organization. Managers, who evaluate contributors performance and give promotions,at least in the industry I worked for, understand that the one that produce more (works harder) is expanding the skills to do more during the time is given to do it, are more prompted to promotions than the ones that are less productive. It's hard to see somebody that work less and that might be producing a higher impact. In the industry I work for more than 2 decades, the one that produce more, works harder, is creating a higher impact, the metrics are there to validate that. The reason behind this is that they understand that if you promote the one that do less, the one that do more will leave the company, because he will feel offended, I would leave in no time, and in the end you will have a promoted employee that is not productive with the one that is high performer already gone, so you end up with nothing,this is a promoted low performer without the one that is high performer. The ones the perform better, can be better leaders, because they know what does it take to do the job efficiently and at high performance and standards, so this person can mentor and tell employees what has to be done, how, how long to do it and what kind of quality. A manager that does not know the details of the job done at lower level is risking of being bull shitted by lower level contributors. I have seen this several times with managers that don't have te expertise, but they call themselves good leaders, good communicators, capable of taking the best of their teams to get high performance teams, but in reality they don't know details of the jobs under them so they are not capable of understanding the timing, schedule, etc. The companies that just use hard working employees, keeping them down there doing more work, have low moral and integrity standards and will have low levels of good performers retention. So once again, what is presented here is not something to be taken too seriously.
