    Why do we pull off of the ball? Well that's exactly what we tackle in this video. Not only do we show you how to fix pulling off the ball, we explain why it happens and give you two awesome drills to get you staying on the ball longer and hitting it harder!
    The most common reason for pulling off the ball is improper swing initiation. Meaning, which part of the body fires first after the load and stride are completed? More often than not, the hitters pulling off of the ball are starting to quickly with their hips or shoulders. This makes the body out-race the hands and the hands get dragged behind effectively pulling off of the ball.
    To begin to fix this problem we do 2 simple drills:
    The first drill we take dry and tee swings from our knees without rotating the upper body at all.
    The second drill we stand and take swings off of a tee without moving our body at all and the we progress into a swing where we let the lower body rotate, while keeping the upper body stable.
    These drills begin to give you the feeling you need to sync up your swing versus having the body pull off and drag the hands behind.
    Keep working hard!!
    I look forward to helping you improve your baseball in the future!

    In this video you suggest that the hands should initiate a normal swing. Yet , in the power series videos, you suggest that the hips should initiate the swing; sort of creating hip separation. So , what should start the normal swing (game like): The hands first then the hips, the hips first then the hands or both the hands and the hips at the same time? I am a bit confused. Thank You

      +Sergio Molina Stay sequential: feet (Stance-Stride), knees(Stride), hips, core, chest/back, shoulders, arms, hands, bat. Granted, the hands will turn its the shoulders, but it is a product, not an active movement. If you are out of sequence many incorrect things can occur and the end result is loss of power and direction in the path of your barrel. Start with your hands and cast and you swing around the ball pulling an outside pitch which usually results in a ground ball to the left side. In relation to the hips and hands you commented on, you want to create separation between your upper and lower body in order to create torque which is the force that 'yanks' your hands through the zone...obviously in sequence. Good luck.

    so im 14 and over the last 3 or so years, my batting average has steadily declined. i just started a new season and started 1-10 with 6 strikeouts. three years ago a season with 6 strikeouts was terrible. i feel the flaws consist of my
    -ability to choose a good pitch
    -bat control
    -being able to keep my head looking at the ball the whole way through
    -im 5' 10" which is kinda tall so my coaches tell me to take a wider stance and bend my knees. i already have a long stride but i always stride towards first base (im a righty)
    -i spend time practicing and finding ways to become more skilled, like your videos, but i have no confidence in a game situation
    i need your help with this because next year, if i cant hit, i wont make my freshman squad

      Ariel Reyes Hey Ariel, thanks for the requests! These are great subjects, there are many hitting flaws that cause fly balls and I actually have some videos in the making on this very subject. (I'll put them at the top of my list!!). In the meantime you can check out the new video: ua-cam.com/video/RfiSbsGITd8/v-deo.html&lc=z12dzxczwxuxej4em23szvcyrrjuyh2jr04 While this video isn't specifically about fly balls, the drill in the lesson fixes a very common flaw that results in a lot of pop ups. yesterday, I was playing baseball and I did terrible batting. I was nervous the field was full of people. I bated three times and I could not hit the ball well. I was popping up the ball . I did not have a good contact. I believe that I was picking a bad pitch to hit. I was not able to find what pitch was in the zone. I tried to do a few drills that you have in your UA-cam channel, but I did not have any success. I do not want to hit a home run , I just want to have a solid contact and hit everytime on the sweet spot of my bat.

      Ariel Reyes Hey Ariel, sorry to hear you are struggling, we've all been there. Sounds like getting back to the basics will be your best bet. I'm actually working on a series of videos that break the swing down to its simplest components (basics). As of right now it sounds like repetition will be your best friend, you could have the best swing in the world but without the repetitions off of the tee, batting practice, and at-bats in the game, you will still find it hard to perform well. This is true especially when learning new moves. Keep working at it and I'll do my best to put out instruction that will help you along the way!! If your hands out race the body, aren't you losing power based on bio-mechanics and a sequential swing? If you initiate your swing with your hands, doesn't that lead to casting? Isn't casting swinging around, or to the outside of the baseball-which is not good? If my shoulders stay closed throughout the swing, as you are suggesting in this video, wouldn't that inhibit a full swing and not utilize my entire body? Especially on a middle/middle inside/inside pitch? I understand the use of a, or in this case the drill, but you seem to be prematurely rolling the wrists through the ball/swing.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 років тому +1

      +The Baseball Barn Hey Baseball Barn, thanks for the question!
      Yes, if the hands literally outrace the body, we will not be as efficient with speed/power. The purpose of this video is to address the large percentage of hitters that fire the body much too quickly and outrace their hands.
      The drills and feelings addressed in this video are to over exaggerate the feeling of pulling off of the ball with the body, with the exact opposite feeling of swinging without moving the body at all. This will be a beginning step in helping hitters sync up their swings.
      To answer you second question: The swing isn't literally initiated with the hands, the video, again, is a swing thought for hitters who struggle with pulling off of the ball with the body.
      Even if the swing were initiated by the hands, this also wouldn't necessarily mean automatic casting/hitting around the ball. I have a great video on casting coming out soon that will explain this in more detail, yet casting is simply more of an early release of bat lag than it is a body movement. A hitter can hit a ball with straight arms, and still strike a ball dynamically to all fields. (Not with much efficiency, but it can be done)
      And yes, if your shoulders were to stay closed throughout the swing it would inhibit the use of the body. Again, the drills in this video are designed to FEEL the opposite of pulling off of the ball.
      When a hitter makes full speed swings with the same feeling from the drills, they will be more synced up and the shoulders will open at a more desirable point during the swing. (Unless of course the hitter is being extremely literal and stops rotation)
      Therefore, there was never any suggestion of not rotation the torso/shoulders in the swing, but an avenue in which to rotate them in the proper sequencing.
      And for the drills, the wrist will roll over after the strike of the baseball in order to keep the shoulders square for the drill.
      Hope this answers your questions! If you have any other questions or need help with anything else, just let me know!

    I think that teaching hands first is a bad way to address this issue, especially since none of the great OPS hitters lead with their hands. The hands should lag behind the body. A better fix for this issue would be bending at the waist during the stride and staying behind the ball and having side bend during the swing. That creates a swing plane that allows the bat to stay in the hitting zone longer than being upright like you are in this video, and subsequently will eliminate pulling off the ball. I work with a lot of kids and know that hands first is definitely not what you want to teach them because that's how a lot of them are when I start working with them. They end up not using their lower half at all because they get so focused on using their hands and there is nothing to initiate the lower half when the swing starts with the hands, can't get on pitch plane because their body isn't in the correct position, and end up lunging toward the pitcher trying to take the hands to the ball to start the swing.

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  8 років тому +8

      +Brian Ingram Hey Brian, thanks for the comment! You're absolutely right, the hands do not technically go first in a good swing. The explanation and drills in this video are more for feel, for hitters who tend to overdue the sequencing of the swing by having their body spin too fast.
      When a hitter who spins too fast, "thinks" hands first, the hitter will rarely over due the sequencing the other way (where the hands go way too soon) and usually be much closer to being sequenced correctly.
      Therefore, if there was a hitter who's hands outraced the body, it would be a good "feel" drill for them to feel the body go first.
      There's quite a few hitting flaws out there, and it'd be tough to address them all in one video. This video, is for this issue specifically
      Most definitely appreciate the critique! Always completely open minded when discussing things with other instructors, and see it as a way to make myself and my students better!
      Thanks again for the comment! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    • @ProSpeedBaseball
      @ProSpeedBaseball  7 років тому +4

      Hey Colin, thanks for the question. Yes, the sequence of the swing is started generally with the hips. The instruction in this video is to aid players who are out of sync with their swing. Meaning, hitters can overdue the opening of their hips too soon, therefore dragging the upper body through.
      The drill in this video is for players to feel the hands go first to over-exaggerate so they have a better chance of being in sync with their swings.
      So the hands wouldn't actually go first, they would just feel like they are doing so! ~Michael Pro Speed Baseball

    Good video overall but I think hands first is going backwards against what we want young ball players to learn early. For example if you notice at a very young age (t-ball for instance) the common swing you see in kids is an all hands only swing with them usually trying to reach for the hit. I think you would agree that baseball is all legs, hips, and core body before engaging the hands. This goes across for all positions in baseball. Well all except for the bat boy. :) What you seem to be describing is when a batter "turns on the ball" during a swing which is very common and can be a valid swing at times depending on where you are trying to hit the ball to. Just sharing my thoughts and experience from many moons ago but keep up the good work with all your videos!

    I don't agree with these fixes. The hands should never lead the swing and the shoulders should never stay square in a good swing. The hands need to lag to create bat speed and the shoulders need to turn to continue to drive the ball. Players need to learn good posture. Pulling off the ball occurs when a player starts to go upright and pulls his shoulders level and away from the plate during the swing. Players should keep there shoulders in line with the bat and have the front shoulder pointing up and the rear shoulder pointing down. Unfortunately, drills aren't always the fix for this problem as there can often be a lack of core strength which creates the issue. In these cases, hard work in the weight room or a plank routine would be more helpful.

    Yeah, this is a pretty bad tutorial. Just watch a mike trout swing in slow motion. His shoulders move a ton. It's not about keeping the shoulders still, it's about getting them to rotate in a more vertical plane rather than a horizontal plane. The back shoulder has to drop, the front shoulder has to rise. It's kinda impossible to hit with any power if you keep your shoulders still.

    • @cheezewhiz7238
      @cheezewhiz7238 2 роки тому

      The point is to keep them square. Young players trying to add more power have a tendency to pull off the ball with ONE shoulder...their lead shoulder. The more they do it, the more they pull the bat with them EARLY causing mishits and hard pulls. Yes, lead shoulder needs to rise and back shoulder drops...BUT, they are supposed to do them IN SYNC as in "square".

    Why would you make a kid learn something he will have to unlearn later. If he is pulling off the ball it almost always because his timing is off. Every kid you teach this to will fall behind the kids who do it right. You can't hit the ball with power unless you lead with your hips then your shoulders.

    • @weshogg
      @weshogg 6 років тому

      The video is a "Feel" video. Kids learn faster when they can actually incorporate another sense into the learning process. The coach never says that this is the correct swing. It is an exercise to help hitters feel their shoulders at contact and not over rotate, too soon. Just helping them be more aware of their body mechanics.
      Dan, do you have another drill for correcting the issue the coach is trying to address in this video you can share?
