    Granted that Tesla isn't a "traditional automaker", but selling cars is still the biggest source of revenue, is it not? As an owner of FSD beta system for the past four years, you'll excuse me if I'm not convinced by pronouncements that it will be a level 4 or 5 system withing the next eighteen months. On the highway, maybe, but on surface streets - well, I'll believe it when I see it (and will it work on version 3 hardware?). Despite my growing impatience on this front, I really welcome competion from BYD, Hyundai and Kia to help sustain Tesla's focus on it's mission on advancing sustainable transportation.

      FSD is fool's errands to compare who has better FSD. Until we reach level 4 or 5, any FSD systems that still require driver attention and hands on steering wheel is completely useless. Only the early adopters buy them for novelty factor. Not much more useful than rudimentary adaptive cruise controls that are actually more predictable to drivers than finicky FSD.

      It’s a very easy answer when you have their government that preaches to all the sheep to buy local only. It’s not a coincidence either that they are heavily subsidized by their very own government. This is the same that has happened when it comes to their real estate crisis buying so much. It’s just a short term game for them so it’s nothing to worry about.

    BYD's 3Q Automotive Gross Margin of 25.7% was recently announced (removes low-margin contract electronics division). This compared to Tesla's automotive gross margin (excludes regulatory credit sales) at 16.3%. Both consider R&D as operating expenses, not included in gross margin. At this rate, BYD has some room to compete on price.

      @@thedualtransition6070 Tesla still makes a lot of money in US regulatory credit sales, accounting for ~1/4 of their net profit. And they get a lot of tax breaks and credits (such as the $45/kWh battery production tax credit, charging infrastructure credits up to $30k per new or existing charger opened up to other automakers, etc.), which increases their net. And they spend significantly less on R&D, which leads to lower operating expenses. Tesla still makes more net. However, when you compare how much they sell vehicles for compared to what it costs to make them on a percentage basis, BYD has outperformed Tesla all year at an increasing rate.

      BYD also has no service network built up in the United States; without a strong service network and readily available spare parts, nobody will buy a car, unless they can get it for almost nothing.
      So either the margins get smaller because of maintaining a service network or they sell them for well under $10K; either way, you can't sell cars by just rolling them off the dock, and advertising "Look! EVs hot off the boat from China!"

  • @connclissmann6514

    BYD Seal now offered in this market at entry cost of €40,567 for the base model, after government grants (€3,500). Model Y about €8,000 more on the same basis. (€3,000 further discount offered to Model Y customers taking a new car currently in stock / local inventory). Obviously Model 3 even less expensive. BYD distributors have a huge challenge locally explaining who BYD are to buyers, who are not as informed as those watching this informative channel and others similar in their language.

    When you consider the fact that the cybertruck does not have a paint shop and will probably require less robots than any car that is currently making, I believe that yes once the cybertruck is fully ramped up, Tesla will make roughly 7 1/2 times MORE per vehicle versus BYD.
    Sandy Monroe said it himself, the capex per line for the Cybertruck could be four to five times lower than that if Ford's. Basically Tesla will be able to afford to plop a plant down anywhere even in Australia and start manufacturing Cybertrucks EVERYWHERE. I believe within the next year or two model y will hit over a million units per year in sales. Cybertruck I think will hit over 2 million per year.

    Atta boy viking. That's the most comprehensive look at byd ive seen. At times, i feel Tesla is too diversified. Byd grows fast and focused mainly because their efforts are focused on a couple of key products. Byds arrival in North America is welcomed. The battle for market share would inevitably impact ev acceptance positively across the board. Elon needs the pressure as well. Byds fight up the ladder has made them hungry. As we know..the fight to the crown is not as difficult as holding onto that crown. As a long term investor in Tesla, i see no negatives from byds presence. Elon gets a fire lit under him, he will need to be held more accountable as per delivery dates/promises. BYD will see Tesla on the horizon and work harder to catch them, all good. BYD vs Tesla was anticipated, this is all going according to plan.

    Not sure why earlier this year (late spring, early summer) there was some gossip that BYD could fail and not be one of the survivors or a projected shakeup of the Chinese EV industry. Maybe there's a metric missing in this presentation, like leverage. I don't remember that this video mentioned debt loads for each company. There was never any question or speculation about Tesla's survival although perhaps Tesla's global market and sales means it's less exposed to the volatility of the Chinese market and Consumer.

    BYD's rapid growth should be good news for achieving the renewable mission. Who is top dog matter less than the fact just about all other EV players are sinking. From my boots on the ground POV, Chinese buyers of big ticket $, lux 🚗 which Teslas fall under, prefer trendy, fashionable new designs. Witness buyers of MB demand refunds bc they learned their cars had older Gen of CPU. Probably didn't make any difference materially. Status & to show they've made it are key buying factors for the biggest car market.

    • @larryevans6739
      @larryevans6739 7 місяців тому

      Chinese new car buyers are about 2 decades younger on average than in the US. That makes them more open to new technologies and brands. And their preferences can shift rapidly. Consumers are less influenced by what their parents drove because relatively few of their parents owned cars. This helps make sense of why BYD's proliferation of new models and 18 month product development cycles makes sense in China. Tesla's Chinese market share will continue to decline if they can not become more agile with refreshed prduct.

    An interesting announcement from Panasonic who blames lacklustre Tesla demand for cut to profit outlook. FT and Reuters. Wall Street has had difficulties before notably with Enron and Lehman Brothers for example. Their focus regarding Tesla still appears to be on manufactured numbers, not sales demand, irrespective of Tesla’s declining market share. The collective news from the EV manufacturers including Tesla that the rate of growth was slowing was a shot across the bow for them all. Toyota’s “we told you so” remark is becoming somewhat ironic whilst today confirmed it would boost investment by $8 billion and add about 3,000 jobs at its electric-vehicle battery manufacturing plant in North Carolina, accelerating the Japanese automaker's push to electrify its lineup. Meanwhile, whilst other manufacturers are turning down manufacturing numbers, Tesla’s plan to build a factory in Mexico could be delayed past 2025 and Tesla announced an expansion of Gigafactory Nevada to build the Semi vehicle in volume, but that has yet to happen. Clearly they all are reevaluating their build strategies.

Model S/X sales are becoming irrelevant and the Model 3 and Y are the only vehicles that can rely currently (Cybertruck seems a clusterfuck and the Semi is significantly lagging behind the competition). I don't think everyone buys Tesla just for the current car business. They are betting big on Tesla autonomous AI driving. Robotaxis. That's what will set Tesla apart from competition. It'll be selling autonomous driving as a software to other cars as well if it wants to. If it cannot do that, then in cars, tesla will sorely disappoint investors in terms of numbers sold. Also Tesla has battery storage business with great margins which is growing as well and should continue to grow. There is huge demand for energy storage. Also in long term, there is the Optimus robot which made significant improvements in just 9 months. Also Tesla can make and sell heat pumps if they decide to in case their car business is not going so well. Tesla is not just a car company. It has a bunch of startups in it. That's why the PE is so high for it. If any of the above mentioned comes true, Tesla should be able to 2-5x from here.

      @@galanoth17 First, the automomous driving have been advertised as "ready" for a decade, and is nowhere near close to us, specially in hardware configuration lacking thermal vision, radar, lidar or a combination of them. Second, if a brand would be able to achieve successfully level 4 autonomy, do you really think they will sell robotaxis to particulars instead of making their own business as Uber? Makes no sense. Third: Optimus is like a joke compared to what Boston Dynamics had 15 years ago, and Boston earns no money with their inventions despite their cutting edge technology. Robotaxis, automat humanoids and landing on Mars are all the same: distractions to cajole investors. The only important battle which rest to fight is: would be a 25k $ Model 2 be on the market at volume numbers before the Chinese, Korean or Euro brands achieve that milestone? Because if they reach that before, is game over. Tesla is already losing in China vs BYD.

    "Worth" or market cap isn't real money, only a tiny fraction of shareholders can ever sell their shares at the current share price before prices drop.
    Private companies have zero market cap and if Elon could take Tesla private he would.
    End of the day a company's real value is measured in revenue and profit, and BYD and Tesla makes roughly the same revenue with BYD making higher profit, that's all that matters.

    • @galanoth17
      @galanoth17 5 місяців тому

    • @vlhc4642
      @vlhc4642 5 місяців тому

      @@galanoth17 You might want to check more often than once every 2 years, just search "BYD Gross Margin" on Google, first or second link from YCharts. Then do the same for Tesla. As of September 2023 BYD is at 22.3% while Tesla is at 17.89%.
      Now BYD revenue as October was $81B, Tesla revenue around same period was $95B, multiply both by margin gives you their net profit respectively: $18B for BYD and $17B for Tesla.
      You might be confusing margin with profit. Profit is in dollars, margin is in percent. Tesla makes more dollars on each car sold, but they also spend more to build each car and they sell a lot less cars than BYD.
      I mean it shouldn't be that surprising, BYD is actually vertically integrated, they make their own batteries and their own chips, whereas Tesla only assembles batteries from CATL or BYD or Panasonic and they do not make their chips. Every supplier Tesla pays means giving away profit, and when they buy BYD batteries that profit goes to BYD.

Lest remember that those BYD margins are from selling nearly all their cars in China, a place where Tesla makes next to no margins (most of Tesla's profit comes from the much less competitive and much more protected US market). BYDs car margins are ABOVE Tesla's, stop with the disinformation (as with the "unreliability" exaggerated crap, the difference is actually negligible). BYD is already the number 4 car company in the world, way ahead of Tesla, and as BYD exports more its profit per car will increase. BYD already has a full suite of products, and the Tesla Model 2 is vapourware until it arrives as are any sales claims. Tesla is basically reselling other people's batteries in its storage business. Tesla is grosly over valued. It's probably 10x over valued.
    As this recession deepens I think we will see the investment money dry up for Tesla and it's value will plummet.
    Who knows for certain though.
    All we know is Toyota is much bigger, makes many more cars, makes way more profit, yet somehow Tesla is valued higher on the stock market.
    It makes no sense at all.

    22:30 Tesla Gross Margin does not include R&D expenses. R&D is included in operating expenses. Go to Tesla's 3Q report Page 20 "Statement of Operations". After the line item "Gross Profit" comes "OPERATING EXPENSES" section. The first line item under Operating Expenses is "Research and development". BYD beats Tesla in Gross Margin. BYD beats Tesla in Automotive Gross Margin. Both include R&D in Operating Expenses, not Gross Margin.

      @@4literv6 "margin" is a percentage. It makes no difference "per vehicle sold". Tesla does sell about half as many cars total at a higher transaction price. And Tesla gets quantifiably more in government subsidies while spending less on R&D, which drives up their net. But BYD beats Tesla in gross margin. And BYD's electronics division bought a contract manufacturing company for $2.2 Billion in cash and bought factories in Brazil, which impacts cashflow (but that is not a bad thing).

    Tesla has put itself in a bind by only having the Model 3 and Model Y as "main stream" vehicles. People will buy other brands to get a vehicle class they like. I believe the upcoming Volvo EX-30 will be stiff competition to the Model 3. Instead of delaying the Mexico plant (Model 2), Tesla should be accelerating its construction.

    The big problem: BYD needs to prove the quality of its personal vehicles *AND* make the vehicles meet US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and get high ratings from WorldNCAP crash testing. Small wonder why BYD has get to enter the US market for personal vehicles (though BYD is selling battery-cell electric buses in the USA already). The fact Tesla vehicles have been tested by both WorldNCAP and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to get high ratings is why Tesla is worth a lot more than BYD.

    Some have fogotten to put the hand brake on and the EV ends up submerged - the battery goes into thermal runaway and the fire burns UNDER WATER.

    2:36 Automotive gross margins are not in Tesla's favor. BYD has beaten Tesla in automotive gross margin in the first two quarters. In 3Q, Tesla automotive gross margin was 16.3%. BYD overall includes BYD Electronics contract manufacturing in its total. That actually has a seperate stock BYDIF and tends to have a lower gross margin of around 10%. I have not been able to find the detailed report listing automotive gross margin, but if Electronics division is lower, BYD automotive has to be higher than the 22.1% overall gross margin.

    Charts done recently show byd in ev only sales since the end of 2021 hasn't gained any ground on tesla in ev only sales globally. 😀
    Despite offering many more model's across more pricing point's, despite inc denza in the total ev numbers.
    Despite both being founded in 2003, both delivered their first respective model's in 2008. Byd also has home field advantage in China the world's top ev market and yet the seal is a joke vs model 3 in total sales.
    And the sexy just released refreshed m3 highland is gonna send that demand back up here real soon.
    Especially come Jan 1st of 24 when the us ev tax credits switch to a pos redeemable rebate. 😎

    The starting price for the BYD Seal is $12,000 cheaper than a Tesla Model 3 base model. I wonder why Tesla makes more profit despite it having no real-life benefit for the customers. 🤔 Everything that's sold as being better is pretty much negligible.
    It definitely is a bebefit when judging cars and models that I neither own stocks, nor am a fan of a particular brand nor do I have any car at all. To me the future are Robotaxis. No buying, registering, parking, ensuring, maintaining, repairing, disposing stress and no instant spending of at least 20k at once.
    For me cars are just tools. When I don't need them they can go away and service anither customer. I am all for car-prostitution!
