@@ec8335 N’s in general are people who are intuitive and introverted. Introversion is largely biochemical - people who are introverted typically have a very low threshold at which neurons fire, which in turn translates both into a tendency to become easily overstimulated and a tendency to create new neural configurations more quickly.
Recent work in understanding brain structure shows that neural circuits create what amount to fractal patterns of varying degrees of complexity. At the upper end, this can be thought of as being “11-dimensional” though that’s primarily a way of different types of network structures - it is still three dimensional, but it exhibits levels of abstraction that you’d expect to see in something like one of those Mandelbrot screen savers that were so popular a few years back.
These are consistently changing and reconfiguring as we think, at around thirty times a second. If you have a higher sensitivity, it means that you end up creating more complex, higher dimensional structures at a rate of thirty Herz, which correlates directly with the ability to form abstractions - what can be thought of as castles in the mind’s sky. However, this also tends to mean that more of that person’s physical energy is going towards keeping those abstractions from crashing down, and that in turn draws energy away from external stimulae. In effect, an INXX tunes out things like time-keeping, awareness of what’s in front of them, eating and so forth. This includes that part of the brain that is responsible for awareness of self. They are more effective at whatever they are doing, but are usually the last to know that the house is on fire.
Another way of thinking about this is that most people have a single dominant personality (their conciousness). The intuitive, on the other hand, often has a suite of personalities, and can tailor those personalities dynamically. This especially comes into play with INFPs and Js, who tend to become writers and method actors disproportionately. The INFx personality is looking for patterns in people, and they often very observant in being able to then “get in other people’s heads” through mimicry and mirroring functions, though the more intuitive ones are also likely to spend a great deal of time “world-building”.
INTs are also generally system thinkers, who can keep a number of complex systems working in their head simultaneously. These people are “smart” in that they can look at problems from many different angles, and can usually see patterns because they think both abstractly and metaphorically. INTJs often tend to be involved with code of various sorts, and usually have very good memory and a bias towards reductionism - reducing a complex system to its pieces. INTPs, on the other hand, may have “terrible” memory, largely because their world view is much more synthetic and relational, but that “poor memory” actually disguises the fact that they know a prodigious amount about damn near everything, and they have to develop their own indexing mechanisms to find it. INTJs like working within systems, INTPs like building systems.
This is actually a pretty good indication of the distinction between J and P attributes. Js are very good at sorting things into categories quickly - given a set of rules for sorting things, Js can organize by need, requirements, functions, cost or any other set of criteria. They often have an excellent memory for faces, and love puzzles that require them to develop solutions. P’s on the other hand are often more fascinated by the rules themselves, and are much more inclined to play “what if”. They are attracted to language, metaphor, and the nature of patterns. The are more likely to be analysts, mathematicians, ontologists, scientists and so forth, people who ask “why” rather than “how” - and all of this is very much a function of the fractal foaminess of their brains.
So given this, it also gives an indication of why extroverts are probably less likely to appear “smart”. Again, this goes back to how often neurons fire (and actually is affected by things such as the myelin sheathing around nerves, which tends to be thicker in extroverts). Dopamine is a particular neurotransmitter that is part of the biochemistry of the brain, and is related to epinephrine, also known as adrenaline.
Extroverts need more of either dopamine or adrenaline to stimulate neural activation, which results in somewhat lower dimensional neural structures forming or breaking apart. This means that the brain is using less energy, but this also means that there is more energy available for sensory activity - observing, feeling textures, increased kinesthetics and so forth. Their sense of external awareness is much higher, and they are more likely to seek out activities that will pump endorphines like adrenaline and dopamine into their system - as well as more likely to focus on sex and social interaction. They have a greater sense of egotism as well. Taken to extremes, extroversion can manifest as narcissism and poor self-reflection.
The extrovert personality is usually much more aware of social rules and constructs, and especially with the J component, can become dogmatic, but also can excel in areas where orthodoxy - clear rules or categorizations, tend to apply. Just as IN personalities tend to cluster, so do ES ones (an IS is usually an ES who suffers from anxiety, while an EN is usually an IN who conquered the sometimes crippling insecurity that most young INs face early). Indeed, certain variants of the MBTI now include another asset called assertiveness that provides a gauge of how likely a person is to be proactive in a group. This has the additional benefit of moving the MBTI model to the same number of attributes as the Big Five used by most modern psychologists and psychotherapists, though there is still some minor disagreement about what is being measured.
The irony of all this is that the most financially successful of the categorizations cluster in the ES range. When the rules are known, confidence can be more compelling than actual competence. Extroverted sensors are more likely to go with their gut rather than slow, thoughtful analysis, but this usually also means that while the introverted analyst will often make the better decision, the extrovert will make three or four in the same time that serve primarily to reduce uncertainty, even if they are ultimately poor decisions.
Put another way, each personality has its strengths and its weaknesses, optimizing on certain facets at the expense of others. The MBTI has some limitations. I think that intuitiveness and introversion are fairly tightly coupled, as an example, which is a bad thing in a psychological model. Yet for all of that, I think the upshot of this is that if you think of intelligence as being how your personality is optimized rather than as a single static number, it can give you a much better definition of true intelligence than any one particular facet.

I think Si plans against the future in orde to keep the possibilities open for the future.
    - The Ni types have 1 specific future they (Ni) want, yet in the moment they improvise themselves to that goal, but without too much clear structure (Se)
    - Ne types want an open ended future (Ne) where as much options are possible, and in order to keep the future open of possibilites, they now act ordely in order to achieve it. A good example is health. A lot of Si types eat healthy, structured and balanced, because they do not want future with limits caused by health issues.

It's seems a better way to categorize "future" planners would be to simply looked at the J vs P party of the typings. J's will have Ni or Si in there Dom/Aux spot, where P's will have Ne or Se in the Dom/Aux spot.
Ni and Si will both think about the future, plan for it in their own way, and then work towards it. If something fails they may view as their own failure to prepare/predict the outcome correctly. Then to try and plan again they will consider their past "mistakes" to shift the way they plan going forward.
Ne and Se will both consider the future but not dwell on it, as they're be aware that anything can happen and that you can't really control it, so they more so go with the flow and adapt as things happen. They can plan for the future, but it doesn't come as naturally to them and then if things fail they're more likely to say "told you so, that's why I don't plan..."

This is why the more full of experiences our Si is (despite the position in the main stack) the more accurately predicted the future can be. Si is a great toolset even for Ne doms. It is like even if Ne possibilities are multiple, a well rounded and experienced Si wins the game, despite the scattered tendencies of Ne.

Thanks for explaining this so well. I find it frustrating that so many in the type community seem to think that the ability to think about and make plans for the future is exclusive to Ni or just N types in general. I'm not sure how this misconception came about, and how it became so prevalent -- I'm puzzled by it. Personally, I know so many SJs who are **always** planning for the future. In fact I know many SJs who can't seem to enjoy the present because they're always so future-focused -- focused on making sure that they're prepared for whatever might happen, and on trying to make sure that the bad things that could happen (as far as they can see) don't happen. "Saving for a rainy day" is probably a very SJ mentality -- and that kind of mentality definitely requires thinking and planning towards future. Much of what they do in the present is done so that they can have a better or more secure life later on. I therefore see many SJs as extremely future-focused people. However, they're future-focused in a different way than NJs are. As you say, Si's tendency is to plan **against** all the bad future possibilities rather than to plan towards that one vision that they want to actualize.

  • @Dystisis

What confuses me sometimes is the terminology of "planning". Personally I've never seen myself as a huge planner. I don't necessarily lay out my plans (especially not shorter term ones, like monthly budget or upcoming events) on paper or in a calendar. I generally tend to have that stuff present as a vague feeling in my mind, events looming that I know I'll have to focus on when the time comes. So I don't do much explicit prior deliberation.
I certainly ruminate over events that I know will be important or challenging, but again, this comes as a mix of imaginations and specific thoughts. Not so much explicit structuring of what will happen in a chronological way, which "planning" seems to imply.
But I realized that by "planning", what people in this sphere tend to mean is not necessarily prior deliberation, but actually consistently working towards achieving something. This video here was especially clear on that point. The Si doms work to prevent something (many possibilities) from happening, Ni doms work to make something (one possibility) happen.
With this being so, I am more confident in my typing as an Ni dom since yes, I have a long-range vision that I set and work towards.
Still: Prior deliberation != goal-directed work. The two can both go under the label 'planning' but they involve completely distinct processes. In general there are many ambiguities like that one in the world of typology, which detracts from it and causes confusion.

The analysis paralysis may be caused by PoLR Se. Se often makes a peson just act even if there is uncertainty. Si makes a person want to act if the cycle of how things typically go is clear and more certain. So Si is mostly useful for predictable things. Se is most useful for unpedictable things. If Se is used for predictable things, it will needlessly use too much energy/time/resources because it constantly just improvises even when with experience this is a waste of resources, while when things need improvisation, then Si is kinda too slow and careful while improvisation requires more less need for certainty (that Si wants)

It is a waste of time obsessing too much about the other negative outcomes, I would rather manipulate or let someone deal with those whilst I focus on my one specific goal.

Truly insightful, although we can't know the degree to which each of those is accurate.
A question: if one is to assume that the governing body of any given country is composed of ISTJs and ESTPs (predominantly, let's say) and given that they are morally corrupt, would that not spell catastrophe for the governed???

Not really. Stubborn about their own views describes them better. That Inferior Te and super low Ti really hurts I guess.

In terms of putting themselves first, all humans are biologically wired to be selfish by nature but in terms of narcissism and fucking people over that's mainly nurture and isn't attributed to any specific mbti type. All types can be assholes. sometimes you get Jesus and sometimes you get Hitler.

This is pretty accurate. I have an istj husband and he pretty much did that. However, my istj tend to not like planning for far in the future, his most long planning range is only a week and always avoiding the conversation when it's about long term planning.
My istj is a traditional one, he live day by day, week by week, he doesnt have long term planning nor have every kind of amunition to prepare for any kind of "rainy day". Just a traditional men, living for here n now, simply n modestly (the istj way).
