I have to give you a BIG thankyou young man. My 6 year old Grandson has been staying with us the last few weeks through this covid thing, and I have been trying to get him excited about fishing with me for something other than the Bluegills in the pond. This morning while watching your video he sat up next to me, and the excited questions began. What kind of fish is that ? - Pike Are there some around us ? -yes Do you have that kind of pole ? yes When can we go ?-When it stops raining Granpa, the fish don't care if it's raining because they are already wet! Where's my fly rod !!! Thanks again
My dad was gonna teach me to fly fish a few years ago, and got me a rod. He died before he got to do it. Now my best friend offered to teach me after my dad died, then he had a massive heart attack. He suffered some complications from surgery and lost the use of his arms. Now, here I am surfing UA-cam looking for videos that might help me figure this thing out, and I find your videos. Great stuff. It looks like a hell of a lot of fun, but I think I'll still to pan fish and trout before trying this. ;D Thanks for posting it.
Wow, I'm really sorry for your losses. Hopefully my videos can help some, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Trout and panfish are a great way to get into it! Good luck man👍
I really like your videos. Not too long, no music and because you’re always talking us through what is happening, it is like we are standning just next to you. Makes the videos very personal. And watching pikes taking the flies are always cool :) Regards from Sweden
Great videos and it’s nice to see euro-anglers mention you! One suggestion would be to add some instruction - maybe help your subscribers by talking more about finding pike in rivers, reading rivers for pike/bass, fly selection process, etc- the best channels match instruction with action.
Nice to see you out pikefishing again :) Start of the new season is always nice, new flies in the box, new ideas, new fishing spots...and a lot of expectations on catching a huge mama :D Greetings from Finland :) Keep safe...and keep 'em wet ;)
Peelindrag 12,35kg pike pb here, 9,3kg on fly 😉 Go get 'em 😁 I don't fish prespawn for pike anymore, that's searun brown season for me. And I don't bother weighing pike any more either, on the right gear any pike is fun. Have you tried pickerel on light gear? 🤔
The retrieve you use is the same as the retrieve I use for saltwater stripers in Massachusetts. It's sort of a walk the dog retrieve. This shallow water pike fishing looks like something that I'd love to do.
Typical early season results! We all are a little rusty in the spring, don't beat yourself up. When starting my musky year, each time I strip line in I repeat "strip-set, strip-set, strip-set" in my head as I retrieve the fly. I pound it in my mental bank until it becomes an instinctive reaction to the strike. It's nice that you have cooperative pike to work with. Musky strikes can be far and few between, not many opportunities to screw up and learn from.
I'll have to give that a try. Its frustrating knowing what and why I need to do it but just being in such a habit of pulling back 😂 definitely helps fishing for pike over musky!
Great fish man! It always takes a couple trips to blow the cobwebs out... you said it best, strip set. Something that we all want to be able to work on. Awesome video!
Great video! Don’t matter if your perfect what matters is your out there!! Let the haters hate just keep doing what you do! That’s entertaining us and your killing it👊🏻! God bless All🙌🏼
Nice video, something you can try doing to get better hooksets from short strikes, is doing a "strip set" instead of using the rod to set the hook. When I guided in Colorado I would miss fish that would swing at a streamer by doing a normal hookset and ripping the streamer out of the water, when you strip set your not pulling the fly out of the water, that way they can keep chasing it.
🤙🤙🤙 Nice stuff man! Quick little tip, you’ll get a little more action if after you cast, you let the fly go with the current. Then on the drift, right as it enters the current to look like it’s floating on its own, is when you’ll get hit. Like at 3:46 and 3:55. Keep them lines tight dude!
First of all...masterful hook removal on that second-last fish!!! But you know the reason why you are not pinning fish on the single hook---you are missing the strip set. It is a week before pike season opens here. I am stoked now. Thanks.
I fish these small rivers sometimes but i get lucky to catch anything so i started lake fishing for pike you can usually find ways to get to highway ponds without being on the highway that's been working pretty well.
Here's what I fish. 8-9wt , short 4 ft leader on a sinking tip line. Leader as follows: .022 2 ft , 1ft .020, 1ft .017, micro swivel, .015 tippet or run wire of your chasing big pike.
I know im way late to this, but have you ever had luck in dirtier water? I live near a really slow-moving river that carries a lot of sediment, but also is chock full of nice pike...i’d love to challenge myself to get them on a fly rod, but i dont want to potentially waste months of effort when i could be using the ol’ bucktail.
Its always a pleasure watching your videos man, whenever my new rod gets to my house im gonna send you a pic of my new outfit on Instagram, covid-19 has really screwed me out of my plans for this summer lol
Glad I found your channel and subscribed. Enjoyed video a lot. Suggestion, try not to hold fish with hands in gills, can damage them and fish may not survive and I see you catch and release which is great. Tight lines.
Hey dude, love the content. From my experience pike tend to tail bite a bit more in the early spring. Stick to double kook or I tie some with hook only in the back
Thanks for the upload, ever watched the UA-cam video (FLY TV topwater mamas pike on the fly in the mountains), have a look I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Maybe even make up some of his poppers.
Is this the black river? I've seen some fly fishermen out at mill creek but never in the black river. Either way looks like a decent spot! You earned a new sub for sure. I'm a new fisherman and local to the port huron area its crazy how many fishing spots there are around here.
Some seasoned advice to help you land more pike, don't try to set the hook the way you would with trout or spin/baitcasting tackle. You need to do a hard strip set when you feel the weight of the fish on the end of the line. Don't raise your rod tip until you've successfully strip set the hook. It'll make all the difference. TL;DR don't set the hook with the rod, stoked with your stopping hand when you feel the fish's weight on the line.
Ain't the season for pike and walleye closed? Just wondering if I can get out there and target them too, would love to get a hit on some of my bigger flies if I can!
After watching your video couldn't wait to hit the river, then it rained for a straight day and we got between 3 and 4 inches. Rivers at flood level oh well.
I so want to catch pike on fly o caught my first one off a 5ft rod lol ultralight never broke like first one on boat snapped my line definitely a fighter fish
Hey man how do you like your 9' 8wt clearwater rod? I'm thinking of getting the clearwater combo. I would get the 8wt. Will mainly use it for smallmouth bass, but will also double up as a "black salmon" rod in the spring, searun brook trout, and possibly smaller river stripers. Do you think the 8wt is just way over kill for smallies? I know a lot of people recommend 6 or 7 wt, but I feel like the 8wt would be more versatile for me....
I love all my clearwater rods, never used the reels though. An 8wt will work fine for larger smallmouth but may be a bit over kill for the smaller ones. But if your looking for one rod to do it all 8wt is definitely a good option.
@@peelindrag113 I currently have a 4wt that I love for smaller waters (Brook trout and smaller bass are a ton of fun on it). I'm a fairly new fly fisher so I don't have a lot of experience with different rod weights. I'm also thinking a stiff action 6wt could be great, and down the road get like a 9wt for striper fishing. It's not something I plan to do often.. My 4wt simply lacks the power to fight bigger smallmouth and throwing bigger flies. My casting is not great also lol.
Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
The key to fly fishing is matching your rod weight with your line weight. If you were to buy a 8-9 rod, you also need a 8-9 line, which if you want some backing, you need to store on your bigger 8 weight reel. Sometimes you can fish a 6 weight line on a 7 weight rod, but a 5 weight line on a 8-9 is a no go. Try watching some videos on line-rod matching, I will try to find some for you
I have to give you a BIG thankyou young man.

Nice. I used to take chub on a fly, great fun. Doesn't have to be a game fish before you reach for a fly rod.

Been waiting for the next video. I love watching ur pike fly fishing vids
I appreciate the support! They're one of my favorites for sure
I’ve been having decent luck for northerns in west Michigan for a few weeks now

Great outing there! you got some nice fish, thanks for sharing. Too bad our river are blown out from the last few days of rain now.
Rusty on the fly? No way looking good dude. Fun video, enjoyed it
Wow those pike are insane!!! You make it look so easy to catch those monsters!!!
Nice fish, always love to see new content, keep up the good work. Trout fishing around upstate NY has been slow on the fly rod.

Sorry I missed the first day alert, I was grading papers. You always get me going. Thanks for another great video.
Love the vid! Been catching northern's my whole life and still gets me excited hooking into one! Keep represent'in the mitten my dude! 😎
Hard to beat the aggression of a pike! Thanks for the comment

Amazing river man..nice fish
I can tell this I gonna be a good one from the title
Headed to my river soon!! Thanks for the inspiration! Fun day!
Good luck!

Love the video man! I need to get our fly fishing more!!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video!!!!
Great job, young man. I appreciate your enthusiasm and love for the sport. Subbed!
Great video of fly fishing and pike attacks!
Love the video keep up the good work would love to see more fly tying vidoes and maybe some more trout vids to keep up the good work

Love these videos!
Cool video. Would you mind of sharing the difference between 2019 Clearwater vs the previous green blank model? Thanks.
What rod set up is that. I want to get a mint pike setup like you have. Nice fish and handling. Love these river pike on the fly vids
My whole set up is in the description. I'm glad you liked the video!
sure looks fun. i need to try for pike
Hey, im wondering if pike will bite on topwater flies? If so, can you make a video on it?
Great video man! Keep it up! Hope to hit the water with you soon!!
Thanks for your video.
Have one very important question for me, what brand and model of fly line are you using!
Please respond :)
Is this the black river? I've seen some fly fishermen out at mill creek but never in the black river. Either way looks like a decent spot! You earned a new sub for sure. I'm a new fisherman and local to the port huron area its crazy how many fishing spots there are around here.
Maybe try a strip set . Works well for shallow water pike
Definitely gotta work on that!
I'm guessing you were wearing waders.
Awesome vid!
Yes, leaky waders 🙄
Wow, you really know how to get some good pike on the fly. Is it possible to learn this power?
Make sure to cover water. These fish aren't the pickiest eaters, you'll normally know in the first 10 minutes if ones in the area.
Young Padawan, you must seek out Master Wiggletail in the Pikeobah system...
Fredrik Mecklin I absolutely love this comment
Awesome video man!!👊
Thanks for watching!
You ever got back to the spot you caught those gar pike?
nice vid! Why dont pike take runs like trout seems like they get gassed after 20 seconds
That was a great video.
very cool...

Nice video, dude! I see your grip has also worn out pretty fast XD I have two clearwaters that I use a lot and both grips are totally worn hahaha
It's normally not too much of a problem, mostly just if it gets wet
Ain't the season for pike and walleye closed? Just wondering if I can get out there and target them too, would love to get a hit on some of my bigger flies if I can!
Where he's fishing (Michigan lower peninsula), season opened on the 25th.
Sweet!! Gonna get out tomorrow then!
After watching your video couldn't wait to hit the river, then it rained for a straight day and we got between 3 and 4 inches. Rivers at flood level oh well.
I was glad to get out right before I lost my chance 😂
Awesome!👍🐟
Great video
Sick bro 😎 ❤❤❤❤
Looks like a good time. I have always wanted to do top water pike or tigers. What state was this in?
Great video dude. Do you ever see any other species of fish while you’re waiting in the rivers out there
I occasionally catch bass, and the rare bowfin. Besides that I just see suckers and small panfish.
What glue do you use for your pike flies? Thanks, I like your videos your awesome
Loctite super glue ultra gel control
Hey I’m new to fly fishing and just starting out and I have a lot of pike where I live. What’s your line setup for pike?
Well lad
sik vid and fish 👏
Nice job, what part of the state are you fishing in?
What line do you recommend? Float, sink, intermediate??
Nice vid
Whats a fly leader look like when you're fishing for pike? Still use a wire leader?
Yep, always a wire leader for me. My whole set up is listed in the description
What are you using as a fly box?
Sick video. What do u look for when scouting for pike water?
Slow water and structure
What fly rod and reel do you recommend for pike fishing like this?
I so want to catch pike on fly o caught my first one off a 5ft rod lol ultralight never broke like first one on boat snapped my line definitely a fighter fish
Right on brother❤ u the mann
Hey peelindrag! What box is it you use for those streamers?
Cliff's bugger beast jr
How long will you stay in a spot before moving farther down the river?
In small pockets I'll just make a dozen casts or so in bigger better looking spots I'll stay for maybe 5-10 minutes

Nice video!! May want to keep a few pike.
Why use a barb if you’re releasing? Might make it more challenging to be barbless. It’s better on the fish’s mouth too. Nice pike though.
I do use barbless hooks in certain situations, but in this case I had enough trouble landing them as is 😅
