Great choice of outfit from Vision, I started out on that, and I’ve never looked back. I’ve only ever caught one pike lure fishing, but since changing to the fly it’s been so much more productive. You can fish the fly much more slowly than a lure, so if the pike are hammered by lures all day you have a better chance.
Dan, please wear some form of eye protection when fly fishing, all it takes is a gusty wind coming over your right side you could end up with the line round your head , or the worst scenario a hook in the head. Good video as always.
Hi Danny it's great to be back after along illness,i absolutely love fishing the fly for pike and carp it's excellent heart stopping stuff i can't tell you how much i love his it's deadly in the sprinb and summer been cathing pike and carp on the fly rod for 30 years you did really well mate,
Nothing wrong with your fly chucking practice makes perfect. I tie my own flies everything from nymphs, buzzers to zonkers Sand eels and shrimps for sea fishing and pike lures there’s nothing like matching the hatch great content as always. Try something smaller like a zonker you might even arouse the the perch 👍👍
Great to see you using the fly rod. It's my favourite way to catch them. Just a wee bit of advice, because fly rods are so much softer than conventional fishing rods, simply lifting the rod will often not provide enough force to hook the pike and they will quickly throw the hook. The best method of hook setting pike on the fly is called "strip striking". This involves giving the line a sharp tug and then lifting the rod. Good effort and keep it up. Hope this helps.
@@pikeandperch you will be a pro before you know it … then pike flies look awesome and now you will need yet another lure bag to keep it separate from ya spinning / bait casting gear…… and another rod… and reel !!!! It never ends !!!! Happy days 🤣🤣😀😀🎣🎣👍🏽👍🏽
Gud lad 👍 You have opened the door to a whole new world. Spend a few quid with an instructor, it will be worth it. Fly fishing is a very direct way to fish. On the retrieve point the rod mostly towards the fly keeping little to no angle. Watch for the line tells on the water or you will feel the bites through the line. Keep the fun going. Well done mate🤘

Great clip Dan - I've looked at it a few times after seeing the EUAngler do so well and did try it once from a boat (with very limited success). I'm confident it will all come together 👍👏
Brilliant it's great fun fly fishing for pike. Only had small ones on the fly some fight they put up. Your casting will be amazing by the end of the year I'm sure.
Spot on ! I was taught to fly fish as a kid by my grandad I'm now 36 as is the best way to fish I believe and the fight is better to land 1👍 great video nice to see u mix it up
Dude, not too shabby at all! Seriously, for your first couple times out your cast doesn't look too bad from what can be seen from that camera angle. A key thing with pike fishing is getting a fly line with a lot of mass towards the end and near the fly (like Rio Outbound Short). That will allow you cast with shorter back casts, load the rod better, and get that fly out there even in windy conditions (wind makes fly fishing much harder). You reeled in the excess line when the fish was on which was perfect, that way your reel can let the drag out if necessary, vs sliding it out with your hand. If there's no logs or snags or bicycles in the water, let the fish take drag, man! That's the fun part. Good stuff, keep going. 🙂
Mc fluff chucker flys are brilliant I use the every time flying for pike is thrilling especially when you hook up with a 8-10 pounder watching it tail walk across the water and the strength of the fish my last on was on a 8# ,amazing fight
Pike on the fly is great fun 😉. A casting tip would be too watch your line on the back cast aswell so you can time the front cast correctly, all about timing and technique, wait for the line to uncurl properly on the back cast and this will allow the rod to load up properly giving you more distance 👍 good job tho Dan well done mate 👏👏

Hi mate. I fly fish and have just started lure fishing for perch and pike due the the lockdowns. Very tempted to try the fly for pike but don’t want to invest in a fly set up yet as I’ve just bought all the lure gear ! Two rods, two reels plus everything else you need to go with it ! you're doing fine with your fluff chucking! lovely pike there, I've been fly fishing for trout, sea bass, salmon, chub etc for many years but only tried for pike in the last few seasons, had a 17 pounder very early on and thought it would be a doddle 🤣🤣 not so! I love playing fish from a fly reel though, you can feel the fight through your hands rather than through a bunch of gears (fixed spool or multiplier) wait till you get into fly tying, there's another dimension to the thrill! I think I might have seen you making your own lures on you tube?? just subbed. I'm trying to get a utube pike on fly for my channel from a river but been hampered by the weather recently. good luck, well done.
Hat off to ya there not as easy as it looks is fly fishing I've tied fly's since I was 11 and never thought of pike I'll definitely give that a try ace vids and have a great day out fishing next time u go 🎣
Forward cast rod goes to 10 o'clock, back cast rod goes to 2 o'clock. Pull line down on back cast to load rod. And as suggested get a line tray and strip strike. You'll be a master in no time. Good luck buddy.
Great video Dan. Just had my fly set up delivered so hopefully get out before the rivers close and get some fish. Your casting is better than mine, thankfully I’m only fishing small drains also 👍😂
Some tips: Stop making those short tiny little nervous stips. Make your strips much longer and a little faster. Dont try to set the hook instantly when you get a strike but wait a second. Dont lift your rod but step back and strip strike. This will make your percentage of good hooksets a lot higher. When the fish misses, it will most likely try again. When you lift your rod, the fly will be out of sight and a second strike is less likely. Tight lines!
In the states we call those lures you were using streamers. Great for pike and trout. Just keep practicing and you'll be a pro with the fly rod in no time. Tight lines.
Wouldn't it be easier on the boat? You did well anyway for your first time out with a fly rod! I'm going to go back to fly fishing in the summer for trout hopefully my health holds up, I had great plans for this year but my body had other ideas!

1- circle hooks , don't strike as you'll pull the fly out the fishes mouth , keep your rod pointed at the fly when you get a hit just clamp the flyline down against the handle fish will hook in the scissors everytime.
2 - the hooks are different as the heavier hook is designed to get down quicker in deeper water where as the manta type are lightweight and slow sinking which are the best for drains .
3 - always have the rod pointed inline with your fly on the water
4- the lighter the hook the higher the fly will ride when you strip ( heavier hooks will stay deeper down )
5- I always strip with the tune of the Viennese waltz in my head probably the best as you can speed up and slow down as you like .
6 - if you fish deeper water then think about using an intermediate line
7- what works one day may not work the next but find the baitfish and youll find the fish and keep mobile
8 - check out #euanglers page on UA-cam he's been using my flies for years you may pick up some tips
