The Volvo PCV system is one of the most neglected maintenance items on the I5 cars. Failing to maintain this system can cause major oil leaks. I blew one of my cam seals one evening and lost 2-1/2 quarts of oil in just 2 miles. If you do not know when it was serviced last, replace the system today.

I'm trying to get around to doing a PCV video. One of the first things in doing my video would be to recommend a compression test prior to doing the job. It cost $150 for the parts and takes most people 4+ hours to do their first time. A compression test on an old car is in order before putting a lot of time and money into them. I do one every 50,000 miles.

Hey Robert you're the best thank you for the information. I replaced my flame trap and nipple after which my 1995 850 passed the rubber glove test! Man I'm so happy about this I'm gonna order me some leather seat covers ;) This car is in great shape at 168,000 miles and I plan on keeping it, great city car, fits in parking spaces no one else but an electric car can. Some months back I followed your instructions and did the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and the pulleys, also did the drivers side seat belt, couldn't have done it without you man thanks again the videos are invaluable!!!

    I will check that out.
As for the PCV system, the box is the strongest link in the system. The only reason I pull them is because I need to make sure I clean behind the box, make sure the ports are clear. The main problem with the system is that the lines are clogged, damaged, leaking, etc., stopping the system from venting properly and creating the vacuum it is suppose to.

Thanks a million for posting this. I had no reason to suspect a problem, but I thought I'd check on the PCV system in my wife's V70, as it's getting close to needing a timing belt again. I bought the car 3 years ago. At the time, one of the selling points is that the PCV system had been professionally serviced sometime before purchase.
Anyhow, I was able to confirm that the PCV system is indeed healthy. One follow-up question - what's the typical service/replacement interval on these parts?

    • @RobertDIY

Leave them alone until they get clogged or a part breaks from someone working near them.

    • @RobertDIY

I'm not sure. There is a chance that you are experiencing piston blow by. You can do a compression test to find out.
How to do a compression test on a car motor. Volvo 850, S70, V70 through 1998 - Auto Repair Series
Please let me know the results. That way I'll know for future people. So, my thoughts right now is that your PCV system is in good health, but you may have a worn motor or piston. If your car is a turbo, the numbers should be between 156 - 186 psi. If your car is NA then numbers should be between 185 - 215.

Hi Dovydas, for some reason, I could NOT replay to your message. Likely a setting in your account. At any rate, as the video explains, I do NOT use NOR like the smoking dipstick test. The oil system gets hot and will smoke. Smoke is NORMAL, that is why the system is designed to trap and recycle the fumes. So, it sounds to me like things with your SERVICED system is working very good. Move on to another issue, we all know there is one. ;)

Thanks for a quick reply, and I got one more problem. When the engine is idling, I can feel some vibration while sitting in the car, the rpm needle is jumping up and down a little, what could be the cause of that? If I disconnect the maf sensor, rpm jumps to 1000 and it seems that the vibration is gone. I cleaned the maf sensor and even put another one from other volvo 850, it didn't help, I think it's not the cause. Maybe I should change the spark plugs?

Valuable, valuable information!! I just looked at a 2004 XC90 last week. 2.5T engine. I pulled off the oil filler cap and saw some white smoke coming out of the oil filler neck. Not a lot of white smoke, but there was some and it flowing out steadily while the engine was running. The car drove fine, but the white smoke was enough to make me pass on vehicle. This video sheds some light on what may have been going on with that vehicle and some issues to look out for before purchasing a vehicle. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I did a thorough clean, found very little residue. The old PCV was in bad condition so it needed to be done. It has reduced the smoke but there is still a smell of fumes when the car is warmed up & only then. I'm not burning or losing any fluids, none. The plugs are new & clean. I will compression test & clean the PTC valve. I did not check or clean this when I replaced the PCV piping.
If you have any other suggestions, it will be appreciated.

96 850 R , I finished the pcv job, and everything went well but still have the mystery part. I got the car a couple weeks ago, so not sure if it's something that was just hanging around from another job. looks like it's had a new radiator and starter. part doesn't seem like it's part of the manifold or pcv. it's basically a 1"x1" cylinder ( like a donut) with a metal body, copper wires inside that go to to leads on the end, and a plastic sheath that looks like if you insert it in a hole it will keep it in... I can send a pic, . anyway I finished the pcv job at 1am and had to drive it home and everything seems to work fine. hopefully the pcv job slows down the rear main seal leak or I'm going to be asking a lot more questions... timing belt is next...thanks for all the great videos!

Hi Robert, I just came across your Site & Vids... what a great resource. I am an Aussie, I have a 97 Volvo 850 wagon, with 380+ K Km on the clock, and serviced by a (ex-) Volvo mechanic every 10k with a 5k oil change. It has never let me down, but is starting to use some oil. No signs of anything wrong, no smoke, and my mechanic says to just keep it topped up. It runs like a dream, and I will have the ABS module fixed in a couple of weeks by an auto electrician. The Fault light comes on too soon, maybe an O2 sensor. Those are my only 2 issues, but got them sorted, I hope. My niece has a 2006 V50, goes great, but the ignition key get stuck occasionally - a real pain. Anyway this is just to say keep up the good work - I have subscribed, and will enjoy looking at your Vids. Cheers

The problem with the oil box plugging is almost eliminated by using synthetic oil like Mobil 1. I cleaned the throttle body and the oil box at 100,000 miles and the box didn't have much in it. We cleaned it out using hot water to make a strong solution with dish washing liquid. I let it soak for about an hour and then sprayed Simple Green inside. Rinsed well and the box was very clean. Cleaned the throttle body and put in a new set of Volvo plugs. My XC 70 runs like new.

Robert DIY 116k and it still runs like a top. The one piece of advise I can give is to change the fluid in the Haldex unit (XC 70). Volvo says that it last forever, but that's bull. The fluid was loaded with clutch material when we opened up the case. Changed the filter and the four wheel drive worked beautifully again. The ABS is showing a strange intermittent failure and throwing a ABS check light. Do you have any suggestions? I saw a You Tube video and it seems that the plastic case warps with age and some pins inside start to lose contact. Ever seen that? Thanks, love the channel.

Yes, a compression test. This is not a fact but just an example. Lets say that a motor in good condition will blow 20 units of air per minute. Lets also assume that the PCV system is designed to handle 25 units of air per minute. Well, a motor with worn pistons may produce 35 units of air per minute, which exceeds the system design, likely on purpose to let you know that something is going wrong with the motor before it leaves you stranded in the wilderness somewhere. Do a compression test.

I’ve got fuse 14 or 15 which is emissions system and air conditioner that keeps blowing a 10 amp fuse. Pulled the blower motor and hooked up to 13 v and it blows. Resistor varies voltage to the connector with a multi meter, but when plugged in it will not blow. Car is in limp mode because emissions fuse is popped. Love some recommendations.

My 03 V70 has milky oil and used to only be very little like one small drip on the dipstick. The previous owner said the pcv system was clogged. In the last week, I have seen a rather scary oil leak under my car lately, about 6 or 7 inches in diameter. Then today, I drove for 4 hours at highway speeds and got a dash alert that said no oil pressure. I pulled over and added a quart. I have been adding oil since I got it. It burns (or leaks now) about a quart a month but never gets low enough to alert me. I drove a bit more. It came on again. I checked it, and saw oil everywhere on the passenger side. It took 6 quarts for me to get it home so that I wouldn't run it dry... There was a hole in the hood insulation where the dipstick is. Looks like that's where it came from mostly. But at a quick glance it appears to be coming from the oil separator box. I didn't spend much time looking. I had to go to work. Any help is greatly appreciated! Do you think the pcv system is to blame for milky oil and leaking? Do you think it may be bigger than that?

Robert, I have a problem with my V70 Phase 1 2.0 litre non turbo 10 valve 180,000 miles on the clock (850 shape) I have done a FULL service myself when I bought it, Plugs, ALL filters, good quality "semi" oil and no "blown up" glove, Mine sucks glove in just like yours!!! it "hunts" when I connect the IAC valve (but only shows a code when its DISCONNECYED) It will sit and rev from 600 to 1500 RPM when connected BUT when disconnected will start and run normally (Fuel consumption is an average of 27.5 MPG combined when disconnected which is fairly normal so i gather and it passes it's UK "MOT" LAMDA is 1.00 which is perfect!!!) checked PCV and all is ok, checked all vacuum pipes, all intact, IAC is operational as no codes thrown up when connected (BUT HUNTS like hell!!!) any idea's please? Thanks Clive in the UK

Robert, love your videos. Wish I had started watching them sooner. The PCV breather failed on my '06 S40. It started making this awful whirring/moaning noise. I went ahead and immediately replaced the unit (different process on this model, still bad design!). But I was not quick enough - I noticed some oil leaking around the intake cam sprocket with the vvt actuator on it. So I will need to replace that and the belt and seals. Can I just lock the cams with the cam lock tool or do I need to lock the crankshaft too?
I would advise anyone purchasing a used Volvo with an I5 motor to just go ahead and replace the darn PCV breather because it will eventually bite you in the rear end!

My problem turned out to be the two oxygen sensors were faulty. This in turn caused too much fuel to be used, thus upping the amount of exhaust & overwhelming the breather system.

+Nicolas Philippe Yes, sometimes the rings are a little worn and they need to warm up to seal and stop piston blow by. If you are getting smoke from the tail pipe it can be several things. I'd start by checking the turbo, pcv system, and go from there. Make sure you have the correct oil.

  • @RobertDIY
    @RobertDIY  11 років тому

I think it will NOT work. The hoses are usually clogged with with a hard carbon build up. The engine port may also be clogged. Also, the diesel fuel will NEVER reach the lines, oil does NOT flow through these lines. They are damaged from years and years and thousands upon thousands of miles of OIL VAPOR. I promise you. many upon many people have tried to get around PROPERLY servicing this system and have failed. What damage might diesel fuel otherwise do?

I don't think I was specific enough. It is a vacuum elbow that attaches to a hose that runs under the intake manifold I believe and then somewhere to the back of the engine. Everything besides the vacuum lines have been done in the last 10,000 miles and I have service records dating back to 1998 (when it was new) showing repairs and replacements. Those vacuum lines have been the biggest issue for me.

Hey Robert , Hope is well !
When I rebuilt the head on our 99 I replaced the PCV system at 180,000. I was just getting ready to do the belt and water pump at 240000 since I noticed a leak coming the cam seal behind the vvt on the exhaust cam. I may not have pressed the seal in properly the first time but I will check the PVC system to make sure that isn't why I am having cam seal issues. My question is while I was checking the timing marks and getting the vvt spring tension set (after replacing the cam seals/pump and belt) I had to reset the vvt by a tooth. When I removed the vvt cap ( after new seals and running 20 miles)I had a few maybe 2 to 5 ounces of engine oil come out the vvt but had not seen any oil leaks while testing it running for 20 miles. ( P0014 code timing off) Which is why I pulled the vvt back off and reset it with cam locking tool and crank pulley set to block TDC. I had everything set up the first time then hand cranked the engine two revolutions plus went past TDC then hand cranked engine back to TDC all marks had lined up but I think I had a little slack in the belt and it was off one tooth. It looks to me the way the seals work on the vvt and engine block that oil would have to enter the inner vvt and is held in or prevented leaking by the vvt cap? Just wondering if I may need to redo that seal again........ I guess if I run it for a while and do not get any leaks that is the way the vvt interacts with the cam shaft and engine block and camshaft seal..... appreciate your time as always
    Donny

    • @RobertDIY
      @RobertDIY  8 років тому

+Donny McClure please NEVER use the term TDC with vehicles that use marks to align timing, especially these white block Volvo's.
The hub's hold oil so you can find oil in them. They also have 2 seals (I believe).
If you are off a tooth according to the marks, you need to loosen the belt and move that cam so that the marks are correct.
If the belt is loose after you crank it over by hand reset the tensioner.

    • @beoutside
      @beoutside 8 років тому

This technique works great for setting cams with VVT's and thanks for the info!
Basically, consider it to be a three stage process:
      Stage 1
Forget the VADIS proceedure for now and whatever you have tried so far
      Stage 2
      Have
the crank locked in position on its mark. Drop a 6" 3/8 extenstion into
the hole near the starter, turn motor counter clockwise by hand until
      it hits the stop.
Cams should locked in position, in line with seam in head.
Ensure all all notches are lined up on the cam pulleys with the timing belt cover.
      Timing belt sould be on.
Inner bolt on cam pulley that fixes the unit onto the camshaft should be torqued down (Circa 88Ft Lbs, please verify).
The three bolts for the cam gear to VVT unit should be loose
      VVT
unit should be turned fully counter clockwise (bolts will be on the
left of the holes in the toothed pulley when this is done).
      If
you cant achieve stage 2, ie the VVT unit will not move far enough
counterclockwise for the three bolts to be at their leftmost limit, then
the center bolt that attaches the unit to the cam needs to be loosened
as their relative positions are incorrect.
      Stage 3
Keep cams locked, pulleys at marks amd crank locked\at mark.
Fit the outer "cap" onto the VVT unit (T60 torx), no need to torque it yet.
Rotate the VVT unit clockwise using the cap with a T60 torx until it hits its limit.
Lock the three outer pulley bolts.
Torque the VVT cap (25 lb/ft I think, please verify).
      You
should now be in a position where all marks line up and the three
pulley bolts on the VVT unit are on rightmost part of the holes in the
      toothed gear.

I'd check compression just to make sure the motor is not worn but chances are, the PCV system is plugged.
